How can I download a video posted on Facebook?

This is a question I recently searched for using Google. What I found is that there is no easy way on Facebook to download a video that has been posted by another party; however, I did find savefrom.net that will download a Facebook video providing you have the URL for the video.

To get the URL, simply right mouse click on the video, click on “show video URL”, then click on the “URL” (to highlight it), then hit “Ctrll+C” to copy the URL to the clipboard (or you can right mouse click and select “copy” which will copy the URL to the clipboard). After you have copied the URL to the clipboard, go to savefrom.net and enter the URL in the input field at the top of the main page. This action should present a download button where you can initiate the download (which will either be in MP4-HD or MP4-SD file formats).

With safefrom.net you can also download audio, video, and other types of files from various websites and social networks such as youtube.com, vk.com, vimeo.com, and others.

Split A PDF File Into One Or More Pieces

@ PDFSplit

I ran into a situation where I had a PDF document (actually a book), where I only needed certain page ranges. I went on the hunt and found an online (cloud) based application called PDFSplit. With PDFSplit you select a PDF file from your computer, your Google Drive account or your DropBox account. You can extract specific page ranges or you can break each page down into separate files. I found PDF Splitter to work wonderfully. Once the split has occurred you simply download your file.

Today’s Geek Squeaks – August 29, 2013

A summary of Today’s Geek Squeaks:

Squeak #1: Bing Powered OCR (optical character resolution) is a new feature in SkyDrive that gives you the ability to extract text from photos. This is useful in the event you snap a photo of a document and you need to capture the text from that document for printing and/or saving to another format.  Very cool stuff (see below);

Squeak #2: Today I am featuring a portable app that I highly recommend.  It is called WinScanPDF; which gives you the ability to scan documents and convert them to the Adobe PDF format.  Very handy (see below);

Squeak #3: 404 Tech Support has pointed out something bad about the trial antivirus software that is installed on new computers. We are actually setting ourselves up for a fall once the trial expired. The article also explains, “how to” return the computer to the default state of using the antivirus software that is already installed (Microsoft Defender); AND,

Squeak #4: Here of late I have featured several bluetooth speakers. Today this one is from BOSE and it is awesome (good customer reviews)…

Use Wikipedia’s Book Creator To Compile Multiple Articles Into A PDF File

Did you know that buried on the left side column of any Wikipedia article, under the Print/Export selection there is a selection for Create A Book?

Wikipedia

What this is handy for is compiling multiple articles together into a PDF file. There are several other eBook formats available, as well.  Also, if you prefer to not create a book you can download specific Wikipedia pages and articles as a PDF file. I know many folks, especially students, when doing research using Wikipedia, end up printing the page in its’ native html format when they could be saving the information electronically.

Sumatra PDF Reader Outguns Adobe PDF Reader

If you do not need all of the features of the  Adobe PDF Reader (which 99.9 percent of you don’t), then install the Sumatra PDF Reader to view those PDF files. You will not regret it; and will immediately notice that the lightweight Sumatra’s PDF load time is noticeably faster compared to the heavyweight Adobe PDF Reader.

SumatraPDF

Version 2.0 of Sumatra was recently released which is a welcoming sign that the developer continues to improve Sumatra without overburdening it with features that you will never use. Sumatra is available as a normal software installation or as a Portable App.

A FREE Online PDF to Word Conversion Service

Yesterday’s post featured a FREE PDF to Excel Conversion Service that led me to look for (and find) a FREE PDF to Word Conversion Service (called Free PDF to Word Online).

PDF to Word

I don’t know if you are like me, but I find myself using Microsoft Word a lot more than Excel (but, that’s just me) and the majority of PDF files you are going to come across are text based documents.

The beauty of this online converter is that once the conversion is completed, you can fully edit the document in Microsoft Word. During the conversion process you are given option of converting the PDF file to a docx file (as typically seen as the default in MS-Word 2010), a doc file (as typcially seen as the default in MS-Word 2003) and a rtf file (rich text format).

You are limited to uploading a 10 MB PDF file with this service and there is an option for uploading the PDF directly from a website source. Following the upload of your PDF file, you can either wait for a download link to appear OR if you do not want to wait, just leave your email address and you will receive an email when the file is ready for download.

Nice service with excellent output results; however, the file upload size could be a little more heftier.

A FREE Online PDF to Excel Conversion Service

A reader of the blog recently contacted me and pointed me to an online PDF to Excel Conversion Service that is quite nice. What is unique here is that we typically see converters that specialize in moving (or converting) documents to the PDF format; not the other way around. I checked out this service and found that PDF files where tables were embedded converted nicely and represented both the row and column structure (as seen in Excel). Once the table is in the Excel format you can then implement your formulas and calculations as you would in an Excel spreadsheet.

PDF to EXCEL

According to the privacy policy of this service, any files you upload to be converted are deleted automatically following the conversion AND the converted file remains on the server for a period of 24 hours to give you enough time to download it. There is a 30 MB limitation on the file you desire to upload and convert.

