Want to customize, and I mean really “customize”, your very own browser start page (also called your “home page”). If so, take a look at Start.me… I have been using this service for quite some time and it continues to improve. I currently have my Start.me (home page) setup as a dashboard where I can, at a glance, see my emails, task, calendar, weather, calculator, news, etc… Big, big timesaver! This is all done via widgets that you can install and move around. Highly recommended…
We spend a lot of time on the Internet. We browse the web to discover. Or we search for something specific, like a delicious recipe or a motivational article. start.me’s bookmark manager lets you easily save and organize all of your favorite webpages on a customizable dashboard. There are numerous online graphic design editors out there. It is just the matter of finding them. This is where the site “I Love Free Software” comes into play in finding the gems. They recently posted and reviewed “5 Online Postcard Maker Websites” for you to try and my favorite on their list is Crello. For example, they have a template for Facebook posts that I use to make my posts look original.
Here are 5 free online postcard maker websites. With these websites, you can make beautiful postcards in a matter of minutes and print or download them for free.
Elastic, minimal, mobile-first and read-only Reddit web-app client. If you are a follower of Reddit, then you know how “not user friendly” their web page is. This web-app client, called Reeddit, solves the ugliness by cleaning up the interface to only show you the most important information from the posts and comments. Basically, in a nutshell, it is a “read-only” application that does not allow voting, points or commenting. In my case, when it comes to Reddit, I am not into that anyway; however, Reddit is one of those popular sites where you are liable to see, read and learn anything. From what I researched, Reedit is an open-sourced application (on GitHub).
If you do not know what Reddit is: Reddit is an American social news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website. Registered members submit content to the site such as links, text posts, and images, which are then voted up or down by other members. [source: Wikipedia]

One of the most overlooked Google Doc applications is Google Drawings. The main reason for this is that Google Drawings is not readily available in the listing of the other Google Docs (like Docs, Sheets and Slides). What I am finding is that Google Drawings is a powerful (easy to use) graphic designer that can be used for multi-purposes (i.e. blog postings, signs, cards, facebook posts, flowcharts, organizational charts, website wireframes, mind maps, etc…).
As I mentioned, it is not easy to find or get to. Below is step-by-step on how to get to Google Drawings. Once you are there, bookmark it in your web browser. You can also get to it, if you are a Google Chrome browser user, by going to the Google Chrome Store and downloading the Google Drawings app [here].
- On your computer, go to Google Drive.
- In the top left, click New More Google Drawings.
- Insert shapes, lines or text with the editing tools.
- When you’re finished, you can add your drawing to another file.

As a blogger and reviewer of tech products, I often receive emails from developers promoting their products. Recently I received an email from a developer called PearlMountain, that specializes in graphic design software, requesting I take a look at an online web app that they have put together called “DesignCap Poster Maker”. Ironically, as some of you may know from some of my past blog postings, I have been messing around with a Google Chromebook, which is dependent of online web applications; and, that I have been on the hunt for applications, such as the “DesignCap Poster Maker”.
So far, from what I have tested out, this application is a keeper. I have been looking for an online app to make posters and signs and so far this one is the best one yet. You can create a poster from scratch or by using one of the numerous templates provided to get started. You can add photos, text, clipart, and backgrounds (in layers), with ease. For example, below is a poster I put together, in a matter of minutes, using this application.
* Hundreds of fully customizable templates.
* Thousands of resources: a wide variety of stock photos, clipart images, shapes, fonts, and backgrounds.
* Powerful editing tools.
* Free and easy to use.
DesignCap’s poster maker allows anyone to create custom posters with lots of templates, clipart, and fonts, etc. in minutes, no advanced graphic skills needed. Try it for free now!
Did you know you can customize your own web start page to your liking by using online web services that exclusively specialize in start pages (also called home pages). I am one who loves customizing menus, start pages, launchers, etc… I have found by customizing these components, such as my browsers start page, it makes it easier for myself and others to navigate the web; PLUS, there is a big leap in productivity when you do this. Typically, we all go to the same web sites over and over; SO, why not set up a customized page where you can compile your launching points (or web links) from one page.
So how do I get started? I went on the hunt on the internet and found the “Top 10 Personalized Start Pages for Your Web Browser”. Each of the top ten reflected I have personally tried over periods of time. The “Start Page” service I settled with was Symbaloo; with NetVibes as a close second. I have used both for many years.
You can click on the screenshot below to get an idea of how my start page looks like using Symbaloo…
To understand more of what I am talking about, I encourage you to click the source link below to preview the 10 Start Pages services (which are FREE).
Personalized start pages can kickstart your browser by opening directly to a custom home page designed by you and with your interests in mind.
If you are not using Pocket, I highly recommend that you do. Typically, in the past, I would bookmark sites I wanted to go back to in my browser. Well, that all changed when Pocket came out. Pocket is a free service that makes it easy to discover great content that’s personalized to your interests, and save this content so you can return to it later – on any device, at any time. It’s your one-stop destination for reading engaging content, catching up on your favorite blogs and news sources, and watching videos that you discovered but weren’t in the right place to watch. Now, there’s no longer a reason to worry about finishing up an article before getting to work, sending the kids to school, or making that next cup of coffee.
At launch, Pocket was actually known as Read It Later, before the App Store even existed. But after a 2012 name change, it has evolved into a seriously handy app. Beyond articles, you can save videos, images, and anything that has a URL, really. It archives whatever you’ve saved so you can access it offline (except videos), which is particularly helpful when cell service is spotty.
I encourage you to give Pocket a try. You will not regret it; AND, as an added bonus check our the 12 Pocket Tips to Help You Read it Later at PCMag.com
Google Docs is a very powerful word processor that is available (for FREE) to anyone who has a Google (Gmail) Account. One feature in Google Docs that you may be interested in trying is the “Voice Type” feature where you can type and edit by speaking. This feature not only works in Google Docs, but also works in the Google Slides speaker notes. Voice Type only works when opening Google Docs through the Google Chrome web browser and you will need a working microphone connected to your computer. The newer notebook PC’s have mic’s built in.
To try Voice Type, follow the instructions below:
- Turn on your microphone.
- Open a document in Google Docs.
- Click on “Tools”; then “Voice Typing” (a microphone box will appear)
- When you are ready to dictate or speak, click on the microphone icon.
- Speak clearly using a normal volume and speed.
- When done, click on the microphone icon.
- After you start voice typing, you can use commands to edit and format your document. For example, “Select paragraph,” “italics,” or “Go to the end of the line.” (Note: There are numerous commands you can use to edit and format a document. To get a listing of these commands, “CLICK HERE“).

