Geek Squeaks (#2015-34) FEATURING — Samsung’s 18.4″ Galaxy View Tablet (can pre-order now) — and MORE GREAT STUFF

Samsung’s 18.4″ Galaxy View Tablet (can pre-order now) – Yes you are seeing that right. Samsung has developed an 18.4″ tablet called the Galaxy View that is in comparison to carrying a portable TV around; AND, that is exactly what I think Samsung is thinking in regards to this hugeous tablet. The pricing on this ($599) is a little steep for my pocketbook; however, if the price were to come within reason, I may consider the Galaxy View for home-based usage.

There are mixed reviews on this, from CNET’sSamsung has just taken the wraps off the best tablet we may have ever seen”, to the Verge’s “Samsung might’ve just priced itself out of success”… The Galaxy View is slated for release on November 6th and can be pre-ordered now… To see all the specs — CLICK HERE — scroll down the page and then click on “See All Specs”.

How To Bypass Android’s Secured Lock Screen – If you do not have your Android smartphone (or tablet) locked down, I suggest that you take the time and lock it down. For example, to use my Nexus 5, I enter a pin number in order to operate the device.  The ONLY problem I see with locking down your device is the chance you forget the pattern, pin or password that you used. Well, don’t fret, I came across this article,7 Ways to Bypass Android’s Secured Lock Screen.  A lot of folks don’t want to lock down their devices due that it is an inconvenience; however if you ever lose the device you will soon learn that you wished you had taken the precaution of securing it.

Star Wars Here We Come – You may already be aware that the Navy (aboard the USS Ponce) has deployed a laser weapon that can take down small boats, drones and other light aircraft. I have seen videos of this technology in action. Inexpensive to operate, automated targeting and no noise. All you see is flames being generated from the intended target. Soon, Air Force fighters will carry laser cannons, cyber weapons by 2020 (read @ arstechnica). Folks, we are entering another era of warfare that is an indicator that star wars may not be that far off.

Add Multi-Tab Functionality To Windows 10 File Explorer – With a multi-tab file utility you can open multiple folders in the same Windows. The Windows 10 File Explorer does not have that capability, but you can make it happen by installing the extension called Clover. I nearly forgot about Clover after I upgraded to Windows 10 and when I did remember it, I was questioning, “Will it work on the Windows 10 platform with File Explorer?”.  The answer is “yes”… What is neat about Clover is that it works similar to the tabs in the Google Chrome browser. You can pin tabs and the feature I especially like is that you can add your favorite folders to the bookmark bar (for easy and fast access). I have added Clover to the downloads page (posted under the FREE SOFTWARE swarm)…

Did you know that today’s digital cameras and smartphone cameras will implant into the EXIF data of the picture the lattitude and longitude of where the picture was taken? IMPORTANT – You need to read this article to learn about the consequences of this and what you can do to stop it.

Most people still don’t know that their tablet, camera or smartphone might be tagging their latitude and longitude.   Why is this dangerous?  It can show the location of where you or your family is at.  It can give away corporate data or information that can harm your corporation… READ MORE

Canon PIXMA MX922 Wireless Color Photo Printer with Scanner, Copier and Fax

When I am in the need to purchase tech items, such as a printer, I head over to Amazon to see if the item is available (which it most likely is), then I pull up the customer reviews (from real people). I know some of the reviews may be planted, but the majority are for real and it can give you a good handle on what to expect. In this case I was browsing around for an economical printer and I happened across the Canon PIXMA MX922 that has favorable reviews and is just the size I need for the space on my desk.

ES File Explorer File Manager

I cannot rave enough about the Android app called ES File Explorer Manager. If you need an app to manage the files on your Android device, this is the one to get. What has sold me on ES File Explorer is the networking capabilites that is built into the app (such as LAN, Cloud, FTP and Bluetooth). For example, instead of installing separate apps for your online file storage accounts, you can access those accounts through ES File Explorer (accounts such as the popular GDrive, Box, Drop Box, & SkyDrive). What I especially like is that I can access the shared files and folders on my desktop PC to move files to and from my Android Devices (and the computer).

image

ES File Explorer is a free, full-featured file and application manager. It functions as all of these apps in one: file manager, application manager, task killer, cloud storage client (compatible with Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive, Box.net, Sugarsync, Yandex, Amazon S3, and Ubuntu One), FTP client, and LAN Samba client.

It provides access to pictures, music, video, documents, and other files on both your Android devices and your computers.

