WeatherDan – FREE Program To Quickly Retrieve Current Weather Conditions and Radar

I love weather apps and WeatherDan is a new one on my plate. What I like about WeatherDan is that it sits in your system tray (bottom right corner where the time is) where you can click on the lightning bolt icon to get the current weather. You get your weather results by entering your zip code.  Right mouse click on the icon and you can get the radar (which can be set for a view up to 192 miles).  Once you have the current weather and/or radar on the screen, simply left mouse click on them and they will disappear. It appears the source for the weather is harvested from Weather.com due to the link option on the menu that will take you to the Weather.com web site (to get the complete weather).

This Worked For Me – Get One Year Ad Free Subscription to Weather Undergound With This Code

Weather Underground is claimed to be the internet’s first online weather service.  It is a proprietary weather service that is based on actual cumulative community based weather data points.

I recently came across a code that I was able to use to get a one year ad free subscription to their service. I am also seeing where people were able to use the code to renew their subscription, as well. It is my thinking they have this code floating out there as a promotional gimmick. If you get this to work on your computer and you are also an Android user, you can download/install the Weather Underground App (from the Google Play Store), log in with your credentials, and you will also have an ad free experience on your Android device, as well.

You initially have to sign up for an account, for which you will be sent an email confirmation that will allow you to login to the account. It was after I logged into my account and went to the membership services that I was able to enter the code.  Hope this works for you as well; as, Weather Underground is a great weather service.

An Ad Free Weather Service

There are a lot of really cool (and dependable) weather services out there, but what upsets my apple cart is that when I go to those sites they are driven by advertisements to the point that the only storm I see is the outpouring of the ads.

With a winter storm bearing down on my location in Maryland, I thought it would befitting to present to you an ad free weather service, that I depend on, called the National Weather Service (NWS).

National Weather Service

The National Weather Service (NWS) , once known as the Weather Bureau, is a part of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States government. It is headquartered in Silver Spring, Maryland.

When you get to the National Weather Service homepage simply enter your zip code and press “go” to get the weather information for your location.  If you notice, the page load is fast and there are no advertisements; and, not forgetting to mention all the weather information you will ever need.

As an added bonus, my brother Tim, who serves as a weather consultant in Pumpkin Center, MD,  pointed out to me, on the NWS site, you can get a full screen nationwide snapshot of the weather [HERE]Also, if you want to listen to the NWS weather broadcasts, over the internet, the best listing I found for this is actually at another favorite weather site of mine called Wunderground.  You can get to the listing of NWS broadcasts at the Wunderground site [HERE] .

The NWS is tasked with providing forecasts, public warnings, and other products to organizations and the public for the purposes of protection, safety, and general information. This is done through a collection of national and regional centers, and 122 local weather forecast offices (WFOs). As the NWS is a government agency, most of its products are in the public domain and available free of charge.

The NEW Weather Channel App for Windows

If you follow my blog, then you know I am a lover of clocks and weather applications. Today, I was pointed to the NEW Weather Channel App for Windows that is now part of my collection.

Weather Channel App

The NEW Weather Channel App features a large interactive map and radar, instant access to severe weather alerts, video forecasts, current conditions, hourly conditions, and extended forecasts. You can add and monitor up to 10 locations and the local temperature is available in the system tray. After installing and launching the app you will notice that the background theme changes with the current weather (and between night and day). The only fault I can find is that you will be presented with an ad in the bottom right corner; however, considering it is FREE and by the Weather Channel, I can overlook the ad.

A Simple, Fast and Easy, Online Weather Source

I am a real fan of weather applications and it is amazing how the development of these applications have evolved over the years to where there are numerous sources to go to for the weather.

Recently, I came across a lesser known online source called HAMWeather that has really become my daily go to source for the weather.

Screenshot

Screenshot

What I like about HAMWeather is that the page is a fast loader; and is laid out very nicely to give you your current conditions, the outlook, the extended forcast and some adjoining radar maps (with no ads).  The site also loads nicely on the tablet PC’s and smartphones, as well.

HAMWeather does not stop there…  If you dig further and follow the top menu bar links you will see numerous other options you can load to get further specifics.

From what I could tell, HAMWeather can provide weather conditions for any location in the world; however, the weather details are lessened depending on the location you are looking for.

