Play Yahtzee Online (for FREE)

If you are from my generation, I am sure you played Yahtzee where the object of the game was to score the most points by rolling five dice to make certain combinations. Today there are numerous virtual (software and online) versions of Yahtzee available.

The best online version that I have come across, that is not saturated with too many ads that distracts from the playing of the game, is at Yahtzee.org

Take A Look At Inoreader As Your RSS Content Delivery Platform

Lately I have been exploring the cloud based RSS readers and was pretty much settled with Feedly until I came across Inoreader.

Inoreader

Inoreader is more than a simple RSS tool and is comparable (or better) than many of the installed software versions that are available. Built into Inoreader are tools such as rules, active searches, OPML subscriptions, importing, etc…  I personally use this reader to pull in content from the major news sites, tech blogs, software sites, and other sites that interest me. Since Inoreader is cloud based, your content is with you everywhere you go from all of the popular OS platforms (Windows, Android, iOS)…

There is a basic FREE version and paid (Plus and Professional) version of Inoreader. I have found the FREE version to provide everything I need; however, I am considering the paid (Plus) version due I think Inoreader is that good.

Most of us have a set routine when it comes to navigating the internet and do not venture far from that routine. When we do venture, we go to the search engines for answers. This is Awesome… Play, Create and Share Realistic Looking Jigsaw Puzzles Online

When I come across something that I classify as “awesome”, I want to share it with my readers right away! Some of you may like jigsaw puzzles and some of you may not; however, you have to take a look at this online (virtual) version of jigsaw puzzles called Jigsaw Planet (by Tibo Software).

Briefly, I am familiar with Tibo Software’s Jigsaw Puzzle software and highly recommend it if you are into this sort of thing. The online version that they have created is the best out there (in my opinion) in coming very close to the real jigsaw puzzles that we put together out of the box.

Tibo - Jigsaw Planet

To play (or try) the online version, simply visit jigsawplanet.com and select one of the puzzles they have available. This will give you an idea of what I am talking about; but, if you sign up for an account this opens the door for a whole lot more such as uploading your own photos to create your own jigsaw puzzles that can be shared with others (by simply emailing them a link to the puzzle you created).

Also, account holders can create puzzle albums and customize the puzzles to determine the shape, number of pieces, sharing options, etc…; and, to make things more challenging, you can create puzzles where the pieces can be rotated by picking up the pieces by left clicking the mouse and rotating the piece by right clicking the mouse. I think this feature of rotating the pieces is unheard in comparison to other online jigsaw puzzles I have tried.

Account holders also have the luxury that once you start a puzzle, the puzzle is automatically saved, no matter where you leave off. If you log off or leave the site, when you come back and log in, your puzzle is there where you left it (with the pieces intact). Another feature here is that the pieces look real and you can go full screen (without ads)… I think, once you get in there with this, you will be bookmarking this jigsaw app.

Use Jolicloud Drive To Manage Your Online Drive Accounts In One Place

Some of you may have heard of the Jolicloud OS that originally established its’ roots back in 2009 with the intent of using the infinite power of the cloud to pull all your online apps together in a very nice interface that could be accessed in your web browser. The original concept (back then) was actually ahead of its’ time.  Since that time, the Jolicloud OS has ceased to exist; however, the developers at Jolicloud have now given us Jolicloud Drive that runs in your web browser.

Jolicloud Drive

Jolicloud Drive is a new way to manage your online storage, from some of the most reputable sources out there (such as Dropbox Copy, Box, Google Drive); ALL, in one place. In my testing of Jolicloud Drive, I found that setting up the various online drive accounts you may have with Jolicloud Drive was very easy to do. I also found, compared to some of the other similar type of cloud apps out there, Jolicloud Drive is a fast loader that has a built in file viewer and has file sharing capability. The only drawback with the FREE account is that you cannot copy or move files from one drive account to the other; but, in my case I can live without that feature.

Also, if you do decide to use Jolicloud Drive, dig a little deeper in the interface and you will find Jolicloud Library (that is currently in beta) where you can pull in a variety of services (such as YouTube, Feedly, Flickr, etc..); ALL, in one place. I will be following Jolicloud on both of these online cloud app services…

Try this easy and powerful online photo editing application…

I have tried and tested numerous online photo (graphic) editors and the one that I am finding that is tried, tested and true is iPiccy… This editor appears to have been around awhile, with my last review being back in 2011 when it was in beta. Back then iPiccy sported over 30 creative editing tools and now it sports over 110 creative editing tools. Since then iPiccy has matured quite nicely.

