A GREAT Site For Parents Of Teenagers — and MORE GREAT GEEK SQUEAK STUFF (#2016-011)

March 14, 2016

A GREAT Site For Parents Of Teenagers – I am going to start this off by saying, teenagers are masters of deception. With each generation of teenagers, comes with it a whole new set of complexities. This is nothing new; however, with the advent of the internet where there are numerous avenues of instant communication (through social media and texting), a “good teen” can end up being enticed to make bad choices that can ultimately impact their future. As a parent, when we discover there is something wrong (and we are deceived) we start reaching out for information and solutions; often going to the internet as a resource. This in itself ends up being quite stressful and confusing.

P.U.R.E.

If you are a parent of a teen (or a soon to be teen), I found a great resource called P.U.R.E (Parents Universal Resource Experts), that you definitely need to visit; AND, if you are not a parent of a teen I encourage you to visit the site to get a feel for the complexities that our young people are being exposed to. For example, I started looking for resources at P.U.R.E that were related to the internet and computers and here is a “small” sampling of what I found:

To be honest, I am glad I am not a parent of a teenager in today’s world. If I were, I would be checking this site out to educate myself in an effort to help prevent my “good teen” from making bad decisions. Part of it is learning just exactly what is going on in their world.

Parent’s Universal Resource Experts, Inc. (P.U.R.E.™) was founded in 2001 by author and parent advocate, Sue Scheff. Since that time, P.U.R.E.™ has provided over 50,000 families with valuable information and resources for their at risk children and teens. These are teens who are struggling with peer pressure, experimenting with drugs and alcohol, and are simply good kids starting to make bad choices.

NEW Outline Tool In Google Docs – This past week Google Apps announced the launch of an “Outline Tool” that will be very helpful when navigating complex documents with many pages. The tool is displayed in a pane on the left side of the page, which will allow you to quickly jump to a page, via headers. I have tried this with a lengthy training manual I had put together and it is awesome.

Hmmm… With this added feature and Google’s strong search capabilities, I can see me possibly setting up a notebook (like Evernote and OneNote). Will have to play around with this more. To read more about this NEW feature — CLICK HERE

Difference Between Portable And Installer Software – You will often see here on the blog where I write about various software programs or apps. As a matter of fact, if you go to the Downloads page you will find a good sampling of FREE software that includes Portable Apps and Installer Software. If you often wondered what difference is between portable software and installer software, I encourage you to visit the The Windows Club to read their recent posting “Difference between Portable and Installer edition software“.

A Mid-Range Inexpensive Smartphone By ASUS

July 7, 2015

ASUS has become a well known product name for desktop computers; BUT, did you know that they make an Android Smartphone that is probably one of the best mid-range inexpensive phones out there. It is called the ASUS ZenFone

ASUS ZenFone 2

Based on the excellent customer reviews at Amazon, this phone is a hit. I am sure the price point on this phone is a main factor; especially, when you start comparing this phone with some of the other more expensive phones (such as the Samsung S6 or Apple’s iPhones). This phone comes unlocked and is compatible with the GSM Networks including AT&T, T-Mobile and cellular network providers utilizing GSM network such as: Straight Talk, Walmart Family Mobile, MetroPCS, Simple Mobile, Brightspot, Net10, h20 Wireless, and Cricket Wireless. I encourage you take a look at the reviews and I think you will agree this phone is a phone to consider. From what I have read the processing power is right up there, but the camera is not up to what maybe the Samsung S6 is…

The ASUS ZenPhone is definitely a phone to consider purchasing straight out to reduce your monthly cell bill where most people are paying for their phone a bit at a time each month.

