Your Passwords Must Have Length and Complexity

What you know about password security is probably wrong, is the title of an article I came across at FierceCIO:TechWatch. It really caught my eye and I think it is important that I pass the most important part of this article on to you:

Passwords that are longer than eight characters are a must, and they should also involve a good mix of upper case characters, numbers and symbols. In addition, a level of randomness is required too, which automatically precludes any word or combination of words found in the dictionary – FierceCIO:TechWatch.

There are so many people that I know who use very simple passwords and do not ever change them. It is a hard sell to get them to change there way of thinking and to change their passwords. If anything, please use the advice given above for those accounts that are super important to you! If you don’t, you are postured for potential compromise of the account.

The Start Menu Will Be Back In Windows 8.1. Is This An Upgrade or a Downgrade?

One thing that I have learned over the years is to try and look at Computer Information Technology through the eyes of the end user, which is YOU!. When Microsoft released Windows 8, which by the way is an excellent operating system, they forgot to look at it through the eyes of the end user, which is YOU! For me, it was another toy to play with and I made myself understand it (because that is what I do); but, 99 percent of the people who use computers are not like me.  99 percent of these people were finally getting somewhat in the groove of learning and navigating Windows and then Microsoft dropped the Windows 8 bombshell that really threw people off. I daily hear the complaints about the Start Menu being missing and that you have to jump through a hoop to get to the desktop.

I do have some good news about Windows 8.  In the very near future you are going to see an upgrade to Windows 8 (which will be FREE), called Windows 8.1, that in a sense is actually a downgrade.

Windows 8.1 Start Menu

You need to jump over to Paul Thurott’s Supersite for Windows to read about the changes that are going to occur when the Windows 8 downgrade or I mean upgrade occurs.  The biggest change is that Microsoft is giving in and is going to return the Start Menu and will give you the option of booting to the desktop instead of the Metro Start Screen. They are also planning some other neat changes…

Bing vs. Google – Bing It On

Back in May of 2009 I posted an article titled, “bing – Microsoft’s New Search Engine”. My intent of the article was to let people know that Microsoft had created their own version of a search engine that would be a main competitor to Google and Yahoo. I was actually impressed with Bing (back then) and I still am today; HOWEVER, following that article I received over 100 comments asking me (as if I was the creator of Bing) to remove Bing from their computers. Apparently Microsoft, as part of their marketing strategy of Bing (in a viral type of way), was making Bing show up on people’s computers in various ways and then making it difficult for people to then remove Bing from their computers. To me, not a very good way for people to develop a warm and fuzzy feeling for something.

I think Microsoft learned from that strategy and has been trying to get people to use Bing by sensationalizing it through various media sources (such as through TV commercials).  Today I happened across another attempt by Microsoft to bring Bing home and to draw attention to the power (and beauty) of the Bing Search engine.

image

Go to, BING IT ON, where you can do a side-by-side search analysis of the Bing Search Engine and the Google Search Engine. The site is sort of competitive in nature and gives you the opportunity to perform searches, then rate the outcome, as to which performed better. If anything, this is a nice source to perform a more extensive search using two very powerful search engines.

Make Your Own Ringtones For Your iPhone (or Any Mobile Phone)

I recently had a friend who was looking for a method to create a personalized ringtone for their iPhone. What I found, that is quite easy to use, is an online application called Online Audio Cutter.

Online Audio Cutter

Online Audio Cutter is specifically geared toward cutting out sound segments from just about any audio or video format that you throw at it (see supported formats). The best part is that there is nothing to install. Simply visit the site, click on the Open File button (to select a file from your computer), select the interval you want to cut by moving the blue sliders, choose a format you wish to save a file in (the default format is MP3), click the Cut button, then click Download to save your computer.

During this process you will find that there is even a fade-in and fade-out function that will start your clipped file from silence and gradually make it louder; AND, also during this process when selecting the desired format, you will see an option specifically for the iPhone ringtone format.

Below you will find links on creating a ringtone (for your iPhone), transferring the file to your iPhone and even instructions on how to change the iPhone ringtone

In closing, one thing to point out here is that Online Audio Cutter can also be used to create ringtones for any mobile phone (not just the iPhone).

