Google Chrome Extension: AddToAny – The Universal Way To Share Links

AddToAny is one of my most used Google Chrome browser extensions and actually has saved me from installing the extensions for other services (which saves memory) where I need to connect to and post links (or articles). AddToAny is similar to the sharing utility that you use on your smartphone.

What does AddToAny do?  AddToAny is a universal share button that makes it easy and fast to share links to anyone anywhere using Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Pinterest, Gmail, email, and many more sharing and social media services.

For example, if I want to send a link to a post to Facebook, I click on the AddToAny share button on the browser toolbar, select Facebook and it automatically connects to Facebook and initiates the post to Facebook.  AddToAny does the same for a multitude of other services, as well. You can select the services you desire to use and connect to by clicking on the “Options” selection on the AddToAny menu.

Features:

– AddToAny’s Universal Share Button & Smart Menu
– Personalized based on the services you probably already use
– AddToAny “More” button lets you instantly access any other service anytime
– Right-click to share from the context menu (optional)
– Share to multiple services quickly while keeping the share popup open:
– Just Ctrl+click or ⌘+click on a service, or
– Click the middle mouse button
– Large buttons with vector icons
– Perfectly crisp on high PPI screens such as Retina displays or the Chromebook family

Customizable:

– Customize the services that appear in the sharing menu
– Drag & drop to rearrange the order of services in the sharing menu
– Toggle AddToAny in your context menu
– Add a custom service to share to

Fast & Secure:

– Optimized to load instantly without slowing down Google Chrome
– Directs to the HTTPS version of sites for privacy on shared networks
– AddToAny doesn’t collect personal information

A lightweight extension to reduce Google Chrome’s memory footprint…

If you use Google Chrome, “The Great Suspender” (browser extension) will actually reduce your memory footprint by basically freezing or suspending tabs you have open after a prescribed amount of time. For example, I have “The Great Suspender” configured to suspend any open tabs I have active after a time period of 15 minutes. As a result, memory is freed up and the CPU becomes less taxed. To reactivate the suspended tab, simply click on the page to reload the page content.

You can download this highly rated app at the Google Chrome Store (see source link below).

“App Launcher Customizer” for Google Chrome

“App Launcher Customizer” is a Google Chrome browser extension that allows you to customize the launcher and add more than 250 Google shortcuts. I bet you didn’t know that Google had that many shortcuts, but they do.

The real killer part of this launcher is that the extension also allows you to create your own custom shortcuts to any website that you want. You can get this Chrome extension at the Chrome Web Store (see source link below).

Explain and Send Screenshots by Jason Savard

“Explain and Send Screenshots” is a browser extension (new to me) that gives you the ability to capture screenshots and to record video of your screen. Once the capture is performed, you can write text, crop an image and perform other functions in the editor that is built in (such as insert arrows, lines, and circles to point things out). I especially like the option of uploading my own images into the editor; which, is an option you do not typically see in these type of browser extensions.

I am still playing around with this extension; however, I can tell you the developer is top notch, for which I encourage you to explore some of his other browser extensions (that in my opinion are the best out there).

Google Chrome Extension – Shortcuts for Google

This is a nice Google Chrome extension, called Shortcuts for Google, that gives you the ability to launch over 300 Google services (i.e. like Gmail, Maps, Calendar, Keep, etc…) directly from a button on the toolbar. What has sold me on this extension is that you can also add your own customized shortcuts, in addition to the services that are provided by Google; AND, any changes you make will sync and be the same should you change to another computer. Definitely is a great launcher to have that becomes part of your web browser. Also, a big help if you are a Chromebook user. 5 Star rating in the Google Chrome Store.

Display all Google™ services as buttons in a space-saving popup next to your address bar. Reach services like Gmail, Google Reader, Google Maps, Google Calendar, and many more in just two clicks from your browser. The extension includes nearly 300 Google services and websites.

iChrome – Customizable New Tab Page or Home Page Extension For Google Chrome

Since owning my Chromebook I have been experimenting with just about anything and everything I can get my hands on. My most recent discovery is a Google Chrome browser extension called iChrome. I currently have iChrome set to load when I open a new tab; however, it can also be configured to be used as your home page.

