Star Wars Here We Come – You may already be aware that the Navy (aboard the USS Ponce) has deployed a laser weapon that can take down small boats, drones and other light aircraft. I have seen videos of this technology in action. Inexpensive to operate, automated targeting and no noise. All you see is flames being generated from the intended target. Soon, Air Force fighters will carry laser cannons, cyber weapons by 2020 (read @ arstechnica). Folks, we are entering another era of warfare that is an indicator that star wars may not be that far off.

Add Multi-Tab Functionality To Windows 10 File Explorer – With a multi-tab file utility you can open multiple folders in the same Windows. The Windows 10 File Explorer does not have that capability, but you can make it happen by installing the extension called Clover. I nearly forgot about Clover after I upgraded to Windows 10 and when I did remember it, I was questioning, “Will it work on the Windows 10 platform with File Explorer?”.  The answer is “yes”… What is neat about Clover is that it works similar to the tabs in the Google Chrome browser. You can pin tabs and the feature I especially like is that you can add your favorite folders to the bookmark bar (for easy and fast access). I have added Clover to the downloads page (posted under the FREE SOFTWARE swarm)…

Best Web Browser Apps For Android And iPhone – “The web browsers that come loaded on smartphones aren’t always the best, especially in the case of Safari on the iPhone. It may be one of the most used browsers in the world but that doesn’t mean it is the best. These give options are easy to use and compatible with any phone so you can get browsing… ” READ MORE @ Heavy.com

If you are wondering what browser I use on my Android devices; I use Google Chrome.  I have tried them all and I keep coming back to Chrome!

Most Helpful Positive Review On The Samsung Galaxy S 8.4 Inch Tablet

After reviewing and researching the newer Android Tablet brands out there, I am pretty much sold on The Samsung Galaxy S 8.4 Inch Tablet. If you keep checking, you will find that Amazon will periodically drop the price from $399 to $349 (was at that price today when I wrote this post).  I could give some pretty good insight on this tablet; but, why reinvent the wheel (see most helpful positive review below).

Samsung Galaxy S 8.4 Inch Tablet

Samsung Galaxy S

You can get the Most Helpful Positive Review on this tablet by one of Amazon’s recognized “most trusted reviewers:

Amazing tablet, with a screen that brings color to life…

First Look: Hands on review

Rating 4.5 Stars (Excellent Tablet but not a perfect 5 star). Unfortunately there is no half rating with Amazon so I went with a 4

There is no question that Samsung has flooded the market with tablets in the past year. From low range to upper range. When the Tab Pro 8.4 came out a few months ago I knew that was the Android I have been waiting for. Of course had I known the Tab S was coming out I would have waited for this tablet. That takes nothing away from the Pro because it is an excellent tablet and I assume there will be further discounting. I broke up my review into sections so you can jump to a section faster… READ MORE

FEATURED TECH PRODUCT – Toshiba Encore 2 Windows 8 Tablet

USA Today had a feature tech write-up on the Toshiba Encore 2 that is worth a look see (titled: Review: Toshiba’s Encore 2 Windows tablet makes the grade) for those considering a full Windows 8 experience tablet at a price that is comparable (or better) than some of the other tablets (of this caliber) out there.

I also noticed that Amazon has the Encore 2 now available (click here) in the 10 inch model and (click here) in the 8 inch model.

Toshiba Encore™ 2

One of the first reviewers at Amazon had this to say about the Encore 2:

Got one yesterday at BB. Really like this tablet. Full windows 8.1 and MS Office 365 personal. You get to download another Office 365 on your home PC. You also get 1000 gb of storage on MS One Drive. Running ITunes off of my 14 gb of music on the micro SD card. Very good processor response. The 1 gb of Ram may have it limits, but no noticeable slow down. Overall, very happy. We also have an iPad and Samsung Galaxy. Cannot go wrong, when you consider the price and power of this 10 inch tablet…

Meet the Encore™ 2 tablet—a powerful performer that works the way you do. Thinner, faster, lighter and more capable than ever, this Windows® tablet with a brilliant 10.1-inch display and ultrafast Wi-Fi® goes from work to play in an instant. Split A PDF File Into One Or More Pieces

@ PDFSplit

I ran into a situation where I had a PDF document (actually a book), where I only needed certain page ranges. I went on the hunt and found an online (cloud) based application called PDFSplit. With PDFSplit you select a PDF file from your computer, your Google Drive account or your DropBox account. You can extract specific page ranges or you can break each page down into separate files. I found PDF Splitter to work wonderfully. Once the split has occurred you simply download your file.

