Here Is A GREAT “How To” On Posting From Google Docs To WordPress

I just posted (yesterday) about the Google Docs to WordPress.com add-on that allows you to draft a blog article using Google Docs and then send the draft of that article to your WordPress account for final review and publishing. Already today, I noticed that I Love Free Software drafted an excellent step-by-step instruction on “how to” post from Google Docs to WordPress (see source link below).

Learn how to post from Google Docs to WordPress. There is WordPress plugin that lets you export an article from Google Docs To the Draft Folder of your site.

New “What’s On My PC” Domain Name – whatsonmypc.blog

I have been maintaining the blog since July of 2008 and have been able to maintain a steady flow of site views and visitors. Today, I made two changes to the blog. One, I changed the header; AND Two, I acquired a primary domain name for the site (whatsonmypc.blog) through WordPress. You can still get to the site through the WordPress domain address.

WordPress has a package setup to manage the process for acquiring the domain name; and, included in the package is additional blog file space, email and live chat support and the removal of advertising. The removal of the advertising will give the site a cleaner look with less distraction. WordPress, to this point, has never let me down…

Maintaining the site has become a real pleasure to maintain and has actually ended up being a hobby that I hope to continue to fulfill for many years to come. It is my way of satisfying my passion for computer information technology. Thank you to all my readers and hope you continue to visit and support the site.

You Can Now Use Google Docs As A WordPress.com Editor

With the new Google Docs add-on you can now compose a WordPress blog article in Google Docs and send a draft directly to WordPress.com (or a Jetpack powered WordPress.org site). I am always looking for ways to post my blog articles and this add-on appears to make good use of Google Docs and its’ formatting options.

Bookmarks4Techs.com Continues To Evolve

Most of you are probably not aware that I maintain a second tech site, called Bookmarks4Techs, that has grown into a tech info site that is great for anyone from the seasoned tech specialist to the home based computer user. I have been primarily using the site as a testing ground; however, I have now reached a point where I have a method to my madness (as they say). In essence, I am sanding out the rough edges.

Bookmarks4Techs.com

What this site is evolving into is an enormous launching point for technology news, tech products, software, android apps, wallpapers, tech sites, etc… I use various resources on the internet (with credit always given) to quickly get this information to you. It is like a big grab bag of tech information and links that is conveniently available in one place. It is like looking for Easter Eggs.

When you first arrive to the site, make sure you scroll down and checkout the sidebars. The sidebars are loaded with RSS feeds that are constantly updated with information from some of the most popular tech blogs and sites on the internet.

I invite you to drop by frequently, due that I often get into a rapid posting mode where I’ll make 2-3-4 posts at a time. You can also subscribe to the site via a RSS feed [ HERE ] OR via Email [ HERE ] to keep up with the pace.

If you are a blogger or tech website owner, and you add Bookmarks4Techs to your blogroll, I will routinely feature (in rotation) your tech site at Bookmarks4Techs (as a Featured Tech Site – click here for example) and will post your site on the Bookmarks4Techs Links page (in big letters).  This will help the site grow in popularity and at the same time give your site exposure.

What Bookmarks4Techs has to offer is this:

Bookmarks4Techs Links – Features over 500 links to various tech and software sites on the internet. This (idea) page is actually the page that ignited the development of the rest of the site. If you are into tech, then no need to bookmark tech sites; I’ve done the work for you…

Bookmark This Collection
– If you like software, then this is your page. This page features software that I personally use (or have used) and highly recommend.  The best part is that it is all FREE!.

Bookmarks4Techs StoreFront –  To maintain operation of the site I serve as an Amazon Affiliate. This page features computer and technology related links to products at Amazon.com. If you are a customer of Amazon, launch to the Amazon site from any link at Bookmarks4Techs. When you do, It throws a few pennies in my cup to keep the site going.  Also, on the sites’ left sidebar you will find a listing of tech product categories broken down for your convenience.

Today’s Technology News – Using various resources on the internet, I started posting the latest tech news. This page was actually done as a personal convenience (to keep me on top of things); however, I think you will find it quite newsworthy for you, as well.

Featured Software – This is the one I like and enjoy.  Again, using various reputable resources, I pull down updates and the latest in software (mostly all FREE).

Android Apps – If you own an Android device (such as a smartphone or tablet), then this is for you.  This is relatively new and I ask for patience as I find resources for this; however, I do have a good run going on this now (especially the Amazon Daily Free “Paid” App).