Trying A NEW Look With Geek Squeaks’

image

As I continue to transform the blog toward the Geek Squeaks’ theme, which I am truly enjoying,  I am looking to find the best way to layout and present information to you so that you can quickly get a good idea of what the content of the post is about.

The layout I am experimenting with, starting today, begins with a brief intro summary followed up with brief mini-posts with links to the larger picture. If you subscribe to the blog via email or rss feed, you will generally see the brief intro summary and hopefully that will entice you to visit and explore the site more.

Snap2HTML

This utility I currently use to take a snapshot of my program files directory and my portable apps directory. I do this in the event of a system crash. I can refer back to this snapshot to see what programs I had installed. I can see where Snap2HTML could be useful in a variety of scenarios.

image

Snap2HTML takes a “snapshot” of folder structures on your harddrive and saves as HTML files. What’s unique about Snap2HTML is that the HTML file uses modern techniques to make it feel more like a “real” application, similar to Windows Explorer, displaying a treeview with folders that you can click to view the files contained within (see example output). There is also a built in file search. Still, everything is contained in a single HTML file that you can easily store or distribute… GET IT HERE

The Coming Risk of Scam “Obamacare” Sites

image

In the United States on October 1, 2013 a major provision of the Affordable Care Act (also popularly known as “Obamacare”) goes into effect. The Health Insurance Exchange will go live. These sites are where people will be able to sign up for health care coverage themselves rather than through their employer.

When a person starts looking through sites to find one, at this time, they’re faced with the challenge that there’s no official marking or labeling that they can look at on a site to know that it’s an officially sanctioned site.

The next problem is that when applying for health care coverage, you have to provide all of your most sensitive personal information not only for yourself but your entire family. Most of us won’t give our social security numbers out willingly. But when it comes to health care, the industry uses that information so regularly that we’ve come to accept handing that information over as a matter of course (even if we don’t like it).

Put these two things together and you’ve got a situation where people are primed to give away their most critical personal information to legitimate sites but can’t be sure of finding their way to those legitimate sites… READ MORE AT TREND MICRO

Discover Breaking News As Soon As It Breaks

Another sad day in the United States. Two bombs exploded in the crowded streets near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, killing three people and injuring more than 130 in a bloody scene of shattered glass and severed limbs that raised alarms that terrorists might have struck again in the U.S. – Source (AP)

I started thinking is there a service out there that can provide us with breaking news as it happens and push it out there to our computers, smartphones and tablets? Sadly, in today’s world, getting the news as fast as you can is important toward maintaining one’s safety.

The service I came across that pushes the biggest breaking stories as they happen, 24 hours a day, is called just that, Breaking News.

Breaking News App

Breaking News is part of the of the NBC News Digital Network; however, the service is a fully independent, agnostic news organization that brings you the biggest stories as they happen, 24 hours a day, from more than a 160 news and eyewitness sources across the globe. Breaking News also is available as an app that will work off of the Android, Kindle Fire, iPad, iPhone, Windows Phone, Windows 8 and Samsung Smart TV platforms.

Going back to this tragic event, my heart goes out to anyone that was a victim of this senseless act and I pray that the people of this country, who feel there is division, show the world that we are truly one nation under God that can come together in time of need.

CloudOn brings Microsoft Office® to your Tablet Computer and Phone for FREE

Appears in today’s world of computing we are definitely moving away from the desktop form of computing to the more mobile form of computing, such as tablets and smartphones. In the end, no matter which direction we go, we still need to use the computer, whether it be in the form of desktop or tablet, to get our work done.

Working on a Microsoft Word, Excel or Powerpoint  file on a tablet vs. a desktop can be a real challenge. As we continue to move toward the tablet form of computing I am seeing more and more applications that are trying to emulate the desktop experience of using Word, Excel or Powerpoint on the tablet. As a matter of fact, I have many of these types of apps installed on my tablet and really in the end I am not using them to edit or create documents; instead, I use them more or less as a document viewers.

This past week I happened across another Android and iPad app, called CloudOn that really looks promising and is very close to emulating the desktop when it comes to creating, reviewing and editing your Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint files. Not only that, CloudOn can connect directly to your Box, Dropbox, Google Drive and SkyDrive Accounts; AND, the real topper is that CloudOn’s file viewer can view virtually any type of file (including PDF, JPG, PNG, GIF, etc.).

image

So far, what I am experiencing, is a pretty darn good app that seems to have the right fine tuning in place for working with my Microsoft Office files; PLUS, CloudOn with its’ powerful viewing capabilities will replace many of the separate apps I have installed for those purposes.

