Convert Microsoft Publisher Files to PDF Free Online

Just experienced a situation where someone sent me a Microsoft Publisher file as an email attachment. Guess what, most people, including myself, do not have Publisher installed and when using my Chromebook there is no conversion option available. To remedy this issue, I went to a website called “Convert Publisher to PDF” and within minutes, after uploading the publisher file and downloading the converted pdf file, I could see the contents of the file. Also appears you can save the converted file to Google Drive, Box, and OneDrive.

Spotify vs. Google Play Music: Which should you subscribe to? | Android Central

I am currently looking at Google Play Music and Spotify as an online music service subscription… So which one is the best?

Spotify is one of the most popular music services on the market today, but is it more deserving of your money than Google Play Music? Depending on your musical habits, the answer may be easier than you think.

A Modern Screenshot And Capture Tool

Here is a screenshot tool, called CloudShot, that may pique your interest. I love screenshot programs and CloudShot stands out in that it has a modern interface that allows you to share your screenshots via cloud services like Dropbox/Imgur, upload to FTP, copy or just save it.  I also dug a little deeper on the site and found there is a portable version, as well.

MultCloud Upgraded To Include NEW Google Chrome App

Multcloud is a web based app where you can bring together multiple cloud drives into one place (such as Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Box, MEGA, SugarSync, Amazon Cloud Drive, Amazon S3 as well as FTP, WebDav, etc.).  I use Multcloud to quickly manage my cloud drives to access and transfer my files from one service to another. Today I was informed by AOMEI Technology that MultCloud was upgraded to include a NEW Google Chrome App

MultCloud

For home based personal account users, the FREE version of Multcloud is awesome when compared to other similar services.

You get (for FREE):

  • Access To the Online File Manager
  • Cross-File Transfer Capabilities
  • Unlimited Cloud Drive Quantity
  • A Data Transfer Cap of <10TB
  • General Transfer Speeds (which is sufficient for personal use)

If you need more, MultCloud offers a premium service that, in my opinion, cannot be beat.

Need Custom Labels??? You May Want To Check Out The NEW and IMPROVED Labeley!

Labeley is a FREE web app (that you work with from your web browser) that gives you the ability to “create custom stickers for all occasions, from birthday parties, weddings and other special events to kids camping trips, kids clothing, back-to-school programs and so on”. With Labeley you can create your own design(s) with the online label editor, save them for future reference, upload your own graphics (or pics) and when done you can have them printed (for a small fee) and sent to you.

Labeley

Aside from the sleek, user-friendly layout, Labeley comes with a variety of design options that make label creation easy and fun. Users can choose between different:

– label shapes
– borders
– ribbons and graphics
– colors and fonts

or they can revamp their own design by simply uploading it from their personal computers. The best thing is, they don’t even need to create an account if they want to remain anonymous.

Evernote and Google Keep Made Some Nice Upgrades This Past Week

… and, MORE GREAT GEEK SQUEAK STUFF (#2016-017)

Evernote and Google Keep are my two main note keeping applications. Evernote is for the important stuff and Google Keep is for the unimportant stuff.  Both are cloud based and are available on numerous platforms.

Unveiling the new Evernote for Windows

This past week Evernote made some noticeable improvements that made navigation of the sidebar more intuitive, searches are now more refined, and notebooks (and tags) can be color coded.  Read more about the changes to Evernote by CLICKING HERE.

The most noticeable improvement this past week to Google Keep is the NEW Google Keep Chrome extension that gives you the ability to save web pages, images and selected text with ease. To take a look at the Google Keep Chrome extension, CLICK HERE .

Both of these applications are especially helpful in keeping track of the things in our life; whether important and/or unimportant.

How To Watch YouTube In TV Mode On Your Computer

… and, MORE GREAT GEEK SQUEAK STUFF (#2016-015)

This week’s blog posting on “How To Watch YouTube In TV Mode On Your Computer” is actually a very easy posting for me. To go into the YouTube TV Mode on your computer, simply open your browser and type in the following URL: https://www.youtube.com/tv … That is all there is to it. Once you are there there are three very easy keyboard commands you need to know. By hitting the “G” key on your keyboard, a guide will slide out from the left side of the screen. To perform a YouTube search, simply hit the “S” key on your keyboard. If you need to go back to the Home Screen, simply hit the “ESC” key on your keyboard. You can also easily navigate YouTube.com/TV with your mouse (pay special attention to the sidebar on the left side of the screen).

