Geek Squeaks #2015-11 @ What’s On My PC (Featuring: A Quick Study On The Anatomy Of A Good Password and MORE)

A Quick Study On The Anatomy Of A Good Password – I plucked the information below from my work security notices about passwords and thought it would be good to share with my readers. It pretty much sums it up nicely about the creation and the composition of a good password.

Did you know the longer the password, the harder it is to crack? Consider a 12-character password or longer. Things to avoid: Names, places, dictionary words. Mix it up. Use variations on capitalization, spelling, numbers, and punctuation. Most importantly, don’t save passwords or use “remember me” especially on public computers.  Make sure your computer is secure.  Never give your password out to anyone and don’t post your password in plain sight.

From my experience I have found that people that use computers (and other devices) on the personal level (such as at home) use very weak passwords, never change them and are very liberal on who has access to those passwords. To solve this problem, I highly recommend that you use a password manager such as S10 Password Vault that will help you manage, organize, store and generate your passwords.

Have you ever tried going offline for days at a time? I don’t know if I could detach myself from my devices. I am serious, I have never tried it. Found this blog post at the Huffington Post “Why You Need To Go Offline For A Week” where the author explains that “you go completely offline (no internet allowed at all) and off grid (so no phone calls, texts etc.) to have a complete break from technology and communication with anyone you’re not physically with”. I encourage you to read this article to see his end results… I definitely need to go offline, get off the grid and go to hermit land.

To demonstrate my recent frustrations with Windows 8 (8.1) in setting up a new PC, I went on the hunt for a wallpaper background that shows how I feel right now about Windows in general. FREE Backup Software That Provides Basic And Advanced Features (such as disk imaging)

Learn a byte at a time, at What’s On My PC, with Geek Squeaks’ — featuring a round-up of tech products, news, software, apps, wallpapers, articles, how to, Android, Windows, you name it… Be sure to check out MORE GEEK SQUEAKS BELOW!

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] FREE Backup Software That Provides Basic And Advanced Features (such as disk imaging)

I have been involved in computers in some form or another for over 25 years. My strength has always been in the area of software and learning what I needed to know to keep the flow of the workplace healthy. I will tell you right off the bat, I am not an expert; however, give me a little time and I will find the answer. Since my retirement, my desire to keep up with the trends has not diminished; AND, if anything it has become even more focused. I have learned to become a master of computer information.

My focus is no longer in a workplace setting, but is more in the direction of what can I contribute to help folks at home. Today, I want to push you in a direction of making sure you are backing up your data (documents, pictures, music, etc…) and even backing up your entire hard drive.

One of the first things you need to do is get yourself a good external drive that will become an extension of your computer and can be easily removed (and stored away) if need be (depending on how important is your data to you). I currently use several external drives, with one of those drives being a portable hard drive (see examples here). I use this portable hard drive to store a backup image of my entire hard drive that will capture every bit of data on the drive at the time of the backup. I then remove the drive and store it off site. I know there are numerous cloud computing backup options out there where you can move your personal (and private) files to the cloud. Even with this option being available, I still (highly) recommend the process of backing up your data and external drive (at your house). This all may sound like a pain, but really it is not; especially when I introduce you to AOMEI Backupper Standard.

AMOEI Backupper Standard is a FREE backup software solution that I can personally attest does work (especially the disk imaging component). AMOEI gives you the ability to perform a system backup, a disk backup, a customized files/folders backup and a partition backup.

image

Please do not let these terms scare you off. AMOEI will walk you through the process of performing these tasks. On a personal level, as mentioned, I use the disk imaging component of AMOEI to make an exact copy of my hard drive in my computer.

In closing, to give an example of how AMOEI, saved my butt…  I recently noticed and determined that my hard drive in my computer, after 7 years, was working its’ way toward failure. Using AMOEI, I routinely performed disk imaging backups and had those images stored on an external drive. When it was time to install the new drive, I created a boot CD (or DVD) using the AMOEI software. Using the AMOEI software, I created boot CD (which is easy to do). After installing the new hard drive, which was larger in size and contained no data, I booted from the CD.  Within the boot CD is a built in version of the AMOEI software that allowed me to pull the image from the external drive and restore my data (an exact copy of my old hard drive) to the new drive (a new Seagate Hybrid Drive with SSD). I always keep my fingers crossed when performing tasks such as this, but AMOEI performed flawlessly.

The Benefit of Turning Off GPS On Your Android Phone (KitKat Version) And Using WiFi To Determine Your Location

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] The Benefit of Turning Off GPS On Your Android Phone (KitKat Version) And Using WiFi To Determine Your Location – When the GPS function is activated on your phone it is constantly performing a satellite handshake to pinpoint your location. Personally, I do not see a need for GPS unless you are going a trip and need to use the phone for navigation purposes; PLUS, GPS turned “on” drains the battery.

