Windows Repair Toolbox – Best FREE Portable Software To Help Diagnose And Solve Windows Computer Problems

There are many good (FREE) software utilities out there to help fix specific problems with your Windows computer; however, you need to know where to find them.

The Windows Repair Toolbox solves that problem by giving you a dashboard menu of choices to perform malware removal, system cleaning and repair, and disk defragmentation. These tools can be run successively in an unattended mode; and, when done, will send you an email (with log results) to let you know that the automatic repair is complete. You can even add your own software utilities to the Windows Repair Toolbox; however, from what I see that is included, they are some of the best out there.

I do have to advise you, that when you use tools to diagnose Windows problems, you are doing so at your own risk; however, when your back is against the wall and you have run out of solutions, Windows Repair Toolbox may be that shot in the dark you were looking for. Windows Repair Toolbox is available as a portable app, which makes it nice for those who run around helping others with their computer problems.

Features:

  • Download and run “on-the-fly” the best free portable software when it comes to diagnose and solve several kinds of Windows problems. The tools are categorized by their function, and the program will automatically download the correct version for the Windows edition in which you’re working. When you finish, simply uninstall the tool, and all downloaded software is also removed. Or you can choose the portable version of Windows Repair Toolbox, and just run it from a pen drive.
  • Ability to select several tools to run successively in unattended mode, in order to perform malware removal, system cleaning and repair, and disk defragmentation. A email letting you know that the automatic repair is complete, and containing the logs, can be sent to you.
  • Displays relevant information about the computer to be repaired: CPU temperature, name and % time; amount of RAM installed on the system and % of use; Disk model, capacity, rotation, SATA version, basic health check; amount of free space left in the system partition; Windows edition and install date; System boot time; boot environment.
  • Allows you to add your own favorite tools to the program;
  • Allows you change the program icon and title bar text;
  • Allows you to perform quality assurance tests after the repair is complete;
  • Allows you to save notes about the repair process;
  • Provides 1-click access to some useful Windows tools;

Use WizTree To Find The Files And Folders Using The Most Space On Your Hard Drive

Is your computer running slower due to low disk space? If so, run the portable version of WizTree to determine where the space hogs are located. Just be careful in what you end up deleting.

I am quite impressed with WizTree in the fact that it includes a visual treemap that allows you to spot large files and large collections of smaller files at a glance.

  • Finds the files and folders using the most space on your hard drive
  • VERY Fast! WizTree reads the master file table (MFT) directly from NTFS formatted hard drives (similar to the way Everything Search Engine works)
  • Visual Treemap allows you to spot large files and large collections of smaller files at a glance
  • Finds the largest files on your hard drive. Every single file on your hard drive can be sorted in order of size.
  • File Name Search – quickly locate files by name or wildcard match
  • Sort the contents of your entire hard drive by folder size and optionally delete files and folders
  • Scan ALL hard drive file system types (NTFS, FAT, FAT32, network, etc) and/or individual folders

FREE Drive Wiping Tool To Erase All Data With No Method Of Recovery

Getting rid of an old computer? Before handing that old computer over to someone else, you may want to consider using “MiniTool Drive Wipe Free” to remove all data from the computer. Deleting your personal files is not enough. There are third party software utilities, readily available on the internet, that will let anyone recover deleted files. By using “MiniTool Drive Wipe Free” to wipe the drive, there is no method of recovery.

Wiping is the process of continuously writing some specific data to a hard disk or partition so as to overwrite original data stored on the disk or partition. Once wiping is completed, original data can not be recovered by any data recovery method.