Featured Wallpapers – If you like wallpaper backgrounds, make sure you hit this frequently.

Thank You !

Bookmarks4Techs is Experiencing a Growth Spurt

This is an update of sorts on my sister site Bookmarks4Techs. I think I found the niche for the site as the number of daily page views has grown by leaps and bounds. The site features numerous sidebar RSS feeds from some of the top tech sites out there, links to every tech site that I can get my hands on, and links to tech products (and deals) that I find at Amazon. One hot draw to the site is the Hot Tech Site of the Day where I feature a Tech Site each day with links to articles hosted by the selected site. Bookmarks4Techs is coming into its’ own and is relatively new since I recently made changes; however, don’t be shyed away.  There is some really great content there for everyone and a great way to learn about computers and information technology.

Performed Some Site Maintenance – Blogroll Updated

After receiving some prompting and prodding I have cleaned up the blogroll somewhat so that the experience is more useful.  Any site that was on the blogroll that had not posted any articles within the past year have been taken off of the blogroll and archived (just in case they become active again).

To my readers out there, if you do not know what a blogroll is; it is a list of other blogs that a blogger (such as myself) might recommend by providing links to them (usually in a sidebar list).  You will find the blogroll here at What’s On My PC on the right side of the blog.

The blogs on my blogroll, which I am most proud to be associated with, are the following.  Take a few moments and hit these blogs. If you visit a site, leave them a comment that Rick from What’s On My PC  sent you. I promise you; you will not regret it.

What’s On My PC – 2010 in Review

The stats helper monkeys at WordPress.com mulled over how this blog did in 2010, and here’s a high level summary of its overall blog health:

Healthy blog!

The Blog-Health-o-Meter™ reads Wow.

Crunchy numbers

Featured imageThe Louvre Museum has 8.5 million visitors per year. This blog was viewed about 280,000 times in 2010. If it were an exhibit at The Louvre Museum, it would take 12 days for that many people to see it.

In 2010, there were 343 new posts, growing the total archive of this blog to 821 posts. There were 795 pictures uploaded, taking up a total of 66mb. That’s about 2 pictures per day.

The busiest month of the year was August  with 30,207 views. The most popular post that month was Locating Your Software License Keys.

Where did they come from?

The top referring sites in 2010 were Stumbleupon, Google Reader, Bill Mullin’s Weblog – Tech ThoughtsTech-for Everyone and  Google.com.

Some visitors came searching, mostly for vista will not boot, firefox incognito, vista service pack 2 problems, windows vista service pack 2 problems, and old record player.

Learn to Blog with Windows Live Writer 2011

If you are a blogger, it is important to have  installed a good client software platform to draft your blog articles so that the articles really stand out and look professional. The online editors provided by the blogging services such as  WordPress, Blogger, TypePad and LiveJournal are OK (in a pinch); however, they are no match when it comes to using blogging software that you install on your PC. In my humble opinion, the top dog out there in this category is Windows Live Writer (FREE from Microsoft). As a matter of fact, if my memory serves me, TechPaul at Tech-for Everyone put me onto Windows Live Writer, early on, when I became active in the blogging circuit. To put it simply, I would not blog without it.

Windows Live Writer

Most recently Microsoft released a more refined (and much improved) version of Windows Live Writer called Windows Live Writer 2011 which looks very similar to something you would see in the newer versions of Microsoft Office (ribbon toolbar interface and all).  In a nutshell Windows Live Writer 2011 is a full scale editor designed specifically for bloggers.

Ribbion Interface

To use Windows Live Writer, assuming you already have an account setup with one of the blogging services and your blog template is already setup online, you simply start by running the Windows Live Writer software. The first time you run it you will be prompted to add your blog account information such as username and password. After you have accomplished that small task, Windows Live Writer will automatically log into your online account and will identify and subsequently setup the editor to match your online web page template.

The whole purpose of Windows Live Writer 2011 is to give you the ability to draft your articles on your computer, then the ability to upload the drafts to your online account. There is so much more that you can do with Windows Live Writer compared to the online editors.  If you are a serious blogger, and want to make blogging a joyful experience, then this is one application that you must have.

New Additions to the What’s On My PC Blogroll

Just completed some link exchanges and would like to introduce the following blogs that have been added to the What’s On My PC blogroll and Launch Pad.

image I Want Ice Water – If you need a good laugh for the day, check this blog out.  It is not a tech blog; however, I decided here at What’s On My PC, we need to mix it up a little with a pinch of humor. The author of the blog is definitely someone like me. “They ain’t hitting on all cylinders!’”.  Great blog that you need to check out.

