Support “What’s On My PC” by Using One Of These Links (to buy at Amazon)

One way that I keep my blog going (financially) is through Amazon’s Affiliate Program. The way it works is if someone clicks an Amazon link on my blog and buys anything, a small (very small) percentage of profit is returned to support the blog. Over a period of time, the profit margin accumulates enough to pay for the domain name (whatsonmyp.blog).

For example, on the right side of the blog you will find “Best Sellers” (at Amazon) of electronic related products to include what is reflected in the list below. Click on any of the links (or the Best Sellers Logo), buy anything, and a small return is made back to What’s On My PC.

Geek Squeak #17-025: A Reasonable In Cost IP Security Camera That Works

I recently purchased (approximately 3 mos. ago) the YI Dome, 1080p HD, Pan/Tilt/Zoom, Wireless, IP Security Camera. I ended up calling it my “Catcam”. I typically access the camera, from anywhere, using my smartphone, but can access the camera from my laptop and desktop, as well. I ended up setting the camera up to watch through a window at the front of my house and with the pan/tilt/zoom control I can remotely control the camera to rotate to check on our cat when we are away.  It also has a built in mic, for which my wife talks to the cat (LOL)…  Nice little camera for the money;  and for me, has worked flawlessly.

Reverb Brings Amazon’s Alexa To Your Phone

Love Amazon’s Alexa???  If so, you may be interested in taking a look at Reverb. This app is currently in development and will only continue to improve. Simply install, log in to your Amazon account, and ask Alexa questions or give commands by holding down the microphone on the screen.

Reverb currently does not support the music component that Alexa supports. The app can be a little buggy at times and on my phone appears to conflict a little with “Google OK”, however, I was very impressed and expect that this app will only improve (and become quite popular).

If you need to learn more about Alexa’s commands, check this out “The complete list of Alexa commands so far“…

Reverb allows you to interact with Alexa from anywhere. Via Alexa, Reverb answers questions, reports traffic and weather, gives info on local businesses, provides sports scores and schedules, and more using the Alexa Voice Service.

Geek Squeaks (#2015-35) FEATURING — GEGeek NOW On Facebook — and MORE GREAT STUFF

GEGeek NOW On Facebook – The motherload of all tech sites, GEGeek, is now featuring their GEGeek Tech Toolkit on Facebook. The toolkit, available through donation at the main GEGeek web site, is a complete collection of over 400 tech related FREE programs and suites (all available from a menu launch utility). If you are an information technology professional the GEGeek website and the GEGeek Toolkit should automatically become part of your mindset. Mike and Jason at GEGeek have gone to great lengths to review, collect, and maintain the information (and toolkit) that is available. Jason recently joined Mike to assist in maintaining the motherload. I personally thank both of them (and I encourage you to do the same). After you donate to acquire the toolkit, you are then entitled to the upgrades (which occur on a regular basis).

WordWeb Upgraded To Support Windows 10WordWeb has been a mainstay on my computer for years. It is a very useful and comprehensive one-click English thesaurus and dictionary for Windows. It can be used to look up words from almost any program, showing definitions, synonyms and related words. It includes pronunciations and usage examples, and has helpful spelling and sounds-like links. I especially like the one click lookup where you hold the CTRL key and right mouse click on a word to get the definition. WordWeb can also be installed as a portable app. You will be prompted for that option after you run the install file. Also, if you like WordWeb and use Google Chrome, be sure to download their WordCaptureX browser extension…  NOTE: WordWeb has been added to the What’s On My PC download page under the FREE Software swarm.

Star Wars Here We Come – You may already be aware that the Navy (aboard the USS Ponce) has deployed a laser weapon that can take down small boats, drones and other light aircraft. I have seen videos of this technology in action. Inexpensive to operate, automated targeting and no noise. All you see is flames being generated from the intended target. Soon, Air Force fighters will carry laser cannons, cyber weapons by 2020 (read @ arstechnica). Folks, we are entering another era of warfare that is an indicator that star wars may not be that far off.