Features At A Glance:

  • Unlocked, No Carrier Contract required. 4G/LTE Ready
  • Android 5.0 – Lollipop
  • 5.5″, FullHD 1920×1080 IPS
  • Available in 2GB or 4GB RAM
  • Dual SIM slots, Dual Active phone lines

TECH DEAL – I Believe I Got A Good Deal On This ASUS Desktop Computer

November 25, 2014

After nearly 8 years I decided it was time to changeout my HP computer… After a great deal of research and shopping around I ended up settling for the ASUS M51BC-US018S Desktop (3.3 GHz AMD FX-8300 Processor, 8GB DDR3, 1TB HDD, Windows 8.1) at Amazon. Pricing on this computer at the time and date of this posting was listed as $519.00 with a $60 ASUS rebate = $459.00…

ASUS makes a really nice computer and this box is no exception. I am very pleased with not only the build; but also with the performance. What sold me on this PC is the AMD -FX8300 processor which is rated equivalent to an Intel i7 processor; that the memory can be upgraded up to 32GBs; and, there is 10 USB Ports (6-USB 2.0 and 4-USB 3.0). There is room for expansion in this PC; however, when I broke open the case to insert my Hauppauge WinTV card I found that insertion of the card to be tight due to the installed video card consuming a lot of the space. I did manage to get it installed and due to the power of this computer, watching TV on this computer is a much better experience than my older PC with better clarity and video performance.

There was one issue I ran into with the purchase with this computer. Amazon had it posted to indicate that there are two $30 rebates (from ASUS).  After processing the rebates I discovered that ASUS would only honor one rebate and apparently the two posted on Amazon are the same rebate. In the end, all was good…  I contacted Amazon, reported the issue, and they immediately credited me for the additional $30. I checked today when I posted this article and they are still showing the $60 rebate. So, if you want to chance it and buy this computer; you too may be able to take advantage of the $60 return on the purchase.

If interested in this PC, which is a relatively new posting at Amazon, with myself making the first customer review, reflected below is the specs, in much more detail than what is posted at Amazon:

Shut Down Windows 8 With Shutdown8

June 11, 2014

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] Shut Down Windows 8 With Shutdown8 – After the release of Windows 8.1 Update, Microsoft did make things better for people to navigate around; however, shutting down the PC is still a hidden component (when you are on the desktop side of Windows 8).

To remedy this issue on my Windows 8 computer, I installed a little program called Shutdown8.

Shutdown8

Shutdown8 is available as an install file or a portable app. I went for the portable app version. Once you get it installed, pin the Shutdown8 executable file to your taskbar making it very handy to shutdown your PC.

Not only does Shutdown8 provide convenience in shutting down your PC, it also has the following features:

  • Shuts down/powers off computers at a specified time
  • Users can set the timer with the [+][-] keys or the mouse wheel button
  • Hibernate Mode: Saves the contents from the RAM to a hard disk and shuts down
  • Sleep Mode: Saves the state of the computer to RAM and enters a low-power mode
  • Works well with Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8

GEEK SQUEAKS – Preorder The ASUS Chromebox – AND MORE

March 13, 2014

How would you like a computer that starts up in seconds, has integrated malware and virus protection, is low maintenance, takes up very little space, is perfect for mom and pop, can be easily used as your home entertainment system, is inexpensive, and MORE???????

This may sound like the perfect computer and maybe it is. In the very near future ASUS will be releasing the ASUS Chromebox that will meet the specs, as described above. This is not a Windows based computer. It is a Google Chrome OS based computer that just may be a game changer.

ASUS Chromebox

Features-at-a-Glance

  • 4th gen Intel processors deliver the best performance for Chrome OS
  • HDMI and DisplayPort for dual display support and up to 4k playback1
  • Lightweight, small form design that supports VESA mount

  • Dual-band Wireless-N connectivity for streaming HD media and seamless web surfing
  • Instant boot up in seconds saves you time

If you think about it, most of our computing experience these days is online (in the cloud, as they say). The days of computers, as we know it, may be coming to an end; especially as these cloud based devices continue to evolve. I ask myself; especially, being a computer user for over 25 years, would I be satisfied with something like the ASUS Chromebox as my only computing source? I really don’t know at this point, but my geek instincts is telling me that this just may be the perfect computer setup.

The ASUS Chromebox can be pre-ordered [HERE]…  From what I am gathering, pricing will be around $180…