To get started using Pocket, go to getpocket.com, sign up for an account (for FREE). To make the best of Pocket you can then save your finds’ from your email, browser or via the 500+ apps that is integrated with Pocket.
In my case, when using my computer and the Google Chrome Browser, I installed the “Save To Pocket” browser extension for Google Chrome (source link below). The extension is loaded with many features that allows you to capture and save content that is of interest to you… Once you get the hang of using Pocket, whether it be on your computer or smartphone, you will wonder how you did without it.

- Quickly add tags
- See related recommendations when you save to Pocket
- See trending stories and topics when you open a new tab

This is a question I recently searched for using Google. What I found is that there is no easy way on Facebook to download a video that has been posted by another party; however, I did find savefrom.net that will download a Facebook video providing you have the URL for the video.
To get the URL, simply right mouse click on the video, click on “show video URL”, then click on the “URL” (to highlight it), then hit “Ctrll+C” to copy the URL to the clipboard (or you can right mouse click and select “copy” which will copy the URL to the clipboard). After you have copied the URL to the clipboard, go to savefrom.net and enter the URL in the input field at the top of the main page. This action should present a download button where you can initiate the download (which will either be in MP4-HD or MP4-SD file formats).
With safefrom.net you can also download audio, video, and other types of files from various websites and social networks such as youtube.com, vk.com, vimeo.com, and others.

Word Search Puzzles are a great way to relax, to exercise the mind and to learn new words. I happened, just by chance, to come across a very nice online word search site (called WordSearch1.com) that I thought was worth sharing with my readers.
What I particularly like about WordSearch1 is that you can go to a full screen mode where there are no distracting advertisements. All puzzles are printable and you can even create your own puzzles (which makes this a great tool for educators).
WordSearch1.com has a large collection of pritable word search games. The front page will randomly generate a word search from a dictionary of words. Check out the definitions of those words by hovering over the word on the left side of the game screen. My randomly generated word search puzzles are a great way to learn new dictionary words. All words are Scrabble legal, so use them to improve your play in Scrabble, Words With Friends or Lexulous.
[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] How To Type the “Degree” Symbol From The Keyboard – I always like sharing personal experiences here on the blog to show that I don’t pull these things out of thin air. Recently I was generating a report where I was typing out weather conditions (such as outside temperature). As I continued doing this I would always type out the word “degree” for the temperature (i.e. 90 degrees). It was at that point I started wondering if there is a way to generate the degree symbol from the keyboard?
If you look at your keyboard you will not visually find the symbol or character reference for the “degree symbol. What you have to do is use what is called “ALT CODES”…
If you hold down the Alt key and on the numeric keypad on the right of the keyboard, type 0176, or Alt+ 248, then when you release the Alt Key, a ° should be there.
If you are interested in learning some more ALT CODES, click on the ALT CODES REFERENCE SHEET below.

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] Have It All With A Solid State Hybrid Drive – If you have an older PC and you are looking for a performance boost, that gives you faster speed with capacity, you may want to take a look one of Seagate’s Solid State Hybrid Drives.
The hybrid drives by Seagate set aside approximately 6GB’s of ultra-fast NAND flash (same as used for SSD technology) to store the most frequently used data. What this means is that, as you use the computer, the hybrid drive learns what data you use frequently and stores it on the SSD side of the drive. As this happens over time you will notice that the load times of those frequently used application are greatly reduced. System boot times and system responsiveness are also noticeably improved using the hybrid form factor.
The Seagate® Desktop SSHD is designed to work in any standard desktop system. Unlike other hybrid solutions, there are no special drivers or software to install and configure. It installs and works just like a hard drive – only faster!

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] FREE Self Managing Android Battery Saving App – I am big on the Android Smartphones; currently owning a Nexus 5. It has become (literally) my computer in my pocket; however, I learned early on that it is important to monitor its’ battery life on a daily basis in order to get the most out of my computer in my pocket. To assist me with this task is the FREE Android App called Battery Doctor (Battery Saver).
I have been using this app for quite awhile and can attest that it will significantly improve your battery life. It is smart in that it self manages and optimizes your phone in a way that it will shutdown battery eating background apps and hardware (such as bluetooth, wifi, etc…) when these components are not in use (or are not needed). There is also power management features built into the app to let you know how much power your apps are consuming, how much battery is left, when is a good time to charge and when not too charge.
Overall, one of my favorite utilities on my phone that I highly recommend.