The 2nd best option to GPS, that is more battery friendly, is to use Wi-Fi and the Mobile Networks to determine your location. To do this on your Android Phone (KitKat version), Go to Settings > Location Mode AND select Battery Saving (Use wi-fi and mobile networks to determine location).

The bottom line is that you want to make sure your computer is completely up to date. To determine if you have the Windows 8.1 Update installed go to the Start screen. If you see a Search button near your account name at the top of the Start screen, you already have the update.

Learning About Secure Boot In Windows 8

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] Learning About Secure Boot In Windows 8 – This geek squeak is about a feature, called Secure Boot, that is built into the firmware architecture of the newer computers that make sure that your PC boots using only software that is trusted by the PC manufacturer.  When the PC starts, the firmware checks the signature of each piece of boot software, including firmware drivers (Option ROMs) and the operating system. If the signatures are good, the PC boots, and the firmware gives control to the operating system. From what I have read, Microsoft had encouraged the computer manufacturers to put this in place, as a security measure to prevent a Windows 8 computer from being compromised.

The problem I experienced with this, not working on computers as much since my retirement, is that I did not know about Secure Boot. I had attempted to boot a Windows 8 based (newer) PC from a third party DVD called Hiren’s Boot CD and the PC would not allow the CD to perform the boot process. I was in and out of the BIOS to make sure I had the CD/DVD drive in line to be the first boot device and it would not boot from the CD/DVD (or USB drive) due to the Secure Boot feature.  The PC, during the boot process, would look at the CD/DVD (or USB drive), BUT as indicated in the first paragraph Secure Boot did not recognize the signature and would bypass the boot disk and try to boot into Windows.

The workaround I found to this is that in the BIOS of this particular PC, I was able to disable Secure Boot and enable Legacy Boot. After I performed this task, the PC booted from the boot CD/DVD (or USB Drive). The process of disabling this feature varies, depending on the make and model of your computer. I encourage you to research this through your computer manufacturer.

To learn more about this and to validate my findings, please read Secure Boot Overview (at Microsoft) and Disabling Secure Boot.

FREE Self Managing Android Battery Saving App

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] FREE Self Managing Android Battery Saving App – I am big on the Android Smartphones; currently owning a Nexus 5. It has become (literally) my computer in my pocket; however, I learned early on that it is important to monitor its’ battery life on a daily basis in order to get the most out of my computer in my pocket. To assist me with this task is the FREE Android App called Battery Doctor (Battery Saver).

Battery Doctor

I have been using this app for quite awhile and can attest that it will significantly improve your battery life. It is smart in that it self manages and optimizes your phone in a way that it will shutdown battery eating background apps and hardware (such as bluetooth, wifi, etc…) when these components are not in use (or are not needed). There is also power management features built into the app  to let you know how much power your apps are consuming, how much battery is left, when is a good time to charge and when not too charge.

Overall, one of my favorite utilities on my phone that I highly recommend.

GEEK SQUEAKS – Featuring Steps To Clean Your Flat Panel Monitor (and other screen devices)

[
FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] – How To Clean Your Flat Panel Monitor – Most of the time when we decide to clean the monitor it is at a time when we are not really prepared to do it.  We’re sitting there and it is something obvious (like a smudge, a fingerprint, a bug etc.) that catches our attention and motivates us to to perform a cleaning. Ant

As a result of this, we end up using glass cleaner and paper towels, which is a big “NO, NO”…  Paper towels or any paper product for that matter contains micro-particles that can scratch the monitor; AND glass cleaners contain chemicals (such as ammonia, alcohol and phosphates) that can damage the optical coating.

5 Step Process:

  1. Turn “OFF” the monitor (actually turn “off” everything including the computer, etc. OR better yet unplug the monitor from its’ power source).
  2. If available, use a can of compressed air to remove any dust particles.  Believe it or not, dust particles can causing scratches.
  3. Use a lint free (microfiber) soft cloth, similar to what you use to clean eyeglasses with, to remove dust particles.
  4. If necessary dampen the cloth with “water” (recommend 50/50 distilled water and vinegar mix), and gently wipe the screen off.  Do Not use commercial cleaners, as they contain damaging chemicals; and, again do not use paper towels or tissues (can scratch the screen).
  5. Post a sign, “Touch my screen and you’re a goner!”  For some reason, some people have to be all “touchy feely” with monitors.  Flat panel screens are not designed to be touched (unless it is a touch screen monitor, tablet, smartphone, etc…).

