Geek Squeaks #2015-12 @ What’s On My PC (Featuring: Apparently We Can Re-Install Windows 10 Without A Product Key — and MORE)

Very IMPORTANT Information About The Windows 10 Product Key – Recently I posted information about using third party software to find your Windows 10 product key in the event you would need to reinstall Windows 10.  Well, now I am finding, based on other information, the product key may not be required at all.  Actually, I am pretty confused at this point and don’t have a test environment to play this out (read more below).

Windows 10 Product Key

PCWorld posted an article “Why you can’t find your product key after upgrading to Windows 10” that goes on to tell you that using these party utilities to find the product key will not work; that these utilities only generate or find generic product keys; and that Microsoft has moved away from the product key model and now uses what is called “digital entitlement”. According to PCWorld,

“Once activated, a digital entitlement for your PC’s hardware is created in the Windows 10 activation service. This entitlement can be used by the same PC again for re-activation of the same Edition of Windows 10 in the future.”

Apparently we can re-install Windows 10 on our upgraded PC’s and not worry about product keys. One thing I did notice in the article is that digital entitlement is dependent on your hardware configuration at the time you upgraded to Windows 10. Make significant changes from that original hardware configuration (such as installing a new motherboard) and you will be calling Microsoft for re-activation.

(Android) Microsoft OneNote Update Includes  “Floatie” – Straight from the Microsoft-News.com site:  “Microsoft has recently released a new update for the official OneNote app for Android. The latest update packs a pretty handy feature — the feature, dubbed as “Floatie” is kind of like Facebook Messenger’s chat heads for notes. The feature allows users to pin their notes, which are accessible pretty easily — clicking on the floating OneDrive icon would let them edit notes, and use most of the features of OneDrive without even opening the app” …

If you are a blogger, editor, or graphic designer a clipboard manager is a must-have tool. I have added Clipboard Master to the Download page under the FREE SOFTWARE swarm…

Exciting News! S10 Password Vault Now Available On Google Play (as an Android App)

You may have noticed on yesterday’s Geek Squeak I posted “A Quick Study On The Anatomy Of A Good Password” that featured the S10 Password Vault. I have tested and tried numerous password managers and in my humble opinion, S10 Password Vault is the best out there. You don’t hear much about it, due the developer himself is very humble.

When I started using S10 and found out how good it was I was hoping that there was an Android version available that I could download to my Android devices (smartphone and tablet). At that time, S10 was not available at the Google Play Store; however, the developer had a downloadable Android version available that required a manual install of an .apk file. I contacted the developer, expressed my gratitude for S10, and encouraged him to get the Android version of the S10 Password Vault onto Google Play Store (where the app would gain more exposure and the install process would be more automated).

Cover art

GREAT NEWS! The developer contacted me today and informed me that S10 is now available on Google Play – CLICK HERE – (and is also available for iPhone/iPad in the App Store). The developer also advised that S10 Password Vault has been upgraded, as well.

I know many people are going with the online password managers; however, my “words of wisdom” is to go with a software version such as S10 where you know your data is much safer and more manageable; and you know for sure where your data is located.

To get you started with S10 Password Vault, visit the main website – CLICK HERE – so that you can see how feature enriched this software is; YET, simplistic.  I have been using it for years and would be totally lost without it. S10 Password Vault can either be installed on your computer or be downloaded as a portable app.

A big THANK YOU to the developer of S10 Password Vault…

Geek Squeaks #2015-11 @ What’s On My PC (Featuring: A Quick Study On The Anatomy Of A Good Password and MORE)

A Quick Study On The Anatomy Of A Good Password – I plucked the information below from my work security notices about passwords and thought it would be good to share with my readers. It pretty much sums it up nicely about the creation and the composition of a good password.

Did you know the longer the password, the harder it is to crack? Consider a 12-character password or longer. Things to avoid: Names, places, dictionary words. Mix it up. Use variations on capitalization, spelling, numbers, and punctuation. Most importantly, don’t save passwords or use “remember me” especially on public computers.  Make sure your computer is secure.  Never give your password out to anyone and don’t post your password in plain sight.

From my experience I have found that people that use computers (and other devices) on the personal level (such as at home) use very weak passwords, never change them and are very liberal on who has access to those passwords. To solve this problem, I highly recommend that you use a password manager such as S10 Password Vault that will help you manage, organize, store and generate your passwords.