YouTube TV

YouTube.com/TV is also called YouTube Leanback and can also be launched by entering the URL of https://www.youtube.com/leanback. This mode of watching YouTube, which is commonly not known (or is forgotten about), is especially beneficial for those who have the larger computer monitors or have a media center set up on a large screen TV.

File Encryption Software That I Was Unaware Of – Have you ever heard of MEO File Encryption Software? I was unaware it existed and glad that I found it. A free version is available for non-commercial use. If you like it, I found that following the install you can copy the folder where MEO File Encryption is installed to your flash drive and turn it into a portable app. Very nice (and easy) file encryption software with the following features (in the FREE version): Easily encrypt files and folders; Decrypt files that have been encrypted; Encrypt emails and send within MEO; and Create self-extracting encrypted files that can be decrypted without encryption software.

Bet You Never Saw This Before – I have been looking around for a bluetooth capable mouse for my Android tablet and came across a mouse with a bluetooth speaker built into it. It is called the Aerb® Wireless Bluetooth Speaking Mouse . I haven’t decided whether to splurge for this (just to have something different); but, I have never seen anything like it.  A mouse with a speaker built into it is a really neat concept; especially, for a tablet or smartphone.

Geek Squeaks (#2015-39) FEATURING — Put All Your Cloud Drives In One Place — and MORE GREAT STUFF

Put All Your Cloud Drives In One Place – Thought I would share with you an online service that I use called MultCloud (by AOMEI). This service provides a FREE option (as well as a PAID option) that can help you easily (and safely) manage multiple cloud storage services. For example, I currently manage online drives from Box, Copy, Google, Dropbox, Mediafire and OneDrive ALL from MultCloud. In that mix I also use MultCloud to manage two Google Drives. What MultCloud does is allow you to pull all of those services and manage those services from one location. MultCloud FREE features an online file manager, cross-cloud file transfers, and a countless number of cloud drives. The file transfer speeds for the FREE version are slower than the PAID version and there is a monthly data cap on the FREE version (which is quite high in my opinion). For normal everyday use, the FREE version has worked for me and in the end (after I give this a run for awhile), I may opt to go to the PAID version.

Use Your Android Phone (or Tablet) To Convert An Image To Text – Ever heard of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) where you scan a paper document and OCR software that is engineered to recognize the characters in the document then translate (or convert) it into an electronic text version (that you can then edit, insert into documents, etc…)? There is an OCR version for your Android Phone or Tablet called Text Fairy that has the ability to scan for and extract text from an image. From my testing, I found Text Fairy to be quite accurate and the best part is that it is FREE. Some words of advice is when you scan the document is to make sure the images are sharp (with good lighting) and the text is black on a white background.

How To Disable Login Screen on Windows 10 after Sleep – I have been recently assisting quite a few folks with breaking through the Windows 8.1 barrier to Windows 10. One of the most asked questions that I am receiving is “How do I disable the login screen on Windows 10 after sleep?”. What this means is that Windows 10, by default, will go into a sleep mode when the computer is idle for a prescribed period of time. When the end user comes out the sleep mode, the computer will prompt you for your password. To change this setting, to prevent or disable the login prompt, is actually quite easy and the best way to show you is for you the watch the video below from Simple How To Guide

This Software May Be Useful When You Sell or Get Rid Of Your Hard Drive (or PC) – Came a across this portable app, called My Disk Wiper, that may be a keeper for the tech toolbox. What this portable app does is securely wipe hard drives, flash drives, SD cards, etc… by overwriting the files with a standard pattern that the developer claims cannot be undeleted or restored. To ensure maximum privacy the file names are wiped before deletion.