What I really like about this editor is that it runs very nicely in the browser and has an exhaustive list of editing tools that is normally found in some of the higher end software based editors that you would normally install on your computer. Give it a try and I think you will be impressed. iPiccy is FREE and registration is not required (unless to want to take advantage of photo layers and the collages).

Some Neat Things You Can Do With Mighty Text

I recently featured Mighty Text here on the blog (link) that gives you the ability to text to-and-from your desktop computer, laptop, tablet, etc…

Since that article I have had a chance to explore Mighty Text a little further and discovered that you can “Send Web Pages, Files, Text Snippets, Maps from your computer to phone!” using the Google Chrome extension that I mentioned in the article.

Mighty Text

In Addition to Sending/Receiving Text, you can also perform the following with Might Text:

Send a web page from your computer to your phone

Just click the M icon, or right-click anywhere on the page and select Open this page on Phone.  Within a couple of seconds, the web page should load on your phone.

Send a file to your phone instantly (Web App)

No more emailing files to yourself! In the MightyText web app, select the Phone tab, and click the SEND FILE  button.

Send a Google Map to your phone instantly

Ever looking at a map that you need to send to your phone because you’re about to leave? When you are on a Google Maps page on your computer, click the M icon, and select “Open Map on Phone” and that map will load on your phone immediately.

Select some text from any web page, and send it to your phone

Grab any piece of text, right-click, and it goes directly to your phone

Some Weekend Fun – JSPuzzles Online Jigsaw Puzzles

I don’t know what the weather is like where you are located, but we woke up to windy and cold weather here. Was a nice day to hibernate and for me to find some type of online activity to relax, yet keep the brain exercised.

One site that I focused on, that did just that, was JSPuzzles – Online Jigsaw Puzzles. If you enjoy jigsaw puzzles, then I think will like this site. JSPuzzles is an online free jigsaw puzzles site, JSPuzzles does not require any installation or browser add-ons (like Flash or Java), and has been tested to run on all browser platforms.

When playing you simply drag the pieces around with your mouse pointer and when they fit they will auto click (with sound) into place. Each day they feature a new jigsaw puzzle and currently host a large library of puzzle themes to choose from.

 JSPuzzles - Online Jigsaw Puzzles

By registering for an account, at JSPuzzles (which is FREE), you can upload your own puzzles, save puzzles, and can officially compete with others for the highest score for putting a puzzle together. I couldn’t get over how fast others can put these puzzles together.  JSPuzzles – great site to keep the brain excercised.

Brother Creative Center – FREE Online Desktop Publishing Suite

I recently decided to go with a laser printer from Brother (Model: HL- 2270DW) to meet my printing needs and to save money on what I was spending for inkjet printer cartridges. While checking out their web site I came across an online desktop publishing suite, that they maintain, called Brother Creative Center that is completely FREE.

Their are two project sections to the Brother Creative Center: Business Center and Home Center. Both have numerous templates to get you started and both have the ability to save whatever projects you are working on. Really nice setup on something that you don’t hear much about…

Brother Creative Center - Business

Brother Creative Center - Home

Project Categories in the Business Center:  Brochures, Business Cards, Posters, Mailers, Calendars

Project Categories in the Home Center: Cards & Invitations, Activities, Educational, Party Kits, Calendars, Scrapbook Pages, Games

Add PDFescape To Your Arsenal Of Online Apps

PDFescape is a full featured online PDF editor and form filler that gives you the ability to Annotate PDF Documents, Create New PDF Forms, Edit PDF Files, Fill Out PDF Forms, Password Protect PDF Content, Share PDF Documents, Save & Print PDF Files and View PDF Files Online.

PDFescape

There are two features that jump out at me that I really like.  One is the ability to upload a form and fill it out (or modify the form for others to fill out); AND, two, you can upload a multiple page PDF file and move (or delete) pages.

Air Explorer – A Windows Based Software Application To Manage Your Online File Storage

Typically when we sign up for online file storage we are often given option to download software that will allow you to sync files locally with the online account. The problem with that, as in my case, I have multiple online accounts with multiple providers and do not want to burden down my computer with numerous software installs from these different providers.