Monitor Multiple Types of Natural Hazard Events Worldwide with Earth Alert

Many people today express concern about the magnitude of the natural disasters that have occurred or are presently occurring. I personally do believe mother earth is going through a noticeable change; however, natural disasters have always been part of the life cycle.

In today’s world we have become more exposed and sensitized to these events, in real time, through the use of the internet, digital media and satellite communications.  In other words we hear (and see it) as it happens and we actually become part of the story; whereas in the past we were told about the story following the event.

To put this into perspective and to give an example, I want you to take a look at an online cloud application called Earth Alert that uses Google Map overlay technology to show various natural hazard events around the world.

Earth Alert

Earth Alert has the ability to display various natural hazard events as they occur and automatically retrieve the latest information from various live data feeds available on the Internet and present it to you in a convenient arrangement of reports, maps and images. For example, I selected the natural hazard event of “Fire” and earth alert displayed fire events for the U.S.

Earth Alert

Remember much of what you are seeing in Earth Alert is based on data feeds from various sources and may not show every event occurring in the world. What Earth Alert does point out is that mother earth continues to naturally evolve and it is technology such as this that makes us more aware of these events.

You can visit Earth Alert [HERE]

WeatherByte – A Clean and Simple Weather App

It does not get any simpler than this! If you want a to display the current weather, temperature, forecast, time and date (at a defined location) without a lot of fuss, then WeatherByte is for you.

WeatherByte

Simply visit the web site [ HERE ], enter your location and how you want the temperature reflected. That is all there is too it.

WeatherByte Location

Weatherbyte is great to display on your computer, home theater, Google TV, Boxee, etc…  Instead of using a screensaver, I often bring up WeatherByte and have it on the screen so that I have a quick (and fast) glance of the current weather conditons.  Hmmm…  Maybe the developer could turn this into a screensaver app.

WeatherByte is also available as a Google Chrome app from the Google Chrome Web Store [ HERE ] .

A FREE Google Chrome and Firefox Browser Weather Extension

Weather Watcher Live, a very popular weather software program, is available as a browser extension for Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. The good about this is that it is free and offers similar features that is available in the software version (that you pay for). I have been following Weather Watcher Live from its’ early development days (when it was free) and I can tell you the developer (Mike Singer) has put his heart and soul into the development cycle of this weather program.

Just like its’ software counterpart, the Weather Watcher Live browser extension can be configured to provide real-time weather conditions, for your area, from the NWS weather stations, real-time WeatherBug weather stations and weather stations in the WeatherBug backyard network.

Weather Watcher Live

As you can see in the screenshot above, you can click on tabs to get the current weather (Now), hourly forecast, daily forecast, maps and alerts. The map tab will redirect you to the WeatherBug website where a wide array of maps can be viewed.

Another feature that is worth noting is that you can view the current temperature and conditions from the browser toolbar (see below) by simply positioning your mouse pointer on the temperature icon.

Weather Watcher Live

If you are a Google Chrome browser user and you want a nice browser extension to keep track of the weather, then give Weather Watcher Live a try [ CLICK HERE ] .

For you Firefox users, you can get the Weather Watcher Live browser extension [ HERE ].

WeatherBar for Windows 7

So many different ways to track the weather on the internet these days. I came across a simplistic app, called WeatherBar, that integrates with the Windows 7 taskbar to show the weather at a specific location. Just download, unzip to a folder of your choice, and run the WeatherBar executable. Windows 7 and an internet connection is required.

WeatherBar is an application that lets you use the Windows 7 taskbar to display the weather condiitons in the application icon.  instead of constantly switching to the desktop to take a peek at the pinned gadget, the user can simply take a look at the taskbar, or right-click on the application icon to read the forecast.

To change the settings in WeatherBar, click on the “gear” (see below) to change the update interval and whether you want the weather displayed in the metric or imperial formats. To set your location, click on the “pencil” (see below) and enter your zip code.