Why iChrome? Well, first off, it ties in nicely with my other Google apps by displaying (for example) my email, calendar, notes, drive, etc… in a nicely layed out customizable panel with the options to customize the background, as well. Displaying of these items is done through a widgets selection page. I especially like the widget for Facebook where I can browse Facebook and at the same time have view of my other widget panels such as my email, calendar, notes, drive, weather, stock market; PLUS, the widget panel I have setup to launch the Google apps I have installed. You can even set up additional tabbed pages.

iChrome is the best of the best, in my opinion, for creating that new tab page or home page. Kudos to the developer on making a very fine product that serves a very useful and productive purpose. The FREE version does contain an advertising bar that can be moved around and is not obtrusive at all.

iChrome includes nearly 50 widgets, thousands of stunning backgrounds, and powerful features including:

Dozens of widgets including: Weather, Sports, News, Stocks, RSS, Bookmarks, Gmail, Recently Closed Tabs, and more! Drag and drop customization on 1-5 columns or a grid! Fully featured voice search and “OK Google” hotword detection Buy Pro and get dark and transparent themes, live backgrounds, maximizable widgets, hourly weather forecasts, and more Navigate between an unlimited number of customizable tabs, each with their own widgets Work completely offline anytime, everything (even the backgrounds) is ready whenever you are! And hundreds more features! Install iChrome now and check them out!

Close This Tab – Chrome Web Store

Today I would like to share with you a Google Chrome browser extension, called “Close This Tab”, that I highly recommend that serves a very useful purpose and will increase your productivity. What this extension does is allow you close a tab by going to a side of the screen and mouse clicking on a closer bar that will appear. When you go to the side of the screen you will see a colored bar appear which is a cue that you can mouse click to close the tab. “Close This Tab” is configurable in that you can designate which side of the screen you want to use as the hotspot (where the colored closer bar will appear). By default, the colored closer bar is on the left side of the screen; which, for me, is ideal. You can also adjust the width of the colored closer bar.

Where this extension comes in handy is when you have the browser set to full screen (which is my preference).  I no longer have to go to the top of the screen, to search for and close the active tab. If you are a Chromebook user, this is a must-have extension that will also work when you need to close any Google Chrome Apps that you have open.

Boxcryptor – Chrome Web Store (for your Chromebook)

Boxcryptor for Chrome is currently in beta; however, if you are looking for a way to encrypt files on your Chromebook and store them on the cloud (such as Google Drive and others), this a great option to consider. By encrypting your files, you are in essence making the impossible to be opened or seen. The Chrome version of Boxcrypt, as featured in this article, is currently in Beta Testing…

Boxcryptor is the encryption solution optimized for the cloud which allows you to use all popular cloud storage providers such as Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft SkyDrive and Box without sacrificing safety, privacy, or comfort.  With Boxcryptor you can easily encrypt files locally in your browser before uploading them to your cloud. Your cloud provider only receives encrypted files and you keep complete control of your data!

Unload, Park, Suspend Tabs To Reduce The Memory Footprint Of Google Chrome

Have you ever noticed that when you use your web browser and have multiple tabs open, things will slow down? A solution to this problem, if you use the Google Chrome web browser, is to install the browser extension called “The Great Suspender”. This extension automatically unloads (suspends) the tabs you are not using, but will retain their titles and favicons. The extension allows you to manually suspend tabs or you can configure the tabs to suspend after a set period of time. You can even whitelist tabs that you do not want to go into suspension. To take a tab out of suspension, simply click on the web page of the tab.

In the end, what “The Great Suspender” does is reduce the memory footprint that is consumed by having numerous tabs open; thus, a faster browser experience.

Google Chrome Extension – Nimbus Screenshot and Screen Video Recorder

If you use the Google Chrome Browser or own a Chromebook, you need to install the browser extension called Nimbus. This extension, to me, is hybrid in nature between a browser extension and an actual app. I can tell you it is the best, by far, screen and video capture extension (app) out there for Google Chrome and the Chromebook. The clips that you capture can be edited (with the built in editor) and stored locally on your computer or online (at Nimbus or Google Drive or Slack).

In summary, here is what Nimbus can do:

Google Chrome Browser Extension – Avira Safe Shopping

I first saw Avira Safe Shopping Chrome Browser extension at Major Geeks and decided to give it a spin. The Avira Safe Shopping browser extension is an extension developed by Avira, whom you may recognize as one of the leading makers of Avira Antivirus or predominantly now known as Avira Free Security Suite. I was skeptical at first after installing this extension, but once I discovered what it can do, it is a keeper in my book.

Once installed you will see a red shopping cart icon with a check mark in the cart. If you visit any site, you can click on the icon to determine if the site is safe, how many trackers were blocked and how many ads were blocked. If you perform a Google Search this extension will place a green check mark next to the sites Avira deem safe.  Also, discovered this worked with Bing, as well.

