Play Yahtzee Online (for FREE)

If you are from my generation, I am sure you played Yahtzee where the object of the game was to score the most points by rolling five dice to make certain combinations. Today there are numerous virtual (software and online) versions of Yahtzee available.

The best online version that I have come across, that is not saturated with too many ads that distracts from the playing of the game, is at Yahtzee.org

A FREE Alternative to Microsoft Office And Especially Microsoft Word

Most people at home think that when they buy a computer they have to throw the Microsoft Office Suite into the deal. Did you know that you can avoid the added expense and install other third party software that will get the job done for you and have the ability to read and write many of the Microsoft Office file formats?

Spending a lot of money on an Office Suite because you may write the occasional letter, does not make sense. If you are a student in school (or college) or a business person where Microsoft Office is a requirement, then it may make sense; and, even then (in most instances) people will only use the suite at home to view Office documents because they really don’t want to work from home.

Kingsoft Office SuiteRecently, I featured an Android Office Suite option for your phone and tablet called Kingsoft Office Suite for Android (see here).  I was so impressed with the Android version that I started to explore the Windows version that is available (for FREE) called Kingsoft Office Suite Free.

Kingsoft Office consists of a FREE word processor, spreadsheet program and presentation maker. You can download these components separately and in most instances you will only need the Word Processor (called Kingsoft Writer). To put this into perspective of how powerful (and compatible) the word processor is; Kingsoft Writer can open and edit all Microsoft Word files created with Microsoft Word 2003, 2007, and 2010.

Kingsoft Writer Free 2012 is a totally free word processor program with the qualities matching Microsoft Word and includes a wide range of easy to use features. It is the best Microsoft Word replacement supporting all the Word file formats including .docx. The easy to use user interface makes Kingsoft Writer an attractive choice of software for complete beginners and even the most advanced users. In addition, it introduced lots of useful functions including a built-in Word to PDF converter, automatic spell check, web layout view, etc.

So the next time you buy a computer, save yourself a considerable amount of money and give Kingsoft Office Suite FREE (especially Kingsoft Writer) a try…

Other Features of Writer Free 2012

Automatic Spell Check: Use the built-in spell checker to proofread your document. Any incorrect words are underlined in red.

Word Count: This feature helps to count the number of words in a document automatically. It can count pages, words, characters (with or without spaces) and paragraphs.

Word Document Encryption: Protect your privacy by preventing others from viewing or changing the files. Enter a read-only password to only allow document browsing and not modification. Enter read-write password to both browse and modify the document.

Mail Merge: A Mail Merging feature enables you to generate many documents at once that contain identical formatting, layout, text, graphics, and more in which only certain portions of each document vary.

Illustrations: A large range of clip arts, charts, shapes and pictures are available to choose from as well as several text effects, such as shadows, 3-D effects, wordart, outlines, emboss engrave, and more.

Cross-Reference: It offers cross-reference functions which refer to an item that appears in another location in a document. It can help you to find the content you are looking for as soon as possible and it also displays the structure of a book in a more systematical and compact way.

Equation and Symbol: A built-in equation editor is available for Writer which offers a number of often-used equations and operation symbols. You can easily insert and edit equations & symbols in your word document.

Various Document Viewing Methods: Diverse document viewing methods make it easy to edit your documents. These functions include the document map, gridlines, ruler, markup, and more.

One Click to Insert Blank Page and Page Break: It provides a useful function for inserting blank pages and page break that you can insert a blank pages or page break just by single-click.

Quickly Find the Space Hogs On Your Computer With WizTree

I have featured other programs here at What’s On My PC that will scan your drive(s) and identify which files and folders are using the most disk space. They all are good, but the scanning process often can take some time to complete. Also, I have found that one of the most difficult concepts to grasp, when it comes to managing space on a computer (or tablet, or smartphone), is understanding how the disk space is gauged in terms of kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, petabytes, etc…

Recently I came across another disk space analyzer, called WizTree, that I found to be very impressive and fast.

WizTree

Where WizTree excels is in its’ scanning speed; and, what makes it so fast is that WizTree does not scan the physical drive, but scans the hard drive’s Master File Table (MFT) directly from the disk.

Please Note:  When using programs such as this to identify the space hogs on your computer (or device) make sure you do not delete a spacehog (file or folder) that is needed for the operation of the computer (or other programs).  Typically, I use programs, such as WizTree, to determine what personal files I have saved (such as documents, pictures, movies, etc…) are consuming the most space. Programs such as this are also great for troubleshooting problems, as well.

The MFT is a special hidden file used by the NTFS file system to keep track of all files and folders on a hard drive. Scanning for files this way completely bypasses the operating system (Windows) and provides a huge performance boost.

Features:

  • Finds the files and folders using the most space on your hard drive
  • Work VERY Fast! We think it’s the fastest application of this type in the world!
  • Finds the top 1000 largest files on your hard drive
  • Sort the contents of your entire hard drive by folder size and optionally delete files and folders

WizTree, is a portable app that works on 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 with drives that are formatted in the NTFS format (which most modern drives are formatted).

A Start Menu That Comes Highly Recommended For Windows 8

If you follow my blog, then you probably are beginning to think that Ramblinrick is sure stuck on third party Start Menu options for Windows 8. Well, in a sense, I am…  Here are the most recent posts on this topic:

A Start Menu for Windows 8 That Is A Portable App

My Pick For A Windows 8 Start Menu

Seven Alternatives To Restore The Start Menu In Windows 8

Following yesterday’s post, Two Options to Boot Windows 8 To The Desktop, Bill Mullins’ from Bill Mullins’ Weblog – Tech Thoughts contacted me with another recommendation, called Classic Shell .

Classic Shell

Classic Shell is free and open-source software that is a collection of features that were available in older versions of Windows but are removed from Vista and Windows 7. In summary, I am seeing that Classic Start Menu is a jack of all trades and out of the many picks I have tried, this one is tried, true and tested; meaning, it has been around for awhile.