Geek Squeaks (#2015-35) FEATURING — GEGeek NOW On Facebook — and MORE GREAT STUFF

GEGeek NOW On Facebook – The motherload of all tech sites, GEGeek, is now featuring their GEGeek Tech Toolkit on Facebook. The toolkit, available through donation at the main GEGeek web site, is a complete collection of over 400 tech related FREE programs and suites (all available from a menu launch utility). If you are an information technology professional the GEGeek website and the GEGeek Toolkit should automatically become part of your mindset. Mike and Jason at GEGeek have gone to great lengths to review, collect, and maintain the information (and toolkit) that is available. Jason recently joined Mike to assist in maintaining the motherload. I personally thank both of them (and I encourage you to do the same). After you donate to acquire the toolkit, you are then entitled to the upgrades (which occur on a regular basis).

WordWeb Upgraded To Support Windows 10WordWeb has been a mainstay on my computer for years. It is a very useful and comprehensive one-click English thesaurus and dictionary for Windows. It can be used to look up words from almost any program, showing definitions, synonyms and related words. It includes pronunciations and usage examples, and has helpful spelling and sounds-like links. I especially like the one click lookup where you hold the CTRL key and right mouse click on a word to get the definition. WordWeb can also be installed as a portable app. You will be prompted for that option after you run the install file. Also, if you like WordWeb and use Google Chrome, be sure to download their WordCaptureX browser extension…  NOTE: WordWeb has been added to the What’s On My PC download page under the FREE Software swarm.

Geek Squeaks (#2015-28) FEATURING — NEW Gmail Features — and MORE GREAT STUFF

NEW Gmail Feature – Gmail now has a built in feature that gives you the ability to EASILY block a nuisance sender (via the web interface and on Android) and the ability to unsubscribe from various services (on Android only). I am especially eager to test the unsubscribe option…  You can read more (and get a visual of how this works) at the official Gmail blog

Just Added “Feedly” To The Downloads Page – Feedly is an RSS (Really Simply Syndicate) Reader that I use to connect to the blogs and news sites that I am interested in. What RSS allows you to do is subscribe to a sites’ RSS feed.  The reader then pulls down the content into the reader (from the sites that you are subscribed to). RSS allows you to automatically pull down content from numerous sites into one place where you can then read it (just like a newspaper).  If you are not using RSS, then you do not know what you are missing. Feedly does a nice job of this and gives you a ton of options.  I currently use the web based version of Feedly and the Android version of Feedly  …

An Exhaustive Comparison Of The Best Online File Storage Services

There are so many online file storage services these days that you can find yourself lost in the herd. To help you narrow down your choices, I recommend that you visit I Love Free Software where they have a table posted that is an exhaustive comparison of the 15 best FREE cloud storage services (i.e. Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, OneDrive, Tresorit, DataBagg, Bitcasa, ASUS WebStorage, IDrive, MEGA, pCloud, Inbox Storage, Copy.com, SpiderOak, and FlipDrive).

Cloud Storage Services

I am very familiar with everyone of these services and can tell you that the cross comparison table that I Love Free Software has compiled is of great value; especially, if you do not know what services to use.

What I am finding, even with myself, I have signed up with many of these services and before I knew it I was losing track of what I had stored and where.  My recommendation, is keep it to one or two services, focus on organizing your files and focus on encrypting any sensitive files that you intend to store online.

Raise Money With gofundme For The Things That Matter To You Most

Recently my work Director (and close friend) and her husband had a major setback where their home was completely destroyed by fire (see here). To assist getting them back on their feet, another Director that I work for came up with the innovated idea of using an online crowdsource fund raising site, called gofundme (to help get the word out and to help raise and manage the funds that were received).

A goal of $1k has been set for this particular fund raiser; and, if you are interested in helping out CLICK HERE gofundme is a perfectly safe way to help others out (including yourself) in situations where life throws you a curve ball.

gofundme

To get a few things out of the way about using this type of service:

First –  A small handling and management fee is charged to recipient of the funds and not the donors.

Second — You can setup a gofundme page to collect for other people, as was done for the family that I know.

Third — Use a credit card to make the donation.

