Quick Tip: Cleaning Your Smartphone Screen

Long Story Short: Buy a cleaning kit made exclusively to clean the screen on your smartphone.  Smartphones are not cheap and the last thing you want to do is ruin the screen on your phone. You will see various DIY mixtures, but I have found it is best to get a product that is already packaged in a spray bottle that often comes packaged with a lint-free microfibre cloth. You will not regret it and you will find you will be cleaning and sanitizing your phone more often. Always spray the solution on the cloth and not directly on your phone or other devices.

What you don’t want to do: Due to the special coating on many of these smartphones, do not use household cleaners such as window cleaners, aerosol spray cleaners, solvents of any kind, bleach, ammonia, undiluted alcohol, or hydrogen peroxide.

Where to buy: If you look on Amazon (click here) you will find an array of products made exclusively to clean smartphones. The one that I specifically selected is the WHOOSH! Screen Cleaner Kit. The cleaner is designed to clean eyeglasses, smartphone, laptops, tablets, HDTV’s, and wearable tech, such as smartwatches. The kit is reasonably priced and ships with a large and small (portable) container of the cleaner with Two 6′ x 6′ cloths + BONUS Poo cloth.

My Review of the Actiontec ScreenBeam Mini 2

The Actiontec ScreenBeam Mini 2 is a wireless stick that plugs into an HDMI connection (or port) on your television. It is powered via a USB connection, either by your TV or by the included power block. This device, I rate as “excellent” in giving you the ability to wirelessly mirror what you see on your Android phone onto a TV or projector.

Actiontec ScreenBeam Mini 2

The key to using this device is that your Android phone must have mirroring capability (Miracast), which most of the modern day Android phones possess. In other words, when you get this setup (which is very easy – plug and play) you will be able to see what is on your phone on your TV or projector. This allows you to use your phones data connection to view pics, play games, read the news and stream video, such as YouTube, Hulu, Pluto, etc… I do recommend that you make sure you have an unlimited data connection through your cell service before using this device, which most people do these days. The real feature with Screenbeam is that you do not need a wi-fi connection or router for this to work; instead, Screenbeam wirelessly communicates directly with your smartphone.

Why did I purchase Screenbeam? I have an RV, way out in no man’s land, where I have managed to pull in a high-end 3G data signal using a booster. I use Screenbeam connected to the TV in my RV to stream video from my smartphone. It has literally opened up a whole new world in watching TV during the evenings when I am camping. Anything that I can pull down on my smartphone I can watch on the big screen. Screenbeam, so far, for me, has worked flawlessly.

Cost? The Screenbeam Mini 2 will run you around $40. To me, this an inexpensive device that works very well and would serve you for all sorts of purposes; such as using your phone to project a report or video in a conference meeting scenario or for home entertainment (gaming and movies). The selling point to me was that I can do a direct wireless connection where I do not need a wireless router like you do with the Google Chromecast or Amazon’s Fire Stick; pLus, this thing is very portable.

Where can I get the Screenbeam Mini 2?  My recommendation is to purchase it through Amazon (see link below); that way, easy to return if you do not like it, plus you can see the reviews. I can tell you that the Screenbeam Mini 2 is a great device that I am glad (and excited) to have purchased.

Quick Tip: If You Use An Android Phone You Have A Google Account (i.e. Gmail)

When you purchase and set up an Android phone, you initially are prompted to establish a Google Account. Many home-based users who are just getting into the Android smartphone arena do not know that. By establishing a Google Account (with a username and password) you now have access to many of Google’s apps and services such as Gmail, Google Photos, Google Docs, etc… that can be accessed from any web-based device (i.e. computer and tablet). Anything that is Google related, you will be able to access with your username and password. There is a great benefit to this on the upside, but on the downside, you essentially have sold your soul to Google…

There are workarounds to this, but for most folks at home just want their phones to work and do not think about workarounds. Just want to point that out…

Quick Tip: How To Power “OFF” Your Android Smartphone Or Tablet

One of the first questions I am often asked about Android OS Smartphones and Tablets is: How do you shutdown or power “off” the device (smartphone or tablet)?