To effectively carry out this operation I would remove the drive from the old computer and put it in a drive docking station such as the Sabrent USB 3.0 to SATA External Hard Drive Lay-Flat Docking Station. This docking station is inexpensive and will work with 2.5 or 3.5in HDD or SSD drives. Once the drive is in the docking station, connect it to a workable Windows computer and use the “MiniTool Drive Wipe Free” software to “wipe the disk” that is in the external docking station. After performing this operation, you can safely reinstall the hard drive back into the old computer and do with it what you want (i.e. donate it, recycle it, give to a friend, sell, etc…)

TurnedOnTimesView is a simple tool that detects the time ranges that your computer was turned on…

TurnedOnTimesView is another tool from NirSoft that will provide you with the Startup Time, Shutdown Time, Duration, Shutdown Reason, Shutdown Type, Shutdown Process, and Shutdown Code of your computer. TurnedOnTimesView extracts this information from the event log on your computer. This information is useful in troubleshooting computer problems and can also be used to determine when and how long the kids have been on the computer after you have started it up.

This utility, a portable app, works on any version of Windows, starting from Windows 2000 and up to Windows 10 (32-bit and 64-bit systems).

Crystal Security – A cloud-based system that detects and removes malicious programs (malware)…

Crystal Security, a cloud-based system that detects and removes malicious programs (malware), is new to me. I am currently testing the portable version and so far the interface part looks great (user friendly). The detection engine, from I am can tell, is based on data gathered from millions of participating users systems around the world to help defend against the very latest viruses and malware attacks.

Due to not being familiar with Crystal Security, at this point, I will continue to test and use it solely as a troubleshooting application to inform when the possibility of malware exists. If you are familiar with Crystal Security, I would like to hear your experience with this. I do like the idea that there is a portable (no install) option.

I do recommend that you know what you are doing when using applications, such as this; so as not to cause accidental havoc to your PC.

SysGauge – A FREE System And Performance Monitoring Utility

SysGauge, a system and performance monitoring utility, available as a portable app, is a nice utility that you may want to consider for the tech toolbox. Appears to support all versions of Windows, XP to Present… Windows Server versions also supported.

One notable feature of SysGauge that I was impressed with is the system analysis feature. Just press the ‘Analyze’ button located on the main toolbar and SysGauge will perform a quick system status analysis of your PC that will check the CPU usage, memory usage, the operating system status, the disk space usage for all disks and produce the results in a nice dialog summary.

In summary:

SysGauge is a system and performance monitoring utility allowing one to monitor the CPU usage, memory usage, network transfer rate, operating system performance, the status and resource usage of running processes, file system performance, USB performance, disk space usage, disk read activity, disk write activity, disk read transfer rate, disk write transfer rate, disk read IOPS and disk write IOPS for individual logical disks or all physical disks installed in the computer.

DesktopSnowOK isn’t the most useful program around, but you can make it snow in August…

DesktopSnowOK is a program that is very small in size, requires no install, and is configurable in the sense that you can control the quantity of the snow falling and the speed. You can even make it snow baseballs, soccer balls, tennis balls and a multitude of other flake options. Really not the most useful program around; but, I do have to admit that when the snow flakes are falling it does have a calming effect. So, in conclusion; if you are having a stressful day, let it snow…

Another Windows Software Option To Protect Your Eyes At Night and Get Better Sleep

Even though there is a control option in Windows 10 that will adjust the light being emitted from your computer screen at night (see article here) to ease your eyes and not disrupt your sleep; there are other options out there to do the same (and better).  One such option, developed by a 22-year-old developer, is called “Light Bulb”.

Light Bulb is an open source software application (which is FREE) that eliminates eye strain when working during late hours by smoothly reducing the display color temperature on your monitor. You can adjust Light Bulb anyway you want to set your own profile; plus, there is a geolocation feature built in that will automatically select your location for the sunrise and sunset times.

When it gets late, due to bright blue light emitting from the screen, looking at your PC monitor can become very straining on the eyes. This program sits in the background and continuously changes the gamma using temperature profiles, making the colors appear warmer at night. You can customize it in any way you like, including changing the day-time and night-time color temperatures, transition duration, sunrise and sunset times, temperature smoothing and a lot more.

