Haystack TV For Your Chromecast

On Black Friday I took advantage of the $25 Chromecast and installed it on my TV in my garage. My wife hasn’t seen me since. You can still take advantage of the $25 Chromecast at the official Google site (click here), until December 24th. After getting the Chromecast I was like a kid with a new toy and it wasn’t long before I was looking for Chromecast ready apps (that you install on your Android phone or tablet then cast or display on the TV).

One of my favorites so far, is Haystack TV… In a nutshell it is like a high-def visual feed reader that specializes mostly in news; however, I found that you can customize (search for and save sources & topics) that can be quite entertaining (like late night TV segments).  Even if you do not have a Chromecast, Haystack TV is worth downloading on your smartphone or tablet.

   Haystack TV: Daily News- screenshot

Haystack TV is a free and Google Cast™ Ready app, a great alternative to cable news. Haystack has featured repeatedly for Chromecast and Android TV the latest politics, local, national and world news from top news organizations such as CNN, AP, MSNBC, NYTimes and the BBC.

Keep An Eye On Your Latest RSS News Feeds With Desktop Ticker

I am big into RSS feeds (Really Simple Syndication), by using the likes of Feedly (RSS Feed Reader) to keep track of what is going on in the world. I currently have a large collection of feeds that I follow. RSS gives you the ability to track multiple news sources quickly and efficiently by giving you (in most cases, depending on how you configure the feed) the headlines with bits and pieces of the story. Once you see something of interest you can go to it by clicking on the feed link. You can grasp a whole lot of information with RSS feeds. It has been an invaluable tool to me with locating resources for the blog.

Now that you have somewhat of a feel what a RSS feed is, you may want to take a look at Desktop Ticker which is a FREE scrolling desktop ticker that you can load feeds into that will scroll the latest feeds across your desktop (much like what you see on TV when they scroll the news across the screen).

Desktop Ticker is a free RSS and Atom web feed aggregator application that allows you to keep an eye on the latest news from your favourite websites whilst you work on your computer. Once feeds have been added, the article titles scroll horizontally across the screen. Article summaries are displayed when the mouse cursor is placed over an article title, and the full article can be opened in a web browser by clicking on the article title. The RSS feeds are automatically downloaded after the specified interval to show updated content.

Desktop Ticker

What I like about Desktop Ticker is that it is FREE; can be downloaded as a portable app; and, can be fully customized. For example, the graphic you see above is close to the default size. What I ended up doing was increasing the font (to size 18) which will change the ticker to a very readable size. If you notice below, you will see my browser window is open and the ticker is at the top of the screen. Keep in mind this is a cropped screenshot and that the ticker stretches across the length of the screen. You can float the ticker or tell it to pin to the top or bottom of the screen. Personally I like it at the top of the screen.

Desktop Ticker

There are many (very easy to use) configuration settings that you can manage to customize Desktop Ticker to your personal taste. Very nicely done software that has an easy learning curve and serves a good purpose (especially for a newshound like myself).

Site Changes At What’s On My PC…

The landscape of information technology is constantly changing and the changes occurring now are more than ever before. I have also noticed that the landscape of blogging about information technology has changed as well, with visitor’s wanting to read less; but,  see more…

As a result, I have decided to make some changes that hopefully will be pleasing to you:

1 – The first change is that I am now posting Geek Squeaks’ on a regular basis. I have been playing around with this for about a month and it seems to be taking off quite nicely. Geek Squeaks’ is a roundup and review of anything IT related that I think you need to know… It is also of great benefit to me, due it keeps me in touch with the IT world. Occasionally, you may see a single article or a guest post.

2 – At the top of the blog you will notice that I have changed the tabs. Two of the tabs are links that are internal to the blog (i.e. Home and About) . The new editions are four tabs that are links that are external to the blog (Bookmarks4Techs, GE Geek, Downloads and Tech News). What I am trying to do here, is give you good quality resources to current tech sites, software & apps, and tech news.

3 – I will also will be updating the sidebar and the blogroll.  Sites that are on the blogroll and have not posted during the past year will be removed.

I truly hope you enjoy the changes and feel the need to visit (and comment) on a regular basis.  What’s On My PC is closing in on the 2 million mark and I feel I may have another million left in me to keep going. Just felt the need to mix it up a little…

Your Passwords Must Have Length and Complexity

What you know about password security is probably wrong, is the title of an article I came across at FierceCIO:TechWatch. It really caught my eye and I think it is important that I pass the most important part of this article on to you:

Passwords that are longer than eight characters are a must, and they should also involve a good mix of upper case characters, numbers and symbols. In addition, a level of randomness is required too, which automatically precludes any word or combination of words found in the dictionary – FierceCIO:TechWatch.