Add Multi-Tab Functionality To Windows 10 File Explorer – With a multi-tab file utility you can open multiple folders in the same Windows. The Windows 10 File Explorer does not have that capability, but you can make it happen by installing the extension called Clover. I nearly forgot about Clover after I upgraded to Windows 10 and when I did remember it, I was questioning, “Will it work on the Windows 10 platform with File Explorer?”.  The answer is “yes”… What is neat about Clover is that it works similar to the tabs in the Google Chrome browser. You can pin tabs and the feature I especially like is that you can add your favorite folders to the bookmark bar (for easy and fast access). I have added Clover to the downloads page (posted under the FREE SOFTWARE swarm)…

What were Amazon’s top three selling computers over the holidays?

PCWorld posted this interesting article about the top three selling computers over the holidays? Guess what they were…  CHROMEBOOKS!

Chances are that if you shopped for a cheap holiday PC on Amazon for the holidays, what you ended up buying was a Google Chromebook. Again.

Amazon said Friday the top three computers it sold between Nov. 1 and Dec. 25 were all Chromebooks, a first for the Google-powered computer. (Two of the three most popular computers Amazon shoppers bought during the 2013 holiday season were also Chromebooks—the third being a Windows-powered Asus Transformer. Amazon didn’t break out holiday computer sales for 2012.)

Amazon said the three most popular computer items were the Acer C720 Chromebook(11.6-inch, 2GB); the Asus (C300) Chromebook 13-inch with Gigabit WiFi (16GB, 2GB), an updateto the C200; and the HP 11-2010nr 11.6-inch Chromebook (Snow White). None of those are priced at higher than $250, at least on Amazon’s site… READ MORE @ PCWorld

A Chromebook is a laptop running Chrome OS as its operating system. The devices are designed to be used primarily while connected to the Internet, with most applications and data residing “in the cloud”. (source: Wikipedia)

Most Helpful Positive Review On The Samsung Galaxy S 8.4 Inch Tablet

After reviewing and researching the newer Android Tablet brands out there, I am pretty much sold on The Samsung Galaxy S 8.4 Inch Tablet. If you keep checking, you will find that Amazon will periodically drop the price from $399 to $349 (was at that price today when I wrote this post).  I could give some pretty good insight on this tablet; but, why reinvent the wheel (see most helpful positive review below).

Samsung Galaxy S 8.4 Inch Tablet

Samsung Galaxy S

You can get the Most Helpful Positive Review on this tablet by one of Amazon’s recognized “most trusted reviewers:

Amazing tablet, with a screen that brings color to life…

First Look: Hands on review

Rating 4.5 Stars (Excellent Tablet but not a perfect 5 star). Unfortunately there is no half rating with Amazon so I went with a 4

There is no question that Samsung has flooded the market with tablets in the past year. From low range to upper range. When the Tab Pro 8.4 came out a few months ago I knew that was the Android I have been waiting for. Of course had I known the Tab S was coming out I would have waited for this tablet. That takes nothing away from the Pro because it is an excellent tablet and I assume there will be further discounting. I broke up my review into sections so you can jump to a section faster… READ MORE

I Wish Someone Would Buy Me This Android Tablet

I love the Android devices and as Christmas nears I keep salivating over the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4-Inch Tablet. I have had the opportunity to handle one of these at the local box store and that is all it took. What is mesmerizing about this tablet is the display (Super AMOLED 2560×1600 WQXGA Resolution) that sets it apart from anything else out there. I like the idea of the microSD slot (upgradeable to 128GB), the 3 GB of ram, and that the engine under this lightweight thin tablet is a 1.9 GHz Exynos 5 Octa Processor (1.9 GHz Quad Core + 1.3 GHz Quad Core). The Amazon customer reviews are confirming what I am thinking on this.

I was thinking if I posted this on the blog, someone out there (like my wife), would send a poor blogger like me this Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 Inch Tablet… Oh, I almost forgot, shipping on these at Amazon are FREE…

Shop The Earth’s Biggest Selection

Many folks in my generation and the generation before me are reluctant to shop online for fear of being taken, receiving the wrong product and/or are worried that the return process is too much of a hassle.

