Play Yahtzee Online (for FREE)

January 20, 2015

If you are from my generation, I am sure you played Yahtzee where the object of the game was to score the most points by rolling five dice to make certain combinations. Today there are numerous virtual (software and online) versions of Yahtzee available.

The best online version that I have come across, that is not saturated with too many ads that distracts from the playing of the game, is at Yahtzee.org

A FREE Alternative to Microsoft Office And Especially Microsoft Word

January 8, 2013

Most people at home think that when they buy a computer they have to throw the Microsoft Office Suite into the deal. Did you know that you can avoid the added expense and install other third party software that will get the job done for you and have the ability to read and write many of the Microsoft Office file formats?

Spending a lot of money on an Office Suite because you may write the occasional letter, does not make sense. If you are a student in school (or college) or a business person where Microsoft Office is a requirement, then it may make sense; and, even then (in most instances) people will only use the suite at home to view Office documents because they really don’t want to work from home.

Kingsoft Office SuiteRecently, I featured an Android Office Suite option for your phone and tablet called Kingsoft Office Suite for Android (see here).  I was so impressed with the Android version that I started to explore the Windows version that is available (for FREE) called Kingsoft Office Suite Free.

Kingsoft Office consists of a FREE word processor, spreadsheet program and presentation maker. You can download these components separately and in most instances you will only need the Word Processor (called Kingsoft Writer). To put this into perspective of how powerful (and compatible) the word processor is; Kingsoft Writer can open and edit all Microsoft Word files created with Microsoft Word 2003, 2007, and 2010.

Kingsoft Writer Free 2012 is a totally free word processor program with the qualities matching Microsoft Word and includes a wide range of easy to use features. It is the best Microsoft Word replacement supporting all the Word file formats including .docx. The easy to use user interface makes Kingsoft Writer an attractive choice of software for complete beginners and even the most advanced users. In addition, it introduced lots of useful functions including a built-in Word to PDF converter, automatic spell check, web layout view, etc.

So the next time you buy a computer, save yourself a considerable amount of money and give Kingsoft Office Suite FREE (especially Kingsoft Writer) a try…

Other Features of Writer Free 2012

Automatic Spell Check: Use the built-in spell checker to proofread your document. Any incorrect words are underlined in red.

Word Count: This feature helps to count the number of words in a document automatically. It can count pages, words, characters (with or without spaces) and paragraphs.

Word Document Encryption: Protect your privacy by preventing others from viewing or changing the files. Enter a read-only password to only allow document browsing and not modification. Enter read-write password to both browse and modify the document.

Mail Merge: A Mail Merging feature enables you to generate many documents at once that contain identical formatting, layout, text, graphics, and more in which only certain portions of each document vary.

Illustrations: A large range of clip arts, charts, shapes and pictures are available to choose from as well as several text effects, such as shadows, 3-D effects, wordart, outlines, emboss engrave, and more.

Cross-Reference: It offers cross-reference functions which refer to an item that appears in another location in a document. It can help you to find the content you are looking for as soon as possible and it also displays the structure of a book in a more systematical and compact way.

Equation and Symbol: A built-in equation editor is available for Writer which offers a number of often-used equations and operation symbols. You can easily insert and edit equations & symbols in your word document.

Various Document Viewing Methods: Diverse document viewing methods make it easy to edit your documents. These functions include the document map, gridlines, ruler, markup, and more.

One Click to Insert Blank Page and Page Break: It provides a useful function for inserting blank pages and page break that you can insert a blank pages or page break just by single-click.

Quickly Find the Space Hogs On Your Computer With WizTree

December 10, 2012

I have featured other programs here at What’s On My PC that will scan your drive(s) and identify which files and folders are using the most disk space. They all are good, but the scanning process often can take some time to complete. Also, I have found that one of the most difficult concepts to grasp, when it comes to managing space on a computer (or tablet, or smartphone), is understanding how the disk space is gauged in terms of kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, petabytes, etc…

Recently I came across another disk space analyzer, called WizTree, that I found to be very impressive and fast.

WizTree

Where WizTree excels is in its’ scanning speed; and, what makes it so fast is that WizTree does not scan the physical drive, but scans the hard drive’s Master File Table (MFT) directly from the disk.

Please Note:  When using programs such as this to identify the space hogs on your computer (or device) make sure you do not delete a spacehog (file or folder) that is needed for the operation of the computer (or other programs).  Typically, I use programs, such as WizTree, to determine what personal files I have saved (such as documents, pictures, movies, etc…) are consuming the most space. Programs such as this are also great for troubleshooting problems, as well.

The MFT is a special hidden file used by the NTFS file system to keep track of all files and folders on a hard drive. Scanning for files this way completely bypasses the operating system (Windows) and provides a huge performance boost.

Features:

  • Finds the files and folders using the most space on your hard drive
  • Work VERY Fast! We think it’s the fastest application of this type in the world!
  • Finds the top 1000 largest files on your hard drive
  • Sort the contents of your entire hard drive by folder size and optionally delete files and folders

WizTree, is a portable app that works on 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 with drives that are formatted in the NTFS format (which most modern drives are formatted).

A Start Menu That Comes Highly Recommended For Windows 8

December 4, 2012

If you follow my blog, then you probably are beginning to think that Ramblinrick is sure stuck on third party Start Menu options for Windows 8. Well, in a sense, I am…  Here are the most recent posts on this topic:

A Start Menu for Windows 8 That Is A Portable App

My Pick For A Windows 8 Start Menu

Seven Alternatives To Restore The Start Menu In Windows 8

Following yesterday’s post, Two Options to Boot Windows 8 To The Desktop, Bill Mullins’ from Bill Mullins’ Weblog – Tech Thoughts contacted me with another recommendation, called Classic Shell .

Classic Shell

Classic Shell is free and open-source software that is a collection of features that were available in older versions of Windows but are removed from Vista and Windows 7. In summary, I am seeing that Classic Start Menu is a jack of all trades and out of the many picks I have tried, this one is tried, true and tested; meaning, it has been around for awhile.

Features:

  • Drag and drop to let you organize your applications
  • Options to show Favorites, expand Control Panel, etc
  • Shows recently used documents. The number of documents to display is customizable
  • Translated in 35 languages, including Right-to-left support for Arabic and Hebrew
  • Does not disable the original start menu in Windows. You can access it by Shift+Click on the start button
  • Right-click on an item in the menu to delete, rename, sort, or perform other tasks
  • The search box helps you find your programs without getting in the way of your keyboard shortcuts
  • Supports jumplists for easy access to recent documents and common tasks
  • Available for 32 and 64-bit operating systems
  • Has support for skins, including additional 3rd party skins
  • Fully customizable in both looks and functionality
  • Support for Microsoft’s Active Accessibility
  • Converts the “All Programs” button in the Windows menu into a cascading menu (Vista and Windows 7)
  • Implements a customizable Start button (Windows 7 and 8)
  • Can show, search and launch Windows Store apps (Windows 8)
  • And last but not least – it’s FREE!

So if you are at a loss that there is no Start Menu at the Windows 8 desktop level, then Classic Menu may be the one to go with. It comes highly recommended by a highly respectable blogger.  Thank you goes out to Bill Mullins’ for making us aware of Classic Menu.