There are so many people that I know who use very simple passwords and do not ever change them. It is a hard sell to get them to change there way of thinking and to change their passwords. If anything, please use the advice given above for those accounts that are super important to you! If you don’t, you are postured for potential compromise of the account.

Discover Breaking News As Soon As It Breaks

Another sad day in the United States. Two bombs exploded in the crowded streets near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, killing three people and injuring more than 130 in a bloody scene of shattered glass and severed limbs that raised alarms that terrorists might have struck again in the U.S. – Source (AP)

I started thinking is there a service out there that can provide us with breaking news as it happens and push it out there to our computers, smartphones and tablets? Sadly, in today’s world, getting the news as fast as you can is important toward maintaining one’s safety.

The service I came across that pushes the biggest breaking stories as they happen, 24 hours a day, is called just that, Breaking News.

Breaking News App

Breaking News is part of the of the NBC News Digital Network; however, the service is a fully independent, agnostic news organization that brings you the biggest stories as they happen, 24 hours a day, from more than a 160 news and eyewitness sources across the globe. Breaking News also is available as an app that will work off of the Android, Kindle Fire, iPad, iPhone, Windows Phone, Windows 8 and Samsung Smart TV platforms.

Going back to this tragic event, my heart goes out to anyone that was a victim of this senseless act and I pray that the people of this country, who feel there is division, show the world that we are truly one nation under God that can come together in time of need.

Two NEW Enhancements at Bookmarks4Techs.com

If you have not visited Bookmarks4Techs.com recently, I encourage you to do so. Don’t let the name of the site lead you to believe that the site is only for techs. Bookmarks4Techs is one of the largest collection of links to computer information technology sites and news on the internet. If you have a passion for computer information technology, to include software, apps, cloud computing, desktop computing, tablet computing, smartphones, etc…, then this site is for you. I can guarantee that you will keep up-to-date with the latest and greatest by visiting the links I have posted on the site.

Bookmarks4Techs.com

Not only will you find one of the largest collection of links to computer and information technology sites on the internet, you will now find two NEW enhancements to the site.

  1. Tech News – As you scroll down the listing of links, on the homepage, you will notice RSS news feeds for some of the most popular tech sites and blogs on the internet. These feeds automatically update so that when you come back to visit, there is always something new.  I actually use this to get my daily dose of tech news and to see what is new on some of my favorite blogs.
  2. Archived Blog Posts – The archive is a brainstorm idea that I came up with that list links to every single blog article ever posted at What’s On My PC. As I continue to post here at What’s On My PC, the archive at Bookmarks4Techs will continue to grow. As of today’s post, I currently have archived links to 1,457 posts.

A Free Clipboard Manager That Saves Every Text and Image You Copy to the Clipboard

Typically when you cut or copy text (or an image), it is saved transparently to the Windows clipboard. The problem with this operation is that if you perform a cut or copy operation multiple times, the previous instance of what you cut or copied is wiped from the clipboard.

Free Clipboard ManagerA solution to this problem is to use a clipboard manager that allows you to save multiple instances of a cut/copy operation. Today I want to lead you to really neat clipboard manager, that is relatively new, that is portable and will allow you to copy and store multiple instances of text and images.  It is called Free Clipboard Manager

Free Clipboard Manager

Free Clipboard Manager

Free Clipboard Manager

Free Clipboard Manager saves every text and image that is copied in the clipboard! This is useful if you have to take a lot of screenshots or if you need to access to multiple notes of part of code without the need to paste them in a text editor. Simply hit CTRL-C or PRINT SCREEN to save automatically the clipboard content to hdd! To copy them back to clipboard, select the item, right click with the mouse and select “copy item to clipboard”. The saved content can also be accessed with explorer. Everything is saved in the directory “clipboard”. The software also has an option to prevent user/password to be saved to hdd. Selecting the option “don’t save text with less than 20 chars”, user and password with less than 20 chars, are only copied to clipboard.

News360 – Next Generation News Aggregation Service

One of the first things I do in the morning is preview the News from various sources on the internet. Recently I came across a news aggregation service, called News360, that not only is attractive but brings the news to you in a format that allows you to grasp up-to-date news events in a much broader sense. If you are not a news junkie, you soon will be once you experience News360 .

News360

Using News360 I get the true feeling that I can take in more information in a shorter element of time. This service uses a semantic analysis to inform you of major ongoing events and give you the news that is relevant to you. Once you find a news story that is of interest you click on it and an abbreviated version of the story will appear with tab options available that allow you to select and navigate to other media sources featuring the same story. You can go to the actual news source (or web page) featuring the story at any time from News360.