To remedy this issue and to give full control in the management of your files in the cloud, at multiple (popular) providers, check out Air Explorer.

Air Explorer

Air Explorer is a Windows based program that appears to be relatively new (at least to me) that has the ability to connect to multiple online cloud servers. Air Explorer currently supports OneDrive, Google Drive, Box, Dropbox, Mega, Copy, Mediafire, Yandex, and WebDAV. When I tested Air Explorer it effortlessly connected to each of my online accounts and appeared to be quite fast.

Air Explorer Interface

What I like about the Air Explorer concept is that I can centrally and directly manage (move, copy, delete, share) my files and can even copy files from one provider to another provider. Air Explorer provides a dual paned interface that gives you the ability to easily perform the various file operations.

Features:

Optionally Air Explorer can encrypt your files when you upload them to the cloud

Sets up multiple accounts from the same server

You can synchronize folders between any cloud or your computer

Copy/Paste between cloud servers

Pause and continue uploads and downloads

Air Exlorer can share files

Centralize search of your files across all the clouds

A Large Collection of Playable AND Printable Word Search Games

Word Search Puzzles are a great way to relax, to exercise the mind and to learn new words. I happened, just by chance, to come across a very nice online word search site (called WordSearch1.com) that I thought was worth sharing with my readers.

What I particularly like about WordSearch1 is that you can go to a full screen mode where there are no distracting advertisements. All puzzles are printable and you can even create your own puzzles (which makes this a great tool for educators).

WordSearch1.com

WordSearch1.com has a large collection of pritable word search games. The front page will randomly generate a word search from a dictionary of words. Check out the definitions of those words by hovering over the word on the left side of the game screen. My randomly generated word search puzzles are a great way to learn new dictionary words. All words are Scrabble legal, so use them to improve your play in Scrabble, Words With Friends or Lexulous.

Quick Note – The Brain Fart Class Of Note Keeping

In the heavyweight class of note keeping apps, we have Evernote and OneNote that are exceptional in that they can perform a higher level of note keeping that are best suited when researching something or we want to store something of importance (for future reference).

In the lightweight class of note keeping we have Google Keep, that is exceptional in that you can keep notes in a manner for which we keep sticky notes (for grocery lists, to do lists, reminders, etc…), that are at a lower level of importance, but we feel necessary in order for us to exist.

Each of these heavy weight and light weight apps can be quickly accessed from all of our computing platforms (such as the Windows and the Android platforms); but, did you know that there is another class of note keeping called the “brain fart” class of notekeeping?

The brain fart a class of notekeeping is where you need to make notes quickly (on the fly), as they come to mind and are only around for the short term. This is the class of note keeping where another note keeping app called Quick Note comes into the picture.  Quick Note is like having a piece of paper and pencil with you at all times; and, in appearance, Quick Note looks just like the canary yellow ruled line notepads that we all have used at one time or another.

Quick Note

Quick Note is installed as a Google Chrome App that you can make a shortcut to so that your Quick Note notepad is easily and quickly accessible at all times. To use Quick Note you need to sign up for a diigo.com account so that you never lose your notes, as they are then synchronized (and stored) to your diigo.com account.

Quick Note is especially designed for lightweight note-taking. You can use it as a simple notepad,  scratchpad, clipboard, or to record todo lists.

★ Quick to add and edit ~ Add note in the app or from right-click menu

★ Quick to search ~ Instant search for all notes

★ Quick to access ~ One-click to access your notes

★ Sync to cloud and access your notes anywhere

Nimbus Screenshot – Probably The Best Browser Screen Capture Extension In The Google Chrome Store

As a blog writer it is necessary to have a good screen capture application available. Probably the best screen capture extension in the Google Chrome Store right now is Nimbus Screenshot: Capture and Annotate.

Nimbus Screenshot: Capture and Annotate

Nimbus Screenshot fits in well with ScribeFire, that is also a Chrome browser extension, that I use to draft my blog articles. With both of these extensions in place, all articles that I compose are performed directly in my browser (Google Chrome and/or Chromium) making my writing experience much more pleasant, efficient, and faster.