Using Firefox to Access System Commands And Other Programs In Your Computer

Recently I posted an article about Pale Moon, which is a spin-off of Firefox. Since Pale Moon is technically Firefox in disguise, that has been optimized to run faster, I have been playing around with some of the Firefox add-ons and extensions, that run just as well with Pale Moon. I especially like the portable version of Pale Moon and encourage you to give it a try. I really love it and can attest it is the best browser out there that has been optimized to run from a flash drive.  I also have the portable version of Pale Moon installed on my computer and I find myself using it more and more.

A Firefox (or Pale Moon) add-on that especially caught my attention, that recently was released by Mozilla Online, is called Easy Access. This add-on is special in that it gives you the ability to access and launch the system commands and other programs in your computer from the status bar that is located at the bottom of the browser window.

For example, using the screenshot below, you will see a grouping of icons (programs) that I added using Easy Access, which allows me to launch these programs from my browser window.

Easy Access

By default, Easy Access installs with a some commonly used programs (such as Notepad, Paint, Calculator, and My Computer). It is very easy to add additional programs to this listing by by clicking on the Easy Access icon and clicking on Manage Your Own Easy Access.

Hide Your Serial Numbers, Passwords, Phone Numbers and Everyday Notes In A Safe Place

A program that I use on a regular basis to protect and hide my personal text based notes is called Steganos LockNote.  In a sense it is like notepad with an encryption option.

Secure, yet simple
Just double-click a LockNote and enter your password to access your text files as usual.

No installation required
Move LockNotes wherever you want, as often as you want. A LockNote document does not require much more hard drive space than an unencrypted document.

Simply drag and drop existing text files on a LockNote window: they will be encrypted automatically.

Open and free
LockNote is open source and is based upon open source technologies, e.g. the certified CryptoPP program library for strong encryption.

Using Google Search As A Calculator

There are many instances what I write about here on the blog is from personal experience. Today, at my retirement job, we had to complete a purchase order in quick fashion and I needed to perform some math calculations to determine costs. Instead of pulling out a calculator I pulled up the Google Search box and started typing in the calculations (in plain English).  Once I entered what I needed to be calculated, Google performed the calculation for me and also sent me to an online calculator in the event I needed to perform additional calculations.

Google Search Calculations

I also found that you can perform math calculations using Microsoft’s search engine, called Bing, as well; however, minus the online calculator.

Use Wikipedia’s Book Creator To Compile Multiple Articles Into A PDF File

Did you know that buried on the left side column of any Wikipedia article, under the Print/Export selection there is a selection for Create A Book?

Wikipedia

What this is handy for is compiling multiple articles together into a PDF file. There are several other eBook formats available, as well.  Also, if you prefer to not create a book you can download specific Wikipedia pages and articles as a PDF file. I know many folks, especially students, when doing research using Wikipedia, end up printing the page in its’ native html format when they could be saving the information electronically.

Create A Desktop Shortcut To Your Windows 8 Apps and Software

What many of you do not know is that I often use the blog to document tips, that I come across, for my own future reference. Today’s post is a good example of this. Recently I discovered that I can create a Windows 8 desktop shortcut that will launch the Windows 8 GUI (graphical user interface) menu for all of the apps and software that I have installed on my computer.

As you well know, if you are a Windows 8 user, there is no Start Menu. This shortcut, in essence, will go to serve the same purpose of the Start Menu; however, in appearance it does not look like the Start Menu you have been accustomed to. The good about this is, that once you click the shortcut and you get to the apps screen, you can simply start typing to search for the app or software program you are looking for. For example, let’s say I want to launch the calculator that is built into windows. I simply click on the shortcut that will launch the Windows 8 GUI menu or apps screen, then start typing calculator and very quickly the tile to launch the calculator will appear.

To create this desktop shortcut, here is what you have to do:

Right click on desktop and click New -> Shortcut

A dialog box will appear prompting for a location of the item.  Copy and Paste the following into the dialog box, then click Next:

%windir%\explorer.exe shell:::{2559a1f8-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}

App Menu Shortcut

After you click on Next, another dialog box will launch prompting you to give the shortcut a name. In this case, I named the shortcut Windows 8 Apps.  After you enter the name for the shortcut, click on Finish.