Features:

  • Drag and drop to let you organize your applications
  • Options to show Favorites, expand Control Panel, etc
  • Shows recently used documents. The number of documents to display is customizable
  • Translated in 35 languages, including Right-to-left support for Arabic and Hebrew
  • Does not disable the original start menu in Windows. You can access it by Shift+Click on the start button
  • Right-click on an item in the menu to delete, rename, sort, or perform other tasks
  • The search box helps you find your programs without getting in the way of your keyboard shortcuts
  • Supports jumplists for easy access to recent documents and common tasks
  • Available for 32 and 64-bit operating systems
  • Has support for skins, including additional 3rd party skins
  • Fully customizable in both looks and functionality
  • Support for Microsoft’s Active Accessibility
  • Converts the “All Programs” button in the Windows menu into a cascading menu (Vista and Windows 7)
  • Implements a customizable Start button (Windows 7 and 8)
  • Can show, search and launch Windows Store apps (Windows 8)
  • And last but not least – it’s FREE!

So if you are at a loss that there is no Start Menu at the Windows 8 desktop level, then Classic Menu may be the one to go with. It comes highly recommended by a highly respectable blogger.  Thank you goes out to Bill Mullins’ for making us aware of Classic Menu.

Watch FREE Movies and TV Shows On Your Android Phone or Tablet

With tablet computers (and smartphones) projected to be the hot item again this year, today’s post is pointed toward those who have an android tablet or those who are wishing for one for Christmas.

One of the neat things with tablet computers (and smartphones) is that you can do just about anything with them; even stream videos, movies, TV etc… to the devices. The problem is that most services that stream movies and TV require a paid subscription.

Today I want to share with you, a cloud based  (TV and Movie) service called Crackle that gives you the ability to watch full-length Hollywood movies & TV shows on your tablet or phone (and computer) — Free and on demand. What you are going to find at Crackle is not the latest and greatest, but you will find content that is pretty darn good for being FREE.

Crackle

* Watch full-length Hollywood movies and TV series
* FREE to download app, FREE to watch
* Unlimited, on demand viewing
* New movies and TV episodes added monthly
* Genres including: action, anime, comedy, crime, horror, thriller, sci-fi and anime
* Optimized for both phones and tablets
* Browse Movies, TV, Originals, Collections and Genres
* Build and manage your Watchlist for viewing on the app or online at Crackle.com.
* Stream HQ video via 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi
* App works in US, Canada, UK and Australia

Note:  You can get Crackle on your desktop or notebook computer at the main site [ here ].

Add Annotations To Your Images With iPhotoDraw

There are numerous techniques to add text, arrows, dimensions, lines, callout boxes (balloons) etc. to an image; however, you need to be completely in tune (knowledgeable) with the software you are using to accomplish this. Even then it can be a hunt to find these options or features in the software, which can prove to be time consuming and frustrating.

Today I came across a freebie that is right down my alley and it is called iPhotoDraw. If you have any familiarity with the MS-Office products then you will have no problem with iPhoto.

iPhotoDraw

iPhotoDraw is strictly dedicated and designed software that allows you to add text descriptions, callout boxes (balloons), arrows, lines, and other annotations to your images. Two cool feature with iPhotoDraw that you do not find in other software of this type,  is that you can enlarge a specific area of an image to make it standout and you can add dimension information to a specific object in the image.

When adding these annotations to your image (or Photo), iPhotoDraw initially does not mess with the original image file; instead, the annotations are stored in a separate file (thus keeping the original intact). To make the annotations permanent to the original file, you have to go to the file menu and select the export option to save the file as a .jpg file.

If you are into any type of desktop publishing, graphic design, web page editing, Powerpoint Presentations, etc… iPhotoDraw is a freebie to grab! I would sure like to see a portable version of this…

Platform : Windows XP (sp3), Windows Vista, Windows 7

Software requirement : .Net Framework 3.0 or later

Provide Real-Time FREE Protection For Your Home Or Small Business PC

If you are looking for a security software option, that is FREE; that is easy to understand and use; that uses minimal system resources; and is engineered by a company that we are all familiar with, then Microsoft Security Essentials is a good choice.

You will see me here on the blog pushing this software on a regular basis. It is a layer of defense that I have installed on all of my PCs; not because it is FREE, but because it does the job.

Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free* download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up-to-date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology.

Microsoft Security Essentials runs quietly and efficiently in the background so you’re free to use your Windows-based PC the way you want—without interruptions or long computer wait times.

Before installing Microsoft Security Essentials, we recommend that you uninstall other antivirus software already running on your PC. Running more than one antivirus program at the same time can potentially cause conflicts that affect PC performance.

** IMPORTANT **  –  When changing security software on your PC from one brand to another, it is very important that you completely uninstall the security software you intend to remove. The uninstaller built into windows will not cut it. I highly recommend you either visit the software maker’s site to get information to uninstall the product or use a third party uninstaller such as AppRemover.

The free AppRemover utility enables the thorough uninstallation of security applications like antivirus and antispyware from your computer. Remove computer stress. Simply, cleanly and effectively.

TODO Lists With An Interface For The Tech-Savvy

I don’t know about you, but I am constantly trying to keep track of what I things I need to do, in an effort to keep my life in order.  I have tried virtually everything from task managers, to virtual post-it notes, to note keeping software.

Today, I came upon another online player called Holly that gives you the ability to maintain nested to-do lists. What is unique about Holly is that it is a simple online text editor where the tasks you create are mini-projects with their own sub-tasks. Holly is visually appealing, easy to use, and no sign up is required.  Simply visit the site and start editing the list and you are automatically assigned an unique web address that can be shared with others.  It is important that you remember (or bookmark) the address your are assigned.

Holly

At first it took me a little while to understand how Holly worked, but once I got it down, I can honestly say I will be using Holly on a regular basis. Another selling point to me was that Holly works very well on my tablet.

Features:

Edit pure text – Edit your tasks with the most powerful input method that exists – a simple text editor.