Many folks will often tap the power button thinking they are turning the device “off”, when in fact they are only putting the device in a standby mode only. To really power “off” the device you need to hold down the power button until you see an option to power the device down (varies slightly from device to device, but the process is very similar). Select the “power off” option and the device will shut completely down. To power the device back “on”, hold in on the power button until you see the screen light up (typically with the phone or tablet’s logo).

A good practice to follow is to turn the device completely “off” on occasions. I typically will power my smartphone (off) and back (on) at least once or twice a month. You will find this helps refresh the memory cache and the device will actually run a bit faster.

How Google’s rift with Huawei could change Android and smartphones forever | PCWorld

A bad month has just gotten a whole lot worse for Huawei. According to a Reuters report and confirmed by the two companies, Google is preparing to cut off the China-based smartphone maker’s Android license, preventing future Huawei phones (such as the upcoming Mate 30) from using the Play Store and Google’s popular apps and services.

google android

The bombshell comes just days after President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order barring U.S. companies from using telecommunications equipment made by firms that “pose a national security risk.” While the order didn’t single out Huawei, the Commerce Department simultaneously added Huawei to its Entity List, effectively banning the smartphone maker from buying parts and components from U.S. companies without explicit government approval. Together, the two moves make it extremely difficult for any U.S. company to do business with Huawei.

Google cuts off some business with Huawei, report says – CNET

If you own a Huawei phone, as I do, it appears we will no longer be getting any Android OS and security updates… Needless to say, “I am not a happy camper”…  Also, appears that any new phones distributed by Huawei will be cut off from the Google Play Store, as well.

Huawei is losing Android operating system updates, a source close to the matter told Reuters, and Huawei’s upcoming phones outside of China will no longer get access to apps and services like Gmail and Google Play. Google also will no longer offer technical support to Huawei, the source told Reuters.

Quick Tip: How To Find, Lock Or Erase A Stolen or Lost Android Device

There is nothing more distressful than losing your smartphone… If you own an Android device, such as a smartphone, tablet or Chromebook, you most likely performed the initial set up using a Google Account (i.e. Gmail account). As a result, you have a feature where you can remotely find, lock or erase the device in the event the phone is stolen or lost (Note: The phone must be turned “on” in order for this to work). You can even ring the phone and send information to the phone requesting that the phone be returned. You will need to go to a computer, log into your Google account, in order to make this work. Follow the steps below to put you on the road of recovery. You can go ahead and practice this…

  1. Open a browser, like Chrome Chrome. If you’re using someone else’s device, use private browsing mode.
  2. Open your Google Account.
  3. In the “Security” section, select Find a lost or stolen phone.
  4. Select the lost phone, tablet, or Chromebook.
  5. Follow the step-by-step suggestions to help find and secure the device.

ADDED TIP: Also, did you know, if you have a Google Account, and you are logged in, you can perform a Google Search, type in “Find My Phone” and Google (with a map) will find your phone within about 50 feet.

Quick Tip: How To Power “Off” and Power “On” Your Android Phone

How do I turn the darn thing off and on?  Typically your Android Smartphone and other Android devices (like your tablet) are made to remain “on” and will go to sleep after a prescribed amount of time; however, it is a good idea (every so often) to turn the phone “off”, then back “on”. This is good to refresh the memory, dump any cached files, etc… Couple other situations where you may need to turn the phone “off” is a situation where you do not want the phone to cause a disturbance (like in Church, at a funeral, at a wedding, a meeting, etc…) OR you may need to turn it “off” when the phone has locked up.

On most Android devices if you do the following, you can turn the device (phone or tablet) “off”:

Press and hold in on the power button. Typically an option will appear that will allow you to select power “off” the device.

Samsung Power Off Restart

On most Android devices if you do the following, you can turn the device (phone or tablet) “on”:

Press and hold in on the power button. Be patient, it may take a bit of time for the boot screen to appear to indicate the device is powered “on”. Also, give the device a minute or more to fully boot up.

Quick Tip: Securing Your Android Phone

If you have ever lost or misplaced your Android phone there are two waves of panic that hit. Wave number one is just the fact of knowing you lost a valuable piece of property. Wave number two hits you when you realize everything you do on that phone (photos, personal data, passwords, social media, text messages, etc…) could be in the hands of someone else. Smartphones are a treasure trove of personal data that ultimately could compromise your life if you do not take the proper measures to secure your phone.

