Train Yourself To Use The Windows 8/8.1 Quick Access Menu (aka: Win +X Menu)

If you are a Windows 8 user, teach yourself to to use the Quick Access Menu (also known as the “Win + X menu” where you hold down the “Windows Key” on the keyboard and hit the “X” key on the keyboard).

To get to the Quick Access menu using the mouse, right mouse-click the “Start Button” at the bottom-left corner of any screen (including the Start screen or the Desktop) and the menu will pop up. If you don’t see the “Start Button”, move your mouse to the lower-left corner, and the “Start Button” will appear.

Quick Access Menu

The reason you should train yourself to use this menu is that this menu was designed by Microsoft to give you a specific (hidden) location to quickly access the most commonly used and advanced options on your computer, no matter what screen you are working from (for example: you can do things like shut down and sign out, get to Control Panel, Task Manager, File Explorer, or open a Command Prompt window).

Few people know about this menu; and, the few that do know this menu is there, forget to use it. In a nutshell the “Quick Access Menu” gets you to the nuts and bolts of the Windows 8 operating system.

Understanding The Difference Between Refreshing, Resetting Or Restoring Your Windows 8.1 PC

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] Understanding The Difference Between Refreshing, Resetting Or Restoring Your Windows 8.1 PC– If you are a Windows 8.1 PC user and you are finding that your computer may not be running up to par; you have several options to either refresh, reset or restore your PC. It is very important to understand the difference between the three.  No matter what option you choose, ALWAYS back up your personal files.

  1. Refreshing your PC reinstalls Windows and keeps your personal files and settings. It also keeps the apps that came with your PC and the apps you installed from the Windows Store.
  2. Resetting your PC reinstalls Windows but deletes your files, settings, and apps—except for the apps that came with your PC.
  3. Restoring your PC is a way to undo recent system changes you’ve made.

The RESTORE option is the least aggressive, with the RESET Option being the most aggressive. Just remember, if you do a RESET you will lose your personal files and data.

GEEK SQUEAKS – Featuring How To Use Your Smartphone As A Document Scanner AND Copier

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK]
How To Use Your Smartphone As A Document Scanner AND Copier
– I recently made a decision to ditch my all-in-one inkjet printer due to the continued cost of inkjet cartridges. I decided to go with a basic level, black and white color, wireless laser printer where the cartridges are about the same price (as the inkjet). The printer I purchased was the Brother HL-2270DW Compact Laser Printer with Wireless Networking and Duplex.

The positive sides to this is that I can print many, many, many more pages, at greater speed, with the laser vs. the inkjet; plus, I gained the benefit of the wireless printer technology (that I did not have). I try to not print anything at all; however, I recently took on another task in my life where hardcopies of documents is required.

The negative sides to this is I cannot print in color and can no longer scan documents; HOWEVER, if you read on, there is a solution.

I was not too concerned about the printing in color. Most of what we print at home is pictures (which is very costly); plus in my planning of all of this I decided if I needed pictures printed out, I would visit a local kiosk to perform this task (where the finished product is much better that the typical inkjet printer).  Now, losing out on the document scanner did have me concerned; HOWEVER, I came up with a solution (in my planning) to use my Nexus 5 Smartphone as my document scanner.

The Nexus 5 is an Android based phone; therefore I needed to find an Android app that was made to perform document scans. After trying many variations of Android document scanners, I settled for the app called CamScanner. The FREE version of CamScanner should be all you need.

CamScanner

What I am finding now, using CamScanner and after training myself (through experimentation), is that I can scan a document (using my smartphone) very quickly; and then following the scan can send and share the document at light speed.  For example, I will scan a document and then send it to any of my online accounts, such as my Microsoft OneNote notebook, my email account, my OneDrive account, etc… When you scan a document with CamScanner, the app will perform an auto-correction to line up the document, adjust the clarity of the document and convert it to a PDF file.  There are many manual corrections that can be performed, as well, within the CamScanner app.

Then the question came up in my mind, “What if I want to copy a document and print it???  With CamScanner this is not an issue.  Using my new wireless laser printer I was able to send print jobs directly to the printer (from anywhere in the world) using Google Cloud Print. By the way, your printer does not have to be wireless or Google Cloud Print ready to print from the internet (or the cloud).

In the end, my planning has so far paid off; plus, I am not caught up in the world of inkjet cartridges where the cartridges often cost more than the actual purchase of the printer. Also, give CamScanner a try. Once you learn how to use it, you will not miss that cumbersome inkjet all-in-one document scanner.

CamScanner – Available at the Google Play Store

GEEK SQUEAKS – Use Windows 8.1’s Quick Access Menu To Shutdown Windows

What gets me about Windows 8 and 8.1 is that you have to go on an Easter egg hunt to find the most basic of functions that we commonly use in Windows. I really think Microsoft has a lost sight of what the end user’s needs are and have never heard of the K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid).

For example, anyone who has not experienced Windows 8 or 8.1 will immediately discover that they cannot easily find a shutdown button in order to turn the computer “off”. Recently I set up a Windows 8 box for my parents and I ended up creating a shutdown button on the taskbar so that they would not have to go digging for this function. To the home based end user, these sort of things can be a challenge.

