Geek Squeaks (#2015-35) FEATURING — GEGeek NOW On Facebook — and MORE GREAT STUFF

GEGeek NOW On Facebook – The motherload of all tech sites, GEGeek, is now featuring their GEGeek Tech Toolkit on Facebook. The toolkit, available through donation at the main GEGeek web site, is a complete collection of over 400 tech related FREE programs and suites (all available from a menu launch utility). If you are an information technology professional the GEGeek website and the GEGeek Toolkit should automatically become part of your mindset. Mike and Jason at GEGeek have gone to great lengths to review, collect, and maintain the information (and toolkit) that is available. Jason recently joined Mike to assist in maintaining the motherload. I personally thank both of them (and I encourage you to do the same). After you donate to acquire the toolkit, you are then entitled to the upgrades (which occur on a regular basis).

Online Games To Pass The Time Away – I regularly visit the USAToday web site to get my initial daily dose of news. Did you know that on the USAToday web site there is a link that will take to you a wide array of online games that they sponsor and maintain. Initially when you load the USAToday site, you will find a link a the top of the site for Crosswords. Click on that link and you will be taken to the Crossword puzzle page and on the page (at the top of the crosswords) you will find additional links for puzzle, arcade, strategy, brain, casino, and quiz type game challenges. Prior to playing any of the challenges or games, you will be required to set though a short in length advertisement…

WordWeb Upgraded To Support Windows 10WordWeb has been a mainstay on my computer for years. It is a very useful and comprehensive one-click English thesaurus and dictionary for Windows. It can be used to look up words from almost any program, showing definitions, synonyms and related words. It includes pronunciations and usage examples, and has helpful spelling and sounds-like links. I especially like the one click lookup where you hold the CTRL key and right mouse click on a word to get the definition. WordWeb can also be installed as a portable app. You will be prompted for that option after you run the install file. Also, if you like WordWeb and use Google Chrome, be sure to download their WordCaptureX browser extension…  NOTE: WordWeb has been added to the What’s On My PC download page under the FREE Software swarm.

Fix Specific Windows 10 Problems and Issues With This Utility – The Windows Club has a developed a utility called FixWin 10 for Windows 10, that is a portable freeware application that allows you to fix and repair Windows 10 problems, issues and annoyances. This new release of FixWin has an updated UI for Windows 10 and includes a new section to fix Windows 10 common problems and issues specifically.

Digital Trends’ (brought to you by Drippler) Best Android Apps For Any Occasion This list of Android Apps is a pretty good list in my opinion and is a good starting point if you are looking for good reputable android apps (for any occasion). The list was originally posted on Digital Trends and it made Drippler (the Android app that features new tips, apps, features, updates, accessories and more)….

Where To Look For Deals On Amazon – As the holiday shopping season approaches and we Countdown To Black Friday, many of us will be doing our shopping online. One of my favorite shopping sites is Amazon. For example, to look for bargains I will visit their Today’s Deals, their Outlet, or their Warehouse …  I have found items, using these three options, to get really good deals. If you want to visit the Earth’s Biggest Selection to get a full directory listing at Amazon, CLICK HERE

Awesome Tech Sites – Awesome Tech People

If you are a information technology junkie, as I am, you need to routinely visit the following sites to stay abreast of the constant change in the world of information technology. Each of these resources can be had by clicking on any of the tabs at the top of the What’s On My PC blog. What you will find in this mix is Awesome Tech Sites — Awesome Tech People …

Bookmarks4Techs – This is a conglomeration of links that I personally maintain that are all tech oriented.  I am constantly adding to the listing. This has picked up in popularity and I am now receiving links from site developers asking that their sites be listed.

GEGeek – My opinion! If you are into information technology as a student or work IT for a living, GEGeek is top gun when it comes to resources. What is unique here is that Mike works in IT to make a living; YET, has the capacity, time and passion to share his knowledge. On top of this, he also maintains the GEGeek Tech Toolkit that is the most comprehensive collection of tech tools you will ever come across. No need to search the net for this stuff, Mike has done the hard work for you.  Awesome site — Awesome guy!

Downloads – One of my passions is software, apps, portable apps, browser add-ons, etc… Recently I changed up the Downloads page to create what I am calling swarms of software, apps, etc… that will continue to grow. The focus is quality; not quantity. To make it to a swarm the software has be known, has to be good; and, must demonstrate that it will be around for awhile (through continued development). You can submit recommendations of software that you think should be added to the swarm and I will consider it based on the criteria, as indicated.

Tech News – I was recently on the hunt for a good news resource and went back to my blogging roots. Click on the Tech News tab and you will be redirected to Bill Mullins’ Weblog – Tech Thoughts. Bill on every Monday, Wednesday and Friday will post an edition of tech news that he has scoured the internet for. I know Bill and I know he is very devoted to anything that he does. Awesome site — Awesome Guy!