Nested TODO lists – Tasks are mini-projects with their own sub-tasks, which you can track in lists of lists. Quickly re-arrange items with drag’n’drop.

Keyboard controlled – Everything you can do in Holly you can do with either a keyboard or a mouse. There are hotkeys for everything.

Collaborate – Share lists with your coworkers, friends and family. No sign up required.

All your tasks, everywhere – Access your tasks from any browser. Holly also works great on your iPhone or Android device.

What do you get with you cross Google Chrome with Windows Explorer?  You get Clover

Clover

While working on my sister site, Bookmarks4Techs, I posted the site MakeUseOf (as a featured site) when I noticed they had posted the article Clover 2 Turns Windows Explorer Into Google Chrome [Windows], that caught my eye.

To give credit where credit is due, you need to take a trip to MakeUseOf to learn more about this Windows Explorer extension that will give Windows Explorer that Google Chrome feel (tabs and all).  In my testing Clover is a keeper… According to the article, to use Clover you will need to have Chrome installed.

Windows Essentials 2012 – FREE Software From Microsoft

When I post a blog article on WordPress, I use software to draft the article and upload it to my WordPress account. The software I use to perform this task is called Live Writer, which is FREE from Microsoft and is part of the Windows Essentials suite of software. What caught my attention was that I noticed that there was a 2012 version of Live Writer available that I promptly downloaded and installed. This prompted me to explore the other software options that are available (for FREE) in the Windows Essentials suite. I encourage you to take a look at these software options and if you are into blogging, I highly recommend Live Writer.  As a matter of fact, I would not know what to do without it.

To keep this simple, the Windows Essentials Suite consists of Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Messenger, Mail, Family Safety, Writer, Outlook Connector Pack and Skydrive. A brief summary of each and links to each are provided below. To get any of these you simply download a setup file and select which software package you desire to install.  Again, each of these software options are FREE and are produced by Microsoft.

When you initiate the setup for Windows Essentials, you will see the following Windows Essentials 2012 dialog box. Choose the option, “Choose the programs you want to install” to make sure you are selecting what you specifically want to install.  Select the other option and you get the whole works.

Windows Essentials

After you click on “Choose the programs you want to install”, you will see another Windows Essentials 2012 dialog box that allows you to select what programs to install. Also notice in the screenshot that on my computer it picked up that I already had SkyDrive, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker and Writer installed. In my case, as I progressed through the installation process, I was informed that the software I already had installed would be upgraded to the 2012 version.

Windows Essentials

To give you a brief summary about each of these software applications :

Photo Gallery – tools to help you organize and edit your photos, then share them online.

Movie Maker – tools to help you be your own movie director. Quickly add photos and footage from your PC or camera into Movie Maker. Then fine tune your movie just the way you want it.

Messenger – this is Microsoft’s messaging client that has been around for years.  It has grown up to include video calls, instant messaging, that will keep you socially connected on a variety of platforms (including Android).

Live Mail – an email client that you install on your computer that is actually pretty good; however, I personally depend on the online webmail options. With Live Mail, you can manage multiple email accounts, calendars, and your contacts, even when you’re offline.

Family Safety – if you have kids and you are teaching your kids internet safety and/or you need a way to monitor their online activity, then Family Safety is a must have install. Activity reports are built int to monitor your kids’ computer activity.  You can even choose what they can and can’t access on the internet AND set time periods.

Live Writer – my favorite (and most used software application on my PC). With Live Writer you can quickly create and publish blog posts with photos, videos, maps, and more. Live Writer makes blogging easy!

Outlook Connector Pack – gives you the ability to manage your Hotmail account (now being called Outlook.com) from Microsoft Outlook. If you have the Microsoft Outlook software installed on your computer, then the connector pack is something that may interest you.

Microsoft Skydrive – another favorite of mine. This allows you to access and sync your Skydrive account from your computer.

One of My Favorites – SearchMyFiles

I have never been a real fan of the search operation that is built into windows; instead, have relied on third party applications, such as SearchMyFiles.

What I find, is that most people do not want to try something that is not attached to the operating system (or they do not understand it); however, there are those occasions where the third party applications (in my opinion) are better. In this case, SearchMyFiles, is my “go to” utility when I need to find a specific file on my computer (or another computer, since it is a portable app).

The only thing, looking through the eyes of the home computer user, is that SearchMyFiles may appear difficult to understand; when, in fact once you see that there is really only two components in the program that you really need to focus on, it becomes quite easy to use.

Again, SearchMyFiles is a portable app. Just download it and run. Once the program loads, look for the area that says “base folder”.  In that area type in (or browse for) the folder location or drive location that you desire to perform the search. I typically type in what you see in the screenshot below. Next, type in the filename using wildcards.  What are wildcards?  If you notice below, there is an asterisk before and after the word “*starburn*. Using the wildcard format tells SearchMyFiles to search the “C” Drive (which is almost always your hard drive) for any file that contains the word “starburn”. By using the wildcard format, I eliminate any possibility of the file not being located.

SearchMyFiles

SearchMyFiles (by NirSoft) is probably one of my most used portable apps.  It is very fast for a search utility that does not rely on indexing and has many features making it a super powerful search utility.

Over 450 Web Fonts Now Available In Google Docs

It still surprises me when I talk computers with people, the number of people that are not familiar with Google Docs. Google Docs, as it rapidly continues to evolve, has become the premier online office suite consisting of documents, spreadsheets, presentations, drawings and forms. When you sign up for Google Docs you are in essence now signing up for Google Drive. If you are a home based computer user and you are looking for an office suite solution (such as a word processor), then Google Docs is the solution.

Earlier in the month, Google made available over 450 web fonts that can be used to spruce up your Google Docs creations. The fonts are very easy to get to and easy to turn “on” and “off” (or select)

Simply open up a new (or existing) document, go to the toolbar, select the font button and a drop down box will appear. At the bottom of the font list you will see “add fonts.  Click on “add fonts” and you will be presented with another box where you can preview, pick and choose what fonts you want to use. The fonts you select will be added to the drop down box where the font will be available anytime you work on a document.