The beauty of using gofundme is that it is tied in closely with Facebook where you can share information about the situation and that funds are being collected for whatever the purpose may be. You can also use the communication power of the internet; such as email, blogging, other social networking sites to post a link about the fund raiser.

Crowdfunding.com ranks gofundme, as of the date of this posting, as the #1 top crowdfunding site by Alexa (which analyzes the internet traffic to the site).

Sign Up For pCloud For Free Online Storage

Yesterday I featured pCloud’s Transfer Service; but, what I did not know is that pCloud is also an online file storage service that has features that some of the other contenders do not. After you signup for the service you are given 10GB’s of free space to store and share your files. At that point you can earn more space by completing various tasks and tutorials that they have set up. I am currently working toward upgrading my space by inviting other users. For every user that I invite, I get 1GB of additional space (up to 20GBs) and the person signing up also gets a 1GB of space.

If interested in taking a look at pCloud,

sign up and we’ll both get some FREE space.

pCloud

What is pCloud? pCloud is the right place to store and backup all your data – photos, videos, documents and large files without worrying about file size limit. All your files are stored safe in the cloud and available wherever you go, on any device – iOS, Android, Desktop, Web. All your files are immediately synchronized between your computer, your pCloud and all mobile devices and you have instant access to all updates you make.

pCloud has the typical features and options that you will see with some of the other online file storage services, but there are some features that make pCloud stand out:

  • You can upload as large files as your storage space allows you.
  • You can Choose a folder, go to options and click Get Upload Link. You will receive an unique Upload link. You can give that link to anyone who needs to send you a file and he/she can upload it directly to your cloud, even if the person doesn’t have a pCloud account.
  • You can (if pCloud installed) on your mobile devices tell pCloud to automatically backup all files you have on your phone to your pCloud account.
  • You can keep a copy of your important pCloud files on your phone by marking them as your favorite(s). You want to access certain files from your pCloud account even when you don’t have internet connection, you can just mark them as Favorite in the mobile application and a copy of those files will be stored locally on your mobile device and the changes to those files will be synchronized on every modification.
  • You can backup files from Dropbox, Facebook, Instagram and Picasa to your pCloud account.

Send Up To 5GB Encrypted Files For FREE (with up To 200MB per single file)

pCloud transfer was recently featured and recommended on I Love Free Software. According to the pCloud web site you are permitted to send large files via 2 methods (and no signup registration is required):

Method #1: Send large files up to 5GB for free with no single file size limit

Method #2: Send up to 5GB encrypted files with up to 200MB per single file

pCloud Transfer

I especially like the (encryption) method #2 where you can upload the files (less than 200mb each), select your recipients, and generate an encryption password. It is your responsibility to provide your friends with the password in order to decrypt and download the files.  Your friends will subsequently receive an email, with a link to the file(s) where they will enter the password to decrypt (and download) the file(s).

pCloud Encrypted Transfer is a highly – secured way to send private files using military-grade encryption methods, which are unbreakable by any known means. You can send up to 5GB to as many as 10 friends at once, absolutely free!

Spice Up Your Documents With CopyPasteCharacters

Have you ever seen documents or emails where someone has “somehow” inserted special characters or symbols in the document and you are wondering, “Where are these symbols on the keyboard?”. These symbols or characters are referred to in the geek world as “alt codes”. These symbols and characters are keyboard generated by pressing the ALT key in combination with numbers on the NUMBER PAD (on your keyboard). I recently posted an article about “ALT codes”, titled, “Using the Alt Key on your Keyboard to Make Special Characters” that leads you to a good visual source on how to apply these codes.

The problem you run into with these codes, without a visual reference, is remembering what “ALT” keys to apply to generate a symbol (or character).  Recently I found a simple cloud based solution that specializes in allowing you to easily copy and paste ALT code type symbols (and characters) into documents, emails, forums, etc…  The site is called CopyPasteCharacter.com.

