How To Add Bluetooth Wireless Technology To An Old Sound System

There is an abundance of “excellent” sounding speaker and stereo systems out there that people end of disposing of because those systems lack the bluetooth wireless technology where you can stream music from your smartphone (or tablet). My advice to you is this: Do not dispose of your speakers or sound system; especially if it is a system of excellent sound quality and especially if it is a system that you have an emotional attachment to. There is a very simple (and inexpensive) solution to this problem. It is called a “bluetooth audio adapter”…

For example, I have an older Bose tabletop audio system that is of older technology, that still sounds as good as the day I purchased it; however, it lacks the ability to stream music from my smartphone via bluetooth. To remedy this problem, I purchased a bluetooth audio adapter, by Logitech (see below), that connected to the “audio in” jack on the Bose unit. The adapter came with its own power cord and an audio cord that can be used either via the RCA or 3.5mm jacks. After connecting the bluetooth adapter to my Bose unit and powering it up, it was just the matter of pairing the adapter with my phone. I was literally up and running in minutes and now I have an endless source of music that can be steamed and played through my Bose unit.

If you want to explore other adapters, there is a link provided below that will redirect you to Amazon to look at the choices. I went with Logitech due to Logitech being a commonly known brand name.

As I indicated, the adapter I ended up going with was the “Logitech Bluetooth Audio Adapter for Bluetooth Streaming” (at Amazon of course). Click on the links below to see the reviews (which is over 3,200 reviews).

Logitech Bluetooth Audio Adapter for Bluetooth Streaming

  • Bluetooth Audio Adapter: Makes your speakers Bluetooth for streaming music from your smartphone or tablet
  • Multipoint Bluetooth connectivity: Simultaneously pair your smartphone and tablet and stream music from either one
  • Easy pairing and automatic re-pairing: Pair your device to the adapter once with a single button press and you’re done
  • Long-range wireless: Stream music from up to 15 meters (50 feet) away from your speakers
  • Works with most speakers: Plugs into any powered PC speakers, home stereo systems and A/V receivers using RCA or 3.5 mm jacks. This product is a receiver ONLY, not a transmitter.

A Flash Drive That Is As Small As Your Thumbnail

Recently purchased a couple of the SanDisk Cruzer Fit 8GB USB 2.0 Low-Profile Flash Drives to use with my car and truck audio systems (which means — “no more CD’s”)… Due to the small size of these drives they are best suited for purposes such as this where you plug them in and leave them in place.  I am thinking about purchasing some more of these flash drives, in the larger capacities (>8GB) to serve as my tech toolbox and carry in my wallet. When I got these drives I was really fascinated with how small they were and was saying to myself “How is this possible?”…

TECH DEAL – Metro Vacuum ED500 DataVac 500-Watt 0.75-HP Electric Duster 120 volt

To maintain optimum cooling performance and stability of your computers and electronics it is necessary that on a regularly scheduled basis that you blow out the dust that accumulates. I have seen the interior components of computers so laden with dust that a blanket had actually developed causing the computer to overheat and stop functioning. Not forgetting to mention that dust build up on electronics can cause an overheated condition that potentially can lead to a fire.

A solution to this issue is to used cans of compressed air. This is a good solution; however, it can also be a costly solution with the costs of canned air being as high as $7 or 8$. A solution to eliminating the ongoing expense of canned air is the Metro Vaccuum Electric Duster. Bite the bullet on the cost of this duster and never buy cans of compressed air again.

Don’t let the name of this product fool you into thinking this is a vaccuum cleaner. It is the opposite, it is a duster with a 3/4 HP blower and it is awesome (and powerful) that will blow the dust out of just about anything. When blowing dust from your computer, make sure you do it in an open air environment (like outdoors) and make sure you wear eye protection.

I found a good deal on this at Amazon that you can use as a price comparison and where you can get a good read on the customer reviews (of over 1500 reviews). I cannot emphasize the importance of keeping your electronics dust free.

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] The Easiest Way To Tell If The Windows 8.1 Update Is Installed On Your Computer – If you are confused about Windows 8.1 and the Windows 8.1 Update, you are not alone. In a nutshell; Windows 8.1 was an update to Windows 8.  Windows 8.1 Update, which is a completely different thing from Windows 8.1, is an update to Windows 8.1 (and Windows 8). Still confused?

The bottom line is that you want to make sure your computer is completely up to date. To determine if you have the Windows 8.1 Update installed go to the Start screen. If you see a Search button near your account name at the top of the Start screen, you already have the update.

FREE Self Managing Android Battery Saving App

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] FREE Self Managing Android Battery Saving App – I am big on the Android Smartphones; currently owning a Nexus 5. It has become (literally) my computer in my pocket; however, I learned early on that it is important to monitor its’ battery life on a daily basis in order to get the most out of my computer in my pocket. To assist me with this task is the FREE Android App called Battery Doctor (Battery Saver).

