NEW 3D Earth View Option Available in Google Maps

If you are familiar with Google Earth then you are familiar with the data-rich 3D imagery and terrain that Google Earth is capable of.

Preview before adding

Recently the Official Google Blog announced that there is now a view option available on Google Maps called Earth that uses the same 3D power of Google Earth.

Once you visit Google Maps and select the Earth option you will be prompted to download a browser plugin. The browser plugin, once downloaded and installed, enables you to navigate and explore geographic data in a three-dimensional view; just like the standalone software version of Google Earth. The browser version is somewhat limited and does not have the additional functionality (other options) that the standalone version has; however, the ability to explore the earth in 3D detail in your web browser is nothing but sensational and is an excellent addon to Google Maps.

A TIP to using the Google Earth View option: When navigating the location you select, hold down the “Shift key and Left Mouse Button” to change the vertical field of view to a horizontal field of view (similar to what you would see in a flight simulator).

System Requirements

The Google Earth Plugin is currently available for the following operating systems and web browsers:

Microsoft Windows (2000, XP, Vista, and 7)

  • Google Chrome 1.0+
  • Internet Explorer 7+ (32-bit)
  • Firefox 2.0+
  • Flock 1.0+

Apple Mac OS X 10.4 and higher (Intel and PowerPC)

  • Safari 3.1+
  • Firefox 3.0+