Image result for Securing Your Android Phone

Today’s tip is simply this… Secure your phone and do it now…

To do this (and each phone is slightly different), go into the “Settings” and look for a selection that will fall under the premise of “Security and Privacy”. In those “Security and Privacy” settings (and each phone is different) look for the options to secure your phone (via a lock screen). On today’s phones, depending on the model, you can protect access to the phone through passwords, swipe patterns, pin numbers, fingerprints, and face recognition. What do I use on my phone? I use face recognition, a pin number, and fingerprints in combo. What is the safest? I am going to say fingerprint; however, I am now reading that the crooks have ways to break that (one of the reasons I use a combination of access controls).

Anyhow, please lock down your phone before you experience the two waves of panic…

Quick Tip: Disable/Uninstall Unneeded Android Apps

Typically, with few exceptions, when you purchase an Android smartphone (or tablet), there are apps on the phone that are pre-installed and cannot be uninstalled (or removed) if you do not need them. Since you cannot uninstall (or remove) these apps, I suggest that you disable them to prevent them from running in the background. To do this (each phone is slightly different), go into the main system settings of the phone and look for the app list or menu. In that menu locate the app you want to disable and look for the option to disable it.

For example, below is an image of the where I disabled the “Gallery” app on my phone. This will save me space on the phone and will save on background memory.

In The Market For A Smartphone? Here is my recommendation that will save you a lot of money…

In the market for a smartphone? Difficult decision to make and can be worse than shopping for a car. As smartphones continue to evolve, I am learning more and more; however, I am finding it is really not much different than shopping for a laptop or desktop computer. In reality, these smartphones are our computers in our pockets and have become an extension of our physical presence.

Like computers, there are specific hardware (and software) components to look for; such as the processor; the RAM (random access memory); the operating system (Android, iOS, etc); the display (LCD or Oled); the camera (single lens, dual lens, megapixels, etc…); and, the big one, the battery life. Typically, I shoot for a good mid-range phone and an example of that is the Motorola (Lenovo) Moto G Plus. Now, there is another “G” model that is out there (that I am looking at) and it is the Motorola (Lenovo) moto g⁵ˢ plus (which is a model that just came out); HOWEVER, for the sake of this blog article, I am focusing on the Moto G Plus to point out a good deal at Amazon.

What Amazon has done is cut a deal with Motorola (Lenovo), for Amazon Prime members, where on the notification screen you will see an Amazon ad here and there; and, from what the reviews are saying, this is not anything to get concerned about and is not intrusive. As a result of this deal, you can get a really nice mid-range phone for less money than the original cost and a whole lot less money than the top-end phones that are out there. If you are not an Amazon Prime Member, you can still buy this phone, straight-out with no ads, and still get a great phone at a very good pricing point.

To cut right to the chase, here is the Motorola G Plus that is at Amazon that I highly recommend and so do nearly 3000 other people. I have done quite a bit of research on this phone, watched the YouTube reviews, and am convinced the Motorola phone is going to be my next Smartphone. Yes, you can go with the Samsung or the Apple; but, guess what? Their newer models are fast approaching the $1000 mark. I can buy 4 or 5 of these Motorola’s at that price that will do what they do… If you notice below, the model I spec’d out is the 4GB RAM model with 64GB of storage (plus, can handle a 128GB microSD card). No midrange phone that I know of out there, for this price, can match this. Also, this is an unlocked smartphone and will work on all major carrier networks.

There are two groups of people: those who use their smartphones or tablets in the bathroom, and those lying about using smartphones and tablets in the bathroom….

Our smartphones (and tablets) are an extension of ourselves; and, as result, we take them to the bathroom. Here is a good read on “Stop taking your gadgets into the bathroom. Here’s why…“.

Car Smartphone Holder That I Can Attest To

My previous post about the app, DailyRoads Voyager (see here), I use the Mpow CD Slot Car Mount Universal Cell Phone Holder to mount my phone (to use as a dashcam). Fortunately, my CD slot in my head unit is close to the top of the dash. Even if you have no intention of using your phone for a dashcam, this phone holder is an excellent choice. In my case, I never use CD’s and this mount has proven to be a good mount.