Trying A NEW Look With Geek Squeaks’

image

As I continue to transform the blog toward the Geek Squeaks’ theme, which I am truly enjoying,  I am looking to find the best way to layout and present information to you so that you can quickly get a good idea of what the content of the post is about.

The layout I am experimenting with, starting today, begins with a brief intro summary followed up with brief mini-posts with links to the larger picture. If you subscribe to the blog via email or rss feed, you will generally see the brief intro summary and hopefully that will entice you to visit and explore the site more.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Has Gone Mobile

Many of you, I am sure, are aware of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware that is available for your PC. Let it be known that the developers of Malwarebytes has released an Android version for your smartphones and tablets…

Snap2HTML

This utility I currently use to take a snapshot of my program files directory and my portable apps directory. I do this in the event of a system crash. I can refer back to this snapshot to see what programs I had installed. I can see where Snap2HTML could be useful in a variety of scenarios.

image

Snap2HTML takes a “snapshot” of folder structures on your harddrive and saves as HTML files. What’s unique about Snap2HTML is that the HTML file uses modern techniques to make it feel more like a “real” application, similar to Windows Explorer, displaying a treeview with folders that you can click to view the files contained within (see example output). There is also a built in file search. Still, everything is contained in a single HTML file that you can easily store or distribute… GET IT HERE

The Coming Risk of Scam “Obamacare” Sites

image

In the United States on October 1, 2013 a major provision of the Affordable Care Act (also popularly known as “Obamacare”) goes into effect. The Health Insurance Exchange will go live. These sites are where people will be able to sign up for health care coverage themselves rather than through their employer.

When a person starts looking through sites to find one, at this time, they’re faced with the challenge that there’s no official marking or labeling that they can look at on a site to know that it’s an officially sanctioned site.

The next problem is that when applying for health care coverage, you have to provide all of your most sensitive personal information not only for yourself but your entire family. Most of us won’t give our social security numbers out willingly. But when it comes to health care, the industry uses that information so regularly that we’ve come to accept handing that information over as a matter of course (even if we don’t like it).

Put these two things together and you’ve got a situation where people are primed to give away their most critical personal information to legitimate sites but can’t be sure of finding their way to those legitimate sites… READ MORE AT TREND MICRO

Amazon Drops The Price On The Kindle Fire HD 8.9” Tablet

Back in January I featured the Kindle Fire HD tablet as the tech product of the week. This week is sort of a repeat on the Kindle Fire HD and the reason is simply this:  I noticed that Amazon has dropped the price $30 on the 8.9” Wi-Fi model and $100 on the 8.9” 4G LTE model (with data plans). I am sure this is to keep Amazon competitive and my guess is that they have something else coming at us on the horizon. If you want to get on board with a tablet, the Kindle HD Fire with the price drop is an excellent opportunity.

Tech Product of the Week: Kindle Fire HD 7 Inch Tablet Computer

Looking for a tablet computer reminds me of the day when desktops started to flourish and everyone wanted one. It is like shopping for a car and by the end of the day you are more confused than you were at the beginning of the day.

Here is my take on Tablet Computers…  For the home based computer user, buy a reasonably priced Android OS based tablet, such as the Kindle Fire HD (7 inch). I cannot see putting out large amounts of money for a tablet; especially, when the next latest and greatest is just around the corner. We are only seeing the beginning of this type of technology.

