Split A PDF File Into One Or More Pieces

@ PDFSplit

I ran into a situation where I had a PDF document (actually a book), where I only needed certain page ranges. I went on the hunt and found an online (cloud) based application called PDFSplit. With PDFSplit you select a PDF file from your computer, your Google Drive account or your DropBox account. You can extract specific page ranges or you can break each page down into separate files. I found PDF Splitter to work wonderfully. Once the split has occurred you simply download your file.

Amazon Drops The Price On The Kindle Fire HD 8.9” Tablet

Back in January I featured the Kindle Fire HD tablet as the tech product of the week. This week is sort of a repeat on the Kindle Fire HD and the reason is simply this:  I noticed that Amazon has dropped the price $30 on the 8.9” Wi-Fi model and $100 on the 8.9” 4G LTE model (with data plans). I am sure this is to keep Amazon competitive and my guess is that they have something else coming at us on the horizon. If you want to get on board with a tablet, the Kindle HD Fire with the price drop is an excellent opportunity.

Storing and Opening Password Protected PDF Files Online Using Google Drive and SkyDrive

If you are concerned about security and storing personal document type files online, you may want to consider converting the document file to the PDF format, then password protecting the PDF file. Password protection of online files is one of the most requested features out there.

What I stumbled across, through experimentation, is that Google Drive and Microsoft SkyDrive can handle and open password protected PDF files, using their built-in (online) viewers. When you go to open a password protected PDF file using either of these services, you will be prompted for the password, and the PDF file will be opened online, without downloading, using either of these services.

image

This gives you an additional level of security protection when storing or sharing files using either of these services’ PLUS, the convenience of keeping the file online (and not downloading it). These were the only two file storage (and sharing) services I tested, where this will work; however, there may be other services, as well, that can handle or open a password protected PDF file. I also found that you need to be using a modern web browser, as well.

I know you are probably wondering, how do I convert my file to the Adobe PDF format and how do I password protect it?  The easiest way to do this is to download the FREE Nitro PDF Reader, which has a built in a PDF creator (or printer).

After you have downloaded and installed the Nitro PDF Reader, you will notice that when you go to print a document, you will see that a new printer is on the list called “Nitro PDF Creator (Reader)”.  If you want to convert the document to an Adobe PDF file, simply select the printer labeled “Nitro PDF Creator 2 (Reader”). Basically anything that can be printed on your computer to a regular printer can be printed to “Nitro PDF Creator 2 (Reader)”, including image files, spreadsheets, Powerpoint slides, etc…

image

Using Nitro PDF Reader you also have the ability to password protect  any PDF file you desire to create. When you go to print on your computer, the print dialog box typically appears. When it appears, select the “Nitro PDF Creator 2 (Reader)”, then click on and select “Preferences”.

image

Once you select preferences, the “Printing Preferences” dialog box appears. You will then notice a tab labeled “PDF Security”.  Click on that tab, click on “Require a password to open the document”, enter the desired password, then click on the “OK” button, then click on “Print” to generate (and create) a password protected PDF version of the document.

image

I know this may seem like a lot of steps, but really it is a cakewalk.  After you have created the password protected PDF file, then simply upload the file to either Google Drive or SkyDrive. Your file can now be stored and opened online, with the additional security of password protection.

Tech Product of the Week: Kindle Fire HD 7 Inch Tablet Computer

Looking for a tablet computer reminds me of the day when desktops started to flourish and everyone wanted one. It is like shopping for a car and by the end of the day you are more confused than you were at the beginning of the day.

Here is my take on Tablet Computers…  For the home based computer user, buy a reasonably priced Android OS based tablet, such as the Kindle Fire HD (7 inch). I cannot see putting out large amounts of money for a tablet; especially, when the next latest and greatest is just around the corner. We are only seeing the beginning of this type of technology.

I recently got my hands on the Kindle Fire HD and was very impressed. With the Kindle Fire you are really getting a great tablet that features a high definition display, great sound (Dolby Audio), dual-antenna Wi-Fi, a massive selection of Android Apps and much, much more for under $200…  I especially liked that the Fire has a Micro USB 2.0 port (for connection of a PC) and a Micro-HDMI port for high definition video output to a television. Many of the other 7 inch tablets lack these external connectivity options.  All-In-All, for the home based computer user, the Kindle Fire HD is a tablet to consider.

How To Check If Your PC Is Ready For The Windows 8 Upgrade?

The release date for Windows 8 is tomorrow (October 26th) and if you are planning to upgrade you will be given the opportunity to download Windows 8 Pro (Professional) for $39.99…  [CLICK HERE] to learn more about the upgrade process and cost. It is the lowest cost I have ever witnessed for any Windows OS upgrade; however, make sure you do your homework first and don’t jump into this. Make sure you have all of your personal files backed up.

Windows 8

Personally, for the first time ever (and I do not know why) I have not even touched any of the Windows 8 beta or preview releases. Maybe I am looking for the challenge if I do opt to upgrade OR it is my gut telling me to play this out for awhile.