Battery Doctor

I have been using this app for quite awhile and can attest that it will significantly improve your battery life. It is smart in that it self manages and optimizes your phone in a way that it will shutdown battery eating background apps and hardware (such as bluetooth, wifi, etc…) when these components are not in use (or are not needed). There is also power management features built into the app  to let you know how much power your apps are consuming, how much battery is left, when is a good time to charge and when not too charge.

Overall, one of my favorite utilities on my phone that I highly recommend.

Understanding The Difference Between Refreshing, Resetting Or Restoring Your Windows 8.1 PC

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] Understanding The Difference Between Refreshing, Resetting Or Restoring Your Windows 8.1 PC– If you are a Windows 8.1 PC user and you are finding that your computer may not be running up to par; you have several options to either refresh, reset or restore your PC. It is very important to understand the difference between the three.  No matter what option you choose, ALWAYS back up your personal files.

  1. Refreshing your PC reinstalls Windows and keeps your personal files and settings. It also keeps the apps that came with your PC and the apps you installed from the Windows Store.
  2. Resetting your PC reinstalls Windows but deletes your files, settings, and apps—except for the apps that came with your PC.
  3. Restoring your PC is a way to undo recent system changes you’ve made.

The RESTORE option is the least aggressive, with the RESET Option being the most aggressive. Just remember, if you do a RESET you will lose your personal files and data.

GEEK SQUEAKS – Featuring A Windows 8.1 Update Install Marathon On A HP Computer (following a hard drive failure).

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] A Windows 8.1 Update Install Marathon On An HP Computer (following a hard drive failure) – This squeak is from a personal experience that I will keep short; therefore, a chopped up description.

Windows 8.1 Update

Have you ever ran a marathon and you thought there was no end? To me the experience below was unbelievable and was like running a marathon.

My Father’s All-In-One HP computer, running Windows 8.1, still under warranty, had a hard drive failure. Called HP, patched to India, on the phone for an over an hour to run the diagnostics and listen to them trying to scare me into buying the extended warranty. Hard drive failure confirmed, patched to another person in India who kept telling me how wonderful I was. Hard drive shipped (within 3 days), and installed (in less than 15 minutes); then, the real fun began.

The drive shipped with HP’s Windows 8 recovery software.  My objective was to get the machine up and running, then upgrade to Windows 8.1…

Long story short, started at 6 pm and finished after 1 am.  Over 7 hours to run the recovery, download all of the Windows updates, and download/install Windows 8.1.  The time involved did not include the other tweaking required to get my Father’s PC back to the point he originally was at (i.e. printer install, third party software installs, cosmetic changes, etc…).

I am definitely, at my next visit, going to image the disk…  Has anyone else experienced this?

GEEK SQUEAKS – Using Software To Change Your Computer DNS Fast (and Safe)

When you type in a web address from your browser, your computer connects to a DNS server (through your internet service provider) that takes that address (which is in a human readable form) and translates it to a IP address (which is a set of numbers). In the end, computers connect to each other on the network by their technical internet addresses called IPs: IP (v4) or IP (v6).

The DNS is typically transparent to most of us, but it is important to know that you can alter the DNS settings on your computer to serve specific purposes (such as to protect your kids from porn sites). Manually performing these changes is something most people will not do, fearing they may mess up their computers.

An automated solution or way to pick and choose a DNS is through software that is engineered to help you make the changes and to understand those changes.

One solution I use is Chris PC DNS Switch…

Chris PC DNS Switch

Chris PC DNS Switch has built-in preset groups of servers in its DNS database, ChrisPC DNS Switch offers you the freedom to conveniently manage your DNS settings for all the network adapters belonging to your PC/laptop running Windows. End result is that you can pick and choose a DNS that is suitable for your situation (such as protecting the kids from porn).

What makes Pushbullet so useful?

Simple! It’s the easiest way to get things from your computer onto your phone or from your phone onto your computer. It’s also great for sending things from one Android device to another, or even to friends!

– By sending a file with Pushbullet, it’s automatically downloaded and waiting for you as a notification. Tapping on the notification instantly opens the file so you’ll never have to go dig for the file in your email or Dropbox folders ever again.

– With Pushbullet, you can also push links right into your phone’s notification tray. Just tap the notification to go to the link.

– Instead of having to look up an address all over again on your phone after having found it on your computer, you can just push the address to your phone. It will open Google Maps right from the notification, making getting to navigation a breeze.

– And that’s just the beginning, you can also send checklists, notes & reminders, and more.

You may have read where the CEO at Amazon has a vision, of not too far in the future, where you can order a product from Amazon and have it delivered to your doorstep via a drone; but, “What if an Amazon delivery drone crashes into you??? (and 6 other key questions)…

image

Will spotting Amazon’s fleet of “Prime Air” drones soon be “as normal as seeing mail trucks on the road today”? That’s what Amazon is saying, after CEO Jeff Bezos explained Sunday that the company would, in the future, deliver packages by quadcopter. However, that future may be a bit further out than the revolutionary retailer can say.. READ MORE

The 100 Best Android Apps of 2013

@ PCMag.com

PCMag always comes up with the best lists of tech related items. This list is no exception. If you are into Android, this is a must see list that has been rebuilt from scratch.

