A summary of Today’s Geek Squeaks:

Squeak #1: Uninstalling security software should be straightforward, but it is not. Norton products are no exception. If you have a Norton product on your PC and you desire to uninstall it, make sure you download the Norton Removal Tool (see below);

Squeak #2: I came across some very good tips on what to look for when hiring a computer tech (see below);

Squeak #3: I have to let you know about this if you are an iPhone owner. Apple is releasing the NEW Apple iPhone 5S and 5C.  Difference between the two is that one built better and more expensive than the other. I found where the cheap one is still pretty expensive if you buy it unlocked (see below); AND,

Squeak #4: Nexus 4 is Google’s flagship smartphone. If you own one of these, I strongly suggest you protect your investment with one of these cases (see below);

Make Your Own Ringtones For Your iPhone (or Any Mobile Phone)

I recently had a friend who was looking for a method to create a personalized ringtone for their iPhone. What I found, that is quite easy to use, is an online application called Online Audio Cutter.

Online Audio Cutter

Online Audio Cutter is specifically geared toward cutting out sound segments from just about any audio or video format that you throw at it (see supported formats). The best part is that there is nothing to install. Simply visit the site, click on the Open File button (to select a file from your computer), select the interval you want to cut by moving the blue sliders, choose a format you wish to save a file in (the default format is MP3), click the Cut button, then click Download to save your computer.

During this process you will find that there is even a fade-in and fade-out function that will start your clipped file from silence and gradually make it louder; AND, also during this process when selecting the desired format, you will see an option specifically for the iPhone ringtone format.

Below you will find links on creating a ringtone (for your iPhone), transferring the file to your iPhone and even instructions on how to change the iPhone ringtone

In closing, one thing to point out here is that Online Audio Cutter can also be used to create ringtones for any mobile phone (not just the iPhone).

Discover Breaking News As Soon As It Breaks

Another sad day in the United States. Two bombs exploded in the crowded streets near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, killing three people and injuring more than 130 in a bloody scene of shattered glass and severed limbs that raised alarms that terrorists might have struck again in the U.S. – Source (AP)

I started thinking is there a service out there that can provide us with breaking news as it happens and push it out there to our computers, smartphones and tablets? Sadly, in today’s world, getting the news as fast as you can is important toward maintaining one’s safety.

The service I came across that pushes the biggest breaking stories as they happen, 24 hours a day, is called just that, Breaking News.

Breaking News App

Breaking News is part of the of the NBC News Digital Network; however, the service is a fully independent, agnostic news organization that brings you the biggest stories as they happen, 24 hours a day, from more than a 160 news and eyewitness sources across the globe. Breaking News also is available as an app that will work off of the Android, Kindle Fire, iPad, iPhone, Windows Phone, Windows 8 and Samsung Smart TV platforms.

Going back to this tragic event, my heart goes out to anyone that was a victim of this senseless act and I pray that the people of this country, who feel there is division, show the world that we are truly one nation under God that can come together in time of need.

Most Descriptive Listing of Windows 8 Keyboard Shortcuts

What most people do not know about Windows; and, especially Windows 8, is that nearly every type of function in Windows can be controlled directly from their keyboard via keyboard shortcuts.

For example, in Windows 8 the classic Start Menu is missing. As a result of no Start Menu, people are at a loss when it comes to shutting down their computer at the Windows 8 desktop level. This is where having knowledge of keyboard shortcuts can come in handy. In this scenario, simply hitting the Alt + F4 keys in combination will ultimately lead you to the Windows Shutdown dialog box where you can select the shutdown option.

image

The reason I inserted the statement “ultimately lead you to” in the previous sentence is that each time you hit Alt + F4, and you have any programs open, that keyboard combination will individually shut down each open program until you reach the desktop level.

Another favorite of mine for shutting down my computer in Windows 8 is simply hit the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys in combination. That will take you to the screen where you can lock the computer, sign out, change your password, launch the task manager and where a small power button (bottom right of the screen) is located to power off the computer.  This keyboard combination will work from the Windows 8 Start Screen level and the desktop level.

Today I went on the hunt for a listing of Windows 8 keyboard shortcuts and found many; however, the most visual descriptive listing I found was at a site called, ShortcutWorld.

ShortcutWorld

At  ShortcutWorld you can find every Windows 8 keyboard shortcut you can think of in the following categories:

  1. Getting around Windows 8 Start Screen and Desktop
  2. Windows 8 Charme Shortcuts
  3. Switch between Apps and Windows
  4. Power User Commands Shortcuts
  5. Managing Windows 8 Desktop Windows
  6. Windows 8 Taskbar
  7. Navigating Desktop
  8. Windows Explorer
  9. The Rest

Also, ShortcutWorld has put together a very nice PDF download of all of the Windows 8 shortcuts [HERE]

Use PDFProtect to Password Protect Your PDF Files

A couple days back I featured an article titled, “Storing and Opening Password Protected PDF Files Online Using Google Drive and SkyDrive”, that explained how Google Drive and SkyDrive have the ability to open password protected PDF files. The problem is, you may not have the software or may be in a situation away from your computer where you cannot perform this task. This is where the online service called PDFProtect can help you.