Nimbus Screenshot gives you the ability to capture a whole Web page (snipping tool), a part of it or the whole browser window. Built in is an optional editor, with a very user-friendly interface, where you can edit your captures, crop your images; AND, add text (or comments), lines, arrows, circles, rectangles, etc… When done you can save your screenshots to your Google Drive or Nimbus account. The free Nimbus account allows you to save up to 100 mbs of data a month.

As a side note, which I need to explore further; Nimbus also offers, in a addition to the Google Chrome browser extension, a screen capture app for the Windows, Android, and Firefox platforms.

Text Mechanic – An Online Suite Of Text Manipulation Tools

Text Mechanic is the tool I use to count the number of links I have listed at Bookmarks4Techs.com, where I currently have over 800 information technology related links listed.

Text Mechanic offers a broad array of tools that include:

  • Basic Text Tools
  • Obfuscation Tools
  • Randomization Tools
  • Combination / Permutation Tools
  • Numeration Tools

I encourage you to take a look at Text Mechanic, where  I am sure you will find a use for one of the tools that is listed (that ultimately can save you a great amount of time).

Free Online OCR Service To Convert Scanned PDF And Images To Editable Text

There are numerous PDF converters available that claim to convert PDF files to Microsoft Word or Excel documents. What typically occurs is that the converter turns the PDF into an image and then inserts the image into the Word or Excel document. The end result is that you still cannot edit the contents or text in the inserted file.

SOLUTION: Go to Online OCR , sign up for the FREE account, upload your PDF and the magic will happen (the file will actually be converted to a Word or Excel document that you can work with). Online OCR is an online optical character resolution service that does a fine job of extracting text from PDF and image files. Online OCR recently saved me from re-typing a four page PDF file where I needed to edit the text in the PDF. I uploaded the PDF to Online OCR and the service did an excellent job of converting the file to a readable and editable Microsoft Word file format.

Online OCR

OnlineOCR.net is a free web-based Optical Character Recognition software (OCR) that allows you to convert scanned PDF documents (including multipage files), faxes, photographs or digital camera captured images into editable and searchable electronic documents including Adobe PDF, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Rtf, Html and Txt.

OnlineOCR.net also allows and supports:

  • automatic image rotation
  • full-page deskew on images
  • creation black and white images from color and grayscale image file
  • retain non-text color regions for reinsertion into the output document

How To Bulk Edit In Pocket

I figured I would throw this out there for those of you who use the online service called Pocket.

Straight from the horses’ mouth, Pocket is a FREE online service that was developed to “help people save interesting articles, videos and more from the web for later enjoyment. Once saved to Pocket, the list of content is visible on any device — phone, tablet or computer. It can be viewed while waiting in line, on the couch, during commutes or travel — even offline”. It is sort of like a bookmarks manager that is a whole lot more. I am a big user of Pocket and rate it up there in my top five of productivity applications.

Over a period of time of using Pocket you will accumulate numerous bookmarked or saved items. One question that I had was this, “How do you bulk edit to remove multiple specific items from Pocket?”. In my case, I wanted to perform some housekeeping and wanted to remove some items and keep others. It would be time consuming to individually delete items that I did not want; especially, that I have hundreds of tagged and bookmarked items in my Pocket.

As I always have said, “if you can think it, it has been done and is out there somewhere”… I found on the Pocket site the following information:

Bulk Edit helps you perform actions on groups of items at once. These actions include: Archive, Favorite, Tag, and Delete.

How to Use Bulk Edit

Pocket - Bulk Edit

  1. Go to the Pocket Website.
  2. While viewing your List, hold the Control key (on Windows) or Command key (on Mac) and click on an item in your List. It will turn yellow, indicating that you have selected it and entered Bulk Edit mode.
  3. Select additional items by clicking on them while continuing to hold the Control or Command keys. You can also hold the Shift key and click on a second item to select everything in between.
  4. Once you’ve made your selection, click the action in the top toolbar that you wish to perform: Archive, Favorite, Delete, or Add Tag. If you’re in the Archive, the + button will be available to Re-add the selected items to your List.
  5. To leave Bulk Edit mode without making any changes, click the x button.

Google Keep Has Become One Of My Favorite Apps

If you are familiar with sticky notes, then you need to take a look at Google Keep. Google Keep is Google’s electronic version of sticky notes. With Google Keep you can create notes quickly and easily; AND, since it is a Google Application you can sync your notes using your Google account. This means you can get to your notes from virtually anywhere (i.e. Android Phone, Android Tablet, Android Wearable, and through the Google Chrome Web App on the internet).