Kaspersky System Checker – A Portable Free Tool To Scan Your PC For A Range Of Problems

If you are experiencing issues with your PC, Kapersky System Checker may help you resolve the issue.  It is not designed to fix anything; but, is designed to give you a lead on what the problem could be… I look at this as another tool in the tech toolbox that may help you troubleshoot a range of problems such as:  malware, missing updates, poorly configured Windows or application settings, a shortage of hard drive space, and more.  Simply download and run. No install is necessary.

Here’s “How To” Auto Hide Those Desktop Icons

Over the years, I have assisted people with their computers and have found that their Windows desktop becomes a haven for icons. Some folks are organized about it; but, most folks are not. Myself, I try to keep my desktop organized and the icons to a minimum. In addition, I use a portable app called “AutoHideDesktopIcons” to auto hide the icons after a set period of time. To simply reinstate the icons (make them appear again), I simply left mouse click the desktop.

AutoHideDesktopIcons also has an option to the hide the taskbar and an option to autostart with Windows (which I recommend in order to take full advantage of this app). AutoHideDesktop Icons is very small in size (<60K) and is fully compatible with all versions of Windows.

Has anyone tried the Nox App Player (Android Emulator for Windows / Mac)?

I discovered Nox App Player on FreewareFiles and it has me interested; however, if anyone out there has installed this, I would be interested in knowing what their experience was. The Nox App Player is a 277MB install and serves as an Android Emulator. What that means is, if you install Nox App Player you can install and run Android apps on your Windows based computer through the emulator.

Although there are several programs providing an Android environment on PC, it is difficult to get a complete Android experience using the traditional emulators. However, Nox App Player provides an interface that looks like an actual Android device in all ways. The intuitive emulator is based on Android 4.4.2 and compatible with both AMD and x86 systems.

Quick Access Popup – Speed Up Your Work With This Multi-Purpose Launcher and Folder Switcher!

From day one I have enjoyed working with various program launchers in creating menus to launch my favorite and/or most used programs. With that being said, Quick Access Launcher is right down my alley. I first saw this on Major Geeks and thought I would give it a try and share this find with you. Where this little program will come in handy for me is that I can install this on my flash drive as a portable app and will enable me to quickly launch the apps and web links I have on the drive.  If you like program launchers, I encourage you to take a look at this one (see video below for an overview).

LeoCAD – CAD Application For Creating Virtual LEGO Models

First time I saw this at FreewareFiles.  It is called LeoCad – CAD Application For Creating Virtual LEGO Models… If you like legos and computers, you will like this FREE program to start building complex lego models.

If you want a relatively simple Computer Aided Drawing (CAD) program you can use to design toys, then consider LeoCAD. The software currently includes more than 6000 different pieces that you can use to create various virtual LEGO models and a camera position function to view the models at different angles and directions.

Dsynchronize – Sync And Backup Your Data With This Free Program

I currently use Dsynchronize at work and at home to back up (and sync) my files. To learn how to use Dsynchronize, I suggest you set up a small test environment to practice using the program. It is very easy to use, once you get the hang of it. The thing that fascinates me with the program is that it is very fast. I have been using Dsynchronize for several years and it has never let me down.

Dsynchronize is FREE and is a standalone program (portable app) that requires no installation…

BPing – A tiny console-based ping tool with a sound effect…

First saw this on the DownloadCrew…  A nice ping tool for the tech toolbox (portable app) where you can detect by sound (like a heartbeat) when things are slowing down.

BPing is a tiny console-based ping tool with an unusual extra: sound. Sounds odd, but double-click the program and you’ll understand immediately.

By default the program immediately pings Google.com and plays a sound (from Space Invaders!) every time a reply arrives.

FREE Protection Against 99% Of Ransomware (including new strains such as Petya/NotPetya)

Wow, these ransomware events (or attacks) are causing havoc worldwide. The most recent attack is Petya (see below) where it will encrypt the files on your computer and hold your computer for ransom. Very important that you keep your computers patched with current Windows updates and security software updates.