The CloudOn Workspace allows you to:

• Use Microsoft Word®, Excel® and PowerPoint® on your Android Tablet and Phone to create, review and edit documents.
• Rename, delete and manage documents with your Dropbox, Box, Google Drive and SkyDrive accounts.
• View virtually any type of file, including: PDF, JPG, PNG, GIF, etc.
• Share files as links or attachments via email directly from the workspace.
• Display, edit or create charts, change formatting, spell check, insert comments, etc into any Word, Excel or PowerPoint files.
• Use the FileSpace to see a log of all the activity on file including edits, notifications and notes.
• Track changes while reviewing Word documents.
• Use pivot tables and insert formulas in Excel workbooks.
• Display and edit transitions in PowerPoint slides and present in full presentation mode.
• Open files directly from your device email accounts as well as Dropbox, Box, Google Drive and SkyDrive.
• Automatically save documents to avoid losing changes.

A Hard Drive That Has Its’ Own Wi-Fi Network

You have to love technology… Seagate has an external hard drive available that is called Wireless Plus. This drive has its own Wi-Fi network built-in, so you can wirelessly stream your media and files to your wi-fi devices such, as your tablet or smartphone. The cool thing about the Wireless Plus drive is that it acts as a router. You do not need to be connected to the internet to access this drive.

You need no wires with this drive, at all.  It has a built-in rechargeable battery that will give you up to 10 hours life.  Imagine jumping in the car, powering the Wireless Plus up to stream movies to the kids’ tablets.

Wireless Plus has its own Wi-Fi network, so you can wirelessly stream your media and files to your tablet or smartphone on-the-go and off-the-grid

The free Seagate Media app for iOS and Android makes it easy to navigate and enjoy content wherever you go

1TB of built-in storage, which means you can load up to 500 movies or thousands of songs, photos and documents

Allows up to eight tablets and smartphones to access and store content at the same time

Wireless Plus creates its own Wi-Fi network, so there is no need for an Internet connection and you don’t have to use your data plan

Download movies and other media to your device, so you can enjoy your content later, when not connected to Wireless Plus

Game consoles, smart TVs, connected Blu-ray players and other DLNA devices can access the content on Wireless Plus whenever you have it connected to your home network via Wi-Fi

Up to 10-hour battery life

Wireless Speaker Adapter for Bluetooth Audio Devices

It is amazing the sound quality that can be had from our smartphones and tablet computers; especially, when you can drive that sound to a your speakers or home theater system. One way to accomplish this, without the mess of wires and actually connecting the device to the speakers, is to use a wireless speaker adapter for bluetooth enabled audio devices (such as your iphone, android phone, ipad and android tablet).

I went on the hunt for such an adapter and came up with the Logitech Wireless Speaker Adapter for Bluetooth Audio Devices that is not only made by a reputable manufacturer, but is cost effective and carries a good review rating.

Wireless audio streaming

  • Instantly stream music, movie soundtracks, Pandora and game audio from your tablet or smartphone to your home speakers
  • Great for iPhone, iPad, Android phones or any Bluetooth-enabled audio device
  • Far better sound quality than you get from your mobile device’s tiny built-in speakers

Amazon Drops The Price On The Kindle Fire HD 8.9” Tablet

Back in January I featured the Kindle Fire HD tablet as the tech product of the week. This week is sort of a repeat on the Kindle Fire HD and the reason is simply this:  I noticed that Amazon has dropped the price $30 on the 8.9” Wi-Fi model and $100 on the 8.9” 4G LTE model (with data plans). I am sure this is to keep Amazon competitive and my guess is that they have something else coming at us on the horizon. If you want to get on board with a tablet, the Kindle HD Fire with the price drop is an excellent opportunity.

Is The Microsoft Surface Pro Tablet Computer Going To Hold Up To The Competition?

The best description I can give for Microsoft Surface Pro is that it is a laptop in tablet form. It will run the same programs that you have been running with Windows 7; BUT, will this be enough to standup to the competition (the Android Tablets and iPad)?

Microsoft Surface Pro

I am a Windows user, always have been, but there is two things that is holding me back from the Surface Pro, and has me questioning Microsoft’s strategy:

  1. The price of $899+ is too salty for my pocketbook. For 899+ I can get a pretty decent Ultrabook with a touch screen. Granted the Surface Pro is comparable to the full Windows desktop and notebook computer experience that I have always been used to; however, after personally using and experiencing the simplicity of the Android Tablet (at a much lesser price), and the iPad, I cannot see existing home based computer users or the new generation of users (our kids and grandkids) going for Microsoft’s flavor of the tablet (Pro or RT Models).