Have you ever tried going offline for days at a time? I don’t know if I could detach myself from my devices. I am serious, I have never tried it. Found this blog post at the Huffington Post “Why You Need To Go Offline For A Week” where the author explains that “you go completely offline (no internet allowed at all) and off grid (so no phone calls, texts etc.) to have a complete break from technology and communication with anyone you’re not physically with”. I encourage you to read this article to see his end results… I definitely need to go offline, get off the grid and go to hermit land.

Geek Squeaks #2015-10 @ What’s On My PC (Featuring: A Back Door Way To Get The Windows 10 Upgrade Immediately and MORE)

How To Get The Windows 10 Upgrade Immediately – There is always a back door way… The Windows Club in their article, “When will I get Windows 10? We’re validating Windows 10 for your PC …” explains about a little known registry edit that will jump start the installation. I do recommend that if you edit the registry to always make a backup of the registry and if you never have edited the registry before, you may want to wait for your Windows 10 upgrade or download (and run) the media creation tool

A Take On The Windows 10 Groove Music App – You may have noticed that when you went to play a music (or sound) file in Windows 10 you were greeted with something different (than Windows Media Player), called Groove Music. Personally, I do not think this a bad thing; however, when change occurs, especially in the computer world, people threaten to jump off the local bridge. To keep you from doing just that (jumping off a bridge), make sure you go to the How To Geek and learn “How to Add and Organize Music on Windows 10 Using the Groove Music App“…

Fujikam FI-361 HD, Wifi, Video Monitoring Camera (surveillance and security) – Typically when I see these types of cameras that allow you to monitor your personal property, home, pets, etc… from your Smart Phone, Tablet, or PC, I usually find a mixed bag of comments that drive the customer reviews down. The Fujikam FI-361 is one of those exceptions where the customer reviews has kept this camera at a near 5 star rating and is currently rated as a number one best seller at Amazon. Geek Squeaks #2015-9 @ What’s On My PC (Featuring: How To Make A Batch File Shortcut To Open Multiple Web Pages At Once and MORE)

How To Make A Batch File Shortcut To Open Multiple Web Pages At Once – Many non-technical personality type folks shy away when they hear terms such as batch file. As a matter of fact it has been awhile since I have heard anyone use the term until I came across The Windows Club article on how to “Create single desktop shortcut to open multiple web pages in Windows“…  The article goes on to tell you how to use notepad in Windows to create a batch file shortcut that will enable you to click on the shortcut (preferably from the desktop level) and launch multiple web sites in your browser in separate tabs. A fast way to get up and running quickly. There are other options to doing the same thing (within today’s modern browsers); but, I found this article interesting due I haven’t heard the use of batch files for awhile. Nice tip (and easy) from The Windows Club…

Verizon Is Shaking Up On How You Pay For Your Wireless Service – One of the hot topics out there right now is the wireless service providers making changes on how we end up paying for those expensive smartphones in our pockets. T-Mobile pretty much set the stage for all of this and the others are offering competitive plans and options. Verizon is no exception… Yahoo Tech has an article posted announcing that Verizon kills off service contracts, smartphone subsidies … In the end I this may drive the competition of drop the high pricing on these phones.

REMINDER – Use ProduKey To Identify Your Windows 10 Product KeyProduKey (by NirSoft) is a available for FREE (as a full install or portable app). The description at the NirSoft site indicates the software will display the key for Windows (including Windows 7 and Windows Vista). Does not indicate Windows 10; however, I can attest that it will work for Windows 10, as well. The Windows 10 product key is a key you need to keep (very important) in the event you need to re-install Windows 10.

Geek Squeaks #2015-7 @ What’s On My PC (How To Regain Disk Space After Your Windows 10 Installation and MORE)

Regain Disk Space After Your Windows 10 Installation – As typical in past installations of Windows upgrades; Windows will store the old windows file in a folder called Window.old. The type of files in this folder depends on your computer and can amount to gigabytes in the double figures. After you’ve used Windows 10 for a while—for example, one or two weeks—and you’re confident that your files and settings are back to where you want them to be, you can safely reclaim disk space by using Disk Cleanup to delete the Windows.old folder. To actually perform the steps to do this, I found good instruction at betanews (Clean up after a Windows 10 upgrade and regain loads of disk space)…

Geek Squeaks #2015-6 @ What’s On My PC (Featuring – Did You Know Windows 10 Is Sharing Your Computer?)

