Scan To The Cloud With CloudScan

I started wondering if there was software available (for FREE) that would allow you to use your scanner to scan documents to the cloud?  What I specifically was looking for was scanning software that would load in my browser and allow me to scan documents to my Google Docs account.

Sure enough, if you can think of it, then it has been done. What I came across on this hunt was CloudScan that met my criteria, and more!

CloudScan is a completely free scan application. It provides a new, simple way to scan your documents, pictures or photos and save them to mulitpage PDF files. Cloud can be successfully used on one computer. The simple, friendly interface provides results in seconds. If you have more than one PC (home or office network), you are getting a revolutionary approach to scanning: just install the SharedScanner component to one PC, and you can share scanner and use it from almost any other computer or device without installation. Just a usual web browser is required.

  1. Don’t quite get this. How do I scan from a computer a thousand miles away? Don’t I need to be physically present at the actual scanner to place the document onto the scanner and to change the pages (if I do not have an auto-sheet feeder)? And if I have to be physically present where the scanner is, why can’t I just use the PC that’s connected to the scanner?

    1. jbe,

      CloudScan consists of two components:
SharedScanner: An application that has to be installed on the computer connected to a scanner.
CloudScan: A web application that does not require an installation. Just navigate to and start scanning.

When SharedScanner is installed, it allows access to your scanner across your network. It does not have its own GUI, but it provides services to the CloudScan web application. Once the installation is finished, you can forget about this part. Shared Scanner will work silently in the background.
