Foxmarks is changing name to Xmarks…

XmarksFoxmarks, a Firefox bookmark manager add-on is evolving into Xmarks. If you do not know what I am referring to, please hang in there and I will try to explain.

First, what is Firefox?… I find that many, many people still do not know about Firefox or they think that they have to stay with the Internet Explorer browser. Firefox (by Mozilla) is a web browser (like Internet Explorer) but with many, many more features and add-ons. You will find many techs, geeks and computer guru’s using this browser due to the added security that Firefox offers. Firefox gains in popularity everyday and is a main competitor to Internet Explorer. If you are interested, you can visit the Mozilla Firefox web site [ here ] to learn more. I highly recommend this browser over Internet Explorer.

Getting back to Xmarks Xmarks is an add-on utility that you install that allows you to save and backup (synchronize) your internet favorites (or bookmarks) to an online Xmarks’ account that you subscribe to. Install Xmarks on each computer you use, and it seamlessly integrates with your web browser and keeps your bookmarks safely backed up and in sync.

The plus to all of this… After you have setup your account, you can also access your online account from any computer to get to your favorites. According to the website the Xmarks browser add-on is coming soon to Internet Explorer and Safari.

Key info from the Xmarks web site:

Xmarks is a superset of Foxmarks – it adds web discovery features to our world-class bookmark sync. Learn more here.

If you choose to upgrade to Xmarks, it will work seamlessly with your existing Foxmarks account and will sync with your other computers running Foxmarks. Install Xmarks here.

Foxmarks.com and our existing Foxmarks add-ons won’t change overnight. We expect to have upgrades to all three Foxmarks versions available by the end of March and we’ll provide you with more detailed info once we return from the DEMO conference.

  1. It always amazes me how many people have/use Firefox “because a friends said it was better” who have no idea that Firefox’s real strength is provided by the use of plug-ins (Mozilla calls them “Add-ons”).

And nobody offers a wider array of plug-ins than Firefox!

Foxmarks uh.. excuse me, Xmarks is one a few I consider “must have’s”, as I have more than one computer I use to access the Web, and I am a “mobile” computer.

So, Firefox users, click on “Tools”, then “Add ons”, then “Get Add ons” and explore the hundreds of choices! I think you’ll be glad you did.
(And while you’re there, get NoScript, AdBlock Plus, and FlashBlock, and harden your computer against Internet attacks.. as well as getting rid of those ads.)