    NOTE:
These same steps can be used to clean devices that are designed to be touched (such as smartphones, tablets, touch screen monitors, etc…)

If your flat panel monitor is really dirty, there are commercial LCD, LED, Plasman monitor cleaning solutions and micro-fiber cloths available at most office supply stores.

GEEK SQUEAKS – April 8th Is D-Day For Windows XP

If you are a Windows XP user and have been procrastinating about upgrading to Windows 8 or to a new PC (or you just plain do not care), here is the official word from Microsoft that may encourage you to move forward:

Microsoft has provided support for Windows XP for the past 12 years. But now the time has come for us (Microsoft), along with our hardware and software partners, to invest our resources toward supporting more recent technologies so that we can continue to deliver great new experiences.

As a result, after April 8, 2014, technical assistance for Windows XP will no longer be available, including automatic updates that help protect your PC.

If you continue to use Windows XP after support ends, your computer will still work but it might become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Also, as more software and hardware manufacturers continue to optimize for more recent versions of Windows, you can expect to encounter greater numbers of apps and devices that do not work with Windows XP.

April 8th Is D-Day For Windows XP

The key issues in the above notice is that you will no longer receive automatic updates, you will be vulnerable to security risks and viruses (which could compromise the security for a whole lot of people) and as time goes on you will experience software and hardware compatibility issues.

GEEK SQUEAKS – Featuring Google Chrome’s Remote Desktop App – AND MORE

Did you know you can access any remote connection enabled computer with the same Google Account? You can with Google Chrome’s Remote Desktop App. The nice thing about this app is that Chrome does not need to be opened on the remote computer.

If interested in giving this a spin, visit the Chrome Remote Desktop App page (in the Chrome Web Store) where you can install the app.

Once installed and you open it for the first time, you will go through an authorization process and will be asked to see your email address (which is the validation key to your account); to see your other activated Chrome remote desktop computers; to receive (and send) chat messages so that the computers can talk to each other; and, authorization to allow remote access even if no one is at the PC using the application.

GEEK SQUEAKS – Set, Forget, Simple and Fast Backup Software

I actually forgot about this software being on my PC. It is called Bvckup; and, it is designed to make maintenance free backup copies of files and directories.

Bvckup

Once you perform the initial setup (which is very easy to do), Bvckup will do the rest of the work for you. For example, I have four main (root) folders on my PC that contains the bulk of my personal files. After performing the initial setup, Bvckup will automatically perform backups of these files and folders in real time (anytime a file or folder changes). The program will also alert you to any errors it may encounter. I discovered, as a result of running, Bvckup that I had some directories (or folders) where there was some file corruption going on.

Bvckup is currently FREE and is in the Beta stages of development.

GEEK SQUEAKS – Use Windows 8.1’s Quick Access Menu To Shutdown Windows

What gets me about Windows 8 and 8.1 is that you have to go on an Easter egg hunt to find the most basic of functions that we commonly use in Windows. I really think Microsoft has a lost sight of what the end user’s needs are and have never heard of the K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid).

For example, anyone who has not experienced Windows 8 or 8.1 will immediately discover that they cannot easily find a shutdown button in order to turn the computer “off”. Recently I set up a Windows 8 box for my parents and I ended up creating a shutdown button on the taskbar so that they would not have to go digging for this function. To the home based end user, these sort of things can be a challenge.

For others out there, in an effort to help you out…  If you have upgraded to Windows 8.1, the easiest way to get to the Shutdown or Signout options, is to right mouse click on the Start Button which is located in the bottom left corner of the screen (or on the very left side of the task bar at the bottom of the screen). If you are not seeing the Start Button, hover your mouse pointer in the bottom left corner and the button will appear.  When the button appears, right mouse click on the Start Menu button and a menu will pop up.  This is called the Quick Access Menu.

Quick Access Menu

One the menu pops up you will see an option for Shutdown or Sign Out; and, if you hover your mouse pointer over that option another menu will appear to the side giving you the ability to Sign Out, Sleep, Shut Down or Restart.

This may sound like a lot, but once you accomplish this feat it will become second nature; PLUS, the bonus to this you will know how to get to many other features in Windows via the Quick Access Menu such as the Control Panel, Task Manager, File Explorer, etc…

GEEK SQUEAKS – Keep Track Of Important Dates On Your Android

I recently added a new site to Bookmarks4Techs, named Android Awesomeness; and, in doing so I noticed that they had an Android App posted, called Days that will be of great assistance to me (and you).

As I continue to age and ferment like wine, I have a tendency to forget things. I don’t know if it is the fermenting process or it is just me learning to mellow out more; however, my forgetfulness needed tended to. This is where Days will help me out.