Simple Usage Modes

Just push the Mpow mount holder into the CD slot, it will get stuck firmly. Then place the metal plate between your device and it can hold your smartphone safely. 360 Degree Swivel Innovative ballhead construction allows you to quickly adjust to optimal angle in 360 degrees. No Blind Side.

Three-sided Clip

Three-sided cradle keeps your sensitive electronic devices firmly in place while still allowing full function. Two cushioned side grips keep your electronic device safe and secure, while a detachable ledge creates a resting shelf for additional support. Remove your device easily and quickly with a push-button release.

Wide Compatibility

Up to 3.9in locking range allows large phones with thick otter box. Phone models included: iPhone 5s/6/6s/6s Plus, HTC One, Google Nexus 4/5 P, Nokia Lumia 920/1020, and more.

Get The Android Auto Experience On Your Smartphone

Two years ago Android Auto was launched and was available only in certain model cars. Soon, through the Google Play Store, you will be able to get Android Auto for your Smartphone (Android 5.0 and later) as an app. Android Auto provides a “driver friendly interface to access the key stuff you need on the road ― directions, music, communications ― without the distraction of things that aren’t essential while driving”.  You can read more about this HERE and when it will become available.

Want An Inexpensive Smartphone? Get the LG Stylo 2

I recently moved my cellphone service to Cricket Wireless; and, part of the deal I got was the LG Stylo 2 smartphone (unlocked) for a straight out $80 (with no contract). I was reluctant to make the change from my Nexus 5 to the Stylo 2, but let me tell you, the Stylo 2 rocks. I am in love with this phone… With the Cricket service (owned by AT&T); not only has my coverage improved (and expanded), the addition of the Stylo 2 was just the icing on the cake. The Stylo 2 is a phablet size, quad core, 16GB (storage), 2GB (ram), Android Marshmallow phone (with SD slot), and a removable 3000mAh battery. The Stylo 2 also comes with a removable stylus, which allows you to do some really neat things. I have thrown everything at this phone and it has handled it. If you go to Amazon (CLICK HERE) you can see that this phone, which is relatively new to the market, is accumulating excellent ratings. Why pay $500 to $800 when you can get a really nice phone for $80, if you look around (typically this phone is sold for around $179 to $199 unlocked).

Geek Squeaks (#2015-42) FEATURING — An Easy To Use Backup Program — and MORE GREAT STUFF

An Easy To Use Backup Program – Nearly every home based computer user that I have encountered do not backup their personal files. Most of what files people have stored on their computers they feel are files that are unimportant; until the moment comes that they lose those files. An example being, many people store family pictures on their computers. At the moment they may seem unimportant; however, when the computer fails (and it will), all of the sudden you realize that you lost precious memories. If you fall into this category, which most likely you do, please take the time to purchase an external hard drive (click here) and establish a backup plan. Finding an external hard drive and connecting it is the easy part. Finding a software solution is another matter. To help you along, a software solution that I use is called

To help you along, a software solution that I use is called Bvckup 2. If you visit the site you will see that it is software that you have to buy; however, to get around that option, if you scroll down to the bottom of the page where the download button is located, you will see “Looking for the last beta?”.  If you click on that link you can download the last beta version of Bvckup, which is FREE. By trying out the beta, you may be encouraged to purchase the software; however, I have found the beta’s of BVCkup 2 to work perfectly fine for our purposes. Bvckup 2 is easy to use (and learn) and it does not compress, encrypt or FTP files. It’s not a two-way sync nor is it a full system backup software. It simply makes a copy of your personal files from your computer to a designated location on the external hard drive; AND, the best part (by default), Bvckup will automatically perform these backups for you in real-time.