App Menu Shortcut

Click on your newly created shortcut, to launch the Windows 8 Apps Screen (menu)…

App Menu Shortcut

What I am finding, by using this shortcut technique, I am using the Windows 8 GUI menu (or apps screen) on a regular basis.

A FREE and EASY Offline Browser Utility That I Use To Backup My Web Sites

I currently maintain two public sites and one private site using WordPress.com, Weebly.com and Blogger.com. Each of these services provide a back door option to backup a web site; however, these backup options (with the exception of Weebly) are somewhat proprietary and difficult to follow.

My primary concern with using these FREE services is that you are at the mercy of the provider and could be at risk of waking up one morning to find you are locked out of your site. To help keep my sanity, due to the amount of content I do have posted (on all three sites), I use a FREE utility called HTTrack Website Copier.

HTTrack

HTTrack Website Copier allows you to download a World Wide Web site from the Internet to a local directory, building recursively all directories, getting HTML, images, and other files from the server to your computer. HTTrack arranges the original site’s relative link-structure. Simply open a page of the “mirrored” website in your browser, and you can browse the site from link to link, as if you were viewing it online. HTTrack can also update an existing mirrored site, and resume interrupted downloads. HTTrack is fully configurable, and has an integrated help system.

HTTrack Website Copier may appear to be non-user friendly, when in fact it is actually pretty easy to use. You can get a quick step-by-step rundown on using it [HERE]What I primarily use HTTrack for is to copy the main content of my sites in the event I need to move elsewhere.

Jot Down Your Notes With the NEW Google Keep

Yesterday I came across something that is NEW with Google called Google Keep that just may end up rivaling the likes of Evernote and SpringPad.

Google Keep is a NEW online note keeping service that works in connection with your Google Drive. If you have a Google account, such as Gmail, then your account will give you access to the other Google services such as Google Drive; and now, Google Keep. Google Keep is web based, so you can access it from any internet enabled computer  or device (click here for an example) or you can install the Android version of Google Keep to your Android based phone or tablet (click here for more on this).

From what I am seeing right now, Google Keep is in the very early stages and actually I am not seeing where it is connecting to my Google Drive (yet).  The actual notes are very basic (right now) with no rich text formatting; however, you can add images.

Will this be a competitor to Evernote and Springpad?  Time will only tell whether more features will be added, etc… in order to bring Google Keep up to the speed with Evernote or Springpad. I just thought it to be interesting, that Google is making a service such as this, available.

The biggest concern I have is that Google comes up with these great ideas, then couple years down the road decides to kill them (i.e. Google Notebook, iGoogle, and Google Reader). Personally, I thought Google Notebook was ahead of its’ time and was an excellent service.

You can read more about Google Keep on Google’s Official Blog [HERE].

How To Save and Print A List of Installed Programs On Your Computer

I recently experienced a situation where a person’s computer, that was several years old, required a complete factory restore. When asked, “What programs did they have installed on the computer?”, the person was at a loss. Following this occurrence, I started to wonder if there was an easy way to view, save or print the programs that we have installed on our computers? This would be especially handy as a reference in the event of a computer crash. I know myself, there are many software packages I have installed; and, trying to remember what programs I installed (in the event of a computer failure) would be a real challenge, even for an ole’ geek like me.

I am sure there may be other options or methods to accomplish this task, but what I came across was a small software utility, that is portable, called MyUninstaller (by NirSoft). I know you are wondering, what does an uninstaller utility have to do with what we want to accomplish?

MyUninstaller

First, let me explain that MyUninstaller is in fact an alternative uninstaller utility to the standard Add/Remove applet of Windows operating system; HOWEVER, built into MyUninstaller is a menu options that gives you the ability to either save the list of all installed applications on your computer into a text file or HTML file (that can be viewed in your web browser).

To save the list to a text file, click on the File Menu and select Save Selected Items. To save and view the list as a HTML file, click on View and select HTML Report – All Items.

After using the options in MyUninstaller to generate a list of the programs on my computer, it has now become part of my overall backup strategy.

Stardock is currently working on a Windows 8 application called ModernMix, that is a must have application for Windows 8. ModernMix is in Beta; however, it has been released for public use.