Save A File As A PDF File In Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010

Years ago when I was working as a Computer Information Specialist, where you had to be the “jack of all trades and master of none” , I was often called upon to find ways to convert Microsoft Office files to the Adobe PDF file format. I often had to jump through a bunch of hoops to get it done. Today, that has all changed… There are PDF converters everywhere; AND, to make it even easier the newer generations of Microsoft Office (2007 and 2010) now have an option available where you can save an Office file as a PDF file. To no surprise (to me), most people using Office 2007 and 2010 are unaware of the PDF “save as” option and end up expending a lot of their time looking for solution.

image

The PDF file format is an excellent way to share a file and retain the original format that deters others from making changes to the content of the file. The PDF file format has been around for many years and is widely accepted (as a standard) worldwide with many agencies and organizations. Numerous viewers are available that make it possible for anyone to view a PDF file.

To save a file in Microsoft Office 2007 (to include, Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, Publisher, Visio and Word) you generally can get to the PDF option by clicking on the Microsoft Office button, point to the arrow next to Save As, and then click PDF.  You will have to give the file a name.  Depending on what Microsoft product you are using, the Office button may not be an available feature. Typically in that case go to the File Menu to perform a similar action as already described. Best way to learn, with whatever Microsoft product you use, is just do it and you will (learn) and will find the option I am referring to.  If you are totally lost, [click here] for more detailed instructions.

To save a file in Microsoft Office 2010 (to include, Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, Publisher, Project, Visio and Word) you generally can get to the PDF option by clicking on the File Tab, click Save As, and in the Save as type list, click PDF (*.pdf). Again, you will have to give the file a name.  If you need further instruction (with more detail), [click here].

Please keep in mind that when you save a file in Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010, using the PDF format, you will not be able reopen that file in Microsoft Office to edit the file. Typically, what I do first is save the file as a native Microsoft file (as the original working document). Then if I want to distribute the file as a PDF, I will bring up the original and save it to the PDF format.  In the end, I have my original version of the document (which I can edit) and the PDF version of the document (which cannot be edited).

Nitro – A PDF Reader that is a Whole Lot More

I believe I may have found a PDF utility, called Nitro PDF Reader, that just may be the answer to managing all of my PDF file needs. For an application that is described as a PDF reader, this app is that and a whole lot more. As a matter of fact I think it should be called a PDF Utility instead of a PDF Reader (make sure you read the “cool factor” below).

Nitro PDF Reader
Nitro PDF Reader

Nitro is a FREE PDF reader that is very modern in appearance and functionality. Nitro uses the ribbon menu model from Microsoft Office and uses enhanced navigation panes to get the job done.  Nitro is currently in beta.

Nitro PDF Reader - Ribbon Interface

Nitro Reader is currently in Beta and it’s a brand new product. It’s ready to be used, and everything works, but the purpose of a Beta is to test the software beyond anything we can do internally, and get the feedback from our users and beyond that will shape the its long-term direction and development.

The “cool factor” to Nitro that I really like is this; not only is Nitro a PDF reader, but it is a PDF Printer (creator), as well. If you are not familiar with a PDF printer, then you do not know what you are missing. Instead of using your printer (and wasting paper), you can use a PDF printer to electronically (and virtually) print your documents, web pages, etc. The documents that you print are automatically saved as a PDF file on your computer for future reference. Instead of using your physical printer to print a document, you would select Nitro PDF Creator from the printer list. Granted, there are occasions that you need to print hard copies; however, I will guarantee you that once you learn to use a PDF printer, you will save paper and ink. I am finding that Nitro is an excellent choice for this.

A whole lot more…

With Nitro you can also add notes, highlight text, add comments,  extract text, extract images, fill in forms, type directly onto any  existing PDF document and work with multiple PDF documents at the same time.

In summary, for a FREE PDF Reader Nitro rocks! In my opinion there is not any other FREE PDF app out there (that I know of) that possesses the added functionality that this reader (by default) provides. I encourage you visit the site [ HERE ] to learn more about this FREE app.

Gmail is getting better and better…

GmailDid you know that if you have a Gmail account (Google’s popular email service) you can view PDF files, Powerpoint files and TIFF files? For example, if someone sends you Powerpoint slides as an email attachment in your Gmail, you can view the slides without installing the Powerpoint viewer; OR, if someone sends you a PDF file (Adobe’s Portable Document Format) you can view the PDF file without installing a PDF viewer. The Tiff format is a format that is commonly used when sending faxes.  The online Gmail viewer for these file formats is powered by Google Docs. You can read more about  these features on the “Official Gmail Blog”. If you do not have a Gmail account I encourage you to sign up for an account [ HERE ] to take full advantage of Gmail and all of the services that Google has to offer.

An “Adobe PDF Reader” Replacement…

When with think of “PDF” files, we think “Adobe” …  Adobe created the PDF file format (Portable Document Format), in 1993, which became a standard format for document exchange.  In order to view PDF files you need a PDF reader.  The Adobe PDF Reader is the software most people have installed on their computers.  Since the inception of the Adobe PDF Reader it has grown into a large application that has become burdensome to the user and to the computer.

There is another option and it is called “Foxit Reader” …  It is “FREE”, small in file size, super fast, and it is continually being improved upon.  According to their web site there are 50 million users all around the world.  Another nice option with this reader is that there is a “portable” version (zip file) that can be installed on your flash drive.  I have been using Foxit for approximately 2.5 years and it has never let me down.