CopyPasteCharacter.com

Once you get to the site you will find an array of various symbols (and characters) and if you open up an account you can even save and create your own character set. To use a character, you simply “left mouse click” on a symbol (or character) and the symbol (or character) will automatically be copied to the clipboard on your computer. At that point, what I do is left mouse click, select “paste” from the menu and the symbol (or character) will be inserted into the document. ❤

Microsoft Office Online and Dropbox Are Shaking Hands

If you follow the tech news you will know that Microsoft and Dropbox had earlier established a partnership with a goal to make it easier to work with your Microsoft Office applications from Dropbox. This goal is now to the point where the integration between Dropbox on the web and Office Online is a reality.

Now, when working in Office Online you can add your Dropbox account to easily browse, open and edit Office files with Office Online. You can also create new files in Office Online, and save them directly to your Dropbox.

The same integration is available from Dropbox in a web browser. You can now access Office Online directly from the file you are viewing. Just click the Open button when you’re previewing a Word, PowerPoint or Excel file from Dropbox on the web, and you can edit the file right from your browser using Office Online. NEW Version of Start.me

If you are into customizing your own homepage in your browser or wish you had the means to customize your homepage, I encourage you to take a look at start.me. I have been using start.me for over a year now and would be lost without it. It has become my main launching point to everything I do on the internet. This online application gives you the ability create a personal startpage (completely ad free) with your most important bookmarks, RSS feeds and even widgets.  I also like the fact that start.me is very tablet and smartphone friendly.

Start.me

Start.me is totally customizable (with background images of your choice) and continues to improve and get better. I just learned today when I launched Start.me in my browser that a new version has been released that features a new logo, new pages menu, availability of custom icons for bookmarks, transparency for widgets, new flow to adding bookmarks, and a new upload feature to adding images such as using copying and paste.

If interested in using start.me — click here — . I think you will find that this application gives you a way to become more organized and efficient when using the internet.

Three Must Have Diagnostic Tools by Windows Sysinternals

Windows Sysinternals is host to numerous advanced system utilities and technical information that is available (for FREE) to help you manage, troubleshoot and diagnose your Windows systems and applications. There are three of their utilities that I consider as “must have” utilities; and, the beauty of these three is that you can run them live from Sysinternals.

BgInfo – Displays relevant information about a Windows computer on the desktop’s background, such as the computer name, IP address, service pack version, and more. You can edit any field as well as the font and background colors, and can place it in your startup folder so that it runs every boot, or even configure it to display as the background for the logon screen. By default when you first run BgInfo it will display more than what is actually being shown in the screenshot and is very useful in getting good baseline visual information about any Windows based computer you may be troubleshooting.

BGinfo

Autoruns – Shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and when you start various built-in Windows applications like Internet Explorer, Explorer and media players. These programs and drivers include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. Autoruns reports Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, and much more. Autoruns goes way beyond other autostart utilities.

Autoruns

Process Explorer – Shows you information about which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded AND isuseful for tracking down DLL-version problems or handle leaks, and provide insight into the way Windows and applications work.

Extend The Functionality Of Evernote With CardDesk

If you are an Evernote user you may want to take a look at the new cloud app called CardDesk (which is currently in Beta). Signup for the account at CardDesk is FREE and you have nothing to lose.

CardDesk

In a nutshell CardDesk is a web application that ties in nicely with your Evernote account to give you a visual desktop organizer for your Evernote notes. The notes give the appearance of index cards that can be moved around and arranged on any number of virtual screens or desktops (where you can select from different backgrounds). You can edit a note by double clicking on the header of the note.  Nice concept…

What is meant by “The Cloud” or “Cloud Computing”

I often have people ask me; “What is the cloud or what is cloud computing?”. This past week at work I received a Google Gram (from Google) in my workplace email that really summed it up very nicely…

cloud image

Cloud Computing” is the use of the internet to run applications or store data. Until recently, most software programs ran on your personal computer. Cloud computing changes that: programs run on a remote server (or servers), accessed by (but not stored on) your computer. Web-based email = cloud computing. Google Apps = cloud computing. Facebook = cloud computing.

In the simplest terms, cloud computing means storing and accessing data and programs over the Internet instead of your computer’s hard drive. The cloud is just a metaphor for the Internet.