I have thoroughly tested (and used) Google Keep since its’ inception; making it one of my favorite applications.

Google Keep

Initially when Google released Google Keep there was a lot of hype comparing it to the popular notekeeping app called Evernote. To me this was a inaccurate comparison. Evernote is at the more comprehensive level of note keeping, whereas Google Keep is at the  basic level of note keeping (such as grocery lists, check lists, products you want to remember, and the list goes on and on). The more I use Google Keep, the more I love it.

To get you started, Google Keep for the Google Chrome Browser is available [here] and Google Keep for the Android tablet and smartphone platforms is available [here]

Features:

Notes & lists in Google Keep – You can create notes on the go with Google Keep on your Android phone or tablet, on your Android wearable, and on your browser. You can pick colorful notes, make a check list, insert a picture and can create an archive to keep old notes

Reminders in Google Keep – You can add time and location reminders to new and existing notes in Google Keep.

Search & sync in Google Keep – Your notes are automatically synced to Google so you can view them on other devices and the web.

Adverputt Is A Casual Putt Putt Game That Embraces Hyper-Commercialism As An Aesthetic

I actually featured Advertputt on the blog in the past. Advertputt is a putt putt golf game that you play in your browser. It is actually like a demo page, by damp gnat, that they will setup for you (if you are a business), in the form of advergaming, as a marketing strategy.

Anyhow, the objective of Advertputt is to get all 12 holes in as few as putts as you can. Use the mouse to aim and adjust the power for each putt. All of the holes are sponsored.

Convert Your Favorite Videos From YouTube, Dailymotion, Vevo, and Clipfish to MP3, MP4 And More…

Looking for a way to convert your favorite music videos to MP3? Look no further…  I have been on the hunt for an online YouTube video to MP3 converter and found quite a few; HOWEVER, I finally settled with a FREE service called convert2mp3.net – Online Video Converter. This service is cloud based, which means everything can be done to make the conversion by using your web browser, which means “no software to install”. I think the things that impressed me the most with convert2mp3.net is the built in search component, how fast the conversion takes place and that the end result of the conversion is excellent; PLUS, unlike many of the other services I tried, there are no surprise pop-up ad pages (that looked pretty shady to me).

convert2mp3

Search for a video on YouTubeDailymotionVevo or Clipfish and copy & paste the link (URL) of the video in the first box, select the file type and press “convert”. Alternatively you can search for a Youtube video directly. Just enter the video title in the second form and press “search”

Google Cloud Print – Make Your Home And Work Printers Available To You From Anywhere

If you use the Google Chrome Browser, did you know there is a built in feature (called Cloud Print) that will allow you to set up your home (or work) based printer so that you can print to that printer from any web based device (such as your smartphone, tablet, Chromebook, etc…)? This is a really handy feature when you are out and about and would like to generate a printed hard-copy of a document. Once you have Google Cloud Print setup, Cloud Print gives you the ability to store and manage (keep a history) of your print jobs.

Google Cloud Print

Google Cloud Print works with all printers, but for the best printing experience we recommend that you use a Cloud Ready printer. You can connect a printer to your Google Cloud Print account in seconds, and immediately start printing to it.

cloud printerConnect a Cloud Ready printer

If your printer is Cloud Ready, follow your manufacturer’s provided instructions or see setup information for Cloud Ready printers.

classic printerConnect a classic printer

To connect your classic printer, enable the Google Cloud Print connector using a Windows or Mac computer that’s connected to the printer. You’ll need Google Chrome to be installed on the computer. If you’re using Windows XP, make sure you also have the Microsoft XML paper specification pack installed.

If you are like me, you most likely have a classic printer. The instructions to install a classic printer is as follows:

Once Google Chrome is installed, follow the steps below to enable the Google Cloud Print connector in Google Chrome.

  1. Turn your printer on.
  2. Log in to your user account on the Windows or Mac computer.
  3. Open Google Chrome.
  4. Click the Chrome menu Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.
  5. Select Settings.
  6. Click Show advanced settings.
  7. Scroll down to the “Google Cloud Print” section. Click Add printers.
  8. If prompted, sign in with your Google Account.