I have been a shopper at Amazon for years, feeding my obsession for tech products and I have had nothing but a good experience with them. I am a frequent visitor of Amazon’s electronics and computer department; not only to shop, but to get customer reviews on tech products that I write about (or may be interested in sometime in the future).

When I am not shopping for tech I often head to their main directory listing (that many people overlook). The Directory, labelled as the Earth’s Biggest Selection, consists of various categories with sub-categories that will point you in the right direction. If you shop Amazon, it is a good idea to bookmark the directory in your browser (see below).

To help you out this Holiday season, to find that special gift for that special someone, I have listed the main categories below. Have a safe Holiday season: do something special for someone; and, let the shopping begin…

TECH DEAL – I Believe I Got A Good Deal On This ASUS Desktop Computer

After nearly 8 years I decided it was time to changeout my HP computer… After a great deal of research and shopping around I ended up settling for the ASUS M51BC-US018S Desktop (3.3 GHz AMD FX-8300 Processor, 8GB DDR3, 1TB HDD, Windows 8.1) at Amazon. Pricing on this computer at the time and date of this posting was listed as $519.00 with a $60 ASUS rebate = $459.00…

ASUS makes a really nice computer and this box is no exception. I am very pleased with not only the build; but also with the performance. What sold me on this PC is the AMD -FX8300 processor which is rated equivalent to an Intel i7 processor; that the memory can be upgraded up to 32GBs; and, there is 10 USB Ports (6-USB 2.0 and 4-USB 3.0). There is room for expansion in this PC; however, when I broke open the case to insert my Hauppauge WinTV card I found that insertion of the card to be tight due to the installed video card consuming a lot of the space. I did manage to get it installed and due to the power of this computer, watching TV on this computer is a much better experience than my older PC with better clarity and video performance.

There was one issue I ran into with the purchase with this computer. Amazon had it posted to indicate that there are two $30 rebates (from ASUS).  After processing the rebates I discovered that ASUS would only honor one rebate and apparently the two posted on Amazon are the same rebate. In the end, all was good…  I contacted Amazon, reported the issue, and they immediately credited me for the additional $30. I checked today when I posted this article and they are still showing the $60 rebate. So, if you want to chance it and buy this computer; you too may be able to take advantage of the $60 return on the purchase.

If interested in this PC, which is a relatively new posting at Amazon, with myself making the first customer review, reflected below is the specs, in much more detail than what is posted at Amazon:

Check Out What’s NEW at What’s On My PC

I am constantly trying out new ways to help drive traffic to the blog so that when a you land here you will leave with something that will encourage you to return. One of the most underused sections of the blog are the tabs at the top. I recently have added two NEW tabs that may be of interest.

What's On My PC

By clicking on these tabs (with the exception of Home and About Me) you will be taken to a wealth of tech related information, software, news, products, etc…

To explain each tab:

Bookmarks4Techs – This is another site that I maintain. Bookmarks4Techs.com is one of, if not, the largest listing of tech sites on the internet. If you have an interest in the world of computers and information technology, I think you will find this site to be a very valuable resource. I work hard to keep the site up to date; and, as a result you will frequently see changes in the listing. There are also some good RSS tech news feeds on the site, as well.

GEGeek – This site, in my opinion, ranks up there with being one of the most awesome tech resource sites out there. The site owner has a vast background in information technology and computers and has managed, over the years (with an obvious passion), to compile what you see on the site. Also, just to point out, make sure you check out the GEGeek Tech Toolkit while you are there. The toolkit is regularly updated and can be downloaded by clicking on the link at the top of the site.

Downloads – I put this together using an online cloud based service called NetVibes that compiles (daily) a large RSS listing of FREE software and download sites that are very reputable.

Tech News –  Again, using NetVibes I was able to compile a large listing of tech news feeds.