I recently got my hands on the Kindle Fire HD and was very impressed. With the Kindle Fire you are really getting a great tablet that features a high definition display, great sound (Dolby Audio), dual-antenna Wi-Fi, a massive selection of Android Apps and much, much more for under $200…  I especially liked that the Fire has a Micro USB 2.0 port (for connection of a PC) and a Micro-HDMI port for high definition video output to a television. Many of the other 7 inch tablets lack these external connectivity options.  All-In-All, for the home based computer user, the Kindle Fire HD is a tablet to consider.

Perform Much Smaller Mouse Movements or Touch Swipes To Close A Windows 8 App

Recently I posted an article, The Easy Way To Close A Windows 8 App, that explains how to close an app in Windows 8 by positioning the mouse pointer at the top of the app screen (where the pointer turns into a hand); then, dragging and dropping the app to the bottom of the screen.

On a desktop computer where the screen can be quite large and the travel distance (or threshold) to drag and drop the app (to close it) can be an exercise in itself. It was at this point I wondered if there was not a way to close the app quicker using less travel distance. Sure enough, using the analogy of “if you can think it, someone else has done it”, I came across a small portable utility called Close Threshold for Metro Apps.

Close Threshold for Metro Apps

By using Close Threshold for Metro Apps, if you set the sliders to the left, save the settings, you will find that you will not have to drag an app to the bottom of the screen. The travel distance to close an app is reduced dramatically resulting in a more efficient and faster method to close the app.

There is also an additional feature where you can completely disable the “drag and drop” method of closing an app all together.

With Close Threshold for Metro Apps you will able:

  • to speed up Metro apps closing with mouse
  • to speed up Metro apps closing with touch gestures
  • to disable Metro apps closing with mouse
  • to disable Metro apps closing with touch

A Web Browser Optimized For The 10 Inch Tablet PC

Making a decision on what web browser to use on your tablet PC can be a tough decision. I personally have tried, and tested, the browser that ships with the Android OS, and others such as Opera, Dolphin and Firefox. What I have found, is that due to the various compatibility issues browsers face with tablets, tablet sizes and the Android OS, each have there own little quirks. Time will tell which browser will surface at the leader when the tablet browsing war slows down.

Another browser that crossed my plate that I am now testing is called Maxthon Tablet.

image

Maxthon Tablet is specifically optimized for the 10 inch tablet.  Note:  Actually the specs on the Google Play site indicate that Maxthon Tablet is optimized run on an Android based tablet 7.7 inches or greater tablet (7.7, 8.9, 10.1).

What I am finding is that Maxthon has done really a super job on this browser.  I find browsing with Maxthon Tablet, on my Toshiba Thrive tablet, gives me the same experience I have with the browser on my desktop computer. As a matter of fact, this browser has impressed me so much that it has become the only browser on my tablet.  At this point, Maxton runs rings around the other browsers.

Fastest and smartest tablet browser. Make no mistake, with over 500 million downloads of its PC web browser Maxthon knows how to make your web sizzle. Maxthon Mobile is packed with cool features like:

Sync to the Cloud – Your bookmarks/favorites travel with you from desktop to mobile.
Theme/Skin – Ever-growing collection of skins that can customize your browser the way you like it.
WWW/WAP switch – Switch between www and WAP versions of the web at your fingertip

Speed Dial – Quick access of the best sites on the web.
Download Manager – Makes it easy to sort, schedule and grab the downloads you need: wherever, whenever.
Super Gesture – Use touch screen commands to surf with your fingertips.

Create A Mouse Cursor Infinity Effect

If you have a large screen computer monitor, you know that moving the mouse cursor around from one side of the screen to the other can be a real exercise. To help make your mouse lazy, and at the same time increase productivity, give Mousinity a try.

Mousinity

Mousinity is a portable app that creates an infinity effect for your cursor when it reaches the edges of your screen. For example if you go to the top of your screen, your mouse will appear on the bottom, right-to-left, etc.

Takes some getting used to, but once you do, you will be using Mousinity on a regular basis.

Note:  There is no tray icon with Mousinity.  To turn it “off”, simply run Mousinity again and select “yes”.