We all know that Windows 8 has been challenge for most users due to the interface change. We have been trained, by Microsoft, for over 20 years; to open, close and minimize applications via the windows controls in the top right corner of a window. When you boot to the Windows 8 Start Screen, which is host to and the launching point for Windows Apps, your first instinct is to try and close an app by looking for those controls; only to find out that they do not exist. ModernMix changes all of that.

After you install ModernMix you will notice that any App you open there is now a set of controls. These controls, located in the top right corner of the app you have open, allows you to toggle the app into a Windows mode, toggle the app back to the Start Screen Mode, or close the app. When you are at the desktop level and you have a Windows App open you can open, close and minimize the window (containing the app) just as you always have.  Another cool feature is that you can pin the app to the Windows taskbar.

ModernMix

Once the app is open in a Window it will act as it normally does.  For example, using the screenshot above.  I opened a news app on the Windows 8 Start Screen, toggled the control to the Windows mode (which took me to the desktop) and was able to scroll horizontally through the news articles.

ModernMix is currently $4.99, and typically I only promote FREE software; however, this is one exception. ModernMix is the missing link to Windows 8 and I highly recommend it. Stardock has once again pushed the envelope and came up with a very useful software application that will make your Windows 8 experience a good experience.

Wallpaper of the Week (#110)–A Flapping Gosling

This wallpaper was one of National Geographics Top Shots wallpapers. The photographer, Lisa Franceski, describes it as this:

Ever mindful not to disturb baby birds, Franceski crawled through goose poop to photograph this flapping gosling at a pond on Long Island, New York. “I couldn’t stop laughing,” says the registered nurse, 48. “It looked like a football referee calling, Touchdown!”

Avoid Retyping A Document With Online OCR

I recently was faced with situation where I had a hardcopy of a typed document where there was no editable or electronic version available and I needed a way to access and edit the document without completely retyping it.

It was at this point I started to think in terms of OCR (optical character recognition). OCR is software that has the ability to take typewritten (and sometimes handwritten) text and convert it to a digital version that can be electronically stored and edited. In my case, I did not want to install software on the computer, and started to think even further outside the box. I wondered, are there any online OCR services on the internet?

As I have said before, “if you can think of it, someone has done it”…  There are quite a few OCR services out there that I tried and the one I am settling with is called Online OCR… Online OCR is a free service in a “Guest mode” (without registration) that allows you to convert 15 images per hour.

Online OCR

I was able to take the hardcopy of the document, scan it to a PDF file, upload the PDF file to Online OCR where the text in the file was read and subsequently converted to an editable Microsoft Word document. What sold me on Online OCR was that Online OCR managed to convert the document and retain the formatting (fonts, table, etc…) to near perfection.

Online OCR’s conversion process with recognize 32 languages and can handle up to 8 different input file formats and produce 6 different output formats:

INPUT FORMATS:

  • PDF (All types of PDF files including multi-page PDFs)
  • TIF/TIFF (Multipage TIFFs supported)
  • JPEG/JPG
  • BMP
  • PCX
  • PNG
  • GIF
  • ZIP files containing the above types of files can also be uploaded.

OUTPUT FORMATS:

    • Adobe PDF
    • MS Word 2003/XP
    • MS Excel 2003/XP
    • Html 4.0
    • RTF
    • Text Plain

Use PDFProtect to Password Protect Your PDF Files

A couple days back I featured an article titled, “Storing and Opening Password Protected PDF Files Online Using Google Drive and SkyDrive”, that explained how Google Drive and SkyDrive have the ability to open password protected PDF files. The problem is, you may not have the software or may be in a situation away from your computer where you cannot perform this task. This is where the online service called PDFProtect can help you.

PDFProtect

Simply visit PDFProtect, upload your PDF file, create a password to protect your PDF file, select the encryption strength and if your file contains personal or confidential information select secure connection. Once the file has been uploaded and the password protection has been added, you will be prompted to download the PDF file that is now password protected. PDFProtect allows a file size up to 50 MB…

Search And Listen To Thousands Of Online Radio Stations With RadioTuna

I can remember the day growing up where a transistor radio and listening to a local radio station was high tech. Wow, has things ever changed! There are so many music sources today and music player devices, it will make your head spin…

I still get into the mood to listen to music, with my genre being country or classical; especially, when I am working on my computer. I tune into a station using my personal favorite online radio application called RadioTuna. What is cool about RadioTuna is that it is very easy to use and you have two options play music.