Windows 10 Is Sharing Your Computer By Default – I found this article on PCWorld (How to stop Windows 10 from using your PC’s bandwidth to update strangers’ systems) that explains how Microsoft is a using a new peer-to-peer (P2P) delivery update mechanism (in Windows 10) that turns your Windows 10 PC (by default) into a server for distributing updates to other machines.

Geek Squeaks #2015-4 @ What’s On My PC (Featuring My Take On Windows 10 and MORE…)

My Take On Windows 10 – I intentionally did not test or try any of the Windows 10 insider beta (test) versions, prior to the public release. I wanted to see what my first impression would be.

My first impression is this — The Windows 10 upgrade installation on my Windows 7 based notebook computer (older Toshiba) took approximately 45 minutes. During the install it booted 3 times and during each time a screen appeared with a circle in the middle of the screen indicating at what point the installation was at. It was a straight forward and nothing fancy installation (which is the way it should be…).

After the install was completed I was taken straight to the desktop and there it was; the new Start Menu. Folks, in comparison to Windows 8; Windows 10 is like a hybrid between Windows 7 and Windows 8. There are some changes, but they are changes for the bettter. I was up and running and navigating around with no issue. This old Toshiba was as if a breath of fresh air had been blown into it. I can’t wait to the complete the installation on my main desktop computer. My final take on this is, if you have opportunity to upgrade to Windows 10, I recommend that you do it.

Geek Squeaks #2015-3 @ What’s On My PC (Featuring Differences Between Windows 8 and Windows 10 and MORE)

The Differences Between Windows 8 and Windows 10 – I currently have my Windows 8.1 desktop and an older Windows 7 laptop. What surprised me was my Windows 10 upgrade hit the laptop first. I am still waiting for the upgrade for the desktop to kick in. I did complete the upgrade on the laptop and I must say (as first impression) I found Windows 10 quite comfortable to navigate and use; HOWEVER, there are differences between what I was accustomed to in Windows 8 (and Windows 7).

To get a good read on the differences, I suggest you read this article at Tech Advisor — “Windows 8 vs Windows 10 comparison: What’s the difference between Windows 10 and Windows 8? New features in Windows 10, and why you should upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 10” …

Windows 10

A Windows Tech Toolbox Repair Utility – If you find yourself in a situation where you know that the Windows operating system has been crippled, you may want to give Windows Repair a try. I pretty much has used this as a last resort tool in instances where everything else has failed. I have had good luck with this tool in those instances and yes this program is compatible with Windows 10. I have added this utility to the portable apps swarm on the downloads page.

Bookmark This Online File Converter – I recently needed a quick way to perform a file conversion from one file format to another. Instead of having to find and download software, and factoring in the learning curve, I use an online converter called CloudConvert that supports the conversion between more than 200 different audio, video, document, ebook, archive, image, spreadsheet and presentation formats.

WinScan2PDF – I just added this little program to the downloads page under the Portable Apps swarm. WinScan2PDF is a very small (~40k) and portable program that allows you to scan documents and save them on your computer as a PDF by using any installed scanner. I currently carry a copy of this on my flash drive and have used it on many occasions.

Drift Innovation Stealth 2 Action Camera – Check this out. These mini-cameras continue to fascinate me and the cost is reasonable; especially, for  Full HD – 1080p at 30fps & 720p at 60fps…  This little beast has a 300 Degree Rotatable Lens which allows you to mount the camera at an angle. Other features: W i-Fi Connectivity – Get full control of the camera using your mobile device Long life battery – 1500 mAh battery giving you 3 hours of recording time… @Amazon

Geek Squeaks #2015-1 @ What’s On My PC

Geek Squeaks is back… – After taking a break from posting Geek Squeaks, I am thinking of bringing it back. Geek Squeaks is a name I came up with as an identifier to my readers that when you see a Geek Squeaks’ post it is a “quick read” compilation of tech news, software, apps and anything for that matter that I think is worth a squeak from an old geek. Geek Squeaks’ are random posts that are not set to any timeline or schedule.

Free Desktop Timer – Free Desktop Timer is a simple utility that allows you to create multiple timers on your desktop. This is one of those kinds of things that you might not even know you need until you try it.

Added Links To The “Software & Apps” Swarm – If you click on the downloads tab at the top of the blog you will see links to Software & Apps sites, FREE Software, Portable Apps, Android Apps and Cloud Computing Apps. I just added some additional sites to the Software & Apps swarm that will take you to reputable software sites. All links and software in each of the swarms are tried, true and tested…  I want to publish only the best.