While 100 apps is a far more manageable slice of the one million plus apps in the Google Play store, it’s still a challenge to keep up to date. That’s the nature of a platform as enormous and dynamic as Android. Our plan is to update the list frequently to keep it from becoming an ossified mess filled with broken and unhip apps… CHECK IT OUT HERE

Canon PIXMA MX922 Wireless Color Photo Printer with Scanner, Copier and Fax

When I am in the need to purchase tech items, such as a printer, I head over to Amazon to see if the item is available (which it most likely is), then I pull up the customer reviews (from real people). I know some of the reviews may be planted, but the majority are for real and it can give you a good handle on what to expect. ES File Explorer File Manager

I cannot rave enough about the Android app called ES File Explorer Manager. If you need an app to manage the files on your Android device, this is the one to get. What has sold me on ES File Explorer is the networking capabilites that is built into the app (such as LAN, Cloud, FTP and Bluetooth). For example, instead of installing separate apps for your online file storage accounts, you can access those accounts through ES File Explorer (accounts such as the popular GDrive, Box, Drop Box, & SkyDrive). What I especially like is that I can access the shared files and folders on my desktop PC to move files to and from my Android Devices (and the computer).

image

ES File Explorer is a free, full-featured file and application manager. It functions as all of these apps in one: file manager, application manager, task killer, cloud storage client (compatible with Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive, Box.net, Sugarsync, Yandex, Amazon S3, and Ubuntu One), FTP client, and LAN Samba client.

It provides access to pictures, music, video, documents, and other files on both your Android devices and your computers.

To give an idea of my first impressions, I found an article by Paul Thurrott that parallels my thoughts exactly…

First, and perhaps most important, this is a pretty special device. At just $350 for the 16 GB version and $400 for the 32 GB version, the Google Nexus 5 is an affordable and attractive device. It’s not a “hero” phone like the Galaxy S4, HTC One X, iPhone 5S or Lumia 1020. But it’s also not a bargain basement burner. This is a solid and well-made smart phone handset… READ MORE

Google Terms of Service Update – How your Profile name and photo may appear (including in reviews and advertising)

image

Your friends, family and others may see your Profile name and photo, and content like the reviews you share or the ads you +1’d. This only happens when you take an action (things like +1’ing, commenting or following) – and the only people who see it are the people you’ve chosen to share that content with. On Google, you’re in control of what you share. This update to our Terms of Service doesn’t change in any way who you’ve shared things with in the past or your ability to control who you want to share things with in the future… READ MORE

Today’s Geek Squeaks – October 10, 2013

A summary of Today’s Geek Squeaks:

Squeak #1 – (My Streaming Radio Favorite): Can’t explain it, but got up this morning (at 5 AM) and started the day off with some classic rock. My favorite online music service, which is a search engine of sorts, is RadioTuna. You can even download their desktop player app or embed their radio widget into your site (SEE BELOW);

Squeak #2 – (Arranging and Pinning Tabs In Google Chrome): Decided today to find you a short tutorial on how to arrange and pin tabs in Google Chrome. Many folks are unaware of this feature which can be quite handy. For example, the RadioTuna site that I mentioned in Squeak #1, I simply pinned the site so that I could listen to my music and would not accidentally close the site’s tab (SEE BELOW);

Squeak #3 – (A Computer Cleanup Option): TCAT Shelbyville has a quick tutorial on how to take advantage of a recent Microsoft update that could give you between 2 to 6GB’s of additional free space (SEE BELOW); and,

Squeak #4 – (A Neat Way To Dock A Bare SATA Drive ): An external dock that provides a convenient and direct connection from a SATA (SATA, SATA II, SATA III) HDD/SSD to your PC or Notebook (SEE BELOW)…

How To Pin and Arrange Tabs In Google Chrome

@ Google

You can easily rearrange the tabs at the top of your browser window.

To reorder your tabs, click a tab and drag it to different position along the top of the browser window.

Rearrange tabs

To move a tab into a new window, click and drag the tab down past the address bar. You’ll see a thumbnail of the tab you’re moving. Similarly, to move the tab to a different window, click and drag the tab from its original window to the top of the destination window. The tab should pop in automatically.

Drag tabs

If you don’t want a particular tab to be moving around, you can pin the tab to the left of your browser window. Right-click the tab and select Pin tab. You can tell that a tab is pinned if it’s smaller in size and displays just the site’s icon.

Besides the tips listed above, you can take advantage of many keyboard shortcuts available for windows and tabs in Google Chrome.

How to restore, refresh, or reset your PC

Applies to Windows 8 and Windows RT – If you’re having problems with your PC, you can try to restore, refresh, or reset it. Restoring your PC is a way to undo recent system changes you’ve made. Resetting your PC reinstalls Windows but deletes your files, settings, and apps—except for the apps that came with your PC… SEE HOW HERE
