A Flash Drive That Is As Small As Your Thumbnail

May 18, 2015

Recently purchased a couple of the SanDisk Cruzer Fit 8GB USB 2.0 Low-Profile Flash Drives to use with my car and truck audio systems (which means — “no more CD’s”)… Due to the small size of these drives they are best suited for purposes such as this where you plug them in and leave them in place.  I am thinking about purchasing some more of these flash drives, in the larger capacities (>8GB) to serve as my tech toolbox and carry in my wallet. When I got these drives I was really fascinated with how small they were and was saying to myself “How is this possible?”…

TECH DEAL – Metro Vacuum ED500 DataVac 500-Watt 0.75-HP Electric Duster 120 volt

November 11, 2014

To maintain optimum cooling performance and stability of your computers and electronics it is necessary that on a regularly scheduled basis that you blow out the dust that accumulates. I have seen the interior components of computers so laden with dust that a blanket had actually developed causing the computer to overheat and stop functioning. Not forgetting to mention that dust build up on electronics can cause an overheated condition that potentially can lead to a fire.

A solution to this issue is to used cans of compressed air. This is a good solution; however, it can also be a costly solution with the costs of canned air being as high as $7 or 8$. A solution to eliminating the ongoing expense of canned air is the Metro Vaccuum Electric Duster. Bite the bullet on the cost of this duster and never buy cans of compressed air again.

Don’t let the name of this product fool you into thinking this is a vaccuum cleaner. It is the opposite, it is a duster with a 3/4 HP blower and it is awesome (and powerful) that will blow the dust out of just about anything. When blowing dust from your computer, make sure you do it in an open air environment (like outdoors) and make sure you wear eye protection.

I found a good deal on this at Amazon that you can use as a price comparison and where you can get a good read on the customer reviews (of over 1500 reviews). I cannot emphasize the importance of keeping your electronics dust free.

The Easiest Way To Tell If The Windows 8.1 Update Is Installed On Your Computer

May 22, 2014

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] The Easiest Way To Tell If The Windows 8.1 Update Is Installed On Your Computer – If you are confused about Windows 8.1 and the Windows 8.1 Update, you are not alone. In a nutshell; Windows 8.1 was an update to Windows 8.  Windows 8.1 Update, which is a completely different thing from Windows 8.1, is an update to Windows 8.1 (and Windows 8). Still confused?

The bottom line is that you want to make sure your computer is completely up to date. To determine if you have the Windows 8.1 Update installed go to the Start screen. If you see a Search button near your account name at the top of the Start screen, you already have the update.

FREE Self Managing Android Battery Saving App

May 11, 2014

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] FREE Self Managing Android Battery Saving App – I am big on the Android Smartphones; currently owning a Nexus 5. It has become (literally) my computer in my pocket; however, I learned early on that it is important to monitor its’ battery life on a daily basis in order to get the most out of my computer in my pocket. To assist me with this task is the FREE Android App called Battery Doctor (Battery Saver).

Battery Doctor

I have been using this app for quite awhile and can attest that it will significantly improve your battery life. It is smart in that it self manages and optimizes your phone in a way that it will shutdown battery eating background apps and hardware (such as bluetooth, wifi, etc…) when these components are not in use (or are not needed). There is also power management features built into the app  to let you know how much power your apps are consuming, how much battery is left, when is a good time to charge and when not too charge.

Overall, one of my favorite utilities on my phone that I highly recommend.

Understanding The Difference Between Refreshing, Resetting Or Restoring Your Windows 8.1 PC

April 27, 2014

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] Understanding The Difference Between Refreshing, Resetting Or Restoring Your Windows 8.1 PC– If you are a Windows 8.1 PC user and you are finding that your computer may not be running up to par; you have several options to either refresh, reset or restore your PC. It is very important to understand the difference between the three.  No matter what option you choose, ALWAYS back up your personal files.

  1. Refreshing your PC reinstalls Windows and keeps your personal files and settings. It also keeps the apps that came with your PC and the apps you installed from the Windows Store.
  2. Resetting your PC reinstalls Windows but deletes your files, settings, and apps—except for the apps that came with your PC.
  3. Restoring your PC is a way to undo recent system changes you’ve made.

The RESTORE option is the least aggressive, with the RESET Option being the most aggressive. Just remember, if you do a RESET you will lose your personal files and data.

GEEK SQUEAKS – Featuring A Windows 8.1 Update Install Marathon On A HP Computer (following a hard drive failure).

April 20, 2014

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] A Windows 8.1 Update Install Marathon On An HP Computer (following a hard drive failure) – This squeak is from a personal experience that I will keep short; therefore, a chopped up description.

Windows 8.1 Update

Have you ever ran a marathon and you thought there was no end? To me the experience below was unbelievable and was like running a marathon.

My Father’s All-In-One HP computer, running Windows 8.1, still under warranty, had a hard drive failure. Called HP, patched to India, on the phone for an over an hour to run the diagnostics and listen to them trying to scare me into buying the extended warranty. Hard drive failure confirmed, patched to another person in India who kept telling me how wonderful I was. Hard drive shipped (within 3 days), and installed (in less than 15 minutes); then, the real fun began.

The drive shipped with HP’s Windows 8 recovery software.  My objective was to get the machine up and running, then upgrade to Windows 8.1…

Long story short, started at 6 pm and finished after 1 am.  Over 7 hours to run the recovery, download all of the Windows updates, and download/install Windows 8.1.  The time involved did not include the other tweaking required to get my Father’s PC back to the point he originally was at (i.e. printer install, third party software installs, cosmetic changes, etc…).

I am definitely, at my next visit, going to image the disk…  Has anyone else experienced this?