Keep An Eye On This Smartphone – With the OnePlus 2, we have something bold to say. We believe that great products come from great ideas, not multi-million dollar marketing campaigns. We believe “that’s just the way things are” is almost always the wrong answer. Most of all, we believe that great things should be shared. This is the OnePlus 2.

Helpful Windows 10 Resources From The “What’s On My PC” Tech Blog

Windows 10 will start rolling out on July 29, 2015. The strategy, from what I understand, will be to release the upgrade in waves; which, indicates to me your upgrade may not hit your PC for awhile.

In the meantime, to prep everyone, I have been posting information (here and there) about Windows 10 since the beginning of June. To bring this all together I have listed the articles that I have posted (from the most recent to oldest) as a quick reference resource in an effort to help you with the upgrade process and to learn more about Windows 10.

Reserve Your FREE Upgrade To Windows 10 Now

Confirmed – Windows 10 Availability Date Is July 29, 2015

I have been following Windows 10 since its’ early development, and based on Microsoft’s history of good and bad operating system releases, Windows 10 is an operating system that Microsoft knows that they have to get right.  I am pretty excited about this release myself and can’t wait to try it…  If you are in a situation where you are not eligible for the upgrade and/or you are building a PC, here is a link to buy Windows 10 at Amazon — CLICK HERE

What Happens Next After You Reserve Your Copy Of Windows 10

Many of you have taken advantage of the offer from Microsoft by reserving your FREE upgrade to Windows 10. If you are not aware of the offer, please know that you are eligible for the FREE upgrade if you are running Microsoft Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

To take advantage of the offer, look for the Microsoft Windows 8 logo that should have magically appeared in your system tray (bottom right corner of your screen). You would be surprised of how many folks I have talked to about this and were totally unaware that the logo was present. The graphic below (minus the “Windows 10” text) is an example of the logo you should be looking for.

This logo appeared through the Windows update service. If you click on the logo you can reserve your copy of Windows 10 (that is scheduled for release on July 29, 2013) and you can confirm that your computer is compatible with Windows 10. This is a full version of Windows 10 and you have up to a year to take advantage of this offer. After the year is up, you will be required to purchase Windows 10 (which, last I looked would be in the ballpark of $120).

Now that you have reserved your copy of Windows 10, you are probably wondering what happens next?

From the time you reserve your copy and when your upgrade is ready, the files needed to perform the upgrade will be downloaded to your computer. You most likely will not even notice this occurring. Microsoft, through their normal update stream is in essence trickling the Windows 10 install files to your computer and setting the stage for the final installation that will occur after July 29, 2015.

I do recommend, prior to this upgrade, that you perform (at the minimum) a backup of your personal files (such as documents, pictures, videos, music, etc…) and to be completely safe perform an image backup of your computer’s hard disk (using software such as AOMEI or Macrium Reflect).

Once the stage has been set, you will get a notification or prompt to launch your upgrade. You can install right away or opt to wait. I know many of us in the tech field opt to never install a fresh release of an OS, but my thoughts on this is that Microsoft must be pretty sure of themselves on this since it will be available to millions and millions of people and are strongly encouraging people to upgrade. I am sure there will be glitches, due to the variables involved (especially with home based computer systems).

After you initiate the launch of the upgrade, it is expected take an hour or more for the upgrade to complete.

Good luck with this…  I would really be interested in hearing stories about how your Windows 10 upgrade experience went.

An “Ad Free” Battery Optimizer App For Your Android Smartphone

When I saw Intel and McAfee together, as an app logo, it caught my attention. What they have developed is called the Intel Security Battery Optimizer. I know there are some really nice battery optimizer apps out there, but what has drawn my attention to this one is that it works in an ad free environment and it appears that, based on the number of reviews, it is relatively new.

Intel Security Battery Optimizer

Intel Security Battery Optimizer is an All-in-one battery energy boosting and power management tool for Android smartphone and tablets. Saves battery life, provides real-time power usage information, alerts you when battery is low or time to charge battery, extends call time, and helps you deal with various battery wasting situations with ease.