Get A Great Paid Android App For FREE Every Day

After getting my tablet PC, the Toshiba Thrive, I was excited and motivated to learn more about the Android Operating System and the apps that are available.  If you know me and follow my blog, you know that the blog predominantly features FREE software. When I started using my tablet PC I soon discovered that there were numerous FREE apps available through the Android Market.  I plan to feature some of those apps here on the blog.  Another thing I noticed is that many of the Android Apps, that are paid apps, are reasonably priced; however, I still like FREE.

Recently, while surfing through Amazon.com (one of my favorite places), I noticed that Amazon has an Appstore for Android, as well.  The Appstore also features FREE apps in addition to the paid apps.  What caught my attention was that Amazon features a paid Android App for FREE every day.

Get the Story on Android

What is all this talk about Android, Cupcake, Donut, Éclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb and the soon to be released Ice Cream Sandwich? Now I am hearing talk of Jelly Bean.

To put this all in perspective. Android is an operating system, like Windows is an operating system. The Android OS differs from the Microsoft Windows OS in that it is engineered to work on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. The delicacies’ named Cupcake, Donut, Éclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean are the names given to the version upgrades of the Android OS. For example, my Toshiba Thrive tablet PC is running the Android OS Honeycomb V3.2

To get the full history of the development of Android, I found a nice infographic, at xcubelabs, that tells the Android Story.

Toshiba Thrive – My First Tablet Computer

Apple’s iPad started the tablet PC rage, and the competition is becoming more fierce where many different types of tablet PC’s are hitting the market. Even Microsoft has put Windows 8, their next OS, into the fast track with the intention of making an operating system that will fly on the tablet platform, as well on your desktop PC (or notebook). Then there is Google and the Android OS; AND, Hewlett Packard’s tablet with their own operating system (called WebOS).

As a person who loves technology (especially computers and software), I am finding that I need to be changing my way of thinking. I came up in an environment where Microsoft Windows, desktop computers and notebook computers was the standard platform. I could not imagine anything any different. Let me tell you, we are in the midst of change and I decided to take the plunge on a tablet PC to try and get a good feel as to what direction we are heading. At the moment I see Tablet PC’s and cloud computing as being one.

I spent a great deal of time exploring the various tablet computer platforms and options out there and finally broke down and went with the chubby 10-inch Toshiba Thrive (16 GB Model) with the Android Honeycomb 3.1 OS.

Toshiba Thrive

So far I am finding it to be an awesome addition to my collection of technology toys. Toshiba has done a great job pulling the Android OS (Honeycomb 3.1) together with this computer and has even included a very nicely designed file manager. Being somewhat computer savvy; however, having no knowledge whatsoever of the Android OS, I was up and running in no time with Android. It is very easy to learn (and navigate) – and as they say, “even a caveman could do it”. I can see why Microsoft is fast tracking Windows 8.

If you noticed in my description, I described the Thrive as being chubby. Well chubby in this case is a good thing. The chubbiness is attributed to the fact that Toshiba has packed into this tablet a full sized USB port (to connect a flash drive or external drive), a full sized HDMI port (to connect to a TV), a SD Card Slot (for expansion) and get this — no tablet out there right now, that I know of, has a removable battery like the Thrive. In comparison to other tablet PCs the Thrive is in fact chubby (.62”); however, you will not even notice this once you get it in your hands.  The added ports was a no-brainer to me and this is what sold me on this tablet PC.

The only negatives I can find (at this point) is that the volume controls and power button to the Thrive are difficult to see. It is like the buttons are camouflaged into the rubberized casing.  I figure that will be a matter of me getting used to where they are located. Of course, I am in my fifties and they claim that the first thing to go is your sight. Also, the Thrive features three small LED lights to indicate the status of the power, battery and wireless connection.  This can be distracting if you let it.

Overall, I am still playing with the Thrive and may never leave my recliner ever again. Instead of reflecting a lengthy features list about the Thrive and where to purchase, you can visit the site for the Toshiba Thrive [HERE] and if you are sold on one, you can purchase the 16GB mode Thrive [HERE].  Keep in mind there is an 8 GB model, a 16 GB model and a 32 GB model.  I recommend at least the 16 GB model.