Tech Toys – This is a site that I put together that is a direct link to Amazon. The objective is to give you a resource to search and look around for tech toys (computers, hardware, software, smartphones, tablets, etc…). I often use it to get a baseline pricing on items.

Archives – If you click on the Archives tab this will take you to a page that is every posting I have ever made at What’s On My PC that I want to share with you.

I have been blogging since July 2008.  Like Mike (at GEGeek), Bill (at Tech Thoughts), Steve (at TCAT Shelbyville), and Tech Paul (at Tech-for Everyone); we all have a passion for information technology AND from that passion we enjoy sharing information with the world.

Check Out What’s NEW at What’s On My PC

I am constantly trying out new ways to help drive traffic to the blog so that when a you land here you will leave with something that will encourage you to return. One of the most underused sections of the blog are the tabs at the top. I recently have added two NEW tabs that may be of interest.

What's On My PC

By clicking on these tabs (with the exception of Home and About Me) you will be taken to a wealth of tech related information, software, news, products, etc…

To explain each tab:

Bookmarks4Techs – This is another site that I maintain. Bookmarks4Techs.com is one of, if not, the largest listing of tech sites on the internet. If you have an interest in the world of computers and information technology, I think you will find this site to be a very valuable resource. I work hard to keep the site up to date; and, as a result you will frequently see changes in the listing. There are also some good RSS tech news feeds on the site, as well.

GEGeek – This site, in my opinion, ranks up there with being one of the most awesome tech resource sites out there. The site owner has a vast background in information technology and computers and has managed, over the years (with an obvious passion), to compile what you see on the site. Also, just to point out, make sure you check out the GEGeek Tech Toolkit while you are there. The toolkit is regularly updated and can be downloaded by clicking on the link at the top of the site.

Downloads – I put this together using an online cloud based service called NetVibes that compiles (daily) a large RSS listing of FREE software and download sites that are very reputable.

Tech News –  Again, using NetVibes I was able to compile a large listing of tech news feeds.

Tech Toys (NEW) – Many of the tech products I feature here on the blog I often use Amazon as a research point. Amazon does not necessarily always have the best pricing point, but it does have (in my opinion) one of the best customer review and ratings section. As a result of my passion for technology products I have put together, for the reader’s of this blog, an Amazon Affiliates Store (called What’s On My PC @ Amazon) that specifically features technology related products that can serve as a launching point for any tech products you may be looking for and wanting to learn more about. Simply visit the store and type into the search box whatever it is you are looking for.

Archives (NEW) – This is a new tab that I have put up that I consider the motherload. One of the problems with a blogging platform is many people will click on an article that was posted, but do not realize there are other articles, as well. If you click on the Archives tab you will land on a page that will literally list every blog article I have ever posted (which is nearing 2000 articles).

About – This page is my bio and yes I really do look like that picture…

Rick Robinette, What's On My PC

Be Sure To Visit Bookmarks4Techs

When I started blogging I started bookmarking tech sites that I visited. After a period of time I had quite a collection and thought, this may be beneficial to others (who have the desire to learn about computers and information technology). Bookmarks4Techs has become a hobby of sorts.

As of this posting, the collection has grown to approximately 814 sites (and continues to grow). If you are interested, please visit Bookmarks4Techs.com. Don’t let the name fool you, that this site is for those with technical expertise; there is something there for everyone. If you do not see your favorite tech site, please let me know and I will consider adding it.

Today’s Geek Squeaks – October 9, 2013

A summary of Today’s Geek Squeaks:

Squeak #1 – (A Portable Safe For Your Files and Passwords): I have been on the hunt lately for FREE software to protect the data on my flash drives and came across a winner, called Protectorian ToGo… Not only does Protectorian encrypt and protect your sensitive files, it also has a built in vault to store your passwords (SEE BELOW);

Squeak #2 – (Nexus 4 Specs vs. Nexus 5 Specs): I am in the market for an unlocked, reasonably priced smartphone… I am patiently waiting for the release of Google’s Nexus 5 smartphone or whatever the naming convention will be for this coming release. Google recently exhausted their inventory of the Nexus 4. To get a comparison of specs, DroidLife came across a leaked service manual for the Nexus 5 (SEE BELOW)…

Squeak #3 – (GEGeek On Speed Dial): Notice the tab at the top of the page labelled “GEGeek”… It is there for a reason (SEE BELOW); AND,

Squeak #4 – (Create and Manage Your Own Cloud Storage ): My birthday is around the corner and I think I found my gift. It is the Western Digital 3 TB My Cloud that would allow me to access my data from anywhere in the world (SEE BELOW)…