✔ Control Your Device Battery Usage

▪Identifies battery draining apps and allows you to save battery life by stopping them

▪Shuts off all non-emergency functions when battery is critically low so you can take emergency calls and messages

✔ Accurate Energy Consumption Information

▪Provides you with real-time battery usage information

▪Gives accurate battery time estimation saved by stopping an app

▪Offers accurate energy rating of apps

✔ Quick Access & Easy Management

Awesome Tech Sites – Awesome Tech People

If you are a information technology junkie, as I am, you need to routinely visit the following sites to stay abreast of the constant change in the world of information technology. Each of these resources can be had by clicking on any of the tabs at the top of the What’s On My PC blog. What you will find in this mix is Awesome Tech Sites — Awesome Tech People …

Bookmarks4Techs – This is a conglomeration of links that I personally maintain that are all tech oriented.  I am constantly adding to the listing. This has picked up in popularity and I am now receiving links from site developers asking that their sites be listed.

GEGeek – My opinion! If you are into information technology as a student or work IT for a living, GEGeek is top gun when it comes to resources. What is unique here is that Mike works in IT to make a living; YET, has the capacity, time and passion to share his knowledge. On top of this, he also maintains the GEGeek Tech Toolkit that is the most comprehensive collection of tech tools you will ever come across. No need to search the net for this stuff, Mike has done the hard work for you.  Awesome site — Awesome guy!

Downloads – One of my passions is software, apps, portable apps, browser add-ons, etc… Recently I changed up the Downloads page to create what I am calling swarms of software, apps, etc… that will continue to grow. The focus is quality; not quantity. To make it to a swarm the software has be known, has to be good; and, must demonstrate that it will be around for awhile (through continued development). You can submit recommendations of software that you think should be added to the swarm and I will consider it based on the criteria, as indicated.

Tech News – I was recently on the hunt for a good news resource and went back to my blogging roots. Click on the Tech News tab and you will be redirected to Bill Mullins’ Weblog – Tech Thoughts. Bill on every Monday, Wednesday and Friday will post an edition of tech news that he has scoured the internet for. I know Bill and I know he is very devoted to anything that he does. Awesome site — Awesome Guy!

Tech Toys – This is a site that I put together that is a direct link to Amazon. The objective is to give you a resource to search and look around for tech toys (computers, hardware, software, smartphones, tablets, etc…). I often use it to get a baseline pricing on items.

Archives – If you click on the Archives tab this will take you to a page that is every posting I have ever made at What’s On My PC that I want to share with you.

I have been blogging since July 2008.  Like Mike (at GEGeek), Bill (at Tech Thoughts), Steve (at TCAT Shelbyville), and Tech Paul (at Tech-for Everyone); we all have a passion for information technology AND from that passion we enjoy sharing information with the world.

For example, Lenovo has available for review (and download) a FREE 17 page content (actually 23 pages) PDF manual “Starting To Use Windows 10” that will help you get up and running pretty quickly. If you have not been following Windows 10, you may want to take a look at this.

A Mid-Range Inexpensive Smartphone By ASUS

ASUS has become a well known product name for desktop computers; BUT, did you know that they make an Android Smartphone that is probably one of the best mid-range inexpensive phones out there. It is called the ASUS ZenFone

ASUS ZenFone 2

Based on the excellent customer reviews at Amazon, this phone is a hit. I am sure the price point on this phone is a main factor; especially, when you start comparing this phone with some of the other more expensive phones (such as the Samsung S6 or Apple’s iPhones). This phone comes unlocked and is compatible with the GSM Networks including AT&T, T-Mobile and cellular network providers utilizing GSM network such as: Straight Talk, Walmart Family Mobile, MetroPCS, Simple Mobile, Brightspot, Net10, h20 Wireless, and Cricket Wireless. I encourage you take a look at the reviews and I think you will agree this phone is a phone to consider. From what I have read the processing power is right up there, but the camera is not up to what maybe the Samsung S6 is…

The ASUS ZenPhone is definitely a phone to consider purchasing straight out to reduce your monthly cell bill where most people are paying for their phone a bit at a time each month.

Features At A Glance:

  • Unlocked, No Carrier Contract required. 4G/LTE Ready
  • Android 5.0 – Lollipop
  • 5.5″, FullHD 1920×1080 IPS
  • Available in 2GB or 4GB RAM
  • Dual SIM slots, Dual Active phone lines
  • Intel Atom Quad Core (1.8 or 2.3GHz) with OpenGL 3.0 support
  • 16GB or 64GB onboard storage
  • 5GB lifetime ASUS WebStorage
  • MicroSD card slot (up to 64 GB)
  • Lastest WLAN 802.11a/b/g/n/ac

Cool Software To Reduce The Glare Off Of Your Screen (in the evening)

I use the word “cool”, which may be out of date terminology in today’s generation; but, this is the only way to describe Sunset Screen… This software (easy to use – portable version available) will help you with reducing eye strain, sleep better, and wind down in the evening before bed.