For others out there, in an effort to help you out…  If you have upgraded to Windows 8.1, the easiest way to get to the Shutdown or Signout options, is to right mouse click on the Start Button which is located in the bottom left corner of the screen (or on the very left side of the task bar at the bottom of the screen). If you are not seeing the Start Button, hover your mouse pointer in the bottom left corner and the button will appear.  When the button appears, right mouse click on the Start Menu button and a menu will pop up.  This is called the Quick Access Menu.

Quick Access Menu

One the menu pops up you will see an option for Shutdown or Sign Out; and, if you hover your mouse pointer over that option another menu will appear to the side giving you the ability to Sign Out, Sleep, Shut Down or Restart.

This may sound like a lot, but once you accomplish this feat it will become second nature; PLUS, the bonus to this you will know how to get to many other features in Windows via the Quick Access Menu such as the Control Panel, Task Manager, File Explorer, etc…

GEEK SQUEAKS – Defining Refresh, Reset and Restore In Windows 8.1

The hardest part about using a computer is learning the language or jargon that is used. Learn the language and the rest comes easy!

Windows 8.1 is no exception. For example, did you know if you are having problems with your Windows 8 computer you can perform either a refresh, a reset or a restore? You can, but what does each of those terms mean in helping you resolve a specific problem?

Each term has a specific purpose that if not selected properly for the nature of your problem, could result in you losing personal files (such as your pictures, documents, movies, music, etc…). All the more reason that you backup those personal files.

So what does Refresh, Reset and Restore mean in Windows 8.1?

Refreshing your PC reinstalls Windows and keeps your personal files and settings. It also keeps the apps that came with your PC and the apps you installed from the Windows Store.

Resetting your PC reinstalls Windows but deletes your files, settings, and apps—except for the apps that came with your PC.

Restoring your PC is a way to undo recent system changes you’ve made.

To learn more about and how to get to these settings (of Refresh, Reset and Restore) in Windows 8.1, go right straight to the Microsoft Repair & Recovery site [HERE] .

How To Skip The Windows 8.1 Start Screen When Logging In

If you have upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, there is now an option built-in that will allow you, when you log into the computer, to bypass the Start Screen and go directly to the Desktop.

I have been using Windows 8 since its’ inception and I am finding the Start Screen to be more of an aggravation than anything. Microsoft heard the complaints and provided this option in the Windows 8 upgrade (to 8.1).

Here are the steps to take to tell your computer to automatically go to the Desktop, when you log in…

  1. From the Windows Desktop, right mouse click the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen and choose properties on the pop-up menu.
  2. Click the Navigation Tab
  3. In the Start Screen section, select the checkbox labelled “When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start”.
  4. Click Apply then OK

Taskbar and Navigation Properties

This does not disable the Windows Start Screen whatsoever. The easiest way to toggle between the Desktop and Start Screen is to hit the Windows key located on the left side of the keyboard between the Crtl key and the Alt key. You can also take the mouse pointer to the bottom left corner of the screen and click on the Windows logo when it appears.

I now scan with my smartphone and pipe the scan job to the printer. One of the low end cartridges gives me the ability to print 1200 page and for a few bucks more I can get the better cartridge for 2600 pages.  This printer prints from the cloud, prints duplex, and is fast (more info below)…

You are then offered a sort of Hobson’s choice: Pay a fine immediately, or face prosecution for downloading child pornography… READ MORE

How to sign in directly to the Windows 8.1 desktop

@ bleepingcomputer.com

image

One of the biggest issues many people have had with Windows 8 is that it automatically logs you into the Windows 8 Start screen rather than the traditional Windows desktop. For those people who do not want to use the Start screen and instead work off the desktop this change has been very frustrating. If this has been an issue for you, Windows 8.1 allows you to skip the Start screen and boot directly into the desktop… LEARN HOW HERE

The Start Menu Will Be Back In Windows 8.1. Is This An Upgrade or a Downgrade?

One thing that I have learned over the years is to try and look at Computer Information Technology through the eyes of the end user, which is YOU!. When Microsoft released Windows 8, which by the way is an excellent operating system, they forgot to look at it through the eyes of the end user, which is YOU! For me, it was another toy to play with and I made myself understand it (because that is what I do); but, 99 percent of the people who use computers are not like me.  99 percent of these people were finally getting somewhat in the groove of learning and navigating Windows and then Microsoft dropped the Windows 8 bombshell that really threw people off. I daily hear the complaints about the Start Menu being missing and that you have to jump through a hoop to get to the desktop.

I do have some good news about Windows 8.  In the very near future you are going to see an upgrade to Windows 8 (which will be FREE), called Windows 8.1, that in a sense is actually a downgrade.

Windows 8.1 Start Menu

You need to jump over to Paul Thurott’s Supersite for Windows to read about the changes that are going to occur when the Windows 8 downgrade or I mean upgrade occurs.  The biggest change is that Microsoft is giving in and is going to return the Start Menu and will give you the option of booting to the desktop instead of the Metro Start Screen. They are also planning some other neat changes…