Nexus 5 vs. Nexus 4 [Specs]

@ DROIDLIFE

Thanks to a leaked service manual for the upcoming LG Nexus 5 that arrived over the weekend, there really is very little we don’t know about the phone outside of a release date and price. Well, the name “Nexus 5″ is still not yet 100% confirmed, meaning Google could end up going “Nexus 4” again like they did with the 2013 Nexus 7. We continue to see references to both names here and there. But either way, we feel as if we have a pretty good grasp on all things new Nexus phone… READ MORE

FREE eBook Introducing Windows 8 – An Overview For IT Professionals

I came across this eBook today (at Microsoft Press) that may be of interest to IT Professionals and home based computer users alike. The book (in PDF format) describes the new and improved features of Windows 8 with focus on management, deployment and security. If you are new to Windows 8, this is a good read and best of all, it is FREE.

[ Download Here ]

If above linke does not work, try this one [HERE]

An Overview For IT Professionals

The Windows 8 operating system is the newest member of the Microsoft Windows family. It differs from earlier Windows releases as much for what it does not change as for what it does change. That is, the features that IT pros loved about Windows 7 are still there in Windows 8—just better. The same keyboard shortcuts, management tools, security features, and deployment options are available in Windows 8. But in many cases, Windows 8 improves them in intuitive and significant ways. Some examples are the ribbon in File Explorer and faster disk encryption when using BitLocker Drive Encryption. This book describes these enhancements plus many of the new features in Windows 8.

Bookmarks4Techs – New Site Design

Bookmarks4Techs

A new site design is in place, at my sister site – Bookmarks4Techs. Page loads are now faster allowing you to grasp as much information as possible in a shorter amount of time. One of the main features of the site are the RSS feeds located on the sidebars, which are feeds from some of the top computer, software and information technology sites on the internet. The new design makes those feeds standout and allows you to read those feeds as separate blocks of text. The older design I was using made those feeds run together and difficult to decipher; also, I was noticing choppy page scrolling due to the amount of information that was being presented.  In other words, the coding of the theme I was using could not handle the load. The new theme design is a simpler interface, with one goal in mind; to handle the ton of information that I am throwing out there to you in a faster and readable manner.

When visiting the site, make sure you click on the Bookmarks4Techs tabat the top of the page. You will be surprised to find links to over 600 computer, software and information technology sites on the internet.  This list continues to grow… All links will open in separate browser tabs allowing you toggle back and forth from the site.

To help support the site and put some butter on my bread, I am currently experimenting with the Amazon.com Affiliate program and will be posting (as I have) links to computer, software, and information technology products that I find to be of excellent quality. One of my passions is looking for the new tech toys…

I hope you bookmark and plan to visit Bookmarks4Techs on a regular basis …  Thank you!

Bookmarks4Techs is Experiencing a Growth Spurt

This is an update of sorts on my sister site Bookmarks4Techs. I think I found the niche for the site as the number of daily page views has grown by leaps and bounds. The site features numerous sidebar RSS feeds from some of the top tech sites out there, links to every tech site that I can get my hands on, and links to tech products (and deals) that I find at Amazon. One hot draw to the site is the Hot Tech Site of the Day where I feature a Tech Site each day with links to articles hosted by the selected site. Bookmarks4Techs is coming into its’ own and is relatively new since I recently made changes; however, don’t be shyed away.  There is some really great content there for everyone and a great way to learn about computers and information technology.

Be Sure To Visit My Sister Site – Bookmarks4Techs

If you are regular visitor to What’s On My PC, you surely have noticed that I have links posted to my sister site – Bookmarks4Techs.

image

Bookmark4Techs started out as a personal project of mine as a result of managing my personal blog – What’s On My PC.  When searching for content for my blog, I found myself constantly trolling the internet in search of the latest and the greatest in computers, software, and information technology.

I found, for the matter of convenience, that if I listed the sites I regularly visited on a web page, I could troll the internet at a much faster rate (especially with today’s tabbed browsers). It was after a certain point of collecting numerous tech related websites that I realized that this collection may be of use and interest to others.  I love visiting other tech blogs (and sites) and I am constantly adding to this collection.  It is amazing how good theses sites and blogs really are.

Bookmarks4Techs is not just for techs; it is for everyone. As a matter of fact it is a great conduit to Amazon.com where I am currently serving as an affiliate. For example, if you click on the computer and accessories tab you will be redirected directly to Amazon’s site on Computer Accessories. It all has been an experiment of sorts to test out the affiliate experience (to see if it really works) and at the same time give people a launching point to other technology sites. You will find the sidebars loaded with RSS feeds to some of the best tech sites out there; plus, if you click on the Bookmarks4Techs tab you will be taken to my collection of tech sites (currently over 600 sites and growing).