SunsetScreen is a free app for Windows which helps take the glare off your your screen in the evening. Scientific research has shown that melatonin – the chemical the brain makes late in the day – is reduced when exposed to blue light. By tempering this blue light, it becomes easier to wind down properly at night, and thus have a more restful sleep.

Features include:

  • Set the sunset time precisely.
  • Set the sunrise time too.
  • Choose by colour temperature or by HSB for a precise colour.
  • Transition from one phase to the other gradually.
  • Automatically resides in the tray so it keeps out of your way.
  • Loads automatically at Windows startup if you wish.
  • Instantly turn off SunsetScreen if you need to do colour sensitive work.
  • Choose from a range of presets, and reset to default if things go wonky.
  • Small, fast, elegant and easy to use interface in less than a megabyte.
  • Isn’t patent pending unlike something beginning with ‘F’ 😉

Get The Latest (and Best Selection) Of Tech News

Seven years ago this month I started the “What’s On My PC” blog at WordPress. I have met numerous individuals and have seen numerous blogs come and go. To me, it has become a hobby and a way for me to keep up with my passion for information technology.  Blogging has taught me discipline; has improved my writing skills; and, pushes me to keep up with the latest in information technology.

My start with blogging can be attributed to the support and guidance from Bill Mullins’ at Tech Thoughts and Tech Paul at Tech-for Everyone. These guys are true bloggers and still maintain their blogs. Their level of expertise and knowledge of information technology is a level that is very admirable. I can’t say “Thank You” enough to these guys…

To celebrate my 7 years, you will notice that at the top of the blog you will see a tab labelled “Tech News”. Effective today, if you click on that tab you will be redirected to Bill Mullins’ site (Tech Thoughts) where one of his specialties is aggregating technology news (tagged as Tech Thoughts – Net News). What I have found is that we are saturated on a daily basis with information technology news, to the point you can lose a sense of it all and you miss out on the important stuff. With Bill’s insight and sixth sense for technology, he does the legwork for us and provides a good read on current tech news, trends, security, software; AND, even some off topic news.

The Floating Android Launcher Called Rovers

What I like about the Android platform is that you can customize your device to give it an identity of its own. I have always loved menu launchers and many of the app launchers available for the android platform gives you that freedom to customize your device (smartphone or tablet) to your liking.

A launcher that I want to share with you, that has been a hit with me, is the completely customizable app launcher called Rovers, The Floating Launcher. The name of the app pretty much explains that it is a floating “menu” or app launcher that is there when you need it and not there when you don’t need it (and if you are a multi-tasker, this app is for you).

To see Rovers in action, watch the video below:

Rovers will always be there with you, to create the PERFECT multitask utility on Android. With Rovers, you’ll always just one-click away from your favorite apps, shortcuts and actions.

Rovers as a floating launcher:

• Your favorite applications

• Android Shortcuts

• Rovers Actions (special one-click add-ons)

• Folders

Make Rovers your own by:

✓ Choose an icon for each Rover

✓ Change Rover’s color

✓ Organize your Rovers in Folders

✓ Hide the Floating Trigger on the notification panel

✓ Open Rovers Horizontally/Vertically

✓ ‘Edit-Mode’ by long press a Rover

From what I have researched, the developer, “in a nutshell”, lost track of who was legal and who was not; and, the only way to remedy the issue was to perform an audit to collect data to determine what keys are still alive, and who are they used by. If you are a true pirate, the furthest you will get is a year’s worth of Malwarebytes. To read a good article about this CLICK HERE

What the end user of Malwarebytes will see, whether you are a pirate of not, is the following message:

Select the option below (in your Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium product) that describes how you originally received your Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro or Premium license. We’ll assign you a new key, and you’ll be good to go.

  1. I’m not sure where I got my key, or I downloaded it from the Internet. (Select this option and we will issue you a brand-new key with 12 free months of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium.)

  2. I purchased my key. (Select this option and we will issue you a replacement key with the same license to Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as your original key.)