Where the real power in this extension is when you are shopping for something. For example, I am an avid Amazon shopper and if I bring up a product in Amazon, the Avira Safe Shopper will display a bar at the top of the browser displaying a comparative best deal and other offers (at other sites).

After briefly exploring the Avira Safe Shopper Chrome browser extension, I am going to keep this extension active to see what kind of mileage I get out of it. Give it a try, you have nothing to lose and may actually help you save some money.

Find Out If Your Emails Get Read With Email Tracker

I am currently trying out a Google Chrome browser extension, called Email Tracker, that works with Gmail, Outlook / Hotmail, Google Inbox, and Yahoo Mail. Its’ main sole purpose is to alert you when your sent emails have been read. Simply install and any future emails you send are automatically tracked. No account signup is required. Email Tracker is currently carrying an excellent review rating (based on approximately 200 reviews).

A circle will appear when the tracking is enabled on the sent email and a checkmark will appear when it has been read. Works for unlimited email accounts and sent emails.

Google Chrome Extension Manager Called “Extensity” (5 Star Rating)

I did not realize how many Google Chrome Extensions and Apps I had installed until I installed Extensity (see source link below). This Google Chrome browser extension (which carries a 5 star rating) is a tool that allows you to quickly manage (enable or disable) all of your other Google Chrome browser extensions. You can also setup profiles to determine when specific extensions should be enabled and when not. You can also launch your Chrome apps from the list, as well.

  • Keep your browser fast – disable extensions that you won’t use right away.
  • Keep your toolbar clean
  • Ideal companion for extensions collectors.
  • Turn all extensions off (and back on) with a single click.
  • Quick switch between several extensions groups using the Profiles feature.

I recently installed FireShot and have been quite impressed. FireShot is a Google Chrome browser extension that gives you the very convenient ability to capture screenshots. You can quickly capture full web pages in their entirety; capture only visible portions of the screen; or, capture selective areas on the screen. Once you make the screen capture you can save the screenshot to disk (as a PDF, JPeg, or Png) or you can copy it to the clipboard.

Geek Squeaks (#2015-38) FEATURING — My Reset Experience With Windows 10 — and MORE GREAT STUFF

My Reset Experience With Windows 10 – I recently performed a reset on my Windows 10 based computer and found the experience to be quite positive. I thought I would share some pointers with you so that if you have to perform a reset, it is not a scary experience.  Even though the reset preserves your personal files, I highly recommend that you always have a backup of any files on your computer that you cannot live without.

To get to the reset option in Windows 10, click on the Windows Start button (bottom left corner), go to Settings > Update & security > Reset this PC > Get started and choose an option. The option I chose was to reinstall Windows 10 and keep my personal files. This option will reinstall Windows 10 and keep your personal files; will remove the apps and drivers that you originally installed; will remove the changes made to any settings (and return them to the default settings); and, will remove any apps that the PC manufacturer installed (Note: If your PC came with Windows 10, the apps from your PC manufacturer will be reinstalled.).  After I launched the reset on my PC, it was pretty much hands free; and, what I really liked was that following the reset, Windows 10 generated a html page on my desktop titled “removed apps” that listed all of the programs I originally had installed on my computer. I had already written down what I wanted to re-install, but this list came in quite handy. In the end, the reset took approximately a half hour to 45 minutes and I can honestly say my computer is cleaner and faster.

How To Mark All Your Unread Gmail’s As Being Read  – After performing a reset on my Windows 10 computer, I found myself motivated to do some housecleaning in my Gmail account. One of the issues I ran into was that I had hundreds of email’s that I did not read. As a result, I needed and wanted to mark those emails, as being read. The problem with this is that Gmail will only allow you to bulk select only a certain number of emails. This is where I started thinking, “there has to be a way to mark all the emails in my account as being read”. After performing some online research, I found an article at a site called Chron, titled “How to Mark an Entire Gmail Inbox as Read“. By using the Google Search box in your email as a filter to generate all unread messages, and following the step-by-step instructions, at Chron, you can easily mark hundreds (or thousands) of unread emails and change them to read.

A Simple Program To Troubleshoot Network-Related Problems – If you manage a network, Win Network Tools may be helpful. The program provides a graphical interface (or launcher) of common command line tools that are built into Windows (that are typically run from the command prompt) and some other options (such as Speed Test) that will launch a site to test out your connection speed. What would be nice is if this program had a “portable app” option readily available for the tech toolbox. I did find that if I installed the program, and copied the “WinNetworkTools.exe” to another location (such as a flash drive) I was still able to run the program.  I then uninstalled it from the computer. Nice concept…  May contact the developer to suggest the portable app idea.