PDFProtect

Simply visit PDFProtect, upload your PDF file, create a password to protect your PDF file, select the encryption strength and if your file contains personal or confidential information select secure connection. Once the file has been uploaded and the password protection has been added, you will be prompted to download the PDF file that is now password protected. PDFProtect allows a file size up to 50 MB…

Add Annotations To Your Images With iPhotoDraw

There are numerous techniques to add text, arrows, dimensions, lines, callout boxes (balloons) etc. to an image; however, you need to be completely in tune (knowledgeable) with the software you are using to accomplish this. Even then it can be a hunt to find these options or features in the software, which can prove to be time consuming and frustrating.

Today I came across a freebie that is right down my alley and it is called iPhotoDraw. If you have any familiarity with the MS-Office products then you will have no problem with iPhoto.

iPhotoDraw

iPhotoDraw is strictly dedicated and designed software that allows you to add text descriptions, callout boxes (balloons), arrows, lines, and other annotations to your images. Two cool feature with iPhotoDraw that you do not find in other software of this type,  is that you can enlarge a specific area of an image to make it standout and you can add dimension information to a specific object in the image.

When adding these annotations to your image (or Photo), iPhotoDraw initially does not mess with the original image file; instead, the annotations are stored in a separate file (thus keeping the original intact). To make the annotations permanent to the original file, you have to go to the file menu and select the export option to save the file as a .jpg file.

If you are into any type of desktop publishing, graphic design, web page editing, Powerpoint Presentations, etc… iPhotoDraw is a freebie to grab! I would sure like to see a portable version of this…

When You Have To Go Nuclear and Restore The Settings On Your iPhone

Steve at Scoroncocolo sure catches my attention with some of the terminology he uses and his most recent article Reboot, Restore, Backup iPhone, is no exception. I especially liked the one section in his most recent article Restoring Your iPhone – The Nuclear Option. I don’t think I need to explain what he means by the term nuclear in this case.

image

The gist of his article is to provide us with instruction on differentiating between “a reboot and a restore (going nuclear)” and how to backup the iPhone.

Steve always contacts me and says, “hey take a look at this article”…  His enthusiasm is what draws me in and I feel he shares the same passion for information technology that I do; AND, as a result of this enthusiasm he feels compelled to share that enthusiasm with us all.  That is what a true blogger is! I truly enjoy promoting sites like this.

Take the time and drop by his site and if you are an iPhone owner, make sure to bookmark and read Reboot, Restore Backup iPhone.

Use Your iPhone, iPad or iPod as an External Disk with iPhone Explorer

I have had folks in the past ask me about methods to use to backup (or transfer) their files on their Apple products (such as the iPhone, iPad or iPod). I am no expert on any of those  products, by any means, but I do know that backing up or transferring (say music files) is pretty much a proprietary process (using apps such as iTunes, etc…).  Judging from the questions I am posed by owners of these products, those proprietary processes can be quite intimidating and apparently are confusing to the everyday user.

A FREE software application that I happened across, called iPhone Explorer, may be a helpful solution to the Apple folks out there, that will allow you to connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod to your Windows based computer via an USB connection. The benefit to this is that with this software installed, these devices in essence become an external disk where you will be able to browse the file structure of the device. There are other features to this software such as creating ringtones; however, the importance I am seeing here is the ability to access these Apple products via a non-proprietary method.

iPhone Explorer

I would be interested in hearing from anyone out there that has used this software to provide input on the usefulness of iPhone Explorer. I really like the concept here with this software.

With the iPhone Explorer can you look into the file system of your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch and down- and upload files by USB connection, regardless of whether file format. Within this function can use your iPhone/iPad/iPod as “external disk”. The program supports also a direct access to the photos, emails, SMS, videos directories of the iPhone. Herewith can you photos, emails, SMS, videos and all other files easily and simple copy to the computer. The same function is also available for videos, music (from iPod-App) and ringtones. One of the highlights of the iPhone Explorer is the creating of custom ringtones for the iPhone. With the comfortable ringtone editor can you use MP3, WAV, AIFF and M4A audio file formats. The ringtone editor can milliseconds accurately cut. However the song length is not limited to 32 seconds as iTunes.

According to the website, the following Apple products are currently supported:

Apple iOS 3.1.x, 4.x and 5 firmware devices
iPad 2
iPad
iPhone 4S
iPhone 4
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 3G
iPhone 2G
iPod Touch
iTunes 10

In the very near future you will spend more time talking to your phone than using your phone to talk to other people…

Steve over at Scoroncocolo contacted me about an article he posted that may be of great interest to all you smartphone users. The article is about smartphone voice recognition featuring the Siri, the iPhone 4s “personal assistant”.

image

Siri on iPhone 4s is one of the most incredible innovations in modern computing technology. This is another of Steve Jobs’ dreams that came true.

Siri on iPhone 4S lets you use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings, place phone calls, and more. Ask Siri to do things just by talking the way you talk. Siri understands what you say, knows what you mean, and even talks back. Siri is so easy to use and does so much, you’ll keep finding more and more ways to use it.

If you are an Android user, Steve will also point you to a couple of apps that are similar to Siri.

Without further ado, I encourage you to visit Scoroncocolo and read Steve’s article,  Smart Phone Voice Recognition Is the Future