You are not required to signup for an account; however, I do recommend doing so. You will need a Facebook or Twitter account to signup. Once your account is setup you can then personalize News360 to pull down news from specific sources and save those sources under “My Interests” and/or “My Stories”.

News360 apps are available for the following platforms: iPhone, iPad, Win Phone 7, Playbook, Android and the Web.

Big News This Past Week That Will Impact the World of Computing As We Know It

What I find so interesting these days is that we have so much information thrown at us in terms of “news” that we often are unable to process it all. This past week two major news events in the world of technology occurred that could impact the world of computing as we know it. What was interesting about this, prior to myself posting this article, is that I asked people, did you know or hear about Google buying Motorola Mobility and about Hewlett Packard’s exit from personal computers??? Not one person I conversed with knew about these hot news items…

image

The news about Google and Motorola Mobility is a strange (and suspicious) acquisition in itself. Google has been under the gun from patent infringement actions by Apple and Microsoft, as a result of its’ Android mobile operating system; and, some say this acquisition is a counter move or leverage tactic to protect itself. Pretty complex stuff, but this acquisition is another example of a big dog gaining control over the toys we use and buy (especially the Android driven smartphones and tablet PCs).

The news about Hewlett Packard dropping their personal computers just literally put me in shock. I have always owned HP computers in my home and now I guess I will really have to build my own : ) . In all seriousness, this news is like suicide. HP’s stock dropped big time over this news; plus the HP Touchpad Tablet PC that they just put out there, in July (at $499 for the base model) has become a boat anchor and can be had (if you push the internet envelope) for as low as $99.

In all my years of computing I have seen things come and go and understandably so when computing was in its’ early development; but, in today’s world of computing to see news like this has me wondering what direction are we really heading into.

To help bring you up to speed on these hot news topics involving Google and Hewlett Packard here are two articles you can jump to that really brings it home:

A Treemap Visualization of the Daily News

If you are a computer person then you most likely heard of treemap visualizations to view hard disk usage statistics. One such example that comes to mind is WinDirStat. This article is not about WinDirStat, but is about an online application, called Newsmap, that gathers vast amounts of news articles (from the Google News Aggregator) and presents the news in a treemap visualization format. The power of this is that you can visually take in more information and readily pick out, from the treemap, what news has been given the most coverage. Newsmap has become one of my daily reads and is very easy to learn and use.

Newsmap

Newsmap is an application that visually reflects the constantly changing landscape of the Google News news aggregator.

A treemap visualization algorithm helps display the enormous amount of information gathered by the aggregator. Treemaps are traditionally space-constrained visualizations of information. Newsmap‘s objective takes that goal a step further and provides a tool to divide information into quickly recognizable bands which, when presented together, reveal underlying patterns in news reporting across cultures and within news segments in constant change around the globe.

Newsmap can be customized for your personal use to display news from various countries and can be further personalized to provide news from specific news categories (such as world news, business news, sports, entertainment, health, technology, etc.)

Glide Through the News with HuffPost NewsGlide

We all have our preferences when it comes to reading the current  news on the internet, whether it  be visiting the news sites directly or reliance on RSS news feeds.

One of my favorite “go to” news sites, is the sometimes controversial Huffington Post. If you are not familiar with the Huffington Post, it is an excellent aggregate news source that provides news in a broad range of categories (such as politics, media, business, entertainment, living, style, the green movement, world news, comedy, news, blogs, and original content). As a matter of fact there is so much news on the Huffington Post that it is hard to keep up with it, until now.

Using current advancements in web page and web browser technology, Huffington Post has come up with an unique “glide type” interface, called HuffPost NewsGlide that makes reading the news ultra fast.

The graphic representation below really does not provide a full visual representation of how HuffPost NewsGlide works; therefore it is best to visit the site to really experience it.

HuffPost NewsGlide

When you visit the site, you will see horizontal visual strips of news stories in different categories. If you have a mouse with a mouse wheel, which is most common these days, you can hover the mouse pointer over one of the strips and rotate the mouse wheel to glide through the various news stories.  If you prefer to not use the mouse wheel, you will see navigation arrows appear on the screen when you place the mouse pointer to the right side of one of the news strips. Once you find a news story that interests you, click on it and the story will load to the right side of the browser window.  Once you are done reading, close the news story and continue gliding.

Features:

Constantly updated
Easy navigation
Scan through the latest headlines
Flip through sections
Quick read articles
Social sharing functions
Pull up article comments in one click