Checker Plus for Gmail – You do not know what you are missing if you do not have Checker Plus for Gmail installed (as a Google Chrome extension). In my opinion, this is probably one of the best (and most useful) extensions available. I currently use this to monitor 4 different Gmail accounts and the best part is that you can set this to run in the background so that you will get notifications when an email arrives. If you have Chrome installed, get this one…

Shield Your Electronics From Electrical Power Surges – When Christmas rolls around many of you may be installing new electronic equipment. What we have a tendency to forget is to purchase a surge protector to help protect the equipment from power surges. I went on the hunt to find what I think is a good investment and came up with the Tripp Lite 8 Outlet Surge Protector Power Strip 25ft Cord Right Angle Plug 1440 Joules . This Tripp Lite Surge Protector has a 1440 joule surge suppression rating with EMI/RFI line noise filtering to help components perform at their peak while extending their lifespan; 8 outlets with 3 specially designed to accommodate transformer plugs without blocking other outlets; an extra-long 25 foot cord with space-saving right angle plug; diagnostic LEDs that alerts you to the protection and grounding status; convenient built-in outlet safety covers to protect young children from possible harm and prevent dust from eroding internal components; and, a lifetime Warranty and $75,000 Ultimate Lifetime Insurance for connected devices. On top of this, to support my opinion on this, this surge protector is carrying a 5-Star rating.

Geek Squeaks (#2015-19) – View And Control Your Android Device From Your Computer — and MORE FREE STUFF

View And Control Your Android Device From Your ComputerVysor is a Google Chrome extension that is currently in beta (testing) that allows you to mirror (and control) your Android device (smartphone or tablet) from your Windows based computer. Keep in mind this utility is in beta testing, so there may be bugaboos… Your smartphone or tablet must be connected to your computer via USB. Typically this is not a problem for many Android device users, due this is a method that we often use to charge our devices. You can read in detail — CLICK HERE — the steps and driver involved for this to work. If you are successful, I think you will find that Vysor is an awesome application in the making where you can control every aspect of your Android device from your computer (even texting).

In summary, the ingredients to make this work are: USB debugging must be enabled on your device; your device connected to your computer via USB; the Google Chrome browser; the Google Chrome Vysor extension,; and the ABD driver installed. May sound complicated, but is not as hard as you think and in the end you have a very impressive (and useful) application.

Sandboxie Now Supports Windows 10 – If you do not know what Sandboxie is then you are missing out on a very special piece of software that can keep you safe… Sandboxie is a software application that gives you the ability to run other software applications and surf the internet in an isolated abstraction area called a sandbox. Under the supervision of Sandboxie, an application operates normally and at full speed, but can’t effect permanent changes to your computer. Instead, the changes are effected only in the sandbox; thus, in the event of a malware infection or the software does not meet your needs, you simply delete the sandbox. I currently use Sandboxie to test software that I am not sure about. Since the my upgrade to Windows 10, I found that the developers of Sandboxie are working on a compatible version for Windows 10. If you are a Windows 10 and Sandboxie user, you may want to give the beta (test) version a try (CLICK HERE); HOWEVER, please note that SBIE Beta v5 does not support Windows Metro Apps or the Edge browser at this time. You will need to change your default web browser in Win 10 from Edge to something else. For example, in my case, I am currently (and safely) using Sandboxie to run the Google Chrome browser inside a sandbox.

Watching video in our web browser is commonplace these days and is often implanted in the middle of whatever story you are reading to help bring the story home. This is all good; however, oftentimes there many distractions (such as ads, other videos, side bars, etc…) that can take away from the focus of the video.

A solution to making the video you desire to watch the main and only focus in the browser window, I suggest you take a look at the browser extension or add-on called Turn Off The Lights.

Checker Plus for Gmail – One Of The Highest Rated Google Chrome Extensions Out There

When I see a five star rating at the Google Chrome Web Store I know it has to be something good. If you are a Google Chrome browser fan and use Gmail then you must download the Google Chrome browser extension called Checker Plus for Gmail.