FREE Phone Service Using Google Voice and a MagicJack Device

GVJackRecently I have been experimenting with a one time $20 dollar software investment called GVJack (by PhoneSoft), that gives you the ability to use a MagicJack Device connected to your computer (and a phone), to make and receive phone calls across the internet (VOIP), using a Google Voice account. With this being said, in essence you can setup a voice over IP phone connection for a one time cost of $20, plus the cost of the MagicJack. The MagicJack does not have to be activated and does not have to be new. Also, if you are using an activated MagicJack account, you can still use GVJack.

From what I have experienced so far, using the GVJack Software, the MagicJack Device and my Google Voice account, it is an awesome and very cheap way to make FREE local and long distance calls (in the U.S.) using a regular type house phone with all the bells and whistles that Google Voice offers (such as caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding, etc..). In my case I have a portable phone connected that allows me to roam the house when making (or receiving) calls. So far, the clarity and reliability of the connection rivals that of my traditional landline connection.

If you would like to give this a try, you will need the components I previously mentioned (i.e. $20, GVJack Software, MagicJack Device, Computer, broadband connection to the internet, a phone, and a Google Voice Account).

A factor to keep in mind…  Google has been gracious enough, since the inception of Google Voice, to keep the local and long distance service FREE (in the U.S.). Google could always change their mind on this and make it a pay for use service; however, from what I am seeing so far from Google Voice is that their funding stream is being generated from the international calling feature and the ads. Personally, after experimenting with GVJack (using the trial version), I plan to cough up the 20 bucks. I like the idea of using my portable house phone to take advantage of my Google Voice account (and my broadband internet connection).

Permanently Delete Files With Blank and Secure

Software to recover deleted data on hard drives and other media can be easily found on the internet these days; which is a good thing. For example, one of my favorites is Recuva (by Piriform), which is FREE… I recently used Recuva, to assist a relative, to recover deleted picture files that were accidentally deleted.

However, on the flip side of the coin there are occasions where you  should take precautions to prevent deleted data from ever being recovered. For example, let’s say you are working on something that is sensitive in nature, contains private information (for your eyes only) and you decide to delete it from the computer’s hard drive or other media.  In essence, even you if you dump the recycle bin following the deletion, there is a high probability that the file can still be recovered.

To have peace of mind, I recommend using an utility such as Blank And Secure to permanently delete those sensitive files.

image

Blank And Secure is different than many of the other wiping utilities that I have tried in that it will overwrite the file your desire to delete with zeros (up to 35 times). According to the developer, recovery of a deleted file is impossible after using this utility.

To use Blank and Secure (which is portable), simply download and run; drag/drop the file onto the program interface; select the number of times to overwrite/ then hit delete. If you are not into dragging and dropping, this program may not be for you; however, if you want to delete an important file, I truly believe the concept behind this program will permanently prevent it from being recovered.

Another feature of this program is that you can fill the free space on the drive with “null” (or zeros) to remove all deletion tracks on the drive.  I would only use this option if you were going to give the computer away at the end of its’ life cycle and you want to make sure there is nothing lingering behind on the free space area of the drive.

Automatically Unlock The Cap Locks Key

I love my Logitech K350 Wireless Keyboard, but there is one thing I do not like about it. The keyboard does not tell you when the cap locks key is activated. As a result I find myself often messing with the cap locks key to turn it off.

A solution that I came across, that is automated, is called CapsUnlocker.

image

What CapsUnlocker does is this. Let’s say I activate the cap locks key and forget to deactivate it. CapsUnlocker, after a period of 30 seconds (or whatever you set it at), will automatically turn off the caps lock key for you. I no longer have to wonder if the caps lock key is on or not.

CapsUnlocker is a portable app that can be set to load at Windows startup…

Use Your Google Drive As A Fax Machine

HelloFax  Take advantage of your Google Drive and use HelloFax to sign and send faxes online.

With Google Drive being a new service provided by Google I am starting to see third party developers coming out with apps that integrate and take advantage of Google Drive. HelloFax is a prime example and is one of the first out of the gate by offering 50 free fax pages per month and unlimited signatures.

After integrating with HelloFax, you’ll get a HelloFax folder in your Google Drive account. This folder will be automatically populated with your inbound and outbound faxes, as well as your signed documents and signature requests.

By downloading HelloFax (as a Google App) you can have the functionality of HelloFax with any file in your Google Drive folder. HelloFax currently supports the following file types (doc, docx, pdf, tif, tiff, ppsx, ppt, pptx, tif, tiff, jpg, jpeg, png, xls, xlsx, txt, and gif).

Appears you can only send faxes with the FREE account and if you need to receive faxes you will need to sign up for either the Basic, Premium or Ultimate plan. Oh well, its’ FREE and gives you the ability to send up to 50 pages per month (which is more than I will ever use from home).

ToolWiz Care Adds An Image Editor

Recently I did a post on ToolWiz Care, the “free tool set designed to speed up your PC and give your system full care”. I am not going to go into a long description of what ToolWiz Care is all about; however, if you have not experienced ToolWiz Care and you desire to learn more about it, I encourage you to read the original article [ HERE ] .

I have been using and closely following the development of this all-in-one super utility and can’t put it down. Today, I found that they added another feature to the program where you can perform a screen capture and following the capture the captured image will open into a newly added picture editor. It took me a bit to find the editor, but once I did I was quite impressed with the editor even though it is a new baby.