For example, I have two elderly friends of mine, one owning an Android Tablet and the other owning an iPad. Both have expressed how easy it was for them to use these devices in comparison to their Windows based computers. As a matter of fact, they are spending less time at the keyboard.

  2. The Surface Pro (best model) ships with a 128 GB of space and from what I am reading this space can drop dramatically to around 89 GBs with Windows 8, Microsoft Office and the built in Windows apps installed (click here). Also, I have noticed that many of the Windows Store apps can be quite large in file or install size compared to the typical apps installed on the Android OS and iOS (iPad) platforms.

I don’t want to sound too negative about Microsoft Surface, because I am a true Windows based user who has lived in the operating system for years; BUT, that has been my passion, my hobby, my life blood… Most people I know could care less about computers or Microsoft Windows. All they want is an easy computer (internet) experience and they want it at a reasonable cost; whether it is Android, iOS (iPad) or Microsoft. In other words, I am starting to realize that the writing may be on the wall and that myself, desktop computing and Microsoft is becoming old school pretty fast.

I would love to hear insight on this from the experts in the field and from the everyday computer user at home.  (see a related article here, called Rethinking Tablets, at TTC Shelbyville – a Tennessee Tech School).

Maxthon Cloud Browser for Windows

We all are familiar with web browsers, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, and Safari; however, much is not said about Maxthon. Currently, I have Maxthon loaded on my Android phone and tablet and I have found it to be the best mobile device web browser out there. I think if you give the mobile version of Maxthon a try, I think you will find that it closely replicates the same browsing experience that you experience on your desktop computer.

mx3DC

I just learned yesterday that the developers of Maxthon recently released a NEW desktop version of Maxthon, called Maxthon Cloud Browser. I noticed that they had a portable version of Maxthon Cloud Browser available for download, so I decided to give it a spin.

To be honest (and I am still testing this), I am very impressed. I don’t have anything available to test page loads, but I can tell you from experience, this is probably one of the fastest browsers I have ever experienced. Also, this browser is loaded with a ton of built-in features (such as screen gestures, a dial pad, dual page view, a resource sniffer, a screen capture utility, and more…).  I do have to admit, which is a fun thing for me, I had to do some exploring in order to find a lot of the features and how to turn things on and off (i.e. the sidebar).

What the main concept of Maxthon Cloud Browser is that Maxthon Cloud Browser is not limited to a single device ecosystem or operating system: It moves files, data and web session information from browser to browser, unconfined by a single set of cloud products or devices.

If you really want to try something NEW, download the portable version of Maxthon Cloud Browser and give it a try!  I think you may see that this Browser, not likely to break the backs of Firefox, Internet Explorer or Chrome; is a browser that may have a chance of coming out of nowhere.

Core Features:

  • Lightning fast speed – Maxthon Cloud uses an optimized web engine that loads webpages and runs applications faster than any other browsers.
  • Cloud syncing – Maxthon Cloud syncs user data, history and tabs across any platform their choice.
  • Cloud download – Simultaneous storage of user downloads in the cloud;
  • Cloud storage – You can create their own storage space in the cloud.
  • Cloud pushing – You can push content (webpages, text, pictures and links) from any webpage to any device running Maxthon Cloud.

Watch FREE Movies and TV Shows On Your Android Phone or Tablet

With tablet computers (and smartphones) projected to be the hot item again this year, today’s post is pointed toward those who have an android tablet or those who are wishing for one for Christmas.

One of the neat things with tablet computers (and smartphones) is that you can do just about anything with them; even stream videos, movies, TV etc… to the devices. The problem is that most services that stream movies and TV require a paid subscription.

Today I want to share with you, a cloud based  (TV and Movie) service called Crackle that gives you the ability to watch full-length Hollywood movies & TV shows on your tablet or phone (and computer) — Free and on demand. What you are going to find at Crackle is not the latest and greatest, but you will find content that is pretty darn good for being FREE.

Crackle

* Watch full-length Hollywood movies and TV series
* FREE to download app, FREE to watch
* Unlimited, on demand viewing
* New movies and TV episodes added monthly
* Genres including: action, anime, comedy, crime, horror, thriller, sci-fi and anime
* Optimized for both phones and tablets
* Browse Movies, TV, Originals, Collections and Genres
* Build and manage your Watchlist for viewing on the app or online at Crackle.com.
* Stream HQ video via 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi
* App works in US, Canada, UK and Australia

Note:  You can get Crackle on your desktop or notebook computer at the main site [ here ].