Tech Toys (NEW) – Many of the tech products I feature here on the blog I often use Amazon as a research point. Amazon does not necessarily always have the best pricing point, but it does have (in my opinion) one of the best customer review and ratings section. As a result of my passion for technology products I have put together, for the reader’s of this blog, an Amazon Affiliates Store (called What’s On My PC @ Amazon) that specifically features technology related products that can serve as a launching point for any tech products you may be looking for and wanting to learn more about. Simply visit the store and type into the search box whatever it is you are looking for.

Archives (NEW) – This is a new tab that I have put up that I consider the motherload. One of the problems with a blogging platform is many people will click on an article that was posted, but do not realize there are other articles, as well. If you click on the Archives tab you will land on a page that will literally list every blog article I have ever posted (which is nearing 2000 articles).

About – This page is my bio and yes I really do look like that picture…

Rick Robinette, What's On My PC

My What’s On My PC @ Amazon Store

Many of the tech products I feature here on the blog I often use Amazon as a research point.

You can also launch the store by clicking on the “Tech Toys” menu tab at the top of the blog.

What is really cool about this site is that it is directly tied into Amazon; but, much of the distractions you normally see have been eliminated so that you focus more on what you are looking for. Also, definitely use the search box (at the top left of the page) to narrow down what you are looking for AND if you need to go to directly to Amazon, click on the “Powered by Amazon” logo.

FEATURED TECH PRODUCT – Toshiba Encore 2 Windows 8 Tablet

USA Today had a feature tech write-up on the Toshiba Encore 2 that is worth a look see (titled: Review: Toshiba’s Encore 2 Windows tablet makes the grade) for those considering a full Windows 8 experience tablet at a price that is comparable (or better) than some of the other tablets (of this caliber) out there.

I also noticed that Amazon has the Encore 2 now available (click here) in the 10 inch model and (click here) in the 8 inch model.

Toshiba Encore™ 2

One of the first reviewers at Amazon had this to say about the Encore 2:

Got one yesterday at BB. Really like this tablet. Full windows 8.1 and MS Office 365 personal. You get to download another Office 365 on your home PC. You also get 1000 gb of storage on MS One Drive. Running ITunes off of my 14 gb of music on the micro SD card. Very good processor response. The 1 gb of Ram may have it limits, but no noticeable slow down. Overall, very happy. We also have an iPad and Samsung Galaxy. Cannot go wrong, when you consider the price and power of this 10 inch tablet…

Meet the Encore™ 2 tablet—a powerful performer that works the way you do. Thinner, faster, lighter and more capable than ever, this Windows® tablet with a brilliant 10.1-inch display and ultrafast Wi-Fi® goes from work to play in an instant. Get going right out of the box with a complimentary one-year subscription to Office 365™ Personal, capture video and take amazing photos with a built-in 5MP camera, synchronize across all your Windows® devices and much more. Powered by a quad-core Intel® Atom™ processor with InstantGo technology, this is one tablet that’s up for anything.

GEEK SQUEAKS – April 8th Is D-Day For Windows XP

If you are a Windows XP user and have been procrastinating about upgrading to Windows 8 or to a new PC (or you just plain do not care), here is the official word from Microsoft that may encourage you to move forward:

Microsoft has provided support for Windows XP for the past 12 years. But now the time has come for us (Microsoft), along with our hardware and software partners, to invest our resources toward supporting more recent technologies so that we can continue to deliver great new experiences.

As a result, after April 8, 2014, technical assistance for Windows XP will no longer be available, including automatic updates that help protect your PC.

If you continue to use Windows XP after support ends, your computer will still work but it might become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Also, as more software and hardware manufacturers continue to optimize for more recent versions of Windows, you can expect to encounter greater numbers of apps and devices that do not work with Windows XP.

April 8th Is D-Day For Windows XP

The key issues in the above notice is that you will no longer receive automatic updates, you will be vulnerable to security risks and viruses (which could compromise the security for a whole lot of people) and as time goes on you will experience software and hardware compatibility issues.