A FREE Full Screen Interactive Weather Map

Here in the United States the weather this winter has been anything but normal. As a result, tracking weather conditions has moved up on the priority list in our daily routines

To assist us with tracking the weather, Weather Underground has recently developed a new cloud app (with touch screen technology in mind) called FullScreenWeather.com that works in conjunction with Google Maps.

image

To use this cloud app, simply visit FullScreenWeather.com (which is a redirect to the Weather Underground web site) and enter your zip code (or city, state, country, Latitude or Longitude).

image

Once your zip code is entered and the map for your locale loads, simply bookmark the site in your browser (for future one click access).  Once the map loads you have option of displaying the following overlays: temperature, precipitation or cloud cover. Using Google Maps technology, in conjunction with the weather data overlays,  you have the control to interactively zoom in and out and change the maps appearance.

The map also displays widgets of sorts (with convenient links to the Weather Underground website) that displays current and forecasted conditions, as well as, weather alerts

Keeping a pulse on the weather conditons…

Recently, one of my favorite weather monitoring applications (Weather Watcher Live) went from freeware to shareware. As indicated, I said “one of my favorites”.

imageAnother favorite weather application of mine, that is FREE, is very good, is “ad free”, and has been in the loop for some time is “Weather Pulse”. I did not realize how much I missed this weather app until I started using it again.

Weather Pulse is an integrated weather monitoring utility that displays detailed weather conditions, in an attractive interface, for whatever location(s) you desire. With Weather Pulse you can get current conditions, 5 Day Forecasts, Hourly Forecasts, numerous radar image options, and tone alerts. You can even set your wallpaper background to a weather radar image that will periodically update so that you know what the weather conditions are at any given time.

image

Weather Pulse also provides an interactive tray icon and desktop desklet that displays the current temperature. You can double click on either and the Weather Pulse application window will display.

If you want the weather at your fingertips, without ads, and is FREE (with no catches), then give Weather Pulse a try!

Monitor the Weather from your Windows Desktop

Monitoring the weather from our computers is nothing new; HOWEVER, monitoring the weather from your Windows desktop, in “real-time” is a relatively new concept.  This concept has been captured by Mike Singer who is the author of Weather Watcher Live. Weather Watcher Live is a FREE customizable desktop weather station that will display (in a very attractive interface) your neighborhood weather conditions in real-time.  The weather stats that is displayed in Weather Watcher Live is from the WeatherBug weather stations, or as reported by the National Weather Service (NWS). I am sure you are thinking if there is WeatherBug then there are advertisements.  There are no advertisements, whatsoever, in Weather Watcher Live.

I have used Weather Watcher Live since its’ beginning; and the really cool feature I like about it is that it is very customizable and you can even configure it to display weather maps as your wallpaper background on your computer.  Any computer I have installed this on, the user sits back in awe.

[ Weather Watcher Live – Get It Here ]

Weather Watcher Live

WeatherWatcherLive

Description from the publisher:

Automatically retrieve the current conditions, hourly forecast, daily forecast, severe weather alerts fromNWS (US only), and weather maps for thousands of cities world-wide. The current conditions can be quickly viewed by holding your mouse pointer over the Weather Watcher Live system tray icon.

Weather Watcher Live will allow you to automatically retrieve your weather data at a set interval, display the current temperature in a customized tray icon, display the current condition image in a tray icon, designate which weather information is displayed in the Weather Watcher Live system tray tooltip, convert the weather data using almost any conversion, display a weather map as your desktop wallpaper, log the weather data in any format, export the weather data in any format, customize the look of the Weather Watcher Live interface and icons via skins, and much more.

Note: If you prefer not having the weather delivered to your desktop by Weatherbug, then checkout Weather Watcher.  Weather Watcher is the predecessor to Weather Watcher Live.  As a matter of fact, if you are on a dial-up connection, I recommend you use Weather Watcher.

A cloud based weather app with a social appeal…

This time of year at my location, the weather is normally in the low to mid 70’s and very pleasant; however, the past 2-(two) weeks we have experienced conditions from unseasonably hot weather (above 90 degrees) to very rainy weather. During unusual weather changes, such as this, I have come to rely on internet based weather services to monitor the conditions for severe weather. I have always had a fascination with computer software applications that have the ability to provide weather stats (and alerts) and give that feeling that you have your very own weather station.

iMapWeather.com

iMap Weather

A recent search for new weather applications on the internet led me to a FREE “cloud based” application called iMapWeather. This application is a Flash based application integrated with Google Maps API that uses radar; and reportedly some of the most sophisticated forecasting available. This weather application is the first I have experienced where weather information and user-generated (social) media features are wrapped in the same package. For example; after setting up an account with iMapWeather, you can share photos, videos, posts and events with other iMapWeather users.