To get to the editor (if you have ToolWiz Care installed), you can right click on the ToolWiz Care icon in the tray or right click the toolbar and select screen capture from the menu.  Also, on the toolbar you will find a button to perform a screen capture.

image

After you perform a screen capture, you can open the the captured image in the editor (see below).

image

Once the captured image is opened in the editor you can perform various image editing tasks, such as adding arrows, text, etc….  I also found that I could load an image from the computer (such as a photo) and perform some basic image editing and enhancement tasks.

image

ToolWiz Care continues to fascinate me; especially, for the quality of tools I am seeing in something that is a new kid on the block. Getting to the picture editor took me some navigating around to locate it, but when I found it, I was quite impressed. The developers may want to consider adding the editor to the main program or to the floating toolbar where it can be quickly launched. I could see launching the editor to load an image from the computer (to fix a pic, add text, a watermark, etc…).

To the developers of ToolWiz Care, keep up the great work!  You have a follower here at What’s On My PC

Backup Your Files With FreeFileSync

Failing to backup your personal files is a disaster waiting to happen. To prevent this disaster from occurring get yourself a good external hard drive and use FreeFileSync to perform the backups.

FreeFileSync

FreeFileSync is not intended to perform backups of your entire drive; instead it is designed to backup your personal files. For example, I use FreeFileSync to backup (and sync) my documents, pictures, music and video files to an external drive. There are two things I especially like about FreeFileSync:  1.)  It is easy to use and learn and 2.) You can run it as a portable app (i.e. from your flash drive).

FreeFileSync is a folder comparison and synchronization tool providing highly optimized performance and usability without needless user interface complexity.

Features:

  • Detect moved and renamed files and folders
  • Copy locked files (Volume Shadow Copy Service)
  • Detect conflicts and propagate deletions
  • Binary comparison
  • Full support for Symbolic Links
  • Run as a batch job
  • Multiple folder pairs
  • Support very long path names > 260 characters
  • Transactional file copy
  • Cross-platform: Windows/Linux
  • Expand environment variables like %USERPROFILE%
  • Access variable drive letters by volume name (USB sticks)
  • Native 32 and 64-bit builds
  • Versioning of deleted files
  • Optimal sync sequence prevents disc space bottlenecks
  • Full unicode support
  • Highly optimized performance
  • Include/exclude files via filter
  • Local or portable installation
  • Handle daylight saving time changes on FAT/FAT32
  • Use macros %time%, %date%, et al. for recurring backups
  • Case sensitive synchronization
  • Built-in locking serializes multiple jobs running against the same network share

Explore Your Android Device With ES File Explorer

Exploring or navigating the file (and folder) structure on an Android device can be quite challenging depending on the device. For example I currently have three devices (Toshiba Thrive Tablet, Amazon Kindle Fire Tablet and a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Smartphone) in my household that are Android OS driven; and all three are limited or have minimal interface to the file structure.

Being the geekster that I am, a good file manager is a must in order to adequately manage the files on the computer or any device where file management is possible. For Android, the topper in the file management category in my book is ES File Explorer.

ES File Explorer

ES File Explorer, hands down, is the best out there…  For me, the power in this file manager is that, not only can you browse the file structure on the device, you can also connect and perform file operations on your computer network (via file shares) and in the cloud (with Box, SugarSync and Dropbox).  FTP and Bluetooth file transfer capabilities are also built in…  For example through ES File Explorer I can connect to my 50 GB Box.com account on the internet and perform file management operations (such as cut, copy, paste, etc.), as if they are local on the device.

Another feature, I really like, is that with a horizontal swipe of the finger, I can toggle between the local file structure screen, to the LAN screen (local area network screen), to the Cloud network screen, and to the FTP screen.

ES File Explorer

I am telling you, I would be lost without this app (which is FREE) on my Android devices (especially the Kindle Fire). ES File Explorer is available for download onto your Android devices (for FREE) through Google Play (formerly called the Android Market.

Latest Features List :

* File Manager — Operate files(Copy, Paste, Cut/Move, Create, Delete and Rename, Share/Send) in the phone and computers

* Multiselect files

* Application manager — Manage apps(Install, Uninstall, Backup, Shortcuts, Category)

* Compress and Decompress ZIP files, Unpack RAR files, can create encrypted (AES 256 bit) ZIP files

* View Different file formats, photos, docs, videos anywhere, support third party applications such as Document To Go to open document files

* Thumbnails for APK,images, and with an inbuilt image browser

* Text viewers and editors

* Search files

* Access your Home PC, via WIFI with SMB

* FTP, it’s your FTP client, manage the files on the FTP server as the ones on the sd card

* Dropbox,Box.net, Sugarsync, it’s an enhanced cloud storage client other than the official version. It can save photos and videos to your net drive and share your photos and docs, easily edit docs in your account.

* Bluetooth file transfer tool. You can copy and paste files between bluetooth ready devices. It supports OBEX FTP for browsing devices and transfering files between Bluetooth devices.

* Kill tasks, with a one click, pretty simple widget for auto kill, with ignore list to ignore some applications you don’t want to kill. It is an advanced task killer to kill running applications and clean memory(This feature needs ES Task Manager module installed)

* Shortcuts, bookmark manager (This feature needs ES Bookmark Manager module installed)

* Root explorer feature. It is the ultimate file management tools for root users. You might access the whole file system and data directories, and change permissions.

* Developers can visit our website for the developer interface for picking files from your applications, email attachments, etc.

* And much more.

Close All Running Applications With Just A Single Click

You talk about point and click…  Here is a small software utility (called Close All Windows) that gives you the ability to close all running applications with a single click. No installation is required. Simply download Close All Windows, extract the file and create a shortcut to the file on your desktop; or, if you have Windows 7, pin the shortcut to your taskbar. You can even tell Close All Windows to exclude certain windows that you do not want closed. If you are like me and end up with many applications open at the same time, this utility makes it easy to bring down the house and close all of those windows at once.

A Minimalistic Program That Provides Basic Automation (recording and playback)

When on the hunt for FREE software, I am always up for software that is unique; something that is outside the norm. Today, I want to introduce you to a small software utility that is only 33KBs in size that I think you may find quite useful.  It is called TinyTask

TinyTask

What TinyTask does is simply this; it can record actions that you perform on the computer and then compiles those actions into a self executable file that will allow you to later playback (and automate) those actions. In other words you can turn the task that you record into your very own standalone program that will automate a task that you routinely (or repetitiously) perform. TinyTask can also be used as a training presentation tool to show students how to perform a specific action on the computer.