Days

Days— is a beautiful countdown app using the popular card-based UI introduced by Google. It is designed to be an efficient as well as elegant tool for your Android device.

Days— provides all essential functionalities needed to remind you of your important dates, and gives you choices over colors if you want to keep things organized. Since this app is built based on open-source libraries, it is definitely free with no ads.

GEEK SQUEAKS – A Must Have Tool For The Tech Toolbox

One thing I learned from working with PC’s is always have a way out when things go south. When trouble surfaces, you have option in Windows by the nature of its’ build to turn back the clock and restore a PC to a prior time when things were running OK.  This is very useful when a software install goes wrong, or a Windows update is not playing well; and, during those occasions where a malware infection is suspected.

The problem is that you often have to drill down to get to the Windows Restore. To solve this problem, I came across a tool, that is available as a portable app, called Restore Point Creator that will allow you to easily create and manage restore points.

Follow the simple program layout and you have your System Restore Point created in no time at all…

Create System Checkpoint – Creates a System Restore Point with the name of “System Checkpoint made by System Restore Point Creator”

GEEK SQUEAKS – Defining Refresh, Reset and Restore In Windows 8.1

The hardest part about using a computer is learning the language or jargon that is used. Learn the language and the rest comes easy!

Windows 8.1 is no exception. For example, did you know if you are having problems with your Windows 8 computer you can perform either a refresh, a reset or a restore? You can, but what does each of those terms mean in helping you resolve a specific problem?

Each term has a specific purpose that if not selected properly for the nature of your problem, could result in you losing personal files (such as your pictures, documents, movies, music, etc…). All the more reason that you backup those personal files.

So what does Refresh, Reset and Restore mean in Windows 8.1?

Refreshing your PC reinstalls Windows and keeps your personal files and settings. It also keeps the apps that came with your PC and the apps you installed from the Windows Store.

Resetting your PC reinstalls Windows but deletes your files, settings, and apps—except for the apps that came with your PC.

Restoring your PC is a way to undo recent system changes you’ve made.

To learn more about and how to get to these settings (of Refresh, Reset and Restore) in Windows 8.1, go right straight to the Microsoft Repair & Recovery site [HERE] .

GEEK SQUEAKS – Using Software To Change Your Computer DNS Fast (and Safe)

When you type in a web address from your browser, your computer connects to a DNS server (through your internet service provider) that takes that address (which is in a human readable form) and translates it to a IP address (which is a set of numbers). In the end, computers connect to each other on the network by their technical internet addresses called IPs: IP (v4) or IP (v6).

The DNS is typically transparent to most of us, but it is important to know that you can alter the DNS settings on your computer to serve specific purposes (such as to protect your kids from porn sites). Manually performing these changes is something most people will not do, fearing they may mess up their computers.

An automated solution or way to pick and choose a DNS is through software that is engineered to help you make the changes and to understand those changes.

One solution I use is Chris PC DNS Switch…

Chris PC DNS Switch

Chris PC DNS Switch has built-in preset groups of servers in its DNS database, ChrisPC DNS Switch offers you the freedom to conveniently manage your DNS settings for all the network adapters belonging to your PC/laptop running Windows. End result is that you can pick and choose a DNS that is suitable for your situation (such as protecting the kids from porn).

  3. When the Users Account box appear, under the Users Tab you will see he following: Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.
  4. Uncheck the box and click OK
  5. When the Automatically Sign In Box appears, type in your Windows Live Account username and password and click on OK
  6. Restart your computer to see if it took. During start up of the computer you will briefly see the log in screen (if you followed the steps correctly).

Geek Squeaks’ for the Week is a weekly round-up of tech products, news, software, apps, wallpapers, articles, you name it;  from my favorite tech web sites… I just plain love tech!

#1 – A REALLY NICE WINDOWS 8 APP that gives you the ability to quickly search and download Youtube videos (coverts to MP4) and/or audio (converts to MP3). I tested out this app (called Download YouTube) and found it to do what it claims. I was able to quickly search for YouTube music videos that I was interested in, download them, and convert the audio in the video to MP3. Definitely one of the few Windows 8 Apps that I have on my PC…

Go to the Windows Store on your PC and search for Download YouTube or find out more HERE

#2 – BASED ON A SERIES OF LEAKS there is possibly (already) going to be an update to Windows 8.1…  You got to be kidding???  Microsoft, I do believe, is listening to their user base. Most people, like you at home, were thrown a doctored curveball when you got that new computer and it started up to a bunch of blocks.  Anyhow, PCWorld has a nice article, Windows 8.1 Update 1: Everything we know so far that will help to bring you up to speed. I think the forthcoming changes, if rumored to be true, will get Microsoft back on track for desktop and notebook computer users…

image

With the next update to Windows 8.1, Microsoft really wants mouse-and-keyboard users to feel comfortable with modern apps.