Before I go further, if you click this link (Checker Plus for Gmail) you will be taken to the Chrome Web Store; however, if you want to meet the author of this fantastic creation and learn more in detail about this extension, CLICK HERE …  The author’s main site also provides a forum, frequently asked questions, and other goodies that is an indicator (as a software reviewer) that the author is serious about what they do (as a trusted developer) and will continue to develop and fine tune their work. I can’t get over how good this extension is…

Due to this browser extension being very featured rich, I am going to cut to the chase and post the highlights, features and video (verbatim) as posted on the author’s site (see below); but there is one feature that I really love and that is you can configure Checker Plus for Gmail to read an incoming email to you (which is very unique).

I encourage you to take a look at this extension. It is definitely number one on my list of Chrome browser extensions at this time and is now added to my list of “Top Ten Google Chrome Browser Extensions I Can’t Live Without“…

Highlights...

  • The fastest and easiest way to manage multiple email accounts
  • One of the highest rated Chrome extensions – featured many times on PCWorld
  • Trusted developer of many extensions – more than one million satisfied users worldwide
  • Lots of features, options and updates – just read the version changes in the logs below
  • Personal tech support from me (the developer) – very fast response times, 5-30 minutes
  • Supports “Inbox by Gmail”
  • I’ll add your suggestions
  • Safer – requires less permissions and only access to Google Mail’s website

Features…

  • See the people emailing you just like in the Gmail chat notification, with an option to show their contact photos or your assigned photos for them.
  • Voice notification: If you get an email while you’re busy watching a movie or cooking dinner this extension can optionally read it out loud ie. “Jason says, dinner at my place”. It’s great for the visually impaired.
  • Option to monitor any Gmail or custom labels
  • Option to run in background when Google Chrome is closed and still get new email alerts
  • Zoom in and out of emails which have large images
  • Popup mail preview window to read, archive, mark as read or delete emails without leaving the current tab (or option to go directly to your Gmail tab)
  • Can also be used as a widget for the extension “Awesome New Tab Page” (ANTP) which supports multiple accounts
  • Desktop sound or voice notifications when new mail arrives (or add your own sounds)
  • Support for multiple Gmail and Google Apps accounts
  • Option to open “Mail to” links in your Gmail instead of your regular mail client
  • This Gmail notifier has more than 10 different icon sets, choose your favorite!
  • You change the generated voice by adding TTS (text to speech) voice extensions
  • The fast way to inbox zero. Yes that’s a thing.

A 5 Star Google Chrome Screen Capture Utility

I love screen capture applications due they are very useful in drafting articles for the blog and for everyday computing. I have featured other capture programs on the blog, and every I time turn around I stumble across another one. The one I present today, called FireShot, I somehow missed on my radar. FireShot currently is carrying a 5 star rating (from over 7500 reviews) and was selected in 2013 as “The Best Free Google Chrome Extension for 2013″ by PCMAG.COM”. FireShot is available as a Google Chrome Extension from the Chrome Web Store.

FireShot Screen Capture Utility

FireShot typically performs like many of the other screen capture utilities; however, it offers more features than what else is out there. For example, one feature that really jumped out at me is that you can capture a page (or part of page) with FireShot and save it as a PDF file.

This is only one of the features and is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to FireShot.

Other features are:

✓ Capture web pages entirely

✓ Capture only visible part of the page

✓ Capture selection

✓ Save screenshot to disk as PDF, PNG, and JPEG

✓ Copy screenshot to clipboard

✓ Print screenshot

Additionally, users on Windows can do the following:

✓ Edit screenshot: crop, resize, add text and arrow annotations, blur areas and apply other effects

✓ Print

✓ Save screenshot to PDF files

✓ Save screenshot to disk as PDF, PNG, GIF, JPEG, BMP

✓ Send to OneNote (Pro version)

✓ Upload to Twitter, Google Picasa, Facebook, ImageShack, Flickr, EasyCaptures

✓ Copy screenshot to clipboard

✓ Print screenshot

✓ E-Mail

✓ Export to external editor

Get The NEW Chrome Bookmark Manager Extension (by Google)

You can make the Google Chrome Bookmarks and the Bookmarks manager more powerful by incorporating the intelligence of Google Search with a NEW modern user interface (called Bookmark Manager). This extension is a “must have” extension… You will especially like the “auto folders” feature that will automatically categorize your bookmarks for you. I never cared much for bookmark managers built into browsers, but this one has me thinking differently.

Google Chrome Bookmark Manager

Here is what you get with this extension:

One-click save: When you bookmark, you can now save an image and note to make your bookmarks more helpful. Also, Google will suggest a folder if it seems like it could be a fit.