Google Chrome MP3 Player App – Trifling Trivial Worthless Rubbishy Player (TTWR player)

Once I get stuck on something, I am on it until I’ve exhausted it or I’m exhausted (which ever comes first). For some odd reason, I have been on a MP3 music kick; especially being focused on web based converters and web based players.

Today I happened across a Google Chrome App, called Trifling Trivial Worthless Rubbishy Player (TTWR player), that appears to be VERY NEW at the Google Chrome Store. What is unique about TTWR player is that does not pull music from the cloud (the internet); instead, it pulls the music from your local drive(s) using a web Google Chrome browser based user interface. The interface is minimalistic and easy to navigate. Simply browse for a music folder on your computer and TTWRP will begin playing your music. You can do a song loop, a song list loop or song list shuffle. Pretty cool idea for a browser based player that ultimately makes playing your locally stored music an easy task. I am interested in seeing this app being developed further and feel this is a definite plus for people who have Google Chromebooks (click here to see a Chromebook). Again, this appears to be a very new app (so expect a glitch or two).

Youtify – A Minimalistic Web Music Player

A recent post, I featured an online (cloud based) music player, called YouZeek, that streams music from YouTube. After posting this article, I started looking around to see if there were any other online YouTube music players and came across Youtify.

Youtify

It will be a matter of preference on whether to use YouZeek or Youtify. What I found is that YouZeek uses a more featured rich interface; whereas Youtify uses a more minimalistic interface or approach. I sort of liked the idea that I could easily navigate Youtify.

With Youtify you can stream music from YouTube, SoundCloud, and Official.fm… You can easily setup songs to play in a queue or playlist and can go full screen to watch a corresponding YouTube music video. It appears Youtify is designed only to be played from a browser and does not feature interfaces for other app platforms (such as Android and Apple).

About Youtify

Youtify was created by Per Thulin and Karl Tannergård and was launched on May 8, 2011. Youtify works as a skin for YouTube, SoundCloud and Official.fm, allowing for fast and easy search among music from international superstars as well as independent artists. With the integrated support for Flattr microdonations, Youtify has a unique way for fans to support artists.

If you know of any other online (cloud based) YouTube music players, I would be real interested in hearing about it…

Create Online Music Playlists And Share Them With Your Friends (Without Breaking Any Laws???)

Create Online Music Playlists And Share Them With Your Friends (Without Breaking Any Laws???)… That is what YOUZEEK is claiming on their “About” page.

YOUZEEK is a FREE online (cloud based) music application. With YOUZEEK, you can play music, discover or re-discover artists and bands, find music by country and by genre. According to their “About” page, YOUZEEK and its users, keep it legal, by not storing any copyrighted content and relies on legal sources such as YouTube.

YOUZEEK

I am still learning to navigate the YOUZEEK site, and do have some unanswered questions; however, what I am seeing is awesome (like making selections, creating playlists, watching the corresponding music videos, a music room to instantly share music with others, etc…). To get full benefit of YOUZEEK, it is best to set up an account (which is FREE).

YOUZEEK is available through your web browser (at youzeek.com); available as a Google Chrome App; and, available as an app on the following mobile platforms (Android, Amazon Kindle Fire, Apple iPhone, and Apple iPad).

How To Type the “Degree” Symbol From The Keyboard

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] How To Type the “Degree” Symbol From The Keyboard – I always like sharing personal experiences here on the blog to show that I don’t pull these things out of thin air. Recently I was generating a report where I was typing out weather conditions (such as outside temperature). As I continued doing this I would always type out the word “degree” for the temperature (i.e. 90 degrees). It was at that point I started wondering if there is a way to generate the degree symbol from the keyboard?

If you look at your keyboard you will not visually find the symbol or character reference for the “degree symbol.  What you have to do is use what is called “ALT CODES”…

If you hold down the Alt key and on the numeric keypad on the right of the keyboard, type 0176, or Alt+ 248, then when you release the Alt Key, a ° should be there.

If you are interested in learning some more ALT CODES, click on the ALT CODES REFERENCE SHEET below.

Periodically Change The Background Image On Your Computer (like every hour or every day)

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] Periodically Change The Background Image On Your Computer (like every hour or every day) – You may have figured out that in Windows 7 and Windows 8 you have the ability to setup a screensaver that will display your photos and images on your computer as a slideshow (when the computer goes idle for a preset period of time).  The problem with this is that it is limited in what you can do. Actually screensavers are really a thing of the past (that was designed to save your screen from burn in).