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is an industry-leading scanner that detects and removes worms, Trojans, rootkits, rogues, spyware, and other dangerous malware from your home PC. There is a FREE version and a paid premium version. The FREE version does not perform background scanning; whereas, the premium version (with background scanning and more features) is ready and alert at all times.

New Version of DNS Jumper (V2.0)

Typically, changing your DNS on your computer requires configuration changes, that are actually pretty easy to do; however, most people will not attempt those changes for fear of causing problems with their PCs. Another factor to all of this is knowing what DNS servers to use and which ones are safe (which would require some research on your part).

Recently I posted an article about a utility called DNS Jumper that is engineered to change your DNS setting for you and if you are not satisfied with those changes you simply revert back to the defaults. When it comes to changing your DNS, all the work has been done for you with this utility.

Today I noticed that a new version of DNS Jumper is out there that is deserving of attention. This little utility (which is portable) has evolved into a very attractive and powerful tool where you can manually select a free DNS Service or you can let DNS Jumper find the fastest DNS service for you.

DNS Jumper 2.0

DNS Jumper 2.0

DNS – or domain name system – is the protocol on the internet that turns human-comprehensible website names such as sordum.org into addresses understandable by machines.(machine-readable “IP addresses”) , In some cases, you can increase the browsing speed or improve your security by replacing the DNS provided by your provider , DNS Jumper is a tool which makes it easy for you.

How To Setup The NEW “Undo Send” Option In Gmail

Google recently added an optional setting in Gmail that will allow you to auto delay sending an email, for a period of 5-10-20 or 30 seconds, so that if you have second thoughts (after hitting “send”) you can retract or undo the sending process. This sort of option had been available through the Google Labs, but many people are not familiar with the labs’ options or add-ons; therefore, Google has made this a permanently embedded option in the Gmail settings.

To get to the undo settings, click on the cog wheel on the top right side of your Gmail and click on “Settings”. Under the “General” tab, you will find “Undo Send” (see screenshot below). Click the box next to “Enable Undo Send”; then select the amount of time for the “Send cancellation period”. After you have made your changes, scroll down and click on “Save Changes”.

Gmail - Undo Settings

Also, now that you know how to get into the Gmail settings, go back into the settings you will find a tab that is labelled “Labs”. Some pretty neat add-ons are available there.

Using XP or Vista? Appears There Is A Workaround Available For You To Get A FREE Windows 10 Upgrade

Found this at Lifehacker, that may be of interest to you XP and Vista users. If you install the Windows 10 Preview on your Windows XP or Vista computer, establish a valid Microsoft account, you will then be eligible for the Windows 10 upgrade (for FREE).

As Microsoft details on its Windows blog, if you’re running the Windows 10 Technical Preview as part of the Windows Insider Program, and you have a valid Microsoft account connected to your installation, you’ll be upgraded to Windows 10 for free. If you’re already in the program, future builds will prompt you to connect your Microsoft account if you haven’t already done so.

While this is good news for those on the preview builds, it’s also a handy workaround for anyone who might be getting left behind when the free upgrades start rolling out. — source: Lifehacker

If interested in exploring the option of installing the Windows 10 preview, Lifehacker also can help you out with instructions on performing the installation, as well — CLICK HERE

Of course, make sure your computer meets the Windows 10 system requirements. Not sure?  CLICK HERE to get those requirements.

A Brief “How To” On Replacing The Power Supply In Your Computer

One of the most popular articles, at What’s On My PC, is about pinpointing whether a power supply is failing or not (Symptoms of a Failing Computer Power Supply)… What the article does not get into, is how to remove the power supply and replace it. If you examine the picture below of a computer power supply, it appears from all the wiring, it is a complex process; but, in reality it is not.

Today, I came across a brief “how to” on replacing the power supply in your computer at PCWorld. The article describes very nicely the two factors involved:

How Remove Your Old PC Power Supply

AND

How To Replace Your PC Power Supply

How to replace a power supply...

I encourage you to take a minute or two to review the article and I think you will agree that removing and replacing a power supply is not very difficult. If you are looking for a replacement power supply click here

Use StreamWriter To Record Music From Various Internet Radio Stations

Found an interesting FREE piece of software, called StreamWriter, that records music broadcasted by internet radio stations. There are other recorders out there; but, if you read the feature list below you will see that StreamWriter sets itself apart from other recorders. I also like the idea that you can download a portable version of StreamWriter, which is a great way to test and try the software, without performing an installation. In my testing I was impressed with the recordings (which can be done in tandem from various sources), the wishlist feature (that will look for, wait and record a specific song), and the ability to edit out sections of any MP3 you download.