Improved search: Quickly find that elusive page with search powered by Google, which looks not only at the bookmark title and snippet, but also the bookmarked page’s content.

Collect bookmarks by topic: Your bookmarks will automatically be organized by topic, like “Tokyo” and “Photography.” If you’d rather, you can still organize them into folders yourself.

Familiar bookmarks, new look: Your existing bookmarks will automatically get updated with images and descriptions, wherever possible.

Share: Have a folder of favorite bookmarks? You can make it public and share the link with whomever you’d like to access it. Everything else will remain private.

Access your bookmarks anywhere: Bookmarked an article on your phone to finish reading on your laptop? Chrome will continue to sync your bookmarks across all of your devices, just like it does today.

Send And Receive SMS Text Messages From Google Chrome On Your Computer

Wish you could answer your phone text from your computer?  Well, you can with the Google Chrome browser extension, called MightyText. You must first install the MightyText Android App, on your phone, from the Google Play store which will enable the permission to sync your text messages from your phone to the browser extension. After you have completed that installation on your phone, install the MightyText Chrome browser extension from the Chrome Web Store.

Mighty Text - Google Chrome Browser Extension

I’ve been using MightyText for over a week now and I must say I am liking what I am seeing and experiencing. I like the idea that when I am on my computer and I receive a text on my phone I will also get the text on my computer where I can reply to the sender. Since you are using your computer’s keyboard, typing out your text messages is much faster. You can also have your contacts synced with your phone so that you can pull up a contact and start sending text messages (and even generate phone calls) directly from your browser window.

Other features include syncing photos/videos from your phone, creating draft text messages, a built in scheduler and a visual status of your phone’s battery (and an alert when the battery is low).

My Top Ten Google Chrome Browser Extensions I Can’t Live Without

I was at a dead end this morning in deciding what to write about when the answer was staring right back at me. I spend a great deal of time reviewing software, hardware, apps, browser extensions, etc…; many of which I end up using and can’t live without. One such category of things I can’t live with out is my Google Chrome Browser Extensions. I have exactly 10 extensions installed; therefore, these are “My Top Ten Google Chrome Browser Extensions I Can’t Live Without”.

I thought I would share these extensions with you to see what you think:

Calculator – This is, in my opinion, the best calculator out there that be readily accessed from the extension toolbar. This is a standard calculator with a great productivity feature:  You can put the result directly into the field you are currently on with a single click.  No cutting and pasting required!

Calculator

Cool Clock – An extension fully loaded with tons of useful time-related features… But the best part is, it is totally COOL.

Cool Clock

Forecastfox – Forecastfox delivers international weather from AccuWeather.com. Features include: severe weather alerts, radar, current conditions, 7-day forecast, details for each day, recent locations quick switch, and links to hourly forecasts and more details

WOT (Web of Trust) – I install this on every PC I have to help protect the PC from visiting malicious web sites. WOT is a website reputation and review service that helps you make informed decisions about whether to trust a website or not when you are searching, shopping or surfing online.

WOT - Web of Trust

Pocket – This is “must have” extension. When you find something on the web that you want to view later, put it in Pocket. It automatically syncs to your phone, tablet or computer so you can view it at any time, even without an internet connection. Once you start using this you will not be able to put it down.

Pocket

Pushbullet – To fully appreciate Pushbullet you need to install it on all of your devices (computers, smartphones and tablets). This browser extension and app gives you the ability to push files, notes, messages to and from your devices. Pushbullet also will automatically show you all of your phone’s notifications right on your computer. This means you can see who’s calling or read and reply to text messages even if your phone is on silent or in another room.

Pushbullet

Hangouts – Google+ Hangouts brings one-on-one and group conversations to life with photos, emoji, and video calls for free. Connect with friends across computers, Android and Apple devices.

Hangouts

OneNote Clipper – OneNote is developed by Microsoft and is available for different platforms. It is the easiest way to save anything on the web to OneNote in just one click. It’s like your camera for the web.

OneNote

ScribeFire – An easy-to-use blog editor lets you post to all of your blogs. ScribeFire is the editor that I use to create and post my blog articles.Once you learn how to use ScribeFire you will find it is a real timesaver.

Another Awesome Google Chrome Weather Extension

If you read my earlier post, A Five Star Weather Extension For Google Chrome, I was quite excited to come across the Google Chrome browser extension called YoWindow Weather. This excitement, as it usually does, lead me to look at, and explore, other weather browser extension options (for Google Chrome).