Developer’s Description:

Our most popular freeware, TinyTask provides quick & easy automation by recording/playback. It is a case study in minimalist programming: the entire program is only 33k — and over 14k are graphics, which means the executable portion is very small and efficient. It is used as the test harness for the “Recording” feature of vTask Studio.

New: now includes an EXE compiler! Turn your recordings into standalone programs. If you were stranded on a deserted island, this is the one program you would want.

TinyTask is completely portable, requires no installation, and will not touch or alter any registry settings. As I mentioned, I am always up for something outside the norm and TinyTask meets that criteria.  Great job to the developers on this little jewel that really shines.

A Comprehensive One-Click English Thesaurus and Dictionary for Windows

I know that there are many online dictionaries available; however, if you are in the middle of drafting an important document your train of thought can be lost when you have to stop and go online to find the definition or spelling of a word.

To solve this problem, and to help get that right word or help find a definition of a word, I use the FREE version of WordWeb.

 WordWeb

What I truly like about this application is the one click hotkey support. For example, with WordWeb you can find the definition of a word by placing your mouse pointer over a questionable word, hold down the Ctrl key on the keyboard and right click the mouse button and WordWeb will pop up with the definition.

Another cool and powerful feature is that you can also look up words in WikipediaWiktionary and Word Web Online. I especially like the Wikipedia option, because (in a sense) it makes WordWeb not only a dictionary, but an encyclopedia.

WordWeb

In my opinion, WordWeb is one Windows application that should be on everyone’s PC.

Need To Erase Data From Your Hard Drive – Try Active KillDisk

If you are planning to get rid of your computer, that old external hard drive or you want to do a real data cleanup on that flash drive, then use Active KillDisk to safely remove the data.

image

The FREE version of Active KillDisk will suffice in most cases for PC’s and other drive media that is commonly used in the home environment.  Believe me, it is better to use Active KillDisk than to use the standard windows utilities of FDISK, FORMAT utilities, or DELETE.  Using the standard windows utilities will only skim the layer leaving remnants of data that can be easily recovered using any free data recovery software; whereas, Active KillDisk will format the drive and then completely overwrite it making the disk virtually unreadable.  Again, for home based computers, the FREE version of Active KillDisk will get the job done.

Manage Multiple Email Accounts with POP Peeper

Occasionally you will see here at What’s On My PC, repeat reviews on top quality software that is graciously made available for FREE and software that I feel is a must have. Today I am doing a repeat review on one of my favorite software programs called POP Peeper.

POP Peeper

In today’s world of computing, compared to yesteryear, it is not uncommon to have more than one email account. As a result, managing and organizing multiple accounts can get out of hand real quick. A solution to bring it all together is POP Peeper.

POP Peeper is an email notifier that runs in your Windows task bar and alerts you when you have new email on your POP3, IMAP (with IDLE support), Hotmail\MSN\LiveMail, Yahoo, GMail, MyWay, Excite, iWon, RediffMail, Juno and NetZero accounts. IMAP supports allows you to access AOL, AIM, Fastmail and other services. Send mail directly from POP Peeper and use the address book to email your frequently used contacts. POP Peeper allows you to view messages using HTML or you can choose to safely view all messages in rich or plain text. Several options are available that will decrease or eliminate the risks of reading your email (viruses, javascript, webbugs, etc). POP Peeper can be run from a portable device and can be password protected. Many notification options are availble to indicate when new mail has arrived, such as sound alerts (configurable for each account), flashing scroll lock, skinnable popup notifier, customized screensaver and more.

I cannot say enough good things about this program. It does it all when you are trying to keep track of multiple email accounts. In example, I currently manage five different email accounts with each account serving a specific purpose. With POP Peeper I can pull down any incoming email from those accounts in one window. The cool part about this is, once setup, I can color code each account. This allows me to easily identify each email account (by color) and allows me to pick and choose (manage and organize) what email is important, etc… The real power with POP Peeper is the email notification feature that will automatically check your accounts (at preset time intervals) and let you know (by visual or audible cues) of any incoming email.

POP Peeper

Primary Features

Easy Setup – accounts are imported from your existing email client(s)

Supports POP3, IMAP (including GMail, AOL, AIM, FastMail, etc), SMTP, GMail, Hotmail\MSN\LiveMail, Yahoo, MyWay, Excite, iWon, RediffMail, Juno, NetZero

Easy Timer – An Easy To Use Alarm Clock and Timer

Many occasions when I find myself getting tired I will take a power nap to rejuvenate this half century old body. Oftentimes I will use my computer as an alarm clock to wake me up. On the other end of the spectrum when I exercise to increase my energy level I will use the computer to time down my exercise session.

There are numerous software options and web apps available that you can find that will serve as an alarm clock and/or a timer. One option that I use as my “go to” alarm clock and timer is the portable app called Easy Timer.

Easy Timer

Easy Timer is small in file size; but, do not let that fool you. This portable app is less than 400KB and packed inside is a fully customizable (and resizable) alarm clock and timer with over 35 pre-installed alarm sounds. One neat way I found to resize Easy Timer was to rotate the scroll wheel on my mouse.

Main Features

  • Set up an alarm timer with just a few clicks
  • Separate analog desktop clock
  • Really easy and intuitive interface
  • Over 35 pre-installed alarm sounds
  • Multilingual: CA, DE, EN, ES, FR, IT, PT, SE
  • Portable: Just one executable, no need for installation

To download Easy Timer [ CLICK HERE ] . When you get to the web site, scroll to the bottom for the FREE version.

Search and Destroy (Spyware and Malware)

There are numerous security software offerings out there these days to the point, as an end-user, you do not know what direction to go.