RadioTuna

You can either visit the website, select the type of music you want to hear, select a station, and you are good to go; OR, you can download the RadioTuna Online Desktop Player (see screenshot below). I especially enjoy the desktop player, due I can set presets for the channels I desire to listen to.

RadioTuna Desktop Player

It is advisable to establish an account with RadioTuna so that you can save your favorites; however, an online account is not required.

A Free Software Utility To Edit The Windows 8 Quick Access (WinX) Menu

Recently I posted the article, A Must Learn Windows 8 Tip: How To Get To The Quick Access Menu And To The Windows 8 Start Menu. In summary, this menu appears when you place your mouse pointer in the bottom right corner of the screen and when the the Start Screen thumbnail (or tip) pops up, right mouse click on the thumbnail and the Quick Access menu will appear. This menu serves as a convenient and quick launching point to the advanced system functions on your computer. This menu is also known in the Windows 8 environment, as the WinX menu.  If you hit the Win key on your keyboard plus X (Win + X), this menu will appear.

WinX Menu

The WinX menu, I have found to be quite convenient and began thinking it would be a real plus if I could add my own items to the WinX menu. I began researching this and found that there is a folder on your computer called WinX which holds shortcuts, in groups, to the program items you see on the menu. At first, I thought I could add or remove the shortcuts and found that they are basically locked in place by the operating system; so, that option was ruled out.

I then started thinking that someone out there probably has developed software that will allow you to edit the WinX menu and sure enough I found a FREE software utility called Win+X Menu Editor for Windows 8.

Win+X Menu Editor for Windows 8

With Win+X Menu Editor for Windows 8 you can edit the WinX menu without system files modification. You can rename, move items, add programs, add presets, add control panel items, create additional groups and remove items.

Win+X Menu Editor for Windows 8

This little program is portable, works on a 32bit or 64 bit system, and is by the same developer of a program I featured in an article yesterday, called SimpleSndVol .

A Must Have Cleaner App For Android Users

404 Tech Support, a member of the What’s On My PC blogroll, posted an article CCleaner-like app for Android that caught my attention; BUT, the real attention grabber in the article was one of the apps he recommended, called Clean Master.

I downloaded Clean Master and installed it on my Android smartphone (Sony Xperia X10) and installed it on my Android Tablet (Toshiba Thrive). Clean Master is an approximately 1.8 mb install that is worth its’ weight in gold.

Clean Master

After using Android for quite some time now and after installing (and uninstalling) numerous apps, I often wondered just how much data pollution was occurring on these devices. The term data pollution is a term I made up to describe leftover files and hidden files that you, the user, is totally unaware of.  These files on an Android device can include history files, cache files, residual files and the app packages (.apk files) that Android uses to install apps.

What I soon discovered, after installing and running Clean Master, is that the accumulation of these files can easily run into hundreds of megabytes. On my phone, which is an older powerhouse Android phone (Sony Xperia X10), space is precious to me.  After running Clean Master, I regained 35 MB’s of space. On my tablet (Toshiba Thrive), which I call my Android workhorse, I was able to reclaim nearly a gigabyte of space. I found Clean Master to be safe and did not alter or effect the operation of either of these devices.

404 Tech Support was correct in comparing Clean Master to CCleaner, the popular computer optimization and cleaning tool. This is a must have cleaner app for Android Users…

Key Features

History Eraser
Clean cache Files
Clean unused files
Manage and clean app packages
Remind unused files when app installed
Kill running tasks/release RAM

A Home For ALL Of Your Favorite Websites, Links, Recipes, Images, Podcasts, Videos And MORE!

Ever hear of QuickLinkr? I never heard of QuickLinkr, until NOW…

QuickLinkr is a cloud based bookmarking service that gives you the ability to keep all of your bookmarks in one place, that is available from any device, any where, any time! QuickLinkr is currently in beta!