Turn Your Android Smartphone Into A Digital Bubble Level – Our smartphones have many other purposes other than making calls and texting. For example, did you know you can turn your smartphone into a bubble level that comes in handy when you need to make sure a picture is hung straight on the wall, or a length of lumber is level, etc… If you search the Google Play store you will many bubble level apps available. The one that I settled for is an app developed by a company who actually makes levels, called Rigid. The app that they have developed is called Rigid Digital Bubble Level. This app features a calibration mode that will allow you to use this app in three views: Bubble View (the standard bubble level you’re used to); Horizon View (a horizon line that twists as you rotate. Enable the camera feature in this view to level things from afar.); and, Flat View (placing the phone on a surface activates this view where an optional beep can indicate how level the surface is without needing to look at the screen.)…

A Gizmodo Field Guide To 9 Google Now Voice Commands to Take Control of Your Smartphone – I am sure, if you own a Google based Android phone, you have used the “ok Google” feature where you speak to your phone by saying “ok google” and then tell (speak to) the Google Now Assistant to perform searches, etc… I am still trying to get used to this, but when I do use it I am really amazed of the accuracy and the results. Along with performing searches there are other commands you can give. Gizmodo has put together a nice field guide to “9 Google Now Voice Commands To Take Control Of Your Smartphone” that you need to learn. Commands such as turning your wi-fi on/off; the flashlight on/off; read text messages; etc…

What caught my eye and made me look more than twice was the unbelievable super low pricing. I will definitely be keeping an eye on this smartphone brand that just may change the whole landscape of things when it comes to smartphones.

Geek Squeaks (#2015-21) FEATURING — Windows 10 Enhancement Update Coming In November — and MORE GREAT STUFF

Windows 10 Enhancement Update Coming In November – Microsoft is referring to this update as an enhancement update and it will be called Threshold 2. Best read on this is at BGR where they are reporting “The most important Windows 10 update yet is coming in November – here’s what we know so far.“… Expected changes mentioned is support for Microsoft Edge browser extensions, a desktop messaging app that will apparently work across various lines of messaging services and more “under-the-hood” improvements that will benefit Universal apps.

Windows 10 Threshold 2 Update

Here Are Steps To Take To Keep Your Android Smartphone Locked Down – Have you ever misplaced your smartphone or had it stolen? I have and the feeling that I experienced was not a good feeling (even though I had the phone locked down and protected). Our phones are an extension of ourselves and we don’t realize that until it is gone. The information you carry on that phone is all about you; your online account information, your personal text and email messages, pictures, documents, etc…  Not good, if this information falls into the wrong hands. To take a step in the right direction to protect you and your phone, please read How to Keep Your Android as Secure as Possible at Drippler…

Microsoft Can Track Your Keystrokes (in Windows 10) – Microsoft can track your keystrokes, your speech, and more. Here are the settings to turn it all off — CLICK HERE … Microsoft openly put into the Windows 10 Technical Preview a keylogger. At that time, the company admitted that “we may collect voice information” and “typed characters.” Apparently they are still collecting information in the released version of Windows 10.

Also, on the same site as the Talking Alarm Clock you will find the Talking Desktop Clock that will announce the time on the hour, ½ hour, or ¼ hour, or at any interval you choose. There are optional clock styles and chimes to choose from.

Prices Slashed On Motorola Nexus 6 Smartphone – The Nexus brand is the brand that is supported by Google. I noticed that the pricing on the 32 GB model and the 64 bit model (at Amazon) have been sliced dramatically. If you are looking for an unlocked Android smartphone, here is your chance to get hold of one…  I don’t know how long this will last, but this a great deal.

ASUS has become a well known product name for desktop computers; BUT, did you know that they make an Android Smartphone that is probably one of the best mid-range inexpensive phones out there. It is called the ASUS ZenFone

ASUS ZenFone 2

Based on the excellent customer reviews at Amazon, this phone is a hit. I am sure the price point on this phone is a main factor; especially, when you start comparing this phone with some of the other more expensive phones (such as the Samsung S6 or Apple’s iPhones). This phone comes unlocked and is compatible with the GSM Networks including AT&T, T-Mobile and cellular network providers utilizing GSM network such as: Straight Talk, Walmart Family Mobile, MetroPCS, Simple Mobile, Brightspot, Net10, h20 Wireless, and Cricket Wireless. I encourage you take a look at the reviews and I think you will agree this phone is a phone to consider. From what I have read the processing power is right up there, but the camera is not up to what maybe the Samsung S6 is…

The ASUS ZenPhone is definitely a phone to consider purchasing straight out to reduce your monthly cell bill where most people are paying for their phone a bit at a time each month.