[ click for screenshot ]

imap_sm11

This app features enhanced mapping, with a realtime doppler radar data overlay, that is precisely localized down to the latitude and longitude with roadmap, satellite and terrain views. You can also zoom in (to house and street level) and zoom out (for a broader view); AND, go full screen to precisely track current conditions.  You can toggle “on and off”, the radar, current conditions, global lightning, and buoy ship data.

[ click for screenshot ]

iMap Screenshot

Other facts about iMapWeather:

  • iMapWeather’s “Hurricane” tab gives users the ability to track tropical systems, follow their projected paths and view footage and commentary from bystanders who are witnessing a storm’s development.
  • With iMapWeather’s “Winter” tab, users can get snow and ice reports and fInd out current conditions at ski resorts across the United States.
  • iMapWeather’s ClickCast® provides weather information from all over the world in real time. Click on any location, from Paris to Beijing, for current weather conditions and forecasts.
  • Users can share content via e-mail from a computer or mobile device.
  • Social media content is displayed on an algorithm that includes newness, popularity (views) and ranking.
  • iMap Weather is in beta and you are required to sign-up for an account to take full advantage of the social media features.

Weather Watcher Live – Walmart World During A Storm

This past Saturday we were shopping in our neighborhood Walmart when a severe thunderstorm hit the area. I was back in the electronics, computers and gadgets section (of course). The intensity of the storm was unbelievable. Now, you have to keep in mind, Walmart is like shopping in a building the size of a football field and hopefully it is built to withstand any elements of nature that is thrown at it. Normally, if it rains and you are in Walmart, you won’t even know it until you go outdoors. Not this time… After a few noticeable claps of thunder, the torrential rain started and then came the hail. That got my attention… At that point I debated leaving the electronics section and proceeding directly to the hunting and survival section; however, I proceeded to the front of the store near the main entrance and what I saw outdoors I never, ever experienced before. It was like watching storm stories on the weather channel. It looked just like one of those tropical storms you see on storm stories. At this point, my instincts were telling me to find my wife, which is like looking for a needle in a haystack in Walmart. When I did find her, the storm had slowed considerably. She asked me, did you see that wind, rain and hail? What got me is that she is the one that is scared of storms and she was still shopping for groceries. She actually scolded me and said, “You need to settle down”… I couldn’t believe it, our cars could have blown away, and everyone was still shopping, including her. Next time there is a disaster, I’m going to Walmart world, which is another world where the serenity of shopping shelters you from the real world.

When I got home, the storm had passed. Our house was still there, which meant my computer was safe. I immediately booted up the computer to check the weather. The software that I use to check the weather is called Weather Watcher Live by Singer’s Creations. It is an awesome and powerful desktop weather software application; and, it is free. I have been following and using this software for several years. The author of the software, Mike Singer, is constantly improving the software and really listens to the users in the forum on his site.  If I only had Weather Watcher Live with me, while in Walmart world, I could have seen that storm approaching and ran for the car.  This is definitely my weather software of choice.

Weather Watcher Live - Screenshot
Weather Watcher Live - Screenshot

Recently, Singer Creations, released a “beta” version of Weather Watcher Live.  Weather Watcher Live has the ability to pull “real time – live data” from weather stations that you select. The software is designed to pull down data from stations sponsored by WeatherBug. I want to point out, this is not WeatherBug software. It also pulls weather information from the National Weather Service.

Listed are some of the features:

  • See a quick snapshot of the weather for today/tonight.
  • View the current radar/satellite image.
  • Access severe weather alert information.
  • Review a graph of today’s min/max weather information and the current rate of change.
  • Scroll or flick the slider bar at the bottom of the window to view the upcoming hours/days/moons.
  • Advanced weekly weather forecasts
  • Severe Weather Alerts
  • View weather news, videos, photos, and cameras.
  • Tons of weather maps
  • Ability to set the your computer wallpaper background to display a weather map of your choosing.