Access SkyDrive From Any Android Smartphone And Tablet Running Android 2.3+ Or Later.

Folks, if you are looking for a nice, dependable and easy to use online file storing (and sharing) service, I am highly recommending Microsoft’s SkyDrive. With SkyDrive you will get 7 GBs of space for FREE and can opt in to purchasing additional space if need be. This service continues to get better and better all the time and has become my main online file storage service.  I encourage you to visit the link above to learn more about SkyDrive.

As this service continues to evolve, Microsoft recently made announcement that a SkyDrive app has been developed exclusively for Android 2.3 or later.

SkyDrive for Android

SkyDrive for Android

So, if you have an Android based phone or tablet AND you are a SkyDrive user, this app is a must-have app.  I have been testing it on my Toshiba Thrive Tablet and it has performed flawlessly. I even have SkyDrive setup to access the files (and drives) on my main PC anywhere I have internet access (see recent article, Access Any File You Need From Your PC From Anywhere With The NEW SkyDrive). This option alone is like having my main PC tethered to my tablet.

With SkyDrive for Android, you can now easily access and share files on the go. You can also upload photos or videos from your phone to SkyDrive.

• Access all of your SkyDrive content including files shared with you.
• View recently used documents.
• Choose multiple photos or videos to upload from your phone.
• Share your files and photos – send a link in email or in another app.
• Open your SkyDrive files in other Android apps.
• Manage your files – delete, or create new folders.

Get A Great Paid Android App For FREE Every Day

After getting my tablet PC, the Toshiba Thrive, I was excited and motivated to learn more about the Android Operating System and the apps that are available.  If you know me and follow my blog, you know that the blog predominantly features FREE software. When I started using my tablet PC I soon discovered that there were numerous FREE apps available through the Android Market.  I plan to feature some of those apps here on the blog.  Another thing I noticed is that many of the Android Apps, that are paid apps, are reasonably priced; however, I still like FREE.

Recently, while surfing through Amazon.com (one of my favorite places), I noticed that Amazon has an Appstore for Android, as well.  The Appstore also features FREE apps in addition to the paid apps.  What caught my attention was that Amazon features a paid Android App for FREE every day.

Get the Story on Android

What is all this talk about Android, Cupcake, Donut, Éclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb and the soon to be released Ice Cream Sandwich? Now I am hearing talk of Jelly Bean.

To put this all in perspective. Android is an operating system, like Windows is an operating system. The Android OS differs from the Microsoft Windows OS in that it is engineered to work on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. The delicacies’ named Cupcake, Donut, Éclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean are the names given to the version upgrades of the Android OS. For example, my Toshiba Thrive tablet PC is running the Android OS Honeycomb V3.2

To get the full history of the development of Android, I found a nice infographic, at xcubelabs, that tells the Android Story.

[FEATURED PRODUCT] – A Stylus for Your Tablet PC or Touchscreen Phone

Following the purchase of my tablet PC (Toshiba Thrive – see review), the one tool I went for to make my tablet computer experience more enjoyable (and cleaner) was an omni-directional” capacitive stylus.  Not knowing there are literally many different stylus’ available [SEE HERE], by chance I came across a stylus made by Targus. As a matter of fact, not knowing anything about omni-directional capacitive stylus’, the one that I purchased actually was advertised to work for the iPad.  I took the chance that it would work with my Toshiba Thrive.

Stylus

What I soon discovered that this particular stylus works great with my Toshiba Thrive and it is my conclusion it will work just as great with any capacitive type touch screen.  The good here with this is this:

The cost for this particular stylus was less than $12 bucks [see here]; however there are many stylus options out there [see here].  There is even a stylus made by Targus that is 3-in-1 (ink pen, laser pointer, and stylus).  This is especially useful if you are a business person who makes presentations using your tablet.

If you are concerned about all of the fingerprints (which could be a potential hygiene issue) on your capacitive touchscreen, then the stylus is the way to go. After using the stylus, I found my screen much cleaner after use and I am at a loss now if I don’t use the stylus or can’t find it.  That is the one disadvantage, it can be easily misplaced; however, there is a hole in the top of the stylus where you can tether it to the tablet.

The precision of the stylus is right on target; even when scrolling a screen (horizontal or vertical); hunt and peck typing; playing a game, and will even work with any sketching apps you may be using.
