Geek Squeaks (#2016-01) FEATURING — The Lemming Effect Top 25 For 2015 — and MORE GREAT STUFF

January 4, 2016

The Lemming Effect Top 25 For 2015   – In today’s world we depend on a multitude of readily available sources for current events, news, politics, etc… The media competition is intense to the point that a lot of what we read, watch and hear is diluted with mistruths and downright lies. I am a firm believer that if you hear and see mistruths (and downright lies) enough, you will believe it to the point that if the truth were actually pointed out to you that you will deny it is the truth (and will become angry). “How dare you tell me this is not true!”, I saw this on my news channel, read it in my email, saw it on Facebook, and it is gospel. Folks, I am here to tell you that we are a very gullible society and are like a bunch of lemmings…

republicans cliff

If you don’t know, the term lemmings is a a metaphor for people who go along unquestioningly with a group with potentially dangerous consequences. The “Lemming Effect” is an innate psychological phenomenon, a survival trait, an inborn instinct in the majority of people. For example (and I have been around weapons for hunting purposes all my life), the media hype over the gun issue has initiated this “Lemming Effect” that has generated fear that we better arm ourselves now before our right to own guns are taken away. As a result, we are like lemmings and lineup to buy military grade weapons (and handguns) that require skill (and continual maintenance) that potentially could have dangerous long term consequences (even beyond our generation).

When there are times I feel I am becoming a lemming, I start looking for facts. For example, how many of you fell for the Mark Zuckerberg Giveaway Hoax where on 1 December 2015, Mark Zuckerberg shared a post on Facebook announcing the birth of his daughter and a pledge to giveaway 99% of his Facebook shares to users who shared the post?  If you fell for this, then you joined the Lemming’s Club. I fell for it because one of my reliable Facebook friends was circulating it; and, then it hit me, I need to check this out. Just because someone says it is true, does not make it true (even if it is someone that you consider to be a reliable resource).

One such site that I use to “assist” in research of some of this crazy stuff is Snopes.com which has come to be regarded as an online touchstone of rumor research. Recently Snopes posted the Most Popular Urban Legends of 2015 that features the top 25 rumors (or urban legends) that circulated most widely on the internet. Don’t become a lemming, always look for the facts and truths.

How To Import Your Browser Bookmarks Into Pocket – In a nutshell, Pocket is an online cloud based “bookmarking” service that will help you “save interesting articles, videos and more from the web for later enjoyment. Once saved to Pocket, the list of content is visible on any device — phone, tablet or computer. It can be viewed while waiting in line, on the couch, during commutes or travel — even offline”. I love Pocket and use it to categorize and save sites I want to visit later. I know you can save (bookmark) your sites in your browser, but Pocket is like a bookmarking site on steroids (much, much better in my opinion). Recently I was wondering if it was possible to import browser bookmarks into Pocket and found that “yes you can”…  To do this, CLICK HERE to visit the Import Bookmarks Into Pocket.

Kindle with FREE 3G + Wireless

July 23, 2011

The best selling item on Amazon, for 2 years running, has been the Kindle. Ironically, the Kindle is made by Amazon and is described as Amazon’s revolutionary wireless reading device. When it first hit the market, the Kindle immediately became popular. Finally, there was an electronic device that made sense with us middle aged folks (and older) that is straight from something you would have seen on “The Jetsons”.

Kindle 3G, Free 3G + Wi-Fi, 3G Works Globally, Graphite, 6″ Display with New E Ink Pearl Technology

Kindle

If you are new to the Kindle, let me tell you what the rave is all about. The Kindle is a wireless (tablet style) reading device, lighter than a paperback book, that gives you the ability to download books (electronically) via 3G or Wi-Fi. The cool part about the Kindle is that there is no monthly subscription fee or cost to connect to 3G. The cost factors in when you select and download a book. The last time I checked Amazon [CLICK HERE] , there was 1,006,663 books in the Kindle Bookstore.

If you are looking for a convenient way to satisfy that book reading addiction, then the Kindle may be your fix.

Feature Set of the most recent model of Kindle 3G and Wireless:

  • All-New, High-Contrast E Ink Screen– 50% better contrast with latest E Ink Pearl technology
  • Read in Bright Sunlight– No glare
  • New and Improved Fonts– New crisper, darker fonts
  • New Sleek Design– 21% smaller body while keeping the same 6″ size reading area
  • 17% Lighter– Only 8.7 ounces, weighs less than a paperback
  • Battery Life of Up to Two Months– A single charge lasts up to two months with wireless off
  • Double the Storage– Up to 3,500 books
  • Books in 60 Seconds– Download books anytime, anywhere
  • Free 3G Wireless– No monthly payments, no annual contracts
  • Built-In Wi-Fi– In addition to the 3G wireless, you can connect to Wi-Fi hotspots
  • 20% Faster Page Turns– Seamless reading
  • Enhanced PDF Reader– With dictionary lookup, notes, and highlights
  • New WebKit-Based Browser– Browse the web over Wi-Fi (experimental)
  • Special Offers – Special offers and sponsored screensavers display on the Kindle screensaver and on the bottom of the home screen—they don’t interrupt reading

Turn Your Blog Into a PDF Book

May 7, 2010

Steve over at TTC Shelbyville has outdone himself on telling us how and where you can “Make Your WordPress Blog Into a Book”.  What Steve is referring to is the web based (online) FREE service called BlogBooker.

image

What is this ?

BlogBooker produces a high-quality PDF Blog Book from all your blog’s entries and comments. Archives can be generated from any blog running on WordPress, LiveJournal (and derivatives) or Blogger.

The really cool factor with BlogBooker is that it will literally take every article you ever posted on your blog and compile it into a readable PDF book with a table of contents, chapters and all (all hot linked together).  During my testing and by following the simple instructions from the TTC Shelbyville article [ HERE ] I was able to take nearly 2 years worth of my writing and archive it into my own personal eBook. The compilation process, using an XML file that I easily generated at my WordPress Dashboard, took approximately 5 minutes.  End result was a 1373 page PDF book (29 MB) with every article (and comment) ever posted on What’s On My PC…  If you are a blogger and you use WordPress, LiveJournal or Blogger as your blogging service, then this is a great way to compile and have a searchable record of all your postings.

I tip my hat to Steve at the TTC Shelbyville Technical Blog for this great find!

FREE eBook – The Complete Windows 7 Shortcuts

February 14, 2010

This FREE Ebook is in the PDF and XPS formats.  It features over 200 keyboard shortcuts that are available in Windows 7 and its’ default programs.  If you are unfamiliar with keyboard shortcuts, please let me briefly explain.  Instead of using the mouse to typically perform a specific function, you press 2 or more (assigned) keys on your keyboard (in combination)  to perform the function.  Believe it or not, keyboard shortcuts can save a lot of time and effort in comparison to the mouse.

This (very impressive) eBook was professionally crafted, in its’ entirety, by Nitin Agarwal via The Windows Club Forum.  For the everyday computer user and computer tech, this eBook is an excellent “must have” reference guide and learning tool.

This eBook comprises of more than 200 keyboard shortcuts containing almost all the keyboard shortcuts that are available in Windows 7 and its default programs like Paint, WordPad, MS Office, Calculator, Help, Media Player, Media Center, Windows Journal, Internet Explorer, etc.