I Want Ice Water – Is a mixture of humor & seriousness that reflects my own personal philosophy of life. From growing up a poor, mixed-race kid in the 50s, 60s & 70s, to living as a depressed urban hermit in recovery, this is a collection of my pleas for reason & rationality in this global asylum. The Only Thing I’m Certain Of Is: I Don’t Know Everything!

All Of My Opinions Are Subject To Change As New Facts Come In.

Your Comments Will Always Be Welcomed.

Laptop Computer Reviews Laptop Computer Reviews – from Real Users – If you are in the market for a laptop or notebook computer, this blog is a nice place to start your research. Numerous reviews are provided for a variety of models. Appears the blog is in the initial stages of development, with software reviews in their future.  Will only get better!

Turn Your Blog Into a PDF Book

Steve over at TTC Shelbyville has outdone himself on telling us how and where you can “Make Your WordPress Blog Into a Book”.  What Steve is referring to is the web based (online) FREE service called BlogBooker.

image

What is this ?

BlogBooker produces a high-quality PDF Blog Book from all your blog’s entries and comments. Archives can be generated from any blog running on WordPress, LiveJournal (and derivatives) or Blogger.

The really cool factor with BlogBooker is that it will literally take every article you ever posted on your blog and compile it into a readable PDF book with a table of contents, chapters and all (all hot linked together).  During my testing and by following the simple instructions from the TTC Shelbyville article [ HERE ] I was able to take nearly 2 years worth of my writing and archive it into my own personal eBook. The compilation process, using an XML file that I easily generated at my WordPress Dashboard, took approximately 5 minutes.  End result was a 1373 page PDF book (29 MB) with every article (and comment) ever posted on What’s On My PC…  If you are a blogger and you use WordPress, LiveJournal or Blogger as your blogging service, then this is a great way to compile and have a searchable record of all your postings.

I tip my hat to Steve at the TTC Shelbyville Technical Blog for this great find!

Got My Blogger Batteries Recharged

My friend TechPaul, at Tech-for Everyone, recently responded to a comment on his blog explaining how blogging is hard work,  how Thank You’s are far and few between; BUT, when recognition does occur (especially from a peer) it really charges up his blogger batteries. I couldn’t agree with him more.

image

Recently, by pure chance, I came across the web site My Life Scoop which is a site devoted to useful stories on Family Life (including parenting, holidays, education, and cooking), Personal Life (including career and health), and Tech Life (including travel, music and videos).”

image

What jumped out at me at this site was that they had my blog (What’s On My PC) and TechPaul’s (Tech-for Everyone) listed as one of their Top 10 Tech Advice Blogs [click here] alongside some of the big guns that are out there.  What was rewarding about this was that I was included with one of my mentors (Tech Paul).  I actually got into blogging from the encouragement of Tech Paul (at Tech-for Everyone) and from the encouragement of Bill Mullins’ (at Tech Thoughts). To this day I look up to these guys and when something good happens the real reward is paying them back with words of sincere thanks that recharges my blogger batteries and hopefully gives them a charge to their blogger batteries, as well.

image

I just wanted to publicly recognize and say Thank You to My Life Scoop for this recognition; AND, most importantly for recharging my blogger batteries.  I really needed that…

Tech-for Everyone, and I mean Everyone

One of my favorite blogging past times is writing about authors and creators of other blogs. I have been at this almost a year and have established some great connections with other people who maintain blogs and who take what they write about seriously. One of those blogs where the “connectivity” between their blog and mine just sort of happened, or was fate, has been “Tech-for Everyone” .

Tech-for Everyone

TechPaul, the author of “Tech-for Everyone” is a Computer Tech, by profession [ CLICK HERE ] , that has the uncanny ability to reach plain folks like us when it comes to computers, software, technology, etc…  To me this is a real attribute to becoming great computer tech.

If you have a real interest in computers and information technology; AND, you do not have “Tech-for Everyone” bookmarked in your browser, then you are missing out on a real gem.  There is something there for “Everyone” that can be understood by “Anyone”…

I do not know how many articles TechPaul has rolled out, but here is a sampling of articles to get you started with his blog.

Bill has the ability to convey information to his readers in such a way that all levels of computer users walk away learning something. If you are new (or old) to computers, Bill Mullins’ Weblog – Tech Thoughts is a good starting point to learn about  computers, technology, software and protecting yourself on the internet.