Ransomware is alarmingly quick – Ransomware takes between five and 20 minutes to encrypt every relevant file on the average hard drive (depending on the speed of the machine and the number of files). That means that even the slowest, single-threaded ransomware can encrypt several potentially important files in seconds. Since ransomware works quickly, detection and response time is of the utmost importance, which may be problematic for certain behavioral-detection solutions.

I am seeing many of the leading security software companies coming out with various products to protect against ransomware. Big money in this… If you want something FREE that will add a level of protection to your computer, give Cybereason RansomFree a look. In a nutshell, this software uses a unique behavioral approach in detecting and blocking ransomware at the entry points where ransomware typically initiates the encryption process. When the program detects ransomware activity, it suspends the activity and displays a pop-up message warning you about an imminent attack. You will then have the option to easily stop the attack by making just one mouse click.

WeatherDan – FREE Program To Quickly Retrieve Current Weather Conditions and Radar

I love weather apps and WeatherDan is a new one on my plate. What I like about WeatherDan is that it sits in your system tray (bottom right corner where the time is) where you can click on the lightning bolt icon to get the current weather. You get your weather results by entering your zip code.  Right mouse click on the icon and you can get the radar (which can be set for a view up to 192 miles).  Once you have the current weather and/or radar on the screen, simply left mouse click on them and they will disappear. It appears the source for the weather is harvested from Weather.com due to the link option on the menu that will take you to the Weather.com web site (to get the complete weather).

Geek Squeak #17-017: Here is a program for Microsoft Windows devices that displays the resource use of the computer on the Windows taskbar….

Just found a pretty neat Windows resource meter, called XMeters, over at ghacks.net. What makes this resource meter so different is that the hardware readings are displayed on the Windows taskbar, which keeps it in sight at all times and is not out of view when opening programs.

Image result for xmeters

XMeters is a handy system monitor for the Windows taskbar that provides you with important real-time hardware readings. It offers customization options to a degree, but could use a couple more (opening another program instead of Task Manager for instance, or colors to distinguish heavy resource use better)….

MiniTool Partition Wizard Free 10.2.1 – An Editor’s Choice At DownloadCrew

This FREE partition tool gives you more flexibility (and more options) in comparison to the partition tool that is baked into Windows. For example, an option jumping out at me, that is not a windows option, is that there is a tool for wiping a partition securely, allowing you to delete the data from it (to the point that the data cannot be recovered by any data recovery solution). Other numerous options are reflected in the screenshot below…

Top 10 Best Sellers – Antivirus and Security Software

Antivirus software, now often referred to as security (suite) software, due to the innumerable threats, come in a variety of different brands. To get an idea, check out the top ten sellers at Amazon (see source links below).

I personally use a FREE antivirus program called Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition; however, you may feel more comfortable using one of the paid commercial versions such as reflected below.

Antivirus software was originally developed to detect and remove computer viruses, hence the name. However, with the proliferation of other kinds of malware, antivirus software started to provide protection from other computer threats. In particular, modern antivirus software can protect from: malicious browser helper objects (BHOs), browser hijackers, ransomware, keyloggers, backdoors, rootkits, trojan horses, worms, malicious LSPs, dialers, fraudtools, adware and spyware.[2] Some products also include protection from other computer threats, such as infected and malicious URLs, spam, scam and phishing attacks, online identity (privacy), online banking attacks, social engineering techniques, advanced persistent threat (APT) and botnet DDoS attacks. A Quick Grab and Save Clipboard Utility

Found this on BetaNews that looks interesting…  It is called Pastextra.  It is a tiny Explorer extension which enables pasting clipboard text or images directly to a file, no extra steps required. This is useful if you are into saving images or text that you need to preview later.

The program has no installer, but it’s easy to set up manually. Extract the archive to a safe folder, run Pastextra as an administrator and it registers itself on Explorer’s right-click menu.

Getting clipboard text or images into a file normally requires some help from an application. You might launch Notepad, paste in some text, click File > Save As, browse to the folder you need and…

S10 Password Vault – A Hidden Gem Of A Password Manager

The majority of home based computer users use the same passwords (or easy to remember passwords) for nearly every account that they are subscribed to. Hacker’s (or criminals) know this and take advantage of these facts. If your password is easy to remember, then it is easy to hack.