We now have a good sense of what to expect in Windows 8.1 Update 1, thanks to a series of leaks from Win8China and reliable Russian blogger WZor, along with reporting by Paul Thurrott and ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley, two writers with a strong track record for breaking early Windows news.

#3 – THIS WEEK’S RANDOM TECH SITE PICK (with sample article), from Bookmarks4techs.com, is:

#4 – A WINDOWS PROGRAM TO REMOVE MALWARE from your PC, called Malwarebytes Chameleon

image

One of the strategies often used, when a computer is infected by malware, is to “try” and get Malwarebytes Anti-Malware installed; HOWEVER, many times the malware itself will prevent the install. This is where Malwarebytes Chameleon comes into play. Malwarebytes Chameleon technologies gets Malwarebytes Anti-Malware installed and running when blocked by malicious programs.

#5 – A VIDEO ON HOW TO EASILY MAKE A TABLET OR SMARTPHONE STAND that can be folded up (and actually could be carried with you if made out of an old credit card):

Easily Make A Tablet or Smartphone Stand

#6 – THE WALLPAPER OF THE WEEK is very techie in nature in that it is a pic of the inside of a hard drive. This wallpaper is featured at hdwallpapers and can be downloaded to match the resolution of your screen. I definitely added this on to my collection…

#7 – THE TECH PRODUCT OF THE WEEK features the Acer Aspire S7-392-9890 13.3-Inch Touchscreen Ultrabook. This is an example of the direction that ultrabooks are heading with powerful processors, solid state drives, long battery life; all in a thin architecture.

What’s On My PC – Geek Squeaks’ for the Week

THE ROUND-UP FOR THE WEEK:

HOW SECURE IS MY PASSWORD? is a web based utility that will assist (and educate) you on creating secure passwords. Most home based folks have a tendency to maintain easy to guess passwords and often use the same password on numerous sites.  I do not foresee this changing until other “more secure” options appear (more info below)…

HOT ARTICLE THIS WEEK AT WHAT’S ON MY PC was “LIMITED TIME ONLY – Rack Up Free Gigabytes Of Online Storage Space”. If you want some online storage, be sure to check this out (more info below)…

PROTECT (AND LOCK) INSTALLED ANDROID APPS on your smartphone or tablet with the FREE utility called App Lock (more info below)…

TOP TEN: MAKING WINDOWS 8.1 WORK LIKE WINDOWS 7 is featured on this week’s random tech site selection (more info below)…

AxCrypt – Password Protect Files With Strong Encryption is a FREE file encryption software for Windows. It integrates seamlessly with Windows to compress, encrypt, decrypt, store, send and work with individual files. I use this to encrypt files I store online (more info below)…

THIS WEEK’S WALLPAPER is of a white dove with a blue background.  I figured I may as well include a wallpaper each week in the round-up… (more info below)…

I GAVE UP THE INKJET PRINTER AND WENT WITH A LASER PRINTER (Brother HL-2270DW). As a result I gave up scanning capability and color printing. I now scan with my smartphone and pipe the scan job to the printer. I don’t miss the color, due if I want photos printed, I use either a local kiosk or use one of the online service.  So far I love this printer; and, not forgetting to mention it is going to save me money when I have to replace the toner cartridge. One of the low end cartridges gives me the ability to print 1200 page and for a few bucks more I can get the better cartridge for 2600 pages.  This printer prints from the cloud, prints duplex, and is fast (more info below)…

The Coming Risk of Scam “Obamacare” Sites

image

In the United States on October 1, 2013 a major provision of the Affordable Care Act (also popularly known as “Obamacare”) goes into effect. The Health Insurance Exchange will go live. These sites are where people will be able to sign up for health care coverage themselves rather than through their employer.

When a person starts looking through sites to find one, at this time, they’re faced with the challenge that there’s no official marking or labeling that they can look at on a site to know that it’s an officially sanctioned site.

The next problem is that when applying for health care coverage, you have to provide all of your most sensitive personal information not only for yourself but your entire family. Most of us won’t give our social security numbers out willingly. But when it comes to health care, the industry uses that information so regularly that we’ve come to accept handing that information over as a matter of course (even if we don’t like it).

Put these two things together and you’ve got a situation where people are primed to give away their most critical personal information to legitimate sites but can’t be sure of finding their way to those legitimate sites… READ MORE AT TREND MICRO