One thing I am leanring, and it just may be me, when performing a search at the Google Chrome Web Store, for “weather” as an example, you do not get a good search result. After noticing this, I went in another direction, using the Google Search Engine and came across this gem of a weather browser extension, called Forecastfox.

Forecastfox

Forecastfox apparently is a favorite extension of Firefox users and was eventually piped over to Chrome. Forecastfox is very nicely done in bringing you weather stats (through the AccuWeather.com service).

Features of this weather extension are:

– severe weather alerts

– radar

– current conditions

– 7-day forecast

– details for each day

– recent locations quick switch

– links to hourly forecasts and more details

A Five Star Weather Extension For Google Chrome

If you follow along with my blog, you will find over a period of time that I have a liking for weather related apps and software. Today I came across a really nice weather app that is a Google Chrome extension, called YoWindow Weather.

If you use Google Chrome, this extension makes it easy and fast to grab the weather stats for your location (or other locations around the world).

I like the idea the YoWindow Weather pulls the stats from the National Weather Service, for my locaton, which is my “go to” weather source. You will also like that the when you click on the YoWindow Weather icon on the extension bar, the app will give you a virtualized landscape view of what is actually occurring outside. You can also go full screen with YoWindow Weather to give you your own weather station that can be left up and running to keep you current on the weather.

In the end, nice weather app that definitely meets its’ five star rating.

YoWindow Weather

Awesome Screenshot (Capture and Annotate) Google Chrome Browser Extension (Five Star Rating)

As a blogger I often use a screen capture program to grab screenshots to use in my postings. Most screen capture programs I use are locally installed Windows programs; however, lately I have been using the Google Chrome browser extension called Awesome Screenshot (Capture and Annotate) to grab screenshots to post in Scribefire which is the editor I use to draft my posts.

One of my goals in my blog drafting and posting is to solely find ways to use my browser to do all the work, without relying on locally installed software. Using Awesome Screenshot (Capture and Annotate) and Scribefire together, which is also a browser extension, is bringing me closer to that goal.

Awesome Screenshot One thing I want to point out about Awesome Screenshot (Capture and Annotateis that it is one of the highest rated browser extensions, with approximately 1.3 million users, at the Chrome Web Store, which speaks highly of this application.

Capture the whole page or any portion, annotate screenshot, blur sensitive info, one-click upload to share.

Capture

1. Capture or clip selected area, or all visible portion, or entire page

2. Support  PNG format

3  Support  horizontal scroll when capturing

2.Crop and scroll & Show crop area dimension

3. Use eraser to hide sensitive information

4. Copy the screenshot  and paste it to gmail etc. Support Windows and Linux.

Save & Share

1. Save to Local

2. One-click to upload to awesomescreenshot.com and get a shareable link

3. Support Google Drive (Gdrive) Now.

Shut Down Windows 8 With Shutdown8

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] Shut Down Windows 8 With Shutdown8 – After the release of Windows 8.1 Update, Microsoft did make things better for people to navigate around; however, shutting down the PC is still a hidden component (when you are on the desktop side of Windows 8).

To remedy this issue on my Windows 8 computer, I installed a little program called Shutdown8.

Shutdown8

Shutdown8 is available as an install file or a portable app. I went for the portable app version. Once you get it installed, pin the Shutdown8 executable file to your taskbar making it very handy to shutdown your PC.

Not only does Shutdown8 provide convenience in shutting down your PC, it also has the following features:

  • Shuts down/powers off computers at a specified time
  • Users can set the timer with the [+][-] keys or the mouse wheel button
  • Hibernate Mode: Saves the contents from the RAM to a hard disk and shuts down
  • Sleep Mode: Saves the state of the computer to RAM and enters a low-power mode
  • Works well with Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8

GEEK SQUEAKS – Set, Forget, Simple and Fast Backup Software

I actually forgot about this software being on my PC. It is called Bvckup; and, it is designed to make maintenance free backup copies of files and directories.

Bvckup

Once you perform the initial setup (which is very easy to do), Bvckup will do the rest of the work for you. For example, I have four main (root) folders on my PC that contains the bulk of my personal files. After performing the initial setup, Bvckup will automatically perform backups of these files and folders in real time (anytime a file or folder changes). The program will also alert you to any errors it may encounter. I discovered, as a result of running, Bvckup that I had some directories (or folders) where there was some file corruption going on.

Bvckup is currently FREE and is in the Beta stages of development.