Also, in an effort to draw people to Bookmarks4Techs I am constantly trolling for tech bargains and new technologies that have surfaced on the market and any other tech related products that may be of interest to you. I especially use Amazon.com, TigerDirect, Circuit City, NewEgg, and CompUSA to locate products of interest.

I ask that you “pass the word”…

Many of you who visit the blog know that I maintain a second site called Bookmarks4Techs.

Bookmarks4Techs

Bookmarks4Techs, in my guesstimation, is one of the largest listings of tech sites on the internet. Today I punched through the 500 mark and have a ton more to add to the list.

If you are someone that has a desire to learn about information technology and computers, then Bookmarks4Techs will literally keep you busy, not for hours, but for weeks.

Performed Some Site Maintenance – Blogroll Updated

After receiving some prompting and prodding I have cleaned up the blogroll somewhat so that the experience is more useful.  Any site that was on the blogroll that had not posted any articles within the past year have been taken off of the blogroll and archived (just in case they become active again).

To my readers out there, if you do not know what a blogroll is; it is a list of other blogs that a blogger (such as myself) might recommend by providing links to them (usually in a sidebar list).  You will find the blogroll here at What’s On My PC on the right side of the blog.

The blogs on my blogroll, which I am most proud to be associated with, are the following.  Take a few moments and hit these blogs. If you visit a site, leave them a comment that Rick from What’s On My PC  sent you. I promise you; you will not regret it.

Bookmarks4Techs at the 460 Mark

Bookmarks4Techs Bookmarks4Techs is the largest repository of listed tech sites currently available on the internet. If you have the desire to learn about computers and information technology, then Bookmarks4Techs is your place to start!

To help support the site, I ask that any tech site already listed, to please consider a link exchange by adding Bookmarks4Techs to your blogroll. Help me pass the word!

As I have mentioned, the site is in the development stages.  I recently changed the site so that when you visit you directly are piped to the collection of bookmarks and RSS feeds. I also have embedded links (in red) to great Amazon deals that are tech and computer related.  I am thinking of adding a tab with “Hot Deal(s) of the Week” with a review on hardware or software related items.

Largest Repository of Tech Sites on the Internet

Most of the readers and visitors to the blog have seen me posting site updates to my sister web site, Bookmarks4Techs.com. Bookmarks4Techs is the largest repository of listed tech sites currently available on the internet. If you have the desire to learn about computers and information technology, then Bookmarks4Techs is your place to start!

The site is very NEW and is an experiment of sorts in a couple of different areas.

I have been posting ads on the site, using Adsense and the Amazon Affiliate program.  What I am finding so far is that I need to stay away from saturating the site with ads, so I have reduced that somewhat so that page loads are faster.  I’m not going to get rich from it anyway.

Link Exchanges

Another change I am currently working toward is providing RSS feeds to my favorite blogs and sites in the sidebars so that the reader can review, in one place, what is going on with many of the other blogs and sites. If you are interested in a link exchange, I will post your RSS Feed in the sidebar of the blog and will increase the font size of your site name on the bookmarks list. I will continue to post the RSS feeds (for link exchanges) until the sidebars are full.

When you first pull up the site you will see recent site updates. To get to the bookmarks, click on the bookmarks tab at the top of the page.

I am hoping to get this site to the popular status level. Again, if interested in a link exchange, visit Bookmarks4Techs  [ HERE ]. To all my reader, bookmark this site and drop by often.

Bookmarks4Techs: Site Update #13

Be sure to visit my NEW sister site; Bookmarks4Techs. The site features frequent updates that include links to FREE software, new tech sites, featured sites, and even an option to get really good deals on tech products (or anything) directly through Amazon.com. The goal of the site is to grab every tech site out there and have the sites posted at Bookmarks4Techs.  If you are a student of information technology, here is your starting point. Spread the word, post it on your blogroll, email your friends, facebook it, twitter it; any exposure is very much appreciated.

Bookmarks4Techs: Site Update #6

If you have been following the blog, you may have noticed (and read) about Bookmarks4Techs.

Bookmarks4Techs is a new geek web project that I am currently playing around with. It is sort of in the experimental and tweaking mode; therefore you will see frequent changes occurring. In addition to 422 total bookmarked geek sites, I am now posting announcements when a new site is added to the collection, featured FREE software (that I use and endorse), featured sites (that I use and endorse) and some Geek Gear that I think is worth mentioning. You will also see in the sidebars of the site RSS feeds to some of my favorite techie type sites.

I plan to post the Bookmarks4Techs updates here on the blog on a regular basis. Any favorable (or unfavorable) comments or suggestions are welcome, in regards to these future updates.