If you really want something that I consider an awesome piece of software, that is periodically updated (and improved), I encourage you to take a look at John’s Background Switcher (aka: JBS).

John’s Background Switcher

What does John’s Background Switcher do?  John best describes it as this: “JBS sits in your system tray (down by the clock) and changes your background at the time interval of your choosing. You tell it where to get pictures from and how to show them – maybe you just want to see one photo at a time or maybe you’d like to see a ‘Snapshot Scrapbook‘ of photos thrown across your desktop. It’s up to you and you never know what’s coming next!”

Take a look at John’s Background Switcher; and, that dull boring computer background will be transformed into a beautiful display that makes good use of your images (and photos) with the ability to pull images from various sources on the internet.  Get it here (for FREE)!

Shut Down Windows 8 With Shutdown8

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] Shut Down Windows 8 With Shutdown8 – After the release of Windows 8.1 Update, Microsoft did make things better for people to navigate around; however, shutting down the PC is still a hidden component (when you are on the desktop side of Windows 8).

To remedy this issue on my Windows 8 computer, I installed a little program called Shutdown8.

Shutdown8

Shutdown8 is available as an install file or a portable app. I went for the portable app version. Once you get it installed, pin the Shutdown8 executable file to your taskbar making it very handy to shutdown your PC.

Not only does Shutdown8 provide convenience in shutting down your PC, it also has the following features:

  • Shuts down/powers off computers at a specified time
  • Users can set the timer with the [+][-] keys or the mouse wheel button
  • Hibernate Mode: Saves the contents from the RAM to a hard disk and shuts down
  • Sleep Mode: Saves the state of the computer to RAM and enters a low-power mode
  • Works well with Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8

LIMITED TIME ONLY – Rack Up Free Gigabytes Of Online Storage Space

There are numerous online file storage options out there and the competition is fierce. I recently came across another NEW player in the field (called COPY), that offers (for FREE) an enticing 15 GB (or more) of online storage space to new accounts.

It doesn’t stop there… To celebrate the launch of COPY, they are offering 5 GB of additional space for every person that is referred to their service. The person who takes advantage of the referral also gets a 5 GB bonus on top of the 15 GB (for a total of 20 GB). From what I am reading, there is no limit to the number of referrals and you must install one of their apps (desktop or mobile) to take advantage of this opportunity in order to be credited for the 5 GB bonus.

To help me test this out; and, to help me add to my 15 GB amount, please click the link below to sign-up for your own 15 GB COPY account and install one of their apps (desktop or mobile). You should also receive the additional 5 GB bonus for signing up through this link. I have no idea how long this offer will last…

Cryptolocker comes in the door through social engineering. Create Your Own Personal StartPage With YOURLS

There are numerous online browser startpage and homepage launchers out there that allow you to collect your favorite websites in a customized and organized manner.

This past week I came across a newcomer on the block called YOURLS. What makes YOURLS special is that it is downright simple to use in that it allows you to to create a personal startpage (and sub pages) of your favorite URLs. If you visit a fixed set of favorite websites (facebook, google, work-related links, etc), on a frequent basis, then YOURLS cannot be beat. I have been using this past week and I can tell you, I love it…  It is easy to use, customizable and loads fast…  Once you establish an account, set up your own customized page(s); you then have access to your favorite links from anywhere on the planet.

Click the screenshot below to get a sampling of what my YOURLS startpage looks like (and I am not done yet):

image

Another feature that I really like is that there are browser extensions for Firefox and Chrome that gives you the ability to capture any site you visit and place the site’s url in any category on your Yourls page(s).

Why use YOURLS?
YOURLS saves you time every day that you use the internet, because you do not have to type in those same websites addresses over and over again …
YOURLS stores your favorite links in the cloud, so that you can access them from any browser, device or location
YOURLS let’s you discover new links based on your interests and let’s you share your favorite links with your friends through social media

Who should use YOURLS?

– Every person who uses the internet daily to visit a fixed set of favorite websites (facebook, google, work-related links, etc)
– Organizations like schools, libraries or businesses who own multiple PC’s and want to configure a browser startpage on all devices
