Learn How To Find and Use The Windows Snipping Tool

May 18, 2017

A forgotten feature (or app) in Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 is the Windows screen capture utility, called the “Snipping Tool”. Personally, I use a third party screen capture utility called FSCapture; but, there are more times than I can remember where I was away from my computer (such as at work) and needed to quickly capture something on the screen and did not have FSCapture available.

If you are not familiar with the “Snipping Tool”; it is a built-in Windows Accessory (software app), once launched, that gives you the ability to take a snapshot of anything you see on your screen, whether it be full screen or just a specific region of the screen. After you take the screenshot, you can then save it to various graphic file formats (such as PNG, JPG GIF), that can be inserted in a document, sent via email, archived, etc… As a blogger, I would be lost without a screen capture utility and my productivity (and presentation) would diminish.

Typically, on Windows 10, the tool can be found under the Windows Accessories folder on the Start Menu; however, here is several ways to get to it, using the search box, on Windows 10, 8.1 and 7:

For Windows 10 – Select the Start  button, type snipping tool in the search box on the taskbar, and then select Snipping Tool from the list of results.

For Windows 8.1 / Windows RT 8.1 – Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Search (or if you’re using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Search), type snipping tool in the search box, and then select Snipping Tool from the list of results.

For Windows 7 – Select the Start  button, then type snipping tool in the search box, and then select Snipping Tool from the list of results.

In Snipping Tool, select Mode (in older versions, select the arrow next to the New button), choose the kind of snip you want, and then select the area of your screen that you want to capture. After you are satisfied with the result, simply save it to the file format you desire.

FireShot – Google Chrome Extension to Take Screenshots

December 30, 2016

I recently installed FireShot and have been quite impressed. FireShot is a Google Chrome browser extension that gives you the very convenient ability to capture screenshots. You can quickly capture full web pages in their entirety; capture only visible portions of the screen; or, capture selective areas on the screen. Once you make the screen capture you can save the screenshot to disk (as a PDF, JPeg, or Png) or you can copy it to the clipboard.

Malwarebytes’ Junkware Removal Tool

May 2, 2016

… and, MORE GREAT GEEK SQUEAK STUFF (#2016-018)

Malwarebytes has a junkware removal tool that I was unaware about that will aggressively perform the following tasks:

  • Removes adware that spawn popup ads, such as Conduit
  • Uninstalls unwanted toolbars and browser helper objects, including the Ask and Babylon toolbars
  • Removes potentially unwanted programs (PUPs)
  • Cleans up traces left behind by PUPs

I am a big user of the Malwarebyte products and decided to give this tool a test run. To run the tool, simply download and run it. A command-line window will open up that will prompt you to hit a key on your keyboard to launch the program.  If you have any browser windows open, they will automatically be closed. In the end I found that the tool is pretty aggressive in its’ cleaning to the point it actually removed one of my Chrome browser extensions that I use on a regular basis.  With that being said, I recommend you make a note of what extensions you have. If you are in a situation where you find your PC running slow and suspect an infection, you may want to run this tool.

Free Alternative to Office365 Called Open365I Love Free Software has a great article about LibreOffice’s new alternative to Office365 called Open365. After reading the article I went ahead and opened an account (for FREE) at Open365  (which appears to be in beta). Once I opened the account, client software was downloaded to my PC; which, I opted to not install. Instead, I went directly to the cloud-based version of Open365. First impression, not bad…  Will be keeping an eye on this.

Geek Squeaks #2015-6 @ What’s On My PC (Featuring – Did You Know Windows 10 Is Sharing Your Computer?)

August 4, 2015

Windows 10 Is Sharing Your Computer By Default – I found this article on PCWorld (How to stop Windows 10 from using your PC’s bandwidth to update strangers’ systems) that explains how Microsoft is a using a new peer-to-peer (P2P) delivery update mechanism (in Windows 10) that turns your Windows 10 PC (by default) into a server for distributing updates to other machines.

Hmmm…  I’m not liking the sound of this. Anyhow, the setting or toggle to turn this off is buried in the update and security settings.  CLICK HERE to learn how to turn this off.

Need advice for buying a Smartphone? – I am pretty seasoned when it comes to computers and smartphones, but when it comes to shopping for either (especially smartphones) I soon become discombobulated (in a state of confusion). To help you folks out there looking for a smartphone, be sure to read Best Android smartphones for work and play (Aug 2015 edition) at ZDNet….

Make Sure You Check Out This Screen Capture Program – I use screen capture utilities on a daily basis and would be lost without one. A new kid on the block recently to me is ShareX. This utility is being updated regularly and the most recent update allows you to either perform a full installation or the option to install the program as a portable app. Very nice screen capture program that does not disappoint. Best thing about ShareX is that it is FREE, Open Source and there are no embedded advertisements.

If you need to install or reinstall Windows 10 – As a reminder, if you need to reinstall Windows 10 (for whatever reason), make sure you are prepared.  CLICK HERE to create your own Windows 10 installation media using either a USB flash drive or a DVD.
