Copy Cassette Tapes and Vinyl LPs (Records) To CD With Audacity

I don’t know how many times over the years I have been approached and asked if I knew of a low cost software solution to copy (or convert) cassette tapes and Vinyl LP’s (records) to CD (or the computer). To be honest, and being as software savvy as I think I am, I often was not able to provide a good solution and left scratching my head.

Well today, I can give you a software solution that is as low cost as it gets (FREE), is well known, and most recently was updated (after several years without any updates). That solution is called Audacity

Audacity is a free, easy-to-use and multilingual audio editor and recorder for Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux and other operating systems. You can use Audacity to:

  • Record live audio.
  • Convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs.
  • Edit Ogg Vorbis, MP3, WAV or AIFF sound files.
  • Cut, copy, splice or mix sounds together.
  • Change the speed or pitch of a recording.
  • And more! See the complete list of features.

Now that I have provided you with the software solution (Audacity); next comes the instruction on “How To” copy (or convert) tapes or LP’s into a digital format. This is where the Audacity website excels. Not only do the developers provide an excellent software solution, they also provide an excellent online manual [ CLICK HERE ] that specifically addresses what we are looking for in this article:

  1. Audacity is one of the great ones! I like to use it to make ringtones and custom windows sounds (my recent favorite is the short guitar riff from David Gilmour on Shine On You Crazy Diamond). It’s somewhat haunting and I use it for my new mail sound.
