At least weekly (and sometimes daily) I perform a routine cleanup on my PC to rid of the file debris that the operating system, computer programs and my internet browser(s) leave behind. Over a period of time the accumulation of these files are phenomenal and can lead to the slow down (defragmentation) of a PC and can lead to privacy and vulnerability concerns. The program that I use to automate the cleanup process is one of the most popular system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool out there. It is called “CCleaner” (aka: CrapCleaner). CCLeaner, which is totally “FREE”, has been downloaded over 210 million times… WOW!
Most people like this program for its ability to cleanup your browser tracks (i.e. Temporary files, history, cookies, Autocomplete form history, index.dat.). Did you know that the “index.dat” file that is used by Internet Explorer is a repository of redundant information, such as web URLs (of every web site visited), search queries and recently opened files. If you think you are hiding your tracks by using the cleaning function in your browser, you better think twice… That “index.dat” file is a telltale sign of your browsing history and there is more than one of those on your system. Using CCleaner will also automate the process of emptying your Recycle Bin, and removing your Recent Documents, Temporary files and Log files. The program also sports a built in registry cleaner, which prompts you for a backup, prior to making any changes. I am a strong supporter of this program and use it as part of my routine maintenance strategy.
Description (as indicated on the web site):
CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it’s fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware! 🙂
NOTE: The first time you run the program, do not be alarmed that it is taking awhile (not uncommon). Following that initial cleaning, the cleaning process is much quicker. Also, there is a “portable” version available that you can download run from your flash drive.