Now Available – HP TouchPad Wi-Fi 9.7-Inch Tablet Computer

Tablet PCs are taking off like crazy and the new HP TouchPad powered by HP webOS 3.0 is no exception. We are early in the game with the tablet computers, but so far the concept is a winner. As a matter of fact, this concept makes perfect sense and will change the way we use computers, not only in  home, but in the workplace. HP summed up the TouchPad by saying it’s the perfect size to contain the sum of all human knowledge.  If you are not familiar with tablet PCs; what you see in the picture below is the whole computer. If you have Wi-Fi in your home, you can carry this computer, as you would a book, from room to room, and access the internet from those locations.

HP TouchPad

  • TouchPad measures 9.45″ wide by 7.48″ high by 0.54″ deep. It weighs in at approximately 1.6 pounds (that’s 740 grams if you’re counting).
  • It has a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core APQ8060 processor.
  • TouchPad comes with Qualcomm Adreno 220 core graphics capability. Movies and games will seem ten times bigger and more real than the lightweight tablet you’re holding in your hands.
  • Front and center on TouchPad is the 9.7-inch diagonal, LED-backlit, glossy multitouch display with IPS wide viewing-angle technology.
  • HP webOS lets you move back and forth seamlessly between multiple applications and activities.
  • TouchPad is a device for entertainment and immersing yourself in gaming action.
  • Available in a 16GB or 32GB model.

Windows 8 Is Really Just Around the Corner

Many people that use home based computers are shocked when I tell them that Windows 8 is just around the corner; then, to really put it into perspective, I even have people ask me, “Is there a Windows 7?”. I often have to pinch myself back into reality and realize that people really do not care about Windows versions; they just want a computer that is super easy to use, gets them on the internet, Facebook, Twitter, and blah, blah, blah…

Windows 8

Then to top it off, I am reading “do not buy a computer this year”, Windows 8 is just around the corner. Then furthermore, Microsoft is playing catch up with the tablet PC world by offering Windows 8 as an operating system that will be geared to run on anything from a tablet PC to a desktop PC. By the time they do catch up, the iPad will be several version models ahead.

Also, so far the Windows 8 desktop looks like the tiled user interface that is similar to the Windows 7 phone. I always did say that PC’s would get simpler and the end user would click on pretty graphics (or tiled images) to launch their apps.  I really do think we are in the midst of a transition from desktop PC models to the more portable tablet models. Again, goes back to what I said before, people just want a computer that is super easy to use, gets them to the internet, Facebook, Twitter, and blah, blah, blah…  Microsoft and all the big players out there know this!

Windows 8 is really just around the corner…  How do I know?  It is called competition and the competition has turned it up a notch; PLUS, all you have to do is Google Windows 8 and you will see results like below (for your reading enjoyment):

Digital Free-Hand Drawing Software (for FREE)

This past year I have seen numerous photo and graphic editors pop up from nowhere and most have been quite remarkable… If you are someone who has talent in the area of sketching, drawing or painting, then you will be interested in knowing that there is  “FREE” software package available, called “SmoothDraw”. SmoothDraw supports many kinds of brushes (pen, pencil, dry media, airbrush, bristle brush, image hose, etc.), retouch tools, layers, image adjustment, and many effects… According to the website SmoothDraw works great with tablets and Tablet PCs. I found it worked very well, using what limited talents I had, by just using the mouse.

The install appears to consume only 3.5 MBs of space; however, is dependent on .NET Framework 2.0, which is common on most of today’s systems. I personally found this app to be quite user friendly and could also serve some benefit to those who need something to enhance and touch up photos. SmoothDraw is a new one on me and appears to be quite a powerful application, considering its small size. I encourage you to click the screenshot below to get a good look at the clean interface of this application.

System Requirements
Win98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista

Recommend a tablet/stylus for drawing

Smooth Draw Sceenshot Sm

If you are a user of Universal Extractor, as I am, you can take the SmoothDraw install file (setup file) and extract it to any directory you desire.  Using this method, based on my testing, SmoothDraw can be made into a portable app (for your flash drive) and used on other computers that are supported by the .NET Framework 2.0.