StreamWriter

Feature List:

  • Record as many streams as you want at the same time (MP3/AAC)
  • Automatically record a wishlist’s song when it’s playing on a stream
  • Player for streams and recorded files
  • Track splitting with silence detection
  • Function for manual cutting of saved titles
  • Tracks are named by a given pattern
  • Short songs (ads) can be skipped
  • Writing of tags to recorded files
  • Script-based postprocessing
  • Applying of effects to recorded songs (SoX)
  • Integration of different audio encoders
  • Scheduled recordings
  • Stream browser
  • Multilingual
  • Can be installed or used in portable mode

…and much more!

Microsoft’s Malware Center Flags The Older Versions Of The “Ask Toolbar” As Malware

I have been on numerous computers over the years and the Ask Toolbar always seems to find a way (usually through trickery) to install itself on people’s computers. Well, there is some good news and it is from Microsoft…

Microsoft recently flagged the older versions of the Ask Toolbar and is officially considering it malware. As a matter of fact, to validate this point, Windows Defender for Windows 8.1, or Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 7 and Windows Vista have been engineered to detect the older versions of the Ask Toolbar and remove it.

I don’t know if a lesson has been learned here or not, by the makers of the Ask Toolbar; but, Microsoft’s Malware Protection Center states, “The latest version of this application is not detected by our objective criteria, and is not considered unwanted software”… So, what I get from this is that the new version is ok and the old version is not.

The older version, that I have personally seen on many computers, will hijack your browser and restrict or limit your control over your search provider. I have to wonder if Microsoft became aggressive with this due to the Ask Toolbar, in essence, messing with Microsoft’s own search engine (called Bing).

Either way, I recommend that you avoid installing it (or any toolbar) and be careful when installing any software that allows other third party software to piggy back its’ way onto your computer (see example below of how the Ask Toolbar is along for the ride when Java is updated and installed — unless you uncheck it).

Ask Toolbar with Java

Also, I am not a real advocate of Microsoft Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials. Both, at present, are not rated very well. You may want to consider Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium … I prefer the premium version (which has full time scanning) over the free version (which does not have full-time scanning).

Nice Brief Review On What Will Be New (To You) In Windows 10

As many of you are aware, Microsoft will be shoveling out Windows 10 to Windows 7 and Windows 8 user’s on July 29, 2015. I am sure many of you (including myself) have not experienced Windows 10. As with any new operating system, there will be challenges and I know many are gun shy due to the unpleasant transition that many experienced as a result of upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8. From what I witnessed, most of the issue during that upgrade, for the end user, was the forced change in how the PC booted to the metro screen (instead of the desktop) and no start menu being present.

Windows 10

When Windows 8 was the talk, I deliberately avoided the beta’s so that when it was released, I would experience (and see) what the end user would experience when it was finally released. I have to admit, I was quite shocked and can relate to the frustration many experienced. Now that Windows 10 is the talk, I decided to do the same and have not downloaded (or experienced) any of the Windows 10 beta’s.  Again, I want experience (and see) what others will experience (and see) the first time they use Windows 10.

HOWEVER — There is nothing to say that we can’t read about Windows 10, look at some screenshots, learn what is new, and at least prepare ourselves with some inside information.

To help prepare you for Windows 10, TechAdvisor has prepared a nice (and brief) Windows 10 review: hands on with the preview version of Windows 10 and the new Start menu, Edge browser, new apps and Cortana.

An Exhaustive Comparison Of The Best Online File Storage Services

There are so many online file storage services these days that you can find yourself lost in the herd. To help you narrow down your choices, I recommend that you visit I Love Free Software where they have a table posted that is an exhaustive comparison of the 15 best FREE cloud storage services (i.e. Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, OneDrive, Tresorit, DataBagg, Bitcasa, ASUS WebStorage, IDrive, MEGA, pCloud, Inbox Storage, Copy.com, SpiderOak, and FlipDrive).

Cloud Storage Services

I am very familiar with everyone of these services and can tell you that the cross comparison table that I Love Free Software has compiled is of great value; especially, if you do not know what services to use.

What I am finding, even with myself, I have signed up with many of these services and before I knew it I was losing track of what I had stored and where.  My recommendation, is keep it to one or two services, focus on organizing your files and focus on encrypting any sensitive files that you intend to store online.