Your Smartphone May Be Tracking You And Everywhere You Go (with Timestamps)

Friend of mine pointed me to this NBC News Video that explains in approximately 3 minutes how our smartphones (whether it be an Apple iPhone or Google Android Phone) are configured, by default, to track everywhere you go and keep a history of your movements. If you are not familiar with the settings on your phone that turn “on” this services, I highly recommend you take a moment, watch the video, and learn how to turn “off” these service.

How scary is this?  I have an Android Smartphone and when I purchased the phone, I had turned the Google Location Services to “off”.  I knew full well this was a tracking component; but, what I didn’t know was how powerful it was, until now.

For experimental purposes (and for benefit of this article), I turned the services back “on” and drove my wife to work. When I returned home I went to my desktop computer and went to Google’s Location History web site (you must have a google account in order for this to work). Low and behold my every movement from leaving my house, taking my wife to work, and returning home was tracked.

Also, to visually demontrate this, below is a screenshot (from my smartphone) where this service tracked my movements using Google Maps. I deliberately reduced the screenshot size so as not to reveal my location. If you notice to the left side of the map there is a calendar. If you have the service turned “on”, you can click on any date to determine where you have been (or your cheating lover), with associated timestamps.  You can also export the data to an XML file and most importantly an option to delete the data and the history… Again, watch the video and know how to turn these settings “on” and “off”.

How To Activate The FM Radio Chip In Your Smartphone

I bet you did not know that your smartphone has a FM radio chip built into the phone that has the ability to receive FM radio signal broadcasts, just like any FM radio. Since this technology works off of the radio waves, no internet data connection is required.

So, how do you activate the chip in order to receive FM radio broadcasts? This “how to” article is a little bit more involved than what the title may lead you to believe; but, to activate the chip requires each of us to TAKE ACTION and contact our wireless carriers to request that the FM radio chip technology be activated. From what I have read, carriers in other countries activate the chips (by default).

Free Radio On My Phone

To learn more about the FM Radio chip, please visit Free Radio On My Phone

Contact your wireless carrier today to let them know — as a matter of public safety and consumer fairness for data plans — you want your phone’s FM chip activated for constant access to free FM radio!

How To Determine If Your Website Is Mobile-Friendly

Let’s face it, our mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) have become an attachment to our self. As a result, when we use the web browser on these devices we want the websites to load and fit the screen size without having to make adjustments. Web sites that are able to automatically make these adjustments are known as mobile-friendly sites. I know myself, if I visit a site on my smartphone and it is difficult to read and navigate, I typically will not revisit the site.

How important is this? If your site is not mobile-friendly (not formatted to fit the screen) there is a possibility your Google PageRank will be affected (read this). Of course site content is a major factor in maintaining a high PageRank; however, Google is now also factoring mobile friendliness into this mix, as well. To learn more about Google PageRanking  CLICK HERE

How To Determine If Your Site Is Mobile-Friendly

If you want to determine if your site (or any site for that matter) is mobile-friendly, I encourage you to take the Mobile-Friendly Test at the Google Developers web site.

This test will analyze a URL and report if the page has a mobile-friendly design.

Learn more about the mobile-friendly criteria and how it may affect Google’s search results by reading our blog post.

A Must Have Android App

Probably one of the most underused functions on computers, by the everyday computer user, is the copy and paste function. I am sure this is probably true when it comes to using our smartphones. As a matter of fact, I randomly asked some of the my friends if they knew how to copy and paste text on their Android phones??? As usual when I ask these geeky type of questions they sort of look at me with that deer in the headlight look and wonder what planet I am from. Every single person I asked this question did not know that was even possible on their phones.

Copying and pasting text from one app to another on our phones is a function you need to learn and if you want to get a good start on this I suggest that you take a look at Easy Copy.

Easy Copy - 1-Tap Copy Paste - screenshot

Easy Copy is an Android app that is better than the standard built-in copy paste function in that it has the following features that makes using the copy paste function a more powerful function. After you tap on copy, a pop-up menu will be displayed and allows to:

  • locate in Google Maps
  • call the number
  • translate with Google Translate
  • create an event
  • modify the text you copied (very useful in Hangouts when you only want to copy part of a message!)
  • send by text
  • share (when not already developed in the given application)

I found that when the menu appears to perform these function, you can drag the order of the menu around to fit your personal needs. For example, on top of my menu list is the “share” function, due I use that function the most.

