Windows 10 October update delete your files? This tool might recover them | by ZDNet

I don’t like the idea of these updates (major updates) causing issues. Here is an option, as suggested by ZDNet, to recover files in the event you encounter this issue.

For some unknown reason, moving up to Windows 10 version 1809 may delete all the files in user folders. The folders remain, but the files within them are gone, leaving users in potentially a worse pickle than ransomware victims experience. However, there is a chance that early Windows 10 upgraders who encountered this problem might be able to recover lost files by using the free version of Avast-owned Recuva recovery software.

What is up with the huge Calculator in Windows 10, Microsoft? | gHacks Tech News

Those who use the Calculator regularly may have been shocked by the giant size of the Calculator in the new version of Windows 10. The calculator takes up most of the screen when launched initially. The screenshot below shows it right after launch on a 1920×1080 monitor on a PC running Windows 10 version 1809.

Black Friday 2018 and Cyber Monday 2018: When and where to get the best deals | by ZDNet

WHEN IS BLACK FRIDAY?

Nov. 23, 2018: As always, Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, but that hasn’t stopped retailers from using turkey day to get a head start on the festivities (though not without a backlash from some stores and shoppers).

WHEN IS CYBER MONDAY?

Nov. 26, 2018: While Cyber Monday was created as a way for e-tailers to grab a share of the action physical stores got on Black Friday, it’s lost some luster as those same companies not only started offering Black Friday deals on their websites, but also extended their cyber sales over several days, if not weeks.

According to this article, Microsoft has announced that it will indeed start charging Windows 7 customers a monthly fee from January 14th 2020, if they want to keep their computers safe.

Microsoft has always described Windows 10 “as a service” and leaks have already revealed new monthly charges are coming. Of course, for Windows 7 owners this was never something they expected to pay. But times change…

Say What? “Windows on Chromebooks? Stay tuned.” | Computerworld

Having always been a die-hard user of Windows and now favoring the Google Chrome OS; I have to agree with the ComputerWorld author here on this one…

dell chromebook 13 lid half open

Chromebooks have become all-purpose, do-everything, productivity machines. Gartner and IDC both agree that the PC market is finally growing again, and Chromebooks get much of the credit for this.

Could you soon see Windows running on a Chromebook? Clues are pointing that way. But why would Google do it? Here’s my take.

The Novelty Factor of “Running Windows 95 in an “app” is a dumb stunt that makes a good point” | Ars Technica

You may have been reading where you can revisit Windows 95 by running it as an app… From what I gather it is not fully functional; but, is pretty darn good (for an app) that will give the younger techs a “look see” into Windows 95.  Here is an interesting, “matter of fact” take from Ars Technica on this matter that points out this is merely a novelty item.

This is, of course, software piracy. The developer of the app has no rights to distribute Windows 95 like this, and I’m a little surprised that the app hasn’t been yanked from GitHub yet. And for now, the app is just a toy; there’s no real reason to run Windows 95 like this, other than the novelty factor of it actually working.

This is interesting… Chrome may soon add a feature that will speed up the entire internet – BGR

Google Chrome working on a new feature that may speed things up, even more…

In reality, every major web browser out there right now is about the same right now, all things considered. Sure they look different and offer slightly different features at times, but they all offer impressive performance and the same basic design. That may soon change, however, because Google is working on a new feature for its Chrome web browser that could be a game-changer for users. In fact, with one single feature Google might manage to speed up the entire internet for Chrome users.

Android Authority Reporting New Integrated Service For Android and Chrome OS To Be Unveiled

Perhaps as early as next week, Google will unveil a new service called “Better Together” that will give your Android device and your Chrome OS device the power to work as a team.

Some things you will see come out of this are:

  • SMS Connect, which will let you read and respond to text messages within Chrome OS. This will likely be different and probably more robust than the recently-unveiled Android Messages for the web.
  • Instant Tethering, which will allow you to use your phone as a hotspot and then connect to the internet on your Chromebook instantly. You can currently do this with any laptop, but it will now be “instant” with Better Together.
  • Smart Unlock, which will help you avoid typing your password into your Chromebook over and over again. Instead, if your phone is nearby, your laptop will automatically unlock.

You Need To Check This Out (The World’s First Chrome OS Tablet)

If you have not used a Chromebook, you don’t know what you are missing. It is about the easiest form of a computer you will find that is based on the Chrome operating system. The schools are big fans of Chromebooks and I highly recommend them for home use (and for our Mom’s and Pop’s). I am big on computers and technology, worked in the field for years, worked with (still do) the Windows platform for years; BUT, now I am finding the Chromebook the computer I go to at home. NOW, there is something new in the Chromebook world that be of interest to you (see below) that has really caught my attention.

It’s a Chromebook. It’s a tablet. It’s both. Acer just unveiled the world’s first Chromebook tablet: the Chromebook Tab 10. And yes, you can play Fortnite and PUBG on it. But outside of fighting tooth and nail for that illustrious chicken dinner, Acer is targeting educators and students with this handsome new slate. The company has yet to share pricing or launch dates. Instead, here are my first impressions.

NEW Gmail – Here’s what makes it so special (and a little frustrating) And How to Activate It

If you haven’t already done so, you need to upgrade and try the NEW Gmail interface on the web. So far, I am loving it. Here is a good article (see source link below) by Inc. that will give you the skinny on what to expect; and, that getting to the new interface is only a couple mouse clicks away.

To get the new Gmail look (and features), open your Gmail, click on the settings cog (top right) and select the option “Try the new Gmail”… In the event you do not like what you are seeing, you can always go back to the classic Gmail by following the same steps.