Using Firefox to Access System Commands And Other Programs In Your Computer

Recently I posted an article about Pale Moon, which is a spin-off of Firefox. Since Pale Moon is technically Firefox in disguise, that has been optimized to run faster, I have been playing around with some of the Firefox add-ons and extensions, that run just as well with Pale Moon. I especially like the portable version of Pale Moon and encourage you to give it a try. I really love it and can attest it is the best browser out there that has been optimized to run from a flash drive.  I also have the portable version of Pale Moon installed on my computer and I find myself using it more and more.

A Firefox (or Pale Moon) add-on that especially caught my attention, that recently was released by Mozilla Online, is called Easy Access. This add-on is special in that it gives you the ability to access and launch the system commands and other programs in your computer from the status bar that is located at the bottom of the browser window.

For example, using the screenshot below, you will see a grouping of icons (programs) that I added using Easy Access, which allows me to launch these programs from my browser window.

Easy Access

By default, Easy Access installs with a some commonly used programs (such as Notepad, Paint, Calculator, and My Computer). It is very easy to add additional programs to this listing by by clicking on the Easy Access icon and clicking on Manage Your Own Easy Access.

A Screenshot Utility for Windows/Mac, Chrome,Firefox, IE and Opera

I have tried quite a few screenshot utilities that can launched from your browser and none performs as well as LightShot.

LightShot

LightShot can be installed as a browser add-on/extension or as a standalone application for the Windows and Mac platforms. I especially use LightShot to grab screenshots from my browsers (especially Chrome and Firefox). It only involves a 2 mouse click process to select an area on your computer screen and quickly grab a screenshot. Not only that, once the screen shot has been acquired you have the following options available to you:

Share screenshots via Internet

Do you want to share photos, images, parts of a webpage or any content that you see on the screen with your friends? Simply start the Lightshot, select an area and click upload button! You will get a link for sending it to your friends or for posting it to your blog, Twitter, Facebook, anywhere!

Copy screenshot to clipboard

You can place captured area directly to the Windows clipboard, and paste it into any suitable application such as Word, Paint, Photoshop or any other. This can be done either by pressing “Copy” or by pressing Ctrl+C hotkey. Another option is to hold down the Ctrl key and select area, this will copy screenshot to the clipboard as soon as you release mouse button.

Edit screenshot immediately after it taken

You can edit your screenshot online with powerfull Pixlr Editor. It has classic Pen, Brush and Blur tools, you can highlight something or add a text note. There are a lot of other cool features and stuff you can work with. Take a video tour to know it all!

Save screenshots to your PC

Use “Save” button or “Ctrl+S” hotkey to save screenshot as JPG, PNG or BMP formats if you want to make a lot of shots and choose the best later or process them in some other way.

Use hotkeys

Almost every task has its own hotkey. You can use keyboard shortcuts to make LightShot even faster.

A Google Chrome Calculator Browser Extension With A 5 Star Rating

If you are a Google Chrome fan, then you need to install the Calculator browser extension. It gives you easy access to a very nice looking standard calculator (with big buttons) where you can use your keyboard or mouse to input your numerical data. I have found that I use this calculator frequently, due that it is readily accessible in my web browser (where I spend most of my computing time).

This is a standard calculator with a great productivity feature: You can put the result directly into the field you are currently on with a single click. No cutting and pasting required!

When on a field, click on the calculator icon on the toolbar and you will see a basic calculator with a ‘drop’ button (if you’re not on a text field, this button is not available). When finished with the calculation, click the drop button and the value is placed in the field your were on. You no longer need to cut and paste values from your calculator.

On many occasions, when working on a blog article (or post), I find it useful to open two browser windows side-by-side in order to quickly research information in one browser window and quickly post my thoughts or links in the other browser window. Windows 7 gives us the ability to drag a window to the sides of the monitor to make this happen; however, when using my browser (Google Chrome) there is another (easier way) that requires only two clicks of the mouse.

It is called, Dualless

Dualless

Dualless is a Google Chrome Browser extension that gives you the ability to split your browser window in two (to simulate a dual monitor setup). For example, if you have two tabs open in Chrome, by clicking on the Dualless button on the extension toolbar, you will be presented with various ratios that you can split the browser window (see below). Simply click on a ratio selection and the browser tabs will separate into two windows at the ratio you desire. To return to a full screen window simply click on the Dualless button, select the ratio of “1” and the browser will return to full screen.

So far I am finding Dualless to be an extremely useful tool when blogging (as I mentioned), researching information and for shopping on the internet.
