Free Microsoft Office Training Right Under Our Noses…

Many people entering the IT field have the illusion that the bulk of their work will be specifically managing the network, working on PC’s, or working a help desk. This may be true on a corporate level, but as a former IT specialist at a medium size State Government agency, I soon learned that I was all those functions and MORE wrapped up in one. You soon learn to become more of a business manager, than an IT Manager. The most difficult element to manage, as an IT Manager, is what I call the “people element”. You will have the person that claims to know everything or the person that claims to know nothing. One of the most important things I learned, and it truly worked, was ways to make my network smarter by educating the users. Educating them in bursts, (similar to a blog) by pumping out information on a consistent basis or by sending small groups to the local college for one day classes. These short bursts of training energized information sharing between users and took on a competitive characteristic of its’ own.  In the end, my job became easier.

Most businesses and agencies today use the Microsoft Office products (e.g. Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Access, etc.). Learning to use Microsoft Office can be key in maintaining your business continuity plan AND will make your business more efficient (and smarter). An excellent, FREE, training resource for the Microsoft Office products is right under our noses.  Microsoft currently provides online:

“Free Self Paced Training Courses For Office”

The training is step-by-step and is in short bursts ranging from 30 minutes to 60 minutes, depending on the topic. Training topics are available for the following Microsoft Office products.  You can click any of the links below to preview a specific training topic.  The objective of this article is to point out that there are resources out there, that are FREE, to make us all smarter and more efficient at what we do.

  1. I have “taken” a few of these and can recommend them. Advanced, Beginner, Inbetweener.

Microsoft has some great free resources out there, and seem to be adding more each week. And you’re absolutely right, handing someone a URL to a tutorial beats repeating yourself each time the question comes up!

  2. TechPaul,

I love digging down into the Microsoft domain to find things, such as this… Their site is gigantic in terms of content, pages, etc…

    Thanks for visiting…