Canon PIXMA MX922 Wireless Color Photo Printer with Scanner, Copier and Fax

When I am in the need to purchase tech items, such as a printer, I head over to Amazon to see if the item is available (which it most likely is), then I pull up the customer reviews (from real people). ES File Explorer File Manager

I cannot rave enough about the Android app called ES File Explorer Manager. If you need an app to manage the files on your Android device, this is the one to get. What has sold me on ES File Explorer is the networking capabilites that is built into the app (such as LAN, Cloud, FTP and Bluetooth). For example, instead of installing separate apps for your online file storage accounts, you can access those accounts through ES File Explorer (accounts such as the popular GDrive, Box, Drop Box, & SkyDrive). What I especially like is that I can access the shared files and folders on my desktop PC to move files to and from my Android Devices (and the computer).

image

ES File Explorer is a free, full-featured file and application manager. It functions as all of these apps in one: file manager, application manager, task killer, cloud storage client (compatible with Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive, Box.net, Sugarsync, Yandex, Amazon S3, and Ubuntu One), FTP client, and LAN Samba client.

It provides access to pictures, music, video, documents, and other files on both your Android devices and your computers.

It  seems to be coming from the keyboard.

Today’s Geek Squeaks – September 6, 2013

A summary of Today’s Geek Squeaks:

Squeak #1: See what the developers (such as Agilebits, LastPass, mSeven and Siber Systems) are saying about the chances of others gaining access to your online password database. Myself, I am skeptical; however, after reading this article, I may consider one of these services to manage my passwords (see below);

Squeak #2: Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean and now Kit Kat.  All names for versions of the Android OS.  Read more below about KitKat and how Google (Android) came up with this name in honor of the candy bar that developers munched on while they were creating it… (see below);

Squeak #3: One of my favorite file managers is QDir!… I currently use it as a portable app on my computer (and flash drives) to manage the files and folders on my computer. QDir has been around for awhile now and the developer continues to make it better (see below)…

Amazon Drops The Price On The Kindle Fire HD 8.9” Tablet

Back in January I featured the Kindle Fire HD tablet as the tech product of the week. This week is sort of a repeat on the Kindle Fire HD and the reason is simply this:  I noticed that Amazon has dropped the price $30 on the 8.9” Wi-Fi model and $100 on the 8.9” 4G LTE model (with data plans). I am sure this is to keep Amazon competitive and my guess is that they have something else coming at us on the horizon. If you want to get on board with a tablet, the Kindle HD Fire with the price drop is an excellent opportunity.

Tech Product of the Week: Kindle Fire HD 7 Inch Tablet Computer

Looking for a tablet computer reminds me of the day when desktops started to flourish and everyone wanted one. It is like shopping for a car and by the end of the day you are more confused than you were at the beginning of the day.

Here is my take on Tablet Computers…  For the home based computer user, buy a reasonably priced Android OS based tablet, such as the Kindle Fire HD (7 inch). I cannot see putting out large amounts of money for a tablet; especially, when the next latest and greatest is just around the corner. We are only seeing the beginning of this type of technology.

I recently got my hands on the Kindle Fire HD and was very impressed. With the Kindle Fire you are really getting a great tablet that features a high definition display, great sound (Dolby Audio), dual-antenna Wi-Fi, a massive selection of Android Apps and much, much more for under $200…  I especially liked that the Fire has a Micro USB 2.0 port (for connection of a PC) and a Micro-HDMI port for high definition video output to a television. Many of the other 7 inch tablets lack these external connectivity options.  All-In-All, for the home based computer user, the Kindle Fire HD is a tablet to consider.

Use Amazon’s Full Store Directory For The Twelve Days of Christmas

AmazonWe are now in the midst of the 12 Days of Christmas and if you are like me, I have a tendency to procrastinate and/or I am at a total loss when it comes to gifting.  An option that I use when it gets’ close to Christmas is Amazon.com, which is one of the largest online retailers. Being the geekster that I am, I am a regular visitor to their computer and electronics section to see what is new and to wish for my next purchase.  I especially like, that due to their size, you get numerous reviews on products from customers.

As a result of the size of Amazon, it is often difficult to get to the place you want to be. What many people do not know is that Amazon has a main store directory [ CLICK HERE ] that is a great launching point.