Typically it is a good idea to layer the protection on your PC.  For example on my PC I have installed Microsoft Security Essentials, Immunet and the commercial version of Malwarebytes Anti-malware.  All three play very well together and all three are monitoring my system in real-time.  Another strategy that I will use, in addition to what is already installed, is through the use of portable security apps. On a periodic basis I run the portable security app to scan my computer. It is sort of my way of getting second opinion.

One of the “portable versions” of a security app that I use is Spybot Search & Destroy [ CLICK HERE ] .

Spybot Search and Destroy Portable

If you are someone that is an old dog in the world of computers, I am sure you know about the full install of Spybot Search and Destroy; it has been around for a long time. I think I may have swayed from the full install of Spybot at one point due to all of the other offerings that came about, so I am happy seeing this as a portable app option.

So if you are looking for a “portable” security app that you can slap on your flash drive as an addition to your tech toolbox OR you are looking for that “second opinion” security app to periodically scan your PC, then Spybot Search & Destroy Portable is a nice addition.

Spybot Search and Destory

Spybot – Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven’t intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been “hijacked” (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don’t see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there’s no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

An Eco-Friendly Printing Utility for FREE

Have you ever noticed that when you go to print out a web page, what you see is not what you always get?  Oftentimes that illusion of two or or three pages turns out to be multiple pages of nothing but garbage. As a result, you end up wasting paper and ink which we all know is quite expensive.

To give you a solution to this problem, I recently found a really nice utility, that is FREE, called iPrint that will help decrease your printing costs up to 60 percent, will allow to preview and select the pages you desire to print AND on top of it all you have option of printing multiple pages on each sheet of paper. You can fit two or four pages on each sheet of paper if you desire.

iPring

Do you want to decrease your printing expenses by up to 60%? Do you want to help protect the environment while also protecting your wallet? iPrint is the solution! Think about how much your organization spends each year on paper and ink costs – iPrint will reduce that number by 30-60% and it costs you nothing!

That’s not all…  iPrint will automatically detect the blank pages and tag them for deletion PLUS, you can group print jobs together from multiple applications.

When you install iPrint, it installs itself as a virtual printer. When you go to print a page, instead of using the printer attached to your computer, simply select the iPrint printer to preview and gain control over what you eventually will print to your physical printer.

FREE Utility to Manipulate and Sort Text

Have you ever had a list of text, that was not in alphabetical order, and you wish there was a method to automatically put the text in order for you?

Well, look no further.  WinSorter to the rescue.

WinSorter is an application that is designed to manipulate and automate the placement of text. The screenshot below tells the whole story.

To use WinSorter, simply startup the app, use your mouse pointer to highlight the text you desire to manipulate, then click on the WinSorter icon in the system tray (right lower corner next to the clock).  After you click on the WinSorter icon, a large menu selection (see below) will appear that will give you a multitude of options.

WinSorter is FREE and requires no installation (which means it is portable).

All In One FREE Data Recovery Suite

Recently I featured an article, titled A Successful Data Recovery Story Using Some Desperation Moves where the hero of the day was a software application called MiniTool Power Data Recovery.

MiniTool Power Data Recovery

I realize there are numerous undelete recovery apps out there, but for some reason I always go to this app to get the job done. I have found it seems to dig a little deeper than most when recovering deleted data.

In addition, MiniTool Power Data Recovery is a “data recovery suite” which means it does more than the standard apps that are available.

For example, MiniTool Power Data Recovery has the ability to:

Recover formatted disks or partitions
Recover damaged partitions
Recover lost partitions
Recover CD & DVD disks
Recover Photos & Flash Memory cards

Home users can use MiniTool Power Data Recovery software to recover their lost data in any condition for free. I highly recommend this app for the tech toolbox.

NOTE: A second hard disk is recommended for recovery. Do not download the software on the drive that contains lost data. This may cause disk overwrite and permanent data loss!!!

With computers being mainstreamed in people’s homes for more than 10 years it still amazes me that people do not realize the gold mine that is available in FREE software. To put this in perspective, I have three computers in my home and all three, with the exception of one, have nothing on them but FREE software apps. The one exception is that I have Microsoft Office installed on my main PC, due I need it for my job; otherwise, all the other apps are FREE. To put this further in perspective, any software you see reviewed on my blog, is FREE software.

FREE Software to Enlarge The Capacity of the Windows Clipboard

The Windows clipboard is that hidden data storage area that is used to temporarily store data that gives you the ability to cut, copy and paste between applications. The Windows clipboard is limited in that it is a one time cut/copy and paste operation that does not allow for or save multiple instances of the same. To resolve this limitation there are third party software solutions that will allow you to store more than one instance of a cut/copy and paste operation.  One such (FREE) application is called PasteCopy.Net . I have featured this app on here before and it is definitely worth a repeat, due that it continues to get better.

PasteCopy.Net is a portable clipboard manager that enhances and (in essence) enlarges the capacity of the Windows Clipboard operations by supporting multiple cut/copy and paste operations. This app will handle multiple cut/copy and paste operations of graphic and/or text and is very useful; especially if you are a blogger or someone that performs a great deal of editing (e.g. html editor, graphic editor, author).  The cool factor about this clipboard manager is that you can arrange the items that you accumulate into categories which makes locating clips a snap.

PasteCopy.NET does not require any installation, and does not leave a trace on the computer; however, the app is dependent on .NET 2.0 or higher (which is a component that is commonly installed on today’s PCs).

Supported Operating Systems: Windows 98/ME/2000 SP3/Server 2003/XP SP2/Vista/Windows 7 – Requirements .NET 2.0 or higher

PasteCopy.Net

Features:

  • Portable freeware tool, only (605KB)
  • Multilingual support
  • Auto- Copy & Paste Windows Clipboard
  • Convert rtf to txt (-automatically)
  • Convert html to rtf or txt (-automatically)
  • (Auto-) resizable/hide preview
  • Mouse-hover/keystroke preview
  • Clipboard-content preview in SystemTray
  • Export and print function

Free Touch Typing Tutor for Windows

I bet you are someone that uses the computer on a regular basis that resorts to “hunting and pecking” when it comes to using the keyboard.