QuickLinkr

What separates QuickLinkr from many of the other bookmarking services is that once you add an URL (web site), QuickLinkr will capture and create a mini version of the bookmarked page (larger than a thumbnail) which creates a tiled type interface that is quite visually appealing.

I suggest you create an account with QuickLinkr so that you can customize your own Quickboard where you can create folders, make folders private or public, use a background image, view your bookmarked sites directly from QuickLinkr, etc… There are no ads, no social logins and no forced registration with QuickLinkr. A browser bookmarklet is also available that allows you to capture the URL of a site and send it directly to your QuickLinkr Quickboard.

Try Norton Power Eraser If You Think Your Antivirus May Be Missing Something

I know during all my years of operating a computer there has been those isolated occasions where I suspected something was not right with the performance of the computer, that it suddenly slowed down and that viral activity may be present.  To troubleshoot a problem such as this, I would perform a virus and malware scan of the computer to see if something was amiss.  Oftentimes, the scanners would come up clean; yet, I was still not satisfied and was left wondering, did my antivirus scanner(s) miss something?

In instances, such as I described, it is good to get a second opinion. Recently, I started exploring a FREE standalone rescue tool called Norton Power Eraser (by Symantec) that is specially designed to aggressively target scamware, rootkits and eliminate threats that traditional virus scanning doesn’t always detect.

Screenshot - Norton Power Eraser

This is very important…  Only use Power Eraser as a last resort. As described it is designed to aggressively identify any potential culprits on your computer. For example, when I performed a scan, Power Eraser identified a shortcut on my PC and a process on my PC as being BAD and prompted me to remove them. The two items Power Eraser picked up are third party software applications and are perfectly OK.  It also identified a gamut of unknown files (as potential suspect files).

Screenshot - Norton Power Eraser

This is not to mean that Power Eraser does not do its’ job. It is to the contrary, it is designed to aggressively identify any potential culprits on your PC.  In conclusion, I see Power Eraser as a really good troubleshooting tool in picking up suspect files and processes that your normal scanner may not pick up.  It is up to you (or get professional assistance) to determine if those files and processes are good or bad.  With Power Eraser (by default), a System Restore Point is created before a fix is implemented.

See the tutorial for using Norton Power Eraser [HERE] .

Tech Product of the Week: Kindle Fire HD 7 Inch Tablet Computer

Looking for a tablet computer reminds me of the day when desktops started to flourish and everyone wanted one. It is like shopping for a car and by the end of the day you are more confused than you were at the beginning of the day.

Here is my take on Tablet Computers…  For the home based computer user, buy a reasonably priced Android OS based tablet, such as the Kindle Fire HD (7 inch). I cannot see putting out large amounts of money for a tablet; especially, when the next latest and greatest is just around the corner. We are only seeing the beginning of this type of technology.

I recently got my hands on the Kindle Fire HD and was very impressed. With the Kindle Fire you are really getting a great tablet that features a high definition display, great sound (Dolby Audio), dual-antenna Wi-Fi, a massive selection of Android Apps and much, much more for under $200…  I especially liked that the Fire has a Micro USB 2.0 port (for connection of a PC) and a Micro-HDMI port for high definition video output to a television. Many of the other 7 inch tablets lack these external connectivity options.  All-In-All, for the home based computer user, the Kindle Fire HD is a tablet to consider.

Create An Archive Index Of Your WordPress.com Blog Posts

Recently I added an archive page to Bookmarks4Techs which is a listing of links (with titles) to every article I ever posted at What’s On My PC. When I came up with the idea I had to find a way to generate the list (which, at the time, was approximately 1450 articles) without expending a lot of work. I had some ideas up my sleeve; however, it goes back to an adage that I have; “If you can think of it, someone else has done it!”.

If you are using WordPress.com as your blogging platform, you will find that WordPress already has some shortcoding available that will allow to generate archive listings, in various types of formats. To generate the list that I needed, it was as simple as starting up the blogging editor in my account and inserting the shortcode [ archives ] in the editor, then clicking on Preview and voila’ there was a list of every article I ever posted in the order that they were posted. I simply then copied and pasted the listing into the Bookmarks4Techs archive page.