To make your accounts secure, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you use a password manager to manage your accounts and the passwords associated with them. The “go to” password manager that I use (on all my computers and devices); and, have used since its’ inception is the “S10 Password Vault”. It has never let me down… The main feature I like about this software is that I have total control over my password information at the local level.

S10 Password Vault

There are so many features to the S10 Password Vault that I encourage you to visit the developer’s site by clicking the source link below.S10 Password Vault is available for Windows as a standard installer and as a portable version that allows you to run directly from a USB drive (which then also contains your data file). There is also an “S10 Vault” mobile companion app for iPhone/iPad (in the App Store) and for Android devices (in the Google Play Store and Amazon App Store).

A FREE Synchronization Program That I Am Messing Around With

I have found that using synchronization software is a very easy way for the home based computer user to backup data vs. the full blown backup type software (which can hard to understand for the home computer user). I am currently messing around with the FREE synchronization program called SyncFolders; that, so far in my testing, could end up being my default (go to) backup software for my computers here at home. If you are interested in giving SyncFolders a try, the source link is reflected below. SyncFolders is also available as a portable app.

SyncFolders main window...

Features of SyncFolders

  • Supports two-way synchronization of files and folders.
  • Can easily be used as backup tool.
  • Shows a preview before the actual synchronization takes place. You can override actions if desired.
  • Detects conflicts or file collisions when a file has changed in both locations since the last sync operation. Therefore, SyncFolders tracks file modifications and deletions in a local database.
  • Propagates deletions and detects file renames.
  • File comparison by date and size or by content.
  • Default actions can be defined in case of synchronization conflicts.
  • Integrates with Windows’ Task Scheduler to support scheduled synchronizations.
  • Supports file and folder filters.
  • Can handle long file names and files of any size.
  • Synchronization from or to UNC paths is supported.
  • Supports multiple synchronization rules in a single rules file.
  • Deleted or overwritten files can be moved to the recycle bin or to a time-stamped history folder.
  • History files can be deleted after a user-defined period.
  • Unlimited number of files.
  • Synchronization from command line.
  • Can ignore one-hour timestamp differences caused by DST switch for synchronization to FAT file systems.
  • Easy-to-use.
  • Unrestricted freeware.
  • No spyware, adware or malware.
  • Portable, although .NET Framework is required.

Hyper Crypt | Portable Encryption Software

Looking for a method to protect sensitive files and folders?  If so, Hyper Crypt may be of interest to you (see source link below). Hyper Crypt consists of a standalone (portable) executable file, a pdf manual and an updater that can be run on any Windows computer (Vista and higher)…

hyper-crypt

One thing I noticed that when you encrypt a folder, the files in the folder will appear as they normally would and no copy of the original is left behind. If you attempt to open any of the files, they will not open, due to the encyption. Don’t know if that is good or not, but works for me…

By default if you encrypt a single file, a copy of the original file is left behind; however, there is an option to change that.

Hyper Crypt uses the military-grade AES-256 algorithm for file and folder encryption, along with automatic integrity validation.

With Hyper Crypt, you can easily encrypt any kind of file, from documents, to pictures and videos.

NEW – Software Downloads Page (with hundreds of titles — updated daily)

Just did a revamping of the software Downloads Page…  The page consists of feeds from numerous reputable software and app sites that primarily specializes in FREE software. I am currently using this as my “go to” source to review software listings and to see what is new and/or has been updated. The list is very, very long…  If you hover your mouse pointer over a software title that interests you, a floating description will appear.

A Modern Screenshot And Capture Tool

Here is a screenshot tool, called CloudShot, that may pique your interest. I love screenshot programs and CloudShot stands out in that it has a modern interface that allows you to share your screenshots via cloud services like Dropbox/Imgur, upload to FTP, copy or just save it.  I also dug a little deeper on the site and found there is a portable version, as well.