I will tell you this… For the everyday desktop or notebook computer user, Windows 8 is going to present you with some cosmetic and navigational changes over what you have been used to. For example, the first thing that is going to capture your attention is that there is no start menu button. Instead there is a start screen. You also have to know that this version of Windows is being driven by the new world of tablet PC’s and as a result you will see many flavors of Windows 8 based tablet computers. Microsoft has even produced their own tablet computer called Surface that will be in direct competition with Google’s Nexus 7, Apple’s iPad and Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD.

Windows 8, I am sure, is an awesome and stable operating system; however, if you are running a desktop or notebook computer, with the intent to upgrade, you may want to download and run the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant.

Download Upgrade Assistant

The Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant will scan your computer to see if it is compatible with Windows 8. You can download the upgrade assistant [HERE].  Per the Microsoft web site, the assistant will do four main things:

It scans your hardware, apps, and connected devices to see if they’ll work with Windows 8. Make sure all the peripheral devices that you need to work with your PC, like printers and monitors, are connected to your PC and turned on before you run Upgrade Assistant.

Upgrade Assistant checks your PC hardware to see if it meets the Windows 8 system requirements to install on your PC, including features of the processor such as CPU speed, PAE, NX, and SSE2, as well as RAM size and hard disk capacity. It also checks for compatibility of your currently installed apps and devices.

It provides a compatibility report. Windows 8 generally works with the same apps and devices that work with Windows 7, but in some cases, a product might need an update, or you might need to uninstall and reinstall it after you upgrade. The compatibility report lists your apps and devices that will work in Windows 8, those that might not work, and what you can do to get them working again after you upgrade. If some of your apps and devices aren’t listed, it might be because we don’t have compatibility info for that product yet. For more info on specific products, check the Windows Compatibility Center, or contact the product manufacturer.

You can save or print the compatibility report to use later. Unless you choose the option to “keep nothing” during the upgrade, you’ll be able to find the report on your desktop after the upgrade. For more info, see Get your apps and devices working in Windows 8.

It checks your PC for support of certain Windows 8 features. Specifically: the Windows Store, snap, secure boot, and multitouch. If your PC doesn’t support one or more of these features you’ll see a warning. You’ll still be able to installWindows 8, but specific features won’t be available to you.

It provides the option to buy, download, and install Windows 8. If your PC is ready to go, Upgrade Assistant provides a recommendation on which edition to buy, and walks you through the steps to upgrade.

Pin Anything To The Taskbar With Taskbar Pinner

Today I came across a one of the kind, really useful tool, called Taskbar Pinner that makes pinning anything to the Windows 7 or Windows 8 taskbar an easy task.

Taskbar Pinner

Taskbar Pinner is portable; therefore, simply download, run, and select from Pin a File, Pin a Folder, Pin a Shell Location (i.e. control panel, recycle bin, etc…) or Pin a Library (such as your document, music, picture or video folder). You can also check “Explorer context menu” which allows you to use Taskbar Pinner in Windows explorer. To read more details on Taskbar Pinner [ click here ]

  • to pin ANYfile regardless of its type;
  • to pin ANYfolder;
  • to pin drive;
  • to pin Control Panel items, all them including some hidden like God Mode/All Tasks, Network Connections;
  • to pin Libraries;
  • to pin Shell Objects like Run command, “Miminze All”, Window Switcher;
  • to pin any drive,all folders and all files via Explorer Context Menu;
  • to pin any folders or files with drag and drop. Drop them on application window.
  • to pin any folders or files via command line:taskbarpinner.exe "path\to\desired\location"

Note:One thing I ran into is that when I went to extract the dowloadable Taskbarpinner zip file (that contains the Windows 7 and Windows 8 versions), I was prompted to overwrite the files.  If that occurs, simply select “no” and the file will extract properly.  Otherwise, the program works as indicated…  Also, if you try to run the Windows 7 version on Windows 8 (and vice versus), the program will crash.

An Alt-Tab Switcher That Uses Screen Hotspots

Here is a really cool utility (portable app), called Win7se, that you simply download, run and then place your mouse pointer in any of the four corners (hotspots) of your screen for the magic to happen.

Win7se

For example, if I place my mouse pointer in the top left of the screen, the Windows 7 Alt-Tab Switcher will come up allowing me to toggle between any of the multiple apps I have running. If I place the pointer in the top right corner of the screen my desktop and desktop icons will (overlay) appear on top of whatever I am working on allowing me to start another application. If I place the mouse pointer in the bottom left corner of the screen, the monitor display will go to sleep. If I place the pointer in the bottom right corner of the screen my screensaver will start.

Each of these four corner hotspots are configurable (to a certain degree), by simply right mouse clicking the Win7se icon in the system tray and selecting “Settings”.  At this point you can select how you want each hotspot to respond.  Win7se, I am finding, is a very clever and handy tool.