This app appears to be relatively new app in the Google Play store, so expect some bugaboos; however, my geek senses is telling me that this app will improve and become very, very popular…

A Bluetooth Speaker For Under $30 That Has Me Sold

To compliment my Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 Tablet, I went on the hunt for a bluetooth speaker. Never having owned a bluetooth speaker, I soon found that there are so many different models and types of these speakers to the point that you can easily get lost in the hunt.

What I was looking for was something that was reasonable in size, sounds good, and is under $50.  If you are not familiar with these little speakers, they are primarily used to wirelessly connect (via bluetooth technology) your smartphone or tablet so that you can listen to music, podcasts, videos, etc… It actually adds a whole other dimension to your handheld devices.

After researching bluetooth speakers at various sites on the internet, I ended up at Amazon where I could make cost and feature comparisons and get a good feel of where a particular speaker stood based on the customer reviews (which is a strong point at Amazon).

What I found was a bluetooth speaker called the DKnight Magicbox (for under $30), that in my opinion, deserves a 5 star rating. As a matter of fact if you look at the customer reviews on this speaker you will find that the DKnight Magicbox has had over 5500 customer reviews and is carrying a near 5 star rating.

DKnight Magicbox

Straight out of the box I was able to seamlessly connect my tablet to the speaker. The first time I heard the sound, coming from such a small footprint, I was totally amazed. Yes, you can spend a lot of money for a bluetooth speaker, but I am telling you don’t do it.  Give the DKnight Magicbox a try before you do.

Here is what I liked about this speaker:

  • It just plain looks nice (with a rubber top and rubber bottom)…
  • There is an “on and off” switch on the side of the unit and controls on the top of the unit (for volume, to move forward/backward in your music que, to pause and to answer your phone)…
  • When charging, a red led light is displayed.  When the speaker is fully charged the light will go out.
  • There is a micro SD card slot on the unit.  Load your MP3’s on the SD card and speaker will play them…
  • It has two highly powerful 40mml total 6W acoustic drivers that produces a wide spectrum of audio…
  • It is less than $30…

No Crap With This App (Android Public Toilet Finder)

I have to love Android and the constant flow of apps that are constantly under development. Flush – The Android Public Toilet Finder is one of the newer apps to hit the Google Play Store that is a real attention grabber.

 Flush - Public Toilet Finder

Flush is a database, with a pretty nice interface (with animations) that will help you find the local public john using the Google Map technology. My first question to this is what happens when I am in need and there is no internet access. No problem with Flush; it works offline, as well.

Features:

. Find public restrooms/toilets quickly and easily

. Locate toilets anywhere around the world, wherever you are

. A database of over 100,000 toilets available, constantly being increased

. A beautiful material design inspired interface

. A quick directions button, to get you directions to a toilet as quickly as possible

. Find whether a toilet has a fee, requires a key or provides disabled/accessibility access

. Works perfectly offline, no internet connection required to find a toilet

The Benefit of Turning Off GPS On Your Android Phone (KitKat Version) And Using WiFi To Determine Your Location

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] The Benefit of Turning Off GPS On Your Android Phone (KitKat Version) And Using WiFi To Determine Your Location – When the GPS function is activated on your phone it is constantly performing a satellite handshake to pinpoint your location. Personally, I do not see a need for GPS unless you are going a trip and need to use the phone for navigation purposes; PLUS, GPS turned “on” drains the battery.

The 2nd best option to GPS, that is more battery friendly, is to use Wi-Fi and the Mobile Networks to determine your location. To do this on your Android Phone (KitKat version), Go to Settings > Location Mode AND select Battery Saving (Use wi-fi and mobile networks to determine location).

A Lightweight Program Whose Purpose Is To Help You Quickly Find Files

I recently posted a squeak on Five Efficient Alternatives To Windows Search and a reader wrote in to tell me about another alternative called SwiftSearch.