NOTE: In the example I used above, there are no spaces, between the brackets and the word archives. I had to place spaces between the brackets and the word archives to prevent WordPress from automatically generating the list of all my articles.

You can also insert additional archive shortcodes that will allow you to customize your lists.  See the examples provided below.  You can get more instruction and information on using these shortcodes [here] :

A PC Tech’s Quick Reference Web Site

Just when I think I have found most of the golden nuggets on the internet, I come across another. While performing an update to the Bookmarks4Techs listing, a visitor to the site contacted me and suggested that I add the tech site GEGeek – PC Tech Quick Reference to the listing.

GEGeek

What I expected to find was a tech blog, but what I came across is a Geek’s paradise for anyone who is into computers; and especially,  computer repair & troubleshooting. While you are there, pay special attention to the GEGeek Tech Toolkit.  This toolkit should be called a Tech Tool Shop…  It is a 1.0 gig download and contains everything, as a tech, you would ever need.

An excerpt about the author of GEGeek:

This site is the culmination of years of CAREFULLY selecting a handful of links to assist me on my current job, personal consulting work and of course my own PCs. Not every site has all useful links ⁄ articles, but there were always one or two gems to be found on every site I visited. Keeping them readily available and manageable became quite a chore, so i created this site just to help me organize them and provide a quick reference . The “How To” is assumed knowledge, I just provide the quick reference.

An Android App That Feels Like TV

There are various ways to stream video to your android phone or tablet; BUT, there is none that I found that is like 9×9.tv

9x9.tv

From what I can see, based on the reviews at the Google Play Store, 9×9.tv is a relative newcomer to the Android platform. If you are into watching video streamed from the internet, then you need to download this app. The selection is awesome and what is neat about 9×9.tv is that it will continuously play videos. I was especially amazed at how good it looked on my tablet and how smooth the videos played.

Eliminate On Screen Information Overload With The NEW CinemaDrape

I had the developer(s) of CinemaDrape contact me to let me know that a NEW version of CinemaDrape has been released. It is a new major release, with many important improvements and changes.

If you do not know what CinemaDrape is, let me explain:

CinemaDrape helps you focus on your current task on screen, by instantly blanking or dimming the other less important areas in a web page or in the background windows.

For example, let’s say you are working on an important document, that is requiring your complete attention and focus. With CinemaDrape you can block out the external areas on the screen, leaving only your document visible, for your full attention. In other words, it blocks out the external screen noise.

I personally use this application to block out the background areas on the screen when I am watching the TV on my computer or a movie. It really makes a difference, and actually makes it easier on the eyes, especially when watching a movie.

CinemaDrape is available as a full install program or as a portable app. I personally like the portable app, where you download and run.

Also, to get you going using this program, after you get it up and running:

Just remember to use the CTRL + F11 keys to toggle CinemaDrape on an off. When you have CinemaDrape active, click the right mouse button, long tap, or press Escape to open the main CinemaDrape menu (see below). The menu, tells it all…  Great job to the developer(s) of CinemaDrape.

Perform Much Smaller Mouse Movements or Touch Swipes To Close A Windows 8 App

Recently I posted an article, The Easy Way To Close A Windows 8 App, that explains how to close an app in Windows 8 by positioning the mouse pointer at the top of the app screen (where the pointer turns into a hand); then, dragging and dropping the app to the bottom of the screen.

On a desktop computer where the screen can be quite large and the travel distance (or threshold) to drag and drop the app (to close it) can be an exercise in itself. It was at this point I wondered if there was not a way to close the app quicker using less travel distance. Sure enough, using the analogy of “if you can think it, someone else has done it”, I came across a small portable utility called Close Threshold for Metro Apps.

Close Threshold for Metro Apps

By using Close Threshold for Metro Apps, if you set the sliders to the left, save the settings, you will find that you will not have to drag an app to the bottom of the screen. The travel distance to close an app is reduced dramatically resulting in a more efficient and faster method to close the app.

There is also an additional feature where you can completely disable the “drag and drop” method of closing an app all together.

With Close Threshold for Metro Apps you will able:

  • to speed up Metro apps closing with mouse
  • to speed up Metro apps closing with touch gestures
  • to disable Metro apps closing with mouse
  • to disable Metro apps closing with touch