Folks, I cannot stress the importance of learning basic keyboarding skills. Personally, I learned to type (on a typewriter) in high school and it is probably one of the most important skills I ever learned. I truly believe, that very class paved the way to my future of learning computers, writing, etc…  On a a scale of 1 to 10, my keyboarding skill level is probably a 6 or 7.  I still have some fine tuning to do…

Knowing how important it is to myself and other computer users on learning or improving keyboarding skills, I periodically post an article about FREE software that is available where you can be “self-taught” on using the keyboard.

One of my favorites is called TIPP10, a FREE touch typing tutor for Windows, Mac OS and Linux.

TIPP10

What sets TIPP10 above the others is the intelligent text selection feature that will automatically focus on the area of the keyboard that you are stuggling with.

The lesson texts react instantly to your typing mistakes by repeating mistyped letters more frequently. The system helps you eliminate typing mistakes and learn touch typing efficiently. A wide range of dictations ensures you’ll never get bored. You will become acquainted with all the keys on the keyboard in 20 sequential training lessons. Commonly used characters are practiced earlier and more frequently than those that appear less frequently.

TIPP10

TIPP10 if very popular (downloaded over a million times) and is also available in a portable version.

Do you think your PC has a virus?

If you currently have anti-virus or anti-malware software installed and you think your computer system has been compromised and you need a second opinion; an option to consider is Microsoft’s Safety Scanner.

The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free downloadable security tool that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It works with your existing antivirus software.

The purpose of the Microsoft Safety Scanner is just that.  It is a safety scanner and not full install antivirus software package with realtime protection.  Simply download and run.

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

Reflected below are screenshots of Microsoft Safety Scanner to give you an idea what to expect after you download and run the scanner file.

Accept the End User License Agreement

Microsoft Safety Scanner

A notice advising you that Microsoft Security Scanner is not a replacement for an anti-malware solution; however, the tool is engineered to remove viruses, spyware, and other potentially unwanted software.

Microsoft Safety Scanner

Scan Type:  Determineswhether you want to perform a “Quick Scan”, a “Full Scan” or a “Customized Scan”.  I recomment the “Full Scan” if you suspect any problems with your PC.

NEW – Create Virtual Desktop Workspaces with WindowsPager

If you have never experienced using virtual desktop software you do not know what you are missing. It makes the computing experience a whole other dimension that enables you to multi-task like never before.

If you are new to using virtual desktop software, let me try to explain how this works and try to keep your attention long enough that you will give this a try.

You know how when you start your Windows computer and you see the desktop (that shows your icons and wallpaper)? Well, through the use of virtual desktop software you can create more than one instance of the desktop with the ability to toggle between each desktop. It is like having more than one computer screen available to you at a time.

One of my favorite virtual desktop software applications is called Dexpot; however, today I want to show you a NEW virtual desktop software application called WindowsPager that is very, very easy to use and makes for a good start for someone that has never used virtual desktop software before. As a matter of fact, due to the simplicity of WindowsPager, I (myself) use it constantly.

It is very simple to install and use…  Simply download [ CLICK HERE ] and run WindowsPager. You will immediately see at the bottom of your screen (near the Windows Tray) four little window panels or blocks.  Each of those four panels (or blocks) represent a separate desktop (to work from). For example you could click on Desktop 1 and browse the internet, while on Desktop 2 you type a letter, while on Desktop 3 you monitor the weather, etc.  Where I find using WindowsPager advantageous to me is when I am working on a blog post. It enables me to easily toggle from desktop to desktop to perform the functions that I need.

WindowsPager

I’m telling you, this stuff is very cool. WindowsPager is considered a portable app and can be run from your flash drive, if need be. It is Windows 2000/XP/Vista and 7 compatible. I have personally found this application to be very stable.

FEATURES:

  • virtual desktops, workspaces for Windows Vista/7/XP/2000
  • arrange your running applications on different desktops to improve overview
  • integration into the panel
  • several patterns possible
  • 64 bit support
  • move windows between desktops by drag ‘n drop or by using the window menu
  • optional keyboard shortcuts for switching the desktop
  • set a window “sticky”: always visible
  • “Mini-Windows” give an overview from each desktop
  • support for “Flashing-Windows” (notify for new messages in Mirc for example)
  • keep a window above all others by selecting “Keep on top” from the window menu
  • drag `n drop between desktops
  • dual/multi monitor support
  • no administrator rights necessary
  • no installation
  • safe: automatic window restore even on crash by use of two separate processes.

Geek Squeak (#111) – New Version of Web App Note

I personally love to follow the development of NEW applications; especially when the developer makes you part of the process. I recently posted an article about a NEW cloud computing application (that is totally FREE) called Web App Note (“Web App Note – A NEW Online Sticky Notes Type Program” ).

Following that article a reader of the blog pointed out a user friendly issue and the developer was right on top of it and fixed the issue to make using the application easier for the end-user (which is you and me).  As a result, Web App Note is worthy of a Geek Squeak!

Web App Note

Today, I found out that Web App Note has been upgraded to version 2.0 . I encourage you to try it out [ HERE ] .  Again, as mentioned in the previous article, there is nothing to install.  Simply visit the site, signup for an account, and you are good to go.

The developer of Web App Note is looking for feedback and ideas to improve the application.

New in version 2.0

  • Brand new layout from Alexis!
  • Notes are not just plain text!
  • Text formating in notes (see help (i))
  • Insert html tables
  • Urls are converted into html links
  • Create Google Calendar© reminders
  • Create a linked task (n)

Web App Note is not just about notes!

  • Up/download files from Dropbox©
  • Organize your notes with tabs
  • Tab area is adjusted at startup
  • Manage a task list
  • Emails sent from your Google account to import@webappnote.com are imported
  • Hotkey CTRL+S saves the note contents