I took SwiftSearch for a spin and liked the idea that it is a down and dirTy open source application that reads the NTFS file table to locate files. End result is an search application that can find files at insane speeds. To use this application you must have Admin rights and a NTFS formatted drive.

image

Typically searches yield full results in ~10 seconds or less, a significant speedup for many users. As a bonus, this program also supports path-based search (for example, you can search for “*Program*\ Windows*”), regular expressions (just start the search name with ‘>’ character), and full directory sizes. Its goal is to be simple, swift, and intuitive to use.

A FREE Android Memory Booster App

If you are looking for an Android App that is similar to the PC version of CCleaner, then take a look at Clean Master… I currently run this on all of my Android devices to clear out the cache and junk files; AND, free up RAM and storage space…

image

[Junk Files] – Clean Cache and Residual Files
On Android devices, cache and residual files can build up and occupy gigabytes of your phone’s space. Cleaning junk files can help free up memory on your device and SD card.

[Privacy] – Delete History
Privacy is important and many of your apps silently record your personal data, such as your web browser data, Google search history, and more. Clean Master can erase this information and keep your personal data secure.

[Memory Boost] – Advanced Task Manager
Tasks running in the background not only occupy system RAM, but also waste your battery life. Task Killer can stop other apps that are running in the background and free up more RAM to speed up your Android device. This includes a shortcut called “1 Tap Boost”, easily accessible from your home screen.

[App Manager] – Uninstaller, Backup, Move to SD
An uninstaller that is an improvement over the default Android version, which is also able to create backup .apk files. Some rooted users will also be able to move apps to their SD card as well as uninstall pre-installed and system apps.

[Widget] – Memory Booster Widget
A handy shortcut that allows you to instantly boost your pone’s memory from a phone widget. To enable the widget, just touch the homescreen with a long hold until a window appears, then scroll down and select the Clean Master Widget.

Your laptop overheats and turns itself off how do you overcome this problem?

@ Wiki Answers

During a training session I was attending the instructor’s notebook, after approximately 2 hours of use, started to suddenly shut itself down and when the instructor resumed Windows the mouse became jumpy and the computer’s performance noticeably dropped. Long story short; the notebook was positioned in such a way that it could not cool itself down and was becoming overheated. This led me to find this article at Wiki Answers…

Cryptolocker: How to avoid getting infected
and what to do if you are

@ ComputerWorld

I know I posted information yesterday about Cryptolocker, but this is extremely important. If you become victim of Cryptolocker, you are at high odds of losing your personal files. I have never seen anything like this and I feel, the more I let people know, the better. If you see the below graphic show up on your PC displaying that your personal files are encrypted, you have been nailed!

image

Cryptolocker comes in the door through social engineering. Usually the virus payload hides in an attachment to a phishing message, one purporting to be from a business copier like Xerox that is delivering a PDF of a scanned image, from a major delivery service like UPS orFedEx offering tracking information or from a bank letter confirming a wire or money transfer… READ MORE

Today’s Geek Squeaks – October 18, 2013

A summary of Today’s Geek Squeaks:

Squeak #1 –(Add Multi-Tab Functionality To Windows Explorer): I am big on using the built in file manager in Windows; however, it is lacking when compared to some of the third party file managers that are available. Today, I found a really cool application (or extension) called Clover that adds multi-tab functionality to Windows Explorer (for Windows 7 and XP) and File Explorer (for Windows 8). The really cool part about Clover is that it looks like the Chrome browser (SEE BELOW);

Squeak #2 – (More News On The Nexus 5): Either Google made a boo boo and posted the Nexus 5 (at $349) on the Nexus site by mistake or they are using a marketing tactic to promote the Nexus 5; either way, it showed up on the site one minute, then disappeared the next (SEE BELOW);

Squeak #3 – (An App For To Check Your Heart Rate): Carol over at Carol’s Vault has a really neat app posted that literally could be a lifesaver (SEE BELOW); and,

Squeak #4 – (A Small Speaker That Puts Out A Surprising Amount of Sound): The iHome iHM60GY 3.5mm Aux Portable Speaker is one awesome speaker for its’ size. If you don’t believe me check out the customer reviews and (SEE MORE BELOW)…

Thanks to a leaked service manual for the upcoming LG Nexus 5 that arrived over the weekend, there really is very little we don’t know about the phone outside of a release date and price.
